An old style diner with fantastic homemade pie. They are even open til eleven. We saw this pop up on Yelp on the way home and decided we needed to stop rather than take our chances on nothing open but fast food in Belleville. My husband had a grilled ham and cheese with real ham. The fries were skin on and fresh. I had veal cutlets. They were crispy and juicy. The gravy on top was fantastic. The side of the day was peas (happy sigh) with pats of butter to make them especially awesome. The side salad was fantastic and crisp with great ranch dressing. My only complaint was the bland over processed mashed potatoes. The gravy really helped them out though. The absolute highlight was the homemade pie OMG that pie. The server told us the most popular are peanut butter chocolate and the apple caramel walnut. She had me when she explained it was similar to a Dutch apple but even better. Not an exaggeration. That was some of the best damn pie I've ever eaten. My husband raved about the strawberry rhubarb. I'll have to take his word for it as he did not even offer me a bite. This was our first time here and we selected it because of the yelp ratings. Overall the establishment has an old diner feel, unfortunately felt a little bit drab on the inside. Maybe there's a draw for some but I just felt it was a little drab. The menu is huge and I ultimately decided on the hot roast beef sandwich based on some of the reviews I seen from other people. I wasn't sure if I wanted gravy on my fries or not so the waitress volunteered to put some on the side for me. I'm glad she did that because honestly I didn't really care for the fries that much, they were definitely homemade fries but needed to be cooked longer. Technically, they should be double fried so they get crispy. I had so much food that I took part of my sandwich home with me and the gravy on the side from the fries that I didn't use. You could definitely tell this is homemade gravy and not something out of a can! I normally don't like gravy but this gravy knocked it out of the ballpark! And speaking of things being knocked out of the ballpark, I got a side of horseradish to go with the sandwich and that is the best damn horseradish I have ever had in my entire life! read more

Looking for that perfect little old-school sit-at-the-counter diner, with your typical greasy spoon breakfast platter...then this is your spot! Met up with some friends before a recent round of golf for just that kind of experience. Coffee came quickly and refills we ready at the waiting. Our waitress was kind and took good care of us. she took our orders and the cooks got to work. I decided to "upgrade" my usual eggs, bacon, potatoes and toast order by adding in a biscuit and gravy. It was the "pro move" and helped the meal really stick in there as our round of golf got underway. My eggs were cooked just the way I like them, over-easy and ready for dunking. Bacon was crisp and the hash browned potatoes were well done just as I requested. The thick, creamy gravy had a great peppery flavor to it, and it clung deliciously to the moist biscuit underneath. Wow. I used to go to Schmuckers several years ago. I don't live close, but decided to "treat" myself. I got a salad and a slice of apple pie "to go". Makes me sad and mad at how disappointing it was. Maybe I got the wrong thing. My salad was ALL Romaine. Why? Half Romaine and half Ice Berg would have been so much tastier. I'm not picky and didn't want to finish it. Now...on to the pie. I went today and ordered the Swiss Steak special and a side salad. The food came up and I took it out to the van, the bag didn't feel warm. I figured maybe the Swiss Steak container just held heat well inside so that meant it wouldn't be hot on the outside of the container.......I WAS WRONG!!!! The darn meat wasn't even Luke warm. I took it back inside and the young lady looked at it and said, "Yeah it looks cold" and proceeded to go to heat it in the microwave. No remake, no offer for something else.....THE MICROWAVE? I told her no thanks and left the food there. One of my favorite breakfast spots just lost a customer due to your poor for and service. I guess that food temp would explain the 76 out of 100 on the health score. You're supposed to get temps of the food you hold hot and the food you hold cold and NEVER serve hot food below temp and cold food above temp. read more

The quintessential American diner. Small, busy, friendly, 1940s decor...original, including a working phone booth where they take to go orders. The food is higher end diner fare. Tastes great and and does not spare the calories, of course! Three must tries are the wimpy burger, meat loaf special, and the chicken fried steak breakfast special. This was the worst 2 meals I have ever paid for. The coleslaw was disgusting. The peas tasted like they were fresh out of a can, not even warm! The French fries were burnt they remade them but they were so greasy and tasted terrible. The meatloaf and mashed potatoes were very bland but the gravy was good. We left food on the table that that was uneatable . The the server wiped another table off with her bare hand. As I was waiting to pay my bill the servers cleared my table as I stood there, the did not use any sanitizer on the table. We ended up going to Texas Roadhouse to satisfy our hunger. We were in Toledo for the weekend and wanted something other than the traditional chain restaurants. We found this great throwback diner and had a wonderful lunch. I had the chili and a grilled cheese, wife had a burger and fries and our daughter had a BLT and chips. All of the food was great. Oh and then there was the homemade pie, pecan and chocolate which possibly are the best we ever had. Definitely recommend and will be back if we are ever in the area. read more

