4/6/26 First visit. Parking 5/5 Arrived ~ 10 am this morning after Court. At this time Friday there was plenty of street parking in front of or nearby. There is also a nice parking garage accessible via the alleyway between buildings under the apartments (see photo). Atmosphere 5/5 This is a One-off small business cute cafe rating. There is season appropriate seating curbside in front on Main Street. Today we enjoyed our takeout dessert in front it was such a neat overcast day. On the inside there are item for sale on small wall shelves in the dining room and freezer refrigerators giving it a small town vibe. There are approximately 6-8 tables for eat in service. As the summer temperatures arrive these tables will become even more in demand. This is a quaint Gluten Free eatery with a nice selection offered in menu. Service 5/5 This is a take menu to table, decided then return to counter to order. Orders are delivered to your table. Helping us today was Paula. She was the ambassador to the restaurant who welcomed us immediately. She asked if we've been in before and once we responded no, she thoughtfully walked us through everything including the Gluten Free information. Food 5/5 Both of us were hungry for breakfast and we were ready for this new experience. Coffee was severed in large and individually unique cups. Coffee was nice. 4-Eats we ordered for inside service; a powdered sugar Waffle and I ordered their biscuits and sausage gravy. Sides were two eggs over easy and two sausage patties for additional protein. Desert were two oatmeal cookie pies the we enjoyed curbside in front. Our breakfast choices were fantastic. For mine I ordered too much because the sausage in the gravy would have been sufficient due to their generous serving size. I will order the same thing less the two Patties. Desert 5/5 Our picks were delicious and will require another extra 30 minutes in the gym! $67.90 includes generous tip for excellent service! If you're in the Downtown Mesa area put "Against the Grain" on your list of places to eat. Eat well my friends-SYOY!

OMG we are so happy to find a gluten free place with GREAT FOOD!! They have dairy free options as well which is beyond exciting. We also got a dairy free chocolate cake and it was THE BEST EVER. The service was also super great! We will 10000% be back:)

I think I had very high expectations of this place since I'm a gluten free person myself. Maybe it was because we went 20 mins before they closed, but our meal was mid seems to just be thrown together &' not portioned properly, ordering is a bit confusing too, I wasn't aware your order had to be placed at the register they don't take your order at the table so we sat a while waiting til we were told. Maybe I need to give it another try. They seem to be busy &' lots of foot traffic. I got a chicken Alfredo, way too much cheese.. not enough sauce. Fries were yummy.

Loved all of it. Friendly service and great food. The onion rings were perfect. Can't wait to try other items!

Love this place! Went here on a whim because I needed someplace relaxing to study, and this place was exactly that. The staff were super friendly and welcoming, and the service was quick. Now, onto my order- a bagel and iced tea. The iced tea was great, no comments, and the bagel was absolutely delicious! You can tell they make it here. I was also pleasantly surprised to see that this place is also a grocery store of sorts, with really good prices. They also have board games, so if you're coming with friends, you won't be bored. I will be coming here again. A very lovely experience!

I've only been here one but it was delicious! I had a blt sandwhich which was amazing fresh, but the other half I ate when I got to my destination was less so, I would recommend eating there vs taking to go, for that sandwhich at least. The bread was so soft and fluffy, and the blueberry muffin I got was great too, I'll be back to try more!

I can't believe I have just discovered this place. Being GF, I'm always looking for places that offer GF options. Well, this place is 100% Gluten free. Their food is so good. I took my family there and the rest of them are not GF and they couldn't even tell the difference. They have such an amazing biscuits and gravy. It was so nice to be able to eat biscuits and gravy, it's something I have missed from childhood. Theirs is so good. I also ate a breakfast biscuit which was also very tasty. We ended our last trip there with donuts which we all enjoyed. As an added bonus they do have a ton of gluten free products for sale, some that I didn't even realize existed. I highly recommend Against the Grain!

Great and central location in downtown Mesa. My husband and I were exploring the museums and shops nearby and stopped in here for lunch. The service is friendly and prompt. Their niche here is offering foods that are not naturally gluten free in a gluten free version. If you are looking for healthy- this isn't it. There doesn't really seem to be any naturally gluten free items on the menu such as a salad. Also it appears they don't really use vegetables much. My chicken wings didn't come with a side of celery or carrots- even though the menu shows a picture of celery. If you are dairy free like myself- there are some options on the menu, but it is quite limited. They do have vegan cheese for pizza. Don't expect any baked goods because there is nothing in the case dairy free. I asked for the sauce on the side of my wings and the chef forgot and dumped a bunch of sauce on the wings. The server did ask if this would be ok and I don't like wasting food so I said yes. But it was a lot of spice for me and would have preferred to have less buffalo sauce on the chicken wings. If you like tons of sauce- you will love their wings. The orange chicken was decent. Overall- I'm not going out of my way to eat here, but if I'm in the area I'll definitely stop by. I prefer to eat healthier and this doesn't have options for that. If you are looking for comfort food- this is the spot.

