    Meatloaf meal

Been a loyal customer since they opened here. Went last Friday & the food did not taste fresh Had the meatloaf & it was hard & burned. Pancakes had burned grill marks. Even the French fries seemed "microwaved". Appears like everything was rewarmed on the griddle. We're not ones to send our food back for obvious reasons.

It's reasonably priced. I went for the all you can eat fish fry. It's pollack in a crispy breading, but the breading is pretty tasteless and seems to be the largest portion of the dish. I prefer a thinner batter so the fish can be the star. The coleslaw was not seasoned or creamy. The fries were good. The hush puppies were dense. My guest had the roast beef and it was like you would get at home. The cornbread was dry but had a good flavor. The clam chowder was good. The plus was it was all reasonably priced and the service was fantastic. I may come back for breakfast some day.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Great atmosphere and service.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I had grits with cheese, bacon and egg whites. I was pleasantly surprised; it was a good breakfast and food Cane out within a reasonable time and was hot.

This was our first return in exactly 4 years. We wanted to try their fish and chips which has been our crusade since returning to Tucson. [[HIGHLIGHT]]As before the place was busy even though it was later in the evening.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance was about typical for a diner.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We ordered both the cod and the all-you-can eat haddock dinners. We asked for cocktail sauce and Naomi, the waitress offered to make us some. She did a great job on that. As to the fish, we tasted each others order and agreed that the slightly cheaper (20 cents or so) AYCE haddock was the better of the two. The batter on the cod was boring and had less taste than the batter on the haddock which was a thinner cut fish. The portion of fries was generous, the cole slaw simple (good) and the hush puppy just that. So far this has been the most reasonably priced F&C in Tucson. We might return for the AYCE haddock even though I only had one small piece extra. The wife brought home a portion of her cod. We debated on three or four stars this time.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Honestly this place needs a redo, this place has been open since 2017, and it is starting to show. It needs a desperate facelift, paint job and deep deep cleaning.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Walked in for the Friday Fish Fry special today with my mom, we love a good fish fry, we already knew what we were getting so it should be easy. 1. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The first table the man took us too was covered in Fly's not only did he not sit us there but he had to relocate the family that was sitting at the next table, fly's is not a good sign, something isn't being cleaned properly![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] 2. The waiter was great, very busy, came over took our order and got our drinks. She is part of the reason you're getting a 2 star. She was lovely. 3. As the food came I was enjoying my fish, trying everything on the plate, I took my first bite of the Cole slaw, very very bland, no flavor at all, but there was a surprise in it, a plastic Red Bag Tie from bread in the coleslaw. The waiter was called over and I showed it to her, she apologized and went out to grab another dish of coleslaw, came back with 2 - $5 Blackbear coupons. Not a good start 4. Everything was old and cold - Fries were horrible, hush puppies had died two days ago and were served to us, and everything was bland zero salt or flavoring to anything. 5. The fish is why your getting another star, as it was good fish, it came out crispy and was quite tasty needed alittle more flavor in the breading but was good. It just took forever to get it out to us, and that seemed to be the case for anyone ordering fish. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Overall, the details are being overlooked, and someone needs to take the time to go back and start review what you are doing here, start off with a whole deep clean of that place, carpets, walls everything! And the kitchen needs to be mindful of things that are being used in the kitchen.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

We stopped by Black Bear Diner for a meal, and it definitely hit the spot for hearty, "home-cooked" comfort food. You certainly won't leave hungry!

I have been to Black Bear Diner only twice before both times for lunch/dinner and I wasn't really a fan. Everyone kept saying it's better for Breakfast so I finally gave it a try. I got their pancakes with scrambled eggs and the spicy sausage. I enjoyed the sausage and thought the spice level was just right. The eggs and the pancakes were just alright. The server was the sweetest and she made it a great experience. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant was busy, but never felt overwhelming or too loud.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

    Definitely needs new seating!
    Kathy G.

Hubby and I went on Sun., 18 Jan 2026. We were quickly seated by Jayson, waitress Karen gave us a pleasant smile and warm greeting. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The hardworking gentelman hustling to sweep floors and clear tables kept the place immaculate.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] You get plenty of appetizing plates of food, leaving us full as a tick! [[HIGHLIGHT]]The high volume of patrons truly warrants replacement of seating. It detracts from the ambiance to sit upon or scoot across worn upholstery.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] A bit pricey for orange juice, no choice to order small, automatically got a large which was $5.99 x2 = $11.98 all I can say is, WOW! Overall, we walked out satisfied. Total with tax, $45.06, plus $8 cash tip given directly to server. Breakfast for two $53.06! Certainly my first to pay $41.46 w/o tax for breakfast. Next time we will have ice water with our food. Lol

    BLT with 5 onion rings
    Jaime M.

Food was just ok. Server not very attentive. I ordered the BLT sandwich with onion rings, by the way, it only came with 5 onion rings! Waiter said because it was a "lighter sandwhich" what da heck?!? I asked if they could bring more onion rings, the server who brought out the food said sure no problem. It took so long. I was finished my meal before they even brought more onion rings out. I told them to take it back because I was done by the time they brought it back. And my friends ordered the big chicken fried steak another ordered the bread pudding French toast and the other ordered their new chicken Caesar sandwich. They all said their food was just ok also. I hope to never come back :(

    Chicken fried steak breakfast
    Joy S.

