We were looking for a sushi restaurant and of course, we turned to Yelp. We are a fairly large group, so that is going to play a factor. My wife calls Ahi Sushi, and tells the owner Gina about our interest. Initially we tried to reserve for 20 people, but 20 people was too much, and later on, I would understand why. So after taking an official count, they reluctantly agreed to reserve space for 13 people at 6:00 on a Saturday. We're happy, our friends are happy, and we're looking forward to dinner. As we are heading over, get a call at 5:45 from Gina. She wants to make sure we are all still coming. We assure her that we are in fact still coming, and very close. I can only imagine her relief because my wife said as soon as she walked in, she hugged my wife. More on that later. We get seated, and so far there are 7 of us. Customers are walking in and at 5:55, they again ask if more people are coming, because a small line of people waiting for a seat is starting to develope. Now I understand the reluctance of Gina to save a table for us. Apparently this is the spot. I also feel a bit bad that some people are leaving and my friends are a little late. But 5-10 min later, we're all there and ready to order. Our servers were Kyrston, Andrew and Meimi (or something like that). Kyrston said, we're all your waiters but I'm taking your order. She took care of us mostly. After we ordered, we were treated with a free California roll. At least, I think we were treated. It could be standard for large groups. After some miso soup and salad for some, our rolls start to arrive. The problem we've had at other sushi joints, is one sushi per person just isn't quite enough. So we order an extra. Of the 13 of us, 11 of us order sushi, and 3 of us order an extra one. Buy the time we are done, we are absolutely stuffed. Honestly I don't think any of us should have ordered any extra rolls. Plus my wife got the Tuna Dance, which could probably feed 2 people. It's huge and very tasty, if not a bit messy. I got the Dragon and the Monster. Daughter got the I Love U, and sons got the Crunch Shrimp and Crunch Salmon Tempura rolls. Mt Don really liked my Dragon, and my daughter thought my Monster was spicy. It wasn't that spicy honestly. It's not labeled as spicy but it does include spicy tuna. One thing the plate included that I've never had was pickled radish in addition to the ginger. I liked it but it wasn't for everyone. Towards the end, we noticed it started to get earn inside. Unfortunately, the fans were not in, and even if they were, there were none above us. It also started to get busier in the restaurant, so Kyrston started hustling to the various tables. We could have hung out another 5-10 min chatting, but I gathered everyone together so we could make room in the restaurant. As we got up, Gina hugged my wife again. She's very sweet. As we made our way to our cars, we commented on how good everything was. My buddy who eats out a lot mentioned the quality of the food. That you could really taste it. I was impressed with how unique everything was. There were some old faithfuls on the menu, but so many rolls were completely new to me. All in all, we had a great time with great food. Gave this place a try because it's #10 on Yelps 100 top sushi places. It didn't disappoint. They have a lot of different options and the fish tastes clean and fresh. Some sushi places tend to drown their sushi in sauces, but Agi Sushi doesn't do that. The staff were very friendly and the place was packed the entire time we were there. The prices are decent too. Wow we had the Salmon Dance for the first time last night and it was amazing!!! It's a spicy tuna and crab roll with a mountain of marinaded salmon on top. The marinaded salmon (FYI the marinade is so good) was delicious and I'm am not joking about the amount of salmon you get it's huge! They top it with the best crispy onions I've ever had in my life, and I am an onion ring lover I've had them many times at multiple restaurants, but these crispy onions hit different they had a slightly sweet onion flavor (not overpowering at all) with the perfect crispness but not over done. I would love to see those onions on the menu as an appetizer. I would order them every time! Just when I thought Ahi couldn't get any better they surprise me yet again. But, I should not have doubted Yelp reviewers.. considering location, it was pretty fresh and it tasted pretty good. The only issue was the salmon roll. It had a weird taste. The other seafood was fine but the other rolls were baked or fried. The salmon roll was the only raw fish we had. I have to say, the staff was so so friendly and attentive that I cannot give it any less than 4 stars. They came over and filled our drinks without asking and asks during our meal if we needed anything. Really one of the best service we had!!! read more

Came out for a date night plenty of parking in the shopping center. I had read many other great reviews and was looking forward to trying it out. Walking in you are warmly welcomed by the staff. We were seated quickly and drink orders taken. They have an extensive menu there were still a couple of pages I didn't snap pictures on. We were planning to see a movie so we decide we were just going to do rolls. They also give complementary miso soup. Such a lovely bowl especially on a rainy day. My husband and I order 4 rolls in total. Hama Hama, flaming hot, krispy cream and dragon roll. We got them all quickly. The one that took the longest was the dragon roll because of the eel but even that still came out quickly. Everything tasted very fresh, they were all made well so they didn't fall apart on you. A nice serving of wasabi and ginger with each roll and they also give pickled radish which was so tasty! We look forward to coming back and trying some of their other items including ramen and udon. If you have never had quail eggs, they are so delicious. They use just the yolk. Although they are cool, they taste exactly like a soft fried egg. As you bite into them they spread like a rich sauce over the Masago & rice. Then I had the yellowtail sushi. It was firm and fresh & tasty as if just out of the sea. Tonight we went out for dinner, and honestly, I was let down. I had been looking forward to sushi all week. I finally convinced my husband to try this place I usually hit up for lunch. His meal showed up, but mine took a whopping 35 minutes longer, and by then, I had to cancel my order because my husband's food was cold. It was so disappointing to see that the sous chef was prioritizing takeout orders over the folks dining in. I noticed tables around us waiting for 30 minutes for their meals. One dish would come out, then 10 minutes later another, and then another 10 minutes for yet another. It should either be a proper restaurant experience or a fast food joint. Personally, I believe they should prioritize the customers who are actually in the restaurant. read more

