She gave me a little history lesson about the place and pointed at the father and son who were working (the son was our server). This interaction went a long way and is very rare. I do find that there are quite a bit of long-standing family restaurants in Tucson and to have received this kind of welcome is very special to me as a patron. *Food. I had a delicious cup of chili, a chef's salad, and Mexican Coke. Basic but good. *Pricing. Not bad. I would come here for lunch a couple times a week. *Parking. A mom and pop cafe that is affordable, fantastic service, and great food. Love that the menu is laminated into the table. We ordered a Partty Melt and a Reuben. Our food came out within 10 minutes if ordering and cooked beautifully. Perfectly seasoned, perfectly portioned, and perfectly priced. I saw someone order the cinnamon roll, and baayby I'm soo glad I ordered. Its enough for two people and honestly the best in Tucson. The dough and the icing is so light and airy. We were exhausted and disheveled and in an unfamiliar area of the country, and AJO CAFE was the BEST thing about that day!!!! The food was DELICIOUS and Max was AWESOME. If you're looking for an amazing breakfast that tastes homemade and a restaurant that takes you back to the old times this is it! We came here on a Tuesday morning and it was a bit busy but we did not have to wait for a table or wait long for our food. Our waitress was super sweet and she told us the restaurant has been open since 1952/53 and it's family owned for 3 generations. I loved the ambience. Our food was so good. We don't get to this side of town often. Because of the gem show, we had to detour to get to the restaurant, but it was very worth it. It's an old-fashioned cafe where the locals know each other, the servers hug and you feel comfortable striking up a conversation. There are several tables, booths and seats at the counter. They have breakfast all day and lunch starting at 11, plus daily specials. I had the chicken fried steak and eggs, and the Hubbs had the turkey meatloaf special. This place is super local. We were on a golf trip so when we walked in ready for golf it was like everyone else was on the set of Landman, which is to say, this place was awesome. We were seated quickly by the staff who were very friends and very fast with service. I had the chicken fried chicken which was excellent along with coffee and OJ. The ambiance isn't upscale as I said earlier, but if you're looking for a great local breakfast spot, you cannot go wrong. I rate places based on what they are and for this little local cafe 5-stars. Want a the full-on cafe experience- this is your place! It's small, family run (I think), quaint and delicious, with simple food served fresh. I had a basic grilled ham & cheese on rye and it was excellent and exactly as I was expecting. Also, added a slice homemade banana cream pie. The pie was delicious. The crust just so. It's a typical diner with an atypical waitress. Good, though, and I'll be back to try something else on their menu. I had the huevos rancheros. It was fine. It was not eggs medium well done, however, but I don't think anyone in Tucson knows how to make a medium well egg. The legendary waitress you read about in the reviews here, Teresa with the pink glasses, is the real deal. I think she was born hard wired with a smile on. So pleasant and happy. 5* = A top favorite. Mind-blowing good. I will definitely return and I will go out of my way to go here. Worth every dime of my money. 4* = Outstanding. Top-tier. Some elements not quite as good as it gets, but it still is worthy of my regular business. 3* = Good experience. Hands down, one of the best diners in town! It's a small establishment, with counter seating along with regular seating. The menu serves up traditional American-style food at fair prices. When we went, there were two waitresses, including Teresa (whose friendly presence has been noted in numerous reviews). We didn't have Teresa this time (our waitress was also friendly), but we had the chance to interact with her and such. She is indeed, a gem in that restaurant (and humanity). I had the "Two Eggs Breakfast" and it was delightful! The sourdough toast was so good, that it was fine as it was served- lightly buttered... no jelly needed. Met a friend for breakfast at this hole in the wall in Tucson, and felt we hit the jackpot when Theresa bounced over to our table. I felt like we were being waited on by a celebrity given all the great comments about her. They were no exaggeration. This girl is a gem. What the world needs more of. Onto the food. I had the chicken fried chicken with two perfectly poached eggs and grits. Pal had avocado toast (not on the menu) and two eggs and we shared one bacon pancake. Theresa was the most joyful presence I have ever experienced in a server. Just a genuine soul bringing joy to everyone she meets. Mac was so helpful with warning us just how big the biscuits and gravy are if you order a large. This diner is absolutely adorable. Perfectly decorated to take you back in time or just to your old hometown cafe, from the "happy everything" sign to the old diner mugs. I wish I could teleport it to oregon. Food was not good small portions, service was poor had to wait for more drink refills, only 2 other tables were occupied. Had to wait..... for Toast.... C'mon waitservice... its Toast delivery... gives you the feeling of a truckstop... but truckers wont show up for this place!!!!either should anyone else.
