I have passed by this place for forever and never stopped in. While my little sister was in town she had a sushi craving so we decided to give this place a shot. We order the spring rolls, gyoza, and 2 shaggy dog rolls. Everything was delicious. My only issue I had was when it was time to pay the big mix up and comment that was made. So when it was time to pay our waitress came got our tickets and form or payment. When she came back to the table she asked was a card (that was not mine) my card... I told her no and then she realized she had mad a big mistake but did not inform me or the table who was involved at the time...So about 10 minutes has passed and she comes back to the table and ask for cash but I replied no. So this took about 20-25 extra minutes then finally she comes back to the table and hands me an amended receipt with no explanation.... Before I could sign the receipt she says "no tip for me, I only make $2 an hour".... By this time I am livid because if you would have given me a darn chance to even write... You would have seen I was writing a freaking tip even though you screwed up. Well that was my experience with Akaihi. read more

My friends, my gf, and I were craving sushi. We came during their "happy hour" a couple of days ago. We wanted to try a place we had never been to. My gf suggested this place because of the reviews. We walked in and were greeted by the hosted immediately. She was nice and pleasant. We were handed menus and began figuring out what to order. No one else smiled or greeted us as we sat at our table. We sat there for a good 16 minutes. A waiter walked by us three times and did not say a single word or even acknowledged us. I looked over to the sushi bar, the chefs didn't bother acknowledging us. There was only another couple who sat together besides us. I started to feel worried. Finally, the same waiter who had ignored us for 16 minutes greeted us. He was trying to be funny, but it was just awkward. He took our orders and didn't realize that he should have wrote it down first instead of trying to mess it up. So halfway as we were ordering he said "oh maybe I should write this down". funny. "ha ha". Our sushi came out and it was mediocre. Some of the sushi ingredients (vegetables) had a freezer burn taste. Some of the cooked sushi was just cold and stale. We got our check and to our surprise, the waiter had double charged for a roll. I pointed it out, and he had the nerve to say, "well we gave you two orders and you ate it". I was about to raise my voice, but he seemed like he had no common sense, so that would have been pointless. I told him calmly but sternly, "No, there was only the Cali roll and one other roll on that plate, thats it' (the rolls we ordered! and also he even pointed it out to us when he placed it on the table!). He then asked me if i wanted them to "take it off the bill". I told him, "obviously". My friends, my gf and I will not be returning to this place who obviously needs to train their staff in common courtesy and even manners. I guess learning how to count would help too. read more