The food was fine, and the mocha was just chocolate milk with coffee. It wasn't for me, but I respect that everything was gluten free and still tasted decent. Also, top notch customer service.

Sally C.

Enjoyed a savory breakfast sandwich with coffee and picked up some tasty treats to bring to friends afterward, as a gluten free taste test. Nice little cafe with good coffee and friendly service. Mmm, yes the treats passed the test and we're headed back for more!

All the stars - I so wish this was a chain throughout the valley. Today we trekked to Mesa - this has been on my radar for some time and today was the day! We split the mozz sticks and the buffalo chicken sandwich. Can I tell you how AMAZING it is to have a GF bun that tastes normal? People don't understand how terrible their frozen GF options taste- making this place all the more special. Will definitely be back!

I had a few bad experiences the previous times I went here, but last time I got to talk to the girl who got moved into management. She was so kind and said to always feel free to ask for her when I go there. Of course their food was amazing as always! I went kinda late, super close to closing time, but I always feel like the environment is very calming. They have a lot of board games that you can play with while waiting for your order!

I didn't care to listen to the music while I was eating. Ordered fried cod fish special and chicken fried steak dinner (since they don't do breakfast). Fried fish was nice and crispy. Came with coleslaw which I thought was pretty good and fries were nothing special just crinkled fries. My chicken fried steak was decent size, nice and crispy. The mash potato and gravy was OK. Gravy could have used more seasoning, I don't ever put salt on my food but I was tempted. But mixed with fried steak balanced it out little bit. I also opted for soup of the day which was Albondiga. Soup was not quite Albondiga but it wasn't too bad. Over the atmosphere was nice minus random people singing. Food was for me just ok, lacked in flavor. I would give this place 3 and half but definitely not 4 worthy for me. I probably won't come here again.

It feels very hipster and very retro and it just has so much personality. There is a lot of outdoor seating in what is essentially a front yard. There are tables and string lights and lots of trees and there are even a couple of playground horses. When you walk in there is a hostess desk kind of pieced together with different pieces of furniture and above it is a turning disco ball. Could there be anything better? There are booths all the way around, and there are no tables - - but you can sit at the long counter and watch your food being made. That really is the best place to sit because it is so interesting to watch them. It's amazing to me that they can keep all those balls in the air and still make all this food so delicious. There is a small bar off to one side. Make sure you go to the bathroom. The bathroom is nothing special, just a room full of graffiti and stickers, but if you look up you'll see the ceiling covered with little pinatas and a little donkey in the hallway. The menu is just what you would think for a diner menu. You can order breakfast or some sandwiches, burgers, Mac and cheese, and there is a selection of dinner entrees. Sitting at the counter we saw a plate with a steak being prepared and it looked absolutely fantastic. We were not really very hungry, and just wanted a quick small bite. Have you got that Welcome Burger, and I got the Sasha. Hubby said his Burger was good, although it was quite small. The Sasha has smoked pork and they put the pork on the grill and it becomes a crispy kind of Patty of shredded pork, then they put the crispy shredded pork patty on a noble bun with coleslaw and a fantastic horseradish sauce. My sandwich was a 10 out of 10 for sure! I kind of feel like in Phoenix there are some areas that you can go to or not, but welcome diner is a place that everybody should go to at least once. I really want to go back for breakfast which is kind of shocking because I'm not a breakfast person.

Today, May 16th at VI on Signal Butte - rough start by a waitress who told both of us "I need to know your pie order. NOW." Resturant was not busy. Not at all. It was 4:15 maybe. Slow on a SUNDAY post-winter visitor rush on a late Spring day. Rushed. I pointed to my 3-6pm dinner choice of TURKEY. I showed her. "Just as it comes. She repeated it back to me as she typed in into her handheld computer. Chicken fried steak arrived. And a sausage looking oval patty shape of stuffing. Two long finger prints in it. I wondered if she picked up my loose stuffing as it's normally served here in America, or rather the chef did this to all who request it. I told my husband to look for spit in his food. My hubby? Nicest guy ever. But when he knows I didn't want and could not manage fried beef..but I had fasted 21 hours. I needed sliced fresh high protein meat. Wait another 15 min or eat the mess on my plate? I remember this saying if you l oh someone's attention the first three seconds and first three steps you'll spend the next 30 min trying to make them believe you're hiring. It's true. I was too tired this week to be extremely understanding but I'm never rude. I told my hubby let's both let this one go. And I said "But we won't return here." He nodded in agreement. Because I see people come in and sit down I see how tired they are and make quick calls to be able to turn their day around if only for a short time before they return home....to being a caregiver or to grieve a loss. Sad dinner and maybe she had a tough week too. But. But times 3 over.