We enjoy coming here for breakfast. Today they weren't very busy, so we were seated immediately. Our server came over right away and took our beverage order. I got the chicken fried steak breakfast, with a house salad for the side. The meat had a yummy crunchy coating and the steak was tender. Eggs cooked to my liking. The house salad was nothing special, just bagged lettuce, two cherry tomatoes, and two cucumber slices, but the ranch dressing was delicious. My husband enjoyed his big grizzly breakfast with lots of protein, hashbrowns, and two large pancakes. The food arrived in a timely manner and was nice and hot. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant was clean and inviting.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Our booth was comfortable and the bathrooms were nice and clean as well.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

We were a lively group of seven, and after our meeting we even celebrated my birthday. From the moment we walked in, I was impressed. The restaurant is bright, inviting, spacious, and has a warm, modern atmosphere that immediately makes you feel comfortable. The food was outstanding! Our table enjoyed a delicious variety of favorites, including Elote Nachos, Shrimp Ceviche, Mac & Cheese with Chicken, and several Happy Hour entrées. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. And if you visit, do yourself a favor--order the Margarita with Tajín (that perfect blend of mild chile, lime, and salt). It was absolutely delicious! What truly made our experience memorable, however, was the exceptional hospitality. Manager Edmont and our server Olivia treated us like old friends from the moment we arrived. They were attentive, fun, and genuinely made us feel welcome. The highlight? Edmont surprised us by leading our group in the Tucson High Badger Fight Song after learning we were alumni! Talk about going above and beyond. To top off a wonderful evening, we shared a warm Cinnamon Roll Bread Pudding complete with a birthday candle--a sweet ending to a fantastic celebration. Redbird isn't just serving great food; they're creating memorable experiences. I also appreciate that they partner with local businesses, something that speaks volumes about their commitment to our Tucson community. If you're looking for a wonderful place for Happy Hour, dinner with friends, or your next celebration, put Redbird Scratch Kitchen + Bar on your list. Stop by--and tell them the Badgers sent you!

We made a reservation well in advance and even then there were limited time options. The atmosphere of the restaurant is slightly upscale while still being cozy. I love all the plants! The beets and everything that came with them was very fresh! I love anything with pickled onions. The steak appetizer was excellent and my dad could not stop talking about them. Next, I ordered the swordfish special and my dad got the pork chop. Everything was cooked to perfection and flavor was everywhere! For dessert we split the dark chocolate ganache. The ganache was very rich but paired wonderfully with the whipped cream and other flavors. I don't drink, but my dad also loved the cocktails he ordered! The first thing I need to own is that it's a shame I hadn't visited here before. We arrived at 5:30p and both the bar and patio areas were packed - standing room only, and no wonder. They have one of the better happy hours (daily! 3:00 - 6:30p) - able to accommodate both the slacker and the over-timer Lol. Basic drinks are all discounted such as house wines, well drinks, and beers. Their bottled wines and craft cocktails are all exempt though. Many of their appetizers are also discounted and some quite substantially. We grabbed a glass of the house cabernet ($6, normally $8) and the grilled shrimp wrapped in jalapeno bacon ($13, normally $20). NOTE: happy hour pricing is Only available if you order/consume at the bar or on the patio and that's clear in advance, and understandable. The dining areas were only half full at this early point (but filled up by 6:30) and the host kindly encouraged us to enjoy our starters at the bar as she would hold our table. We were then sat near the "back" of this long venue and frankly, aside from the lone windowed table at the very front, this would be my preferred seating - cozy, intimate, with only five other tables around us. For dinner drinks she got an Italian Nebbiolo Bricco Magno Red Blend ($13/glass, reliably terrific/mellow) and I got the Chupacabra ($15) Mezcal/prickly pear cocktail, strong and excellent as well. We got an additional appetizer: the roasted bone marrow ($19). I had never had marrow before but she raved about how good this can be if done properly (bonus, it is super healthy). Folks, a picture/worth a 1000... suffice to say this was simply outstanding! We both had long work weeks and were craving meat - just a damn good steak. Our waiter, without blinking recommended the 8oz bison filet mignon ($65) as his absolute menu fav, and then the day's special: 14oz ribeye ($50). We ordered each. All dinners come with two sides and we each got the day's special: roasted half artichoke and she got the loaded baked potato while I got the mashed potatoes. Food arrived about 15 minutes later at good temperature (warm/rested with a strong char) with each being accurately grilled (medium and medium-rare). Taste was outstanding. Neither one of us had bison filet before and marveled how it (subtly) added a "wild" edge to an always outstanding, lean-but-tender, cut of beef. The loaded baked was terrific, however, the mashed was the only disappointment... a plainer mash one could not make themselves - pure white and borderline dry, no milk, butter, egg, gravy(?), nothing to make it creamy or add any flavor dimension - a surprise frankly. The only other "critique" is that the dessert menu could add some kind of dark/chocolate concoction. All in all, though, we loved our experience and have decided to add this to our periodic special dinners rotation! Staff was outstanding - just the proper balance of attentive and quiet - and waters never went below half empty. Parking is free and plentiful, especially behind the restaurant (and yes, if you continue on around the back there is another long entrance/exit driveway that comes out the other side of Jimmy John's and Noodleholics.

I understand the head chef has a French influence, but frankly it overwhelms the food and takes away from the freshness. I had the snapper since they didn't have the halibut. It seemed over cooked and then drenched in sauce with greens on top, also drenched in sauce. The saddest part was they sat us in the back room. Where they seemed to sit everyone coming into the restaurant. If the restaurant was packed I would understand but every other room was empty. Who wants to sit along the pathway to the bathroom? Service was so/so. Had to ask for drinks multiple times. But frankly the quality of the food was not worth the cost. Definitely will not be returning, until they revamp the menu to include less French style and more uniquely inspired fresh food. I mean if we wanted French we would have gone to Le Rendezvous or Wild Garlic which are top notch.