Well I hate to say it, but the sashimi made us sick. If you're not a raw fish eater then maybe you can stop reading here and ignore this review, your call. My husband and I are new to the area, we were living downtown and I am learning that we were spoiled with sushi options. We read great reviews on yelp about this place and thought we would give it a try. We ordered a sashimi platter with 4 varieties of raw fish to share. The fact that it was served over a mound of ice made me a little nervous. I was feeling fine when I went to bed but I awoke at 3am feeling pretty terrible. (Warning: gross out factor) In the morning, I mentioned to my husband that I won't be going back to this place due to a bout of the warm spits and feeling very close to needing to visit the bathroom - turns out he had experienced the same thing. I've really enjoyed the sushi here - I can't comment on the hibachi as that is not my thing. But I haven't been back in almost a year. The reason? On my last visit, the sushi chef (probable owner) got mad at one of the servers and proceeded to throw glass wear at him while he ducked under tables in the mostly unoccupied hibachi section. He threw 3 glasses, which shattered all over the section, at which time the target (our waiter) apologized to his tables, told the owner he was quitting, and walked out of the restaurant. I've been to this restaurant several times, so when my family came in from out of town, this place was the first choice. We went in (5 people) last Friday and decided to sit on the hibachi side for the first time as soon as two of us sat down, a roach came from below the hibachi grill, crawled under the menu to greet us at the edge of the table. Went here many times during paramedic school around the corner and were ALWAYS impressed. The food on the lunch specials is so plentiful that normally I had enough left for dinner too. We tried bento boxes, regular plates, and the most fun - hibachi! Last night we celebrated the end of school with a celebration dinner there during Happy Hour and the owner again took excellent care of us on the hibachi grill. He even threw in a couple of complimentary surprise shrimp with every meal. What an awesome treat at great prices! I see that the reviews show this place to be hit or miss, but I had a good visit. I had a taste for sushi, my favorite food and decided to try somewhere new. I stopped in around 630p on a Thursday evening. I was greeted as I walked through the door and sat immediately. My waitress was a my table in about 2 minutes to take my drink order. My drink was at my table quickly. I put in my appetizer order and it also appeared quickly. I then ordered 2 sushi rolls which also appeared quickly. I ordered a Mai tai, hot and sour soup, the Dynamite roll and the Sky Diver roll. The hot and sour soup was very good. The Mai Tai was exactly what it was supposed to be. The dynamite roll had much more breading than I thought it would. It tasted good but is definitely what I call "Americanized" sushi. Many people will like it, just not what I was looking for at the time. The sky diver was good, the description reminded me more of a spider roll. I think the majority of the people that are saying this is the best sushi in Spring and rating it really high are doing so because they simply have never had better sushi. This place was just meh-okay. I ordered the Akahihi Rainbow specialty roll and then a California roll at the cost of $20.00. Nothing about the rolls stood out to me or enticed me to come back. This place is nowhere near as good as Matsu Japenese Restaurant. The first time I ate at Matsu, I could not stop thinking about it and went back twice in the same week. Here at Akaihi, their rolls did not have the same freshness that I am accustomed to at Matsu. The rolls were not bad, but they weren't spectacular. I love hibachi. And I've been to a few good hibachi places in California and Houston. This place was overall decent. The food was good, except they do add too much salt to the veggies. Akaihi sits in the same shopping center as the HEB (across from Klein High)- and although you might not imagine such caliber of sushi in a shopping center in Spring, they serve up some incredibly fresh sushi-- comparable to some of the best sushi joints in Houston. One side sits large hibachi stations where you can watch chefs cook your food in front of you with flare, and the other houses a sushi bar and regular tables. We came with family on a Friday evening, ordered a few of the Shaggy Dog Rolls, a Sashimi combo platter, Grilled fish (collar), and Filet and Shrimp Hibachi. The sashimi was displayed beautifully with elegant garnish on packed ice. The sushi chef was incredibly generous in portion sizes of the sashimi. My fav was the salmon, soo fresh and delicious. Hibachi was well seasoned and came with veggies on the side. The adults knew to order the Grilled fish collar (this might be off the menu), and although sounds weird, it's absolutely delicious. Service was wonderful and attentive. If I lived closer, I am sure this restaurant would definitely become a regular in my restaurant rotation. This rating is based on the owner, not the waitstaff. Our server noticed my husband had not eaten much of his dinner and questioned if she should talk to the manager about a refund. We indicated it wasn't necessary-don't worry about it. My husband told her the reason he didn't eat it was because the beef was tough and leathery. Asked her to bring the bill and told her it was all good. With our bill, she brought the owner. He walked up to our table with the plate of partially eaten food and proceeds to cut into it to show us that the meat was cooked appropriately-which wasn't the issue to begin with. I am SO glad we did!! This place did not disappoint! We ordered the Shaggy Dog roll and it was really, really good and the price of the roll is so much cheaper than other sushi places in the area! HUGE plus! We also sat on the hibachi side and the service was pretty good. We really enjoyed the hibachi chicken. A lot of times at other places the hibachi food is so bland and usually the chicken is dry because it was overcooked, but I can honestly say this was some of the best hibachi food I've ever had. I L.O.V.E. LOVE Akaihi! After a neighbor told us about the restaurant I decided to give it a shot with my 7 yr old daughter. My daughter loves Benihana's, but the Woodlands is not a convenient drive. We went there and my daughter forgot all about Benihana's. We ended up going the first time just the 2 of us, two days later we came back with my mother, and two days after that we can back with my Aunt and my mother, we all love it to say the least. My daughter at least twice a week asks if we can go to Hibachi (she never says the actually restaurant name lol). She gets the kids Shrimp Hibachi and I get the adult Shrimp Hibachi meal and we ALWAYS have food to take home for the next day. If you go eat Hibachi ask for Tommy, he ROCKS and my daughter doesn't want to go if he isn't there to make our food, even if we're getting it to-go lol. The employees are nice and attentive, and I have not had a bad experience yet and I am sure that I won't. Give them a shot. Oh P.S. Try the Green Tea ice cream (it comes as apart of the hibachi meal) it is unique but oddly good. Really the only reason I am giving them 4 stars is because every time I dine in, I noticed I get bitten by mosquitos on my legs. I have gone twice with a coworker during lunch and she got bit also. We were in the mood for Hibachi and, while the reviews here were mixed, we decided to give it a try. Overall, the place was not bad. We were greeted by a friendly hostess and were seated immediately. It was only 8:30, but the Hibachi side was empty except for us. Sam was our waitress and was very friendly and attentive. She even explained that "Akaihu" meant "red fire" and was the name chosen by the owner's daughter. Based on the recommendations here, we had the Red Dragon Roll. It was very yummy, well made and well presented. The dipping sauce that Sam recommended was tangy with a touch of heat and a good compliment to the Roll. We both had the Filet and Lobster with Fried Rice. That came with a Beef Onion Soup and Salad with a Shrimp Appetizer. The soup was quite flavorful with bits of meat and chunks of potatoes adding to the flavor. The dressing on the salad had a nice gingery flavor but not over powering. They didn't overdress the salad either which many Japanese restaurants tend to do. The chef was entertaining and cooked the steak and lobster perfectly. The only complaint we have is that the rice and veggies were too salty. We tried the complimentary Green Tea ice cream and thought it was good, too. It was a nice finish to the meal. The restaurant was very clean and a nice surprise considering it's in a strip center. I hope it does well. We will definitely go back. read more