Was so excited to try Ahi, family had been raving about it, sadly had a very disappointing experience. Took our grandma here for her birthday, and the service was some of the worst I've had in Bakersfield. To name a few issues: - The waitress didn't take all of our orders, she literally just left the table halfway in. We had to chase her down and ask her to finish taking our orders. - The staff never cleaned one dirty dish from our table. The dishes kept piling up to the point where we just bussed the table ourselves. - They forgot multiple entrees. When we asked them if they were coming they just kept saying they would check, but never followed up, and some of our food never even showed up (never got the chance to try the nigiri, which we came for). - The staff never apologized or tried to make right their mistakes. I totally understand being understaffed, but just tell us that instead of being rude when we're asking for basic things like getting the food we ordered. Overall, the food we were able to try was slightly above average and, as stated above, the service was significantly below average. Sounds like the boss was out of town, so maybe that's why the service was rough. Will give it another try at some point in the future. read more

Both drinks were delicious! We started with miso soups that was piping hot and loaded with tofu! Absolutely delicious! We then received the Jalapeño Poppers. This is a must order if you love spicy jalapeño flavor items! The fried jalapeño was stuffed with cream cheese & spicy tuna this wonderful sauce with crispy bits under the jalapeño. Next, my youngest kids teriyaki came out and he loved the plate! As a toddler, he ate a good portion and left with sauce all over his face. LOL Next our rolls came out the tuna dance and Rosedale tempura roll! Holy moly! The portion of the rolls were very generous! The tuna dance was EXTREMELY delicious! The amount of ahi tuna on top of the roll was insane and delicious! The roll was a tuna, cucumber, and imitation crab roll and was incredibly delicious. The onion tempura on top was so pretty and very delicious! The Rosedale tempura roll had a delicious smoky taste to the exterior tuna! All the fish tasted fresh! Everything was made to perfection! The restaurant was modern and loved the bar in the back. I loved that the sushi bar with the chefs was in view throughout the restaurant. Seated immediately for lunch at noon on a Friday. Lots of staff working so even though they had a full house during the lunch hour, they kept up with the demand. Our service was perfect, pleasant, refills, order of food brought out was timely/properly paced. Started with miso soup--pretty standard. Garlic edamame next-delish/fresh/cooked properly/big serving. A bit of time to digest and then the sushi came. Bay scallop nigiri--wow huge amount of scallops compared to the other 100 places that I have had them and very tasty. The rice had a subtle sweetness to it but not overpowering. Finally the roll "beautiful Lady". All I can say is "WOW". lots of fresh fish, not ruined by being overspiced but very flavorful with some greens that came with it (some even in the roll!). The rice paper allows one to eat a piece in two bites (which even for me was necessary as the pieces are large). The price was excellent, especially for the quality and quantity of food. We yelped this restaurant because we were not familiar with the area. My friend wanted sushi and Ahi has good reviews. We were seated at the bar right away. All the staff were friendly and polite. Our food came quickly. My friend's sashimi was super fresh. Great presentation. I'm not a fan of sushi so I ordered the deep fried lobster roll. Phenomenal! I'm still thinking about it a week later. The waitresses were very welcoming, made great recommendations and worked very quickly. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that they had takoyaki as an appetizer.. we ordered the spicy edamame, takoyaki, tuna dance, sashimi lunch platter and two drinks. The order total was $65 plus tax ($70). When I tell you the portions were huge I am not kidding, we boxed up half of the tuna dance, half the edamame and half the takoyaki bc we were stuffed. Every item we ordered was a 10/10 for flavor, presentation and value. I would highly recommend this sushi restaurant to others! The food is fresh and amazing, but won't hurt your budget. Our experience was just another of a long series of pleasant, and delicious events at what has been, and remains, our favorite Bakersfield sushi place. True, over the past couple of months, prices have increased at least 13%, but portions are generous, quality is good, Asian chefs doing their thing were on duty, and the ever smiling hostess was the same. BTW: The lunch Bento deals remain uncommonly good values. This remains a simple, but delectable, Japanese restaurant. No starched linen, nor fancy silverware, nor crystal wine glasses.