Ate a late breakfast here this morning. After a short wait, our party of 5 was seated. This place is like a throwback - vintage cash register, 80-year-old tile on the walls. It's a great vibe and the kitchen & staff were hopping. Lots of people serving and the kitchen seemed to be pumping out a lot of food. Our order came out quickly and everything tasted very good. I heard someone say the burgers patties here are not thick enough. GOOD, I say! If I wanted spherical burgers, I'd order a meatball sub. I've tried the sirloin burger and the double Wimpy platter. The burgers ARE pressed thin, and they ARE a little crispy around the edges. I understand that not everybody likes burgers this way, but personally, I do. I have to agree that the fries were not that great. Skip 'em. Burnt, yet, soggy. I've also finished my son's hot roast beef sandwich. It was damn good. It wasn't as good as Red Well's used to be, but then again, Red Well's isn't as good as Red Well's used to be. Large menu with lots of classic selections such as Swiss steak, meatloaf, chicken over biscuits, etc. Pretty much everything sounded good. Everything I saw on the other tables looked good, too! After reading some of the other reviews, this was a huge disappointment! A small, and very dated establishment. Some would say that is charm and others might say in need of repair. I sat at the counter directly across from the flat top and fryers were located. I watched at 2 different people worked that area and one gathered raw bacon on placed in her left hand, used her right to close the food drawer and open the next. Then she reached in that food drawer using her left hand still holding the bacon and grabbed some thick sliced bologna. One of the slices dropped into another compartment and she actually reached in with her left hand holding the raw bacon and bologna to grip the other slice. There were items strewn all along what looked like a salad prep table and the cutting table used for pies looked like someone took a bunch of unwanted pie crust and crumbled it on that counter. No one used gloves when handling pies and some of the staff would get more than one pie out at a time wiped the spatula off with their ungloved hand only to use it for the next slice! There was pieces of what looked like discarded french fries underneath the flat top and it did not appear to be well maintained. I was really looking forward to trying this place out but I will not return. An astounding 2 thumbs down!!! read more

Oh my schmuckers. Where have you been all my life? We stumbled upon this gem a few years ago when we were in the area looking for dessert. So we got pie after a yelp search. I've been here twice now in 5 weeks even though we live out of town 2 hours away. This is my review from today's meal. Family of 4, including two kids age 12 and 9. I got the meatloaf full course dinner. Includes potato, soup, plus 2 more sides and a slice of pie. I got peach. It was all so good and so much food. True home cooking. Others at the table got Swiss steak (excellent), mac and cheese (basic kraft) and Dagwood sandwich (ok). All for about $50. The place is small and doesn't look like much from the street. Only about 6 booths, maybe 4 tables, and about 5 counter spots in the COVID setup. Give it a shot if you are really hungry,mor looking for amazing homemade pie. read more

Me and two friends traveled from Michigan over 45 minutes during our Covid lockdown to have a nice meal and we chose Schmuckers. We were BLOWN AWAY at the quality of the food! (We all got the open faced roast beef plate with mashed potatoes and gravy.) The roast beef was so tender and delicious. My friend got some coleslaw for us to try: Great flavor and not too much Mayo! Of course we all had pies because that's what you do when your Governor keeps our restaurants closed. Those pies = sooooo good!!! Eat at this place! So traveling through Toledo today, decided to give this classic Toledo place a try. Walking in, I felt like I was stepping back in time. Traditional "diner" type place, with many of the fixtures looking like they've been around for a long while. Lol. Counter service, with the vinyl covered stools, low back booths, and a few tables and chairs in the middle of this small, quaint local establishment. Watching burgers and gravy covered "hot" sandwiches coming out to the guests leads me to believe that these are the staple items here. I opted for the special of the day, which was beef and noodles, with a side for $6.79. The beef and noodles were good, nothing to write home about, the French fries are fresh cut, and fries just right. Service was friendly, and prompt, although I was never offered a refill on my drink. I found this place on TripAdvisor and cross referenced it on Yelp. This was our breakfast stop form Buffalo To Chicago that morning. Its a little off way from the freeway but very much worth it. The place is small so seating is very limited, but the turn over is fairly quick. Standard diner fair but that's what you need sometimes. Something familiar and you know it will always be good.. I got the Western Omelet which was great tasting. I was also reading that you have to get a slice of Pie for there, but we were so stuffed from breakfast that we got the pies to go. I got the Chocolate Peanut butter and my friend got the strawberry rhubarb. We ate it the following evening and man, those pies were so good! I almost wanted to drive to Toledo and buy a whole pie from them. It was also great to see Doug who I believe owns and runs the place, still bussing tables, answering the phones, cashing people out etc. Its rare to see that now a days with businesses. All in all, when I'm traveling towards that direction, I will try my best to hit up this place for breakfast and make sure to get a WHOLE pie and not just a slice his time around. read more

Been to this location several times. Wait staff has been rude in the past, but today was last straw. Had a party of six. Four were present. They wouldn't seat us in a nearly empty restaurant (9 am on a Wednesday). That's ok. We stood by the door waiting on the rest of our group. As another customer came thru the door we moved to the walls next to the door so as not to block entry. Waitress approached again and snapped at us to WAIT BY THE DOOR. There was nobody seated anywhere near where we were waiting. Food is above average. Prices are great. Wait staff is awful. Taking our business elsewhere. read more