Came in with a friend for lunch. It was my first time, and she's a regular. It's a nice little place, the atmosphere is cozy and the staff are very friendly. We ordered veggie tempura, a small fried rice, two rolls, and Japanese nachos. The tempura and fried rice were pretty ordinary. The rolls we had we had were the Little Mermaid and Firecracker. Both were very good! Maybe because I'm a very big fan of spicy chopped scallop. The Japanese nachos were really interesting, it's a piece of fried seaweed topped with a lightly fried lump of spicy tuna drizzled with spicy mayo and eel sauce. My friend and I really enjoyed it. Overall, it was a really good local sushi restaurant and it reminded me of another local place in my neighborhood that I used to frequent. I would come back the next time I'm in the area. read more

READ THE BAD REVIEWS BEFORE DINING HERE!!!! Our family has lived in the area for over 15 years. We watched the HEB be built. We have been loyal customers of Akaihi since they opened. There have been small hiccups along the way, but nothing to stop us from coming back. I guess that is because we never met the owner (Tai) until today. The food is generally good. The Happy Hour prices make dining there with the family almost affordable. Today our family of four ordered the spicy calamari and edamame for appetizers. They were good. The calamari were slightly overcooked, but no big deal. For our entrees we ordered the chicken hibachi (for my wife), three sushi rolls, and a side of fried rice. The Shaggy Dog and Spicy salmon roll came out first, and tasted as they should (fresh). The fried rice was good as well. The last item to come out of the kitchen was our Volcano roll. I tasted a bit of the topping (crawfish) and it didn't taste right. I tasted two more times, but it wasn't "one" bad piece, ALL of the crawfish were bad... as in spoiled. Inedibly bad. I stopped my wife from getting a piece of the roll and warned my son and daughter not to try it. My son still tried a piece and agreed it tasted "bad". The waitress came by and I told her that the crawfish were bad and asked if we could get the Dynamite roll. I asked if it had crawfish on it, she said that it didn't and that it had whitefish. Great. Moments later the owner came out and asked if we were "sure" we wanted the Dynamite roll. I said "Yes." He then went on to (loudly) say that we could not return anything else. I said, "If it's bad, it's going back." He kept arguing, and I said, "Forget it. We don't want the roll. Bring our check and some boxes." He walked off. I then said (as loudly as he had been talking to me) "Like I don't know what bad seafood tastes like." Neither our check nor boxes were brought to our table. We will never dine at Akaihi again. Bottom line, as long as you don't have a problem, or are okay with paying for any mistake or spoiled product they serve you, then you should be fine. If, however, you get served something that is wrong or tastes bad, and you don't want to eat it or pay for it, well, it isn't going to end well. My wife and I both waited tables for over 6 years apiece. Mistakes happen. Managers should be there to ensure that the customer has a good experience. The problem is that the owner doesn't care if his customers have a good experience. Part of the money customers pay when dining out is for the atmosphere, not just the food. I was very close to not paying the whole bill, but decided to anyway. He is lucky we didn't just walk out and not pay a dime after he spoke to us in the manner he did. I genuinely support local businesses and restaurants. However, I hope his restaurant fails, because as long as it is open, customers run the risk of having their dining experience ruined by the owner. read more

Without a doubt the WORST sushi I've ever had. The one star isn't even for the food or service, it's because the Asahi I ordered came out ice cold. The girlfriend and I walked in and were seated by the hostess who barely glanced up from her cell phone to greet us. The server came over and asked, "Do you guys wanna here some crazy shit?" Both rolls were almost all rice, and each piece of her unagi roll was about the size of a quarter, no exaggeration. The tempura was overly greasy, and nothing on any of the plates tasted fresh. I really wanted to like this place because it's so close to the house, but the food was just terrible. No flavor whatsoever, and even for happy hour prices I still feel like I overpaid. Me and my family love this place! It has low lighting, cool decor, and delicious food. Their flat noodles with beef are really tasty. I did, however, find a small piece of steel wire brush in my food that we apparently left on the plate after dishes were washed which could have been very dangerous to my life if I had eaten it. The waiter was a guy and seemed not to care and didn't apologize for the mishap. I forgave them because usually it's 2 girls who are very polite and good servers working there. This place is very close to home. We have eaten here a lot of times, and it has always been pretty good. The sashimi has always been fresh. I only wish they had more sake selections.
