I'm glad we did, because it gave us a whole new feel for the place. Inside isn't massive, but it's not cramped either. Think of it like the Goldilocks of restaurant spaces: just right. The vibe leans calm and cozy, dim lighting, black walls, and splashes of color here and there. It's got that "peaceful sushi zen" atmosphere without being boring. Our waitress deserves a medal (or at least an extra roll on the house). She was the only one working the floor, yet somehow managed to be friendly, attentive, and efficient all at once. Multitasking level: expert. Now onto the food, which is really why we came back. We ordered a spread: two teriyaki chicken plates, one chicken ramen bowl, an order of sushi crunch rolls, egg rolls, a large pineapple sake, a beer, and two iced teas. (Yes, we came hungry. Don't judge.) Everything came out quickly, hot, and fresh. The chicken was juicy, the rice perfectly cooked, and the little bed of veggies under the teriyaki chicken was tender-crispy and surprisingly addictive. Whoever thought of tucking those under there deserves a raise. The ramen had bold flavors that hit the spot, and the sushi rolls lived up to their name, they really were crunchy and delicious. Now, the egg rolls. Let me tell you, these might just be the best I've ever had. Perfectly crisp on the outside, soft and stuffed with flavor on the inside. The kind that makes you regret ordering only one plate. Drinks? The beer was cold (and surprisingly affordable), the iced teas were strong and refreshing, and the pineapple sake... well, it was different, let's just say it's not everyone's cup of tea. Personally, I'll stick to tequila, lol, but my husband happily claimed the sake as his new favorite. Win-win. Prices here are fair and budget-friendly, which is always nice to see at a sushi spot. The place was clean and well-kept, and I'm happy to say it still holds up just as well as when I ordered takeout years ago. We were given a sample fried eggplant appetizer,it was a tasty beginning to a few better entrees to come and I ordered the lobster and scallop rolls, which came in generous portions, made with fresh ingredients and crafted with care. My wife's Bento Box with Miso soup -- featuring bulgogi and chicken -- was equally perfectly cooked. my kid ordered it a sushi roll and ate it so fast, I forgot to ask them what it was called, but I did take a picture. If I had to find a flaw, it would be the rolls and slightly heavy hand with the eel sauce on my lobster and scallop rolls, but that was a tiny hiccup an otherwise excellent meal. The true standout of our evening, however, was KayKay. More than just our server, she was a hostess, entertainer, and resident comedian. Her humor and vibrant energy turned dinner into an unforgettable experience. Honestly, I don't think our visit would have been quite the same without her. At one point in my life, I ate sushi all the time. Then, I took a long break, due to skimpy portions, exorbitant prices, and mediocre quality. My girlfriends who are also my colleagues decided to pick sushi as our monthly event. I hadn't been to Shoyu Sushi before. The interior is small but spacious at the same time. The bathrooms are very clean. Music is vibrant. We ordered miso soup and I almost didn't. But I am glad I did! It is the best I have had. The garlic edamame was addictive. The young lady who was waiting on us was straightforward and accommodating. I ordered the hama-hama roll and it was good and generous in portion. I ordered another fresh roll but forgot the name and it was too spicy for me but good. The only bummer was Shoyu did not have green tea ice cream. I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet. It's difficult to find decent restaurants on the east side, especially a sushi place, but Shoyu Sushi is a gem on the east side. It's not a fancy place and is definitely just where us East siders go, but it saves you a trip downtown or even worse Rosedale or the southwest. The sushi is always good. They, thankfully, don't throw a bunch of unnecessary sauces on their sushi. The miso is also always good. They have gluten free soy sauce in the back for celiac folks. They give you these little eggplant treats before your meal, which is an unexpected perk. The service can be hit/miss. If you have the staff that have been there for a while they will be just fine. I've been seeing this place on my Instagram feed and decided to try it today with my son. We went after the lunch rush, so it was nice and quiet in the restaurant. We went to the location on Mount Vernon, and when you walk into the store it is completely different than it looks on the outside. The menu is good, and has a lot of options even for people who do not eat sushi. We tried the baked scallop roll, a California roll on rice, paper, vegetable tempura, a kitchen, bento box with chicken teriyaki, and Don Katsu, which is pork, and yakisoba with Chicken. The portions are large at the restaurant, so definitely shareable. The vegetable tempura was delicious and was served with one of the best tempura dipping sauces I've had. The outside had the perfect amount of tempura batter, and it was fried to perfection without making the veggies, soft or wilted. The Bento box was delicious and was a huge portion. It was served with a salad with a ginger sesame dressing that was mixed with a little bit of peanut butter, and I didn't care for it too much, I prefer mine without the peanut butter. The chicken teriyaki was tasty, the pork was also delicious, and the box also came with four pieces of California roll, and I ordered mine on rice paper. The yakisoba was OK. It didn't taste like much... It was a good portion, but it was missing the essence of wok stir fry flavors such as sesame oil, onions, garlic, soy sauce, and salt. I think my favorite thing in our meal was the baked scallop roll. Again, it was a fairly large portion, and definitely shareable. This roll was very fresh and topped with baked baby scallops, spicy mayo, and eel sauce. We also ordered the Bako roll, and that was good. It had salmon, cream, cheese, spicy crab meat, and was tempura fried, and topped with a dollop of Sriracha on each piece and a slice of jalapeño or serrano pepper. Overall the place was clean, and the staff were very friendly, and our waiter provided great service. We sat in a booth, and it was not as comfortable as a booth should be. There was no padding on the seats, and we could feel the frame of the booth, and the cover on them was peeling off. Overall, this place was good and will definitely go back when I am in the mood for sushi! read more

I've never heard of it but it was so good! I stopped in on a Tuesday evening to grab dinner. This is the second time I've been to this spot. The restaurant is located in a small unsuspecting shopping mall behind Bakersfield College. I was immediately greeted and told to sit anywhere I'd like and took a spot at a booth. I explored the menu and appreciated the delineation between different types of rolls, including baked ones. I ordered the Washington roll and a veggie roll. Immediately after placing my order, I was given pieces of tempura to enjoy. The rolls came out and were sizable. The Washington roll had a nice balance of lemon, particularly helpful given the hot summer day. I enjoyed the salmon exterior. The roll had a sauce already, so a minimal use of soy sauce was needed. I went to Shoyu Sushi on Mt. Vernon and University for lunch today. The interior was cool with dimmed lights. The hostess was prompt coming to take my order. I ordered the bento box 1. It was just after 1pm so I figured I missed the lunch rush, as I was the only person in the restaurant at the time. Another couple came in a few minutes later and sat across the restaurant from me. She said to sit anywhere I'd like, and mentioned that the owner was sitting at the bar. I chose a table about 10 feet from them. The food came quickly, and was very tasty. My only complaint is that the hostess sat at the sushi bar with the owner drinking beer and seemed to be arguing with him the whole time I was there. She never checked to see if I'd like to order anything else (which I did actually). She didn't even ask me if I wanted a drink refill. When I was done I sat and watched them continue for about 15 minutes as I waited for my bill. I finally left my table and went to the register. So I guess no clue, and apparently not much class. I don't think I'll be coming back anytime soon. read more
