Love this place! Went here on a whim because I needed someplace relaxing to study, and this place was exactly that. The staff were super friendly and welcoming, and the service was quick. Now, onto my order- a bagel and iced tea. The iced tea was great, no comments, and the bagel was absolutely delicious! You can tell they make it here. I was also pleasantly surprised to see that this place is also a grocery store of sorts, with really good prices. They also have board games, so if you're coming with friends, you won't be bored. 4/6/26 First visit. Parking 5/5 Arrived ~ 10 am this morning after Court. At this time Friday there was plenty of street parking in front of or nearby. There is also a nice parking garage accessible via the alleyway between buildings under the apartments (see photo). Atmosphere 5/5 This is a One-off small business cute cafe rating. There is season appropriate seating curbside in front on Main Street. Today we enjoyed our takeout dessert in front it was such a neat overcast day. On the inside there are item for sale on small wall shelves in the dining room and freezer refrigerators giving it a small town vibe. There are approximately 6-8 tables for eat in service. As the summer temperatures arrive these tables will become even more in demand. This is a quaint Gluten Free eatery with a nice selection offered in menu. Service 5/5 This is a take menu to table, decided then return to counter to order. Orders are delivered to your table. Helping us today was Paula. She was the ambassador to the restaurant who welcomed us immediately. She asked if we've been in before and once we responded no, she thoughtfully walked us through everything including the Gluten Free information. Food 5/5 Both of us were hungry for breakfast and we were ready for this new experience. Coffee was severed in large and individually unique cups. Coffee was nice. 4-Eats we ordered for inside service; a powdered sugar Waffle and I ordered their biscuits and sausage gravy. Sides were two eggs over easy and two sausage patties for additional protein. Desert were two oatmeal cookie pies the we enjoyed curbside in front. Our breakfast choices were fantastic. For mine I ordered too much because the sausage in the gravy would have been sufficient due to their generous serving size. I will order the same thing less the two Patties. I think I had very high expectations of this place since I'm a gluten free person myself. Maybe it was because we went 20 mins before they closed, but our meal was mid seems to just be thrown together &' not portioned properly, ordering is a bit confusing too, I wasn't aware your order had to be placed at the register they don't take your order at the table so we sat a while waiting til we were told. I've only been here one but it was delicious! I had a blt sandwhich which was amazing fresh, but the other half I ate when I got to my destination was less so, I would recommend eating there vs taking to go, for that sandwhich at least. I can't believe I have just discovered this place. Being GF, I'm always looking for places that offer GF options. Well, this place is 100% Gluten free. Their food is so good. I took my family there and the rest of them are not GF and they couldn't even tell the difference. They have such an amazing biscuits and gravy. It was so nice to be able to eat biscuits and gravy, it's something I have missed from childhood. Theirs is so good. I also ate a breakfast biscuit which was also very tasty. We ended our last trip there with donuts which we all enjoyed. As an added bonus they do have a ton of gluten free products for sale, some that I didn't even realize existed. Great and central location in downtown Mesa. My husband and I were exploring the museums and shops nearby and stopped in here for lunch. The service is friendly and prompt. Their niche here is offering foods that are not naturally gluten free in a gluten free version. If you are looking for healthy- this isn't it. There doesn't really seem to be any naturally gluten free items on the menu such as a salad. Also it appears they don't really use vegetables much. My chicken wings didn't come with a side of celery or carrots- even though the menu shows a picture of celery. If you are dairy free like myself- there are some options on the menu, but it is quite limited. They do have vegan cheese for pizza. Don't expect any baked goods because there is nothing in the case dairy free. I asked for the sauce on the side of my wings and the chef forgot and dumped a bunch of sauce on the wings. The server did ask if this would be ok and I don't like wasting food so I said yes. But it was a lot of spice for me and would have preferred to have less buffalo sauce on the chicken wings. If you like tons of sauce- you will love their wings. The orange chicken was decent. Overall- I'm not going out of my way to eat here, but if I'm in the area I'll definitely stop by. I am writing this from the restaurant. I had to immediately tell the world how amazing the food was! I got the sweet and sour chicken. It was incredible. My husband had the meat lovers pizza and said it was so good that it was worth getting it even though it's easy to find gf pizza other places. My son agreed and said this was the best pepperoni pizza he has ever had. my other kids rated the pancakes and waffles 10/10. we enjoyed playing cards while we waited which wasn't a long wait! they have a nice selection of snacks and gf items to purchase. the bakery options and food menu is extensive. Justin & Amanda are super sweet and even let me sample their homemade bread, which I kinda gave up on bread because gf bread just isn't it, BUT their bread was really good and you can buy a loaf, and also I sampled their mozzarella sticks. We finally got to eat here after hearing about it months ago. We should've made more of an effort. Everything is gluten free. Everything! Donuts cooked to order (when was the last time you had a hot fresh donut?) The biscuits and gravy were spot on with a nice tough of spicy sausage gravy. While I'm not gluten free, my gf is. It's been forever since we could go out to eat without wondering if anything is still going to be an issue. I'm still waiting to hear about the cinnamon roll we took home.. I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease back in 2018 and living a GF life has been quite an adjustment. Diligently looking over ingredients, not eating at anyone's house anymore, not eating out at restaurants anymore because of the cross contamination. It can be very...limiting. Someone had recommended this restaurant to us and I knew I had to give it a try. They had pizza. PIZZA! I hadn't had pizza in years. We tried eating at Picazzo's back in 2018 and that pizza was so gross I just wrote pizza off as something I'd never be able to eat again. I was traumatized after eating that mushy cauliflower crust haha! The restaurant itself is located in the charming Downtown Mesa area. It was on the smaller size, but very cozy. I think we got there at a good time, because towards the end of our meal, it really filled up! I ordered the pizza. When they brought it to the table it looked like a real pizza. It smelled like a real pizza. When I took my first bite, I could feel the tears starting to well. Listen, I know this sounds so dramatic but fellow Celiacs who are as strict about what they eat as I am will understand. I was eating phenomenal pizza again. I didn't think that was going to be possible. No cauliflower crust. Actual amazing pizza with a crispy and chewy crust, and delicious toppings. So there I sat, teary eyed and elated enjoying my first piece of pizza in over 7 years. My family was there with me and it was such a great experience. The staff is very friendly and attentive. The selection is crazy! At our table we had loaded tots, ravioli, biscuits and gravy, french toast, bacon, eggs, and of course pizza. We raided the bakery case after eating for a treat for later. The Rice Krispy treats were sooooooo good! I can't wait to go back to get another. The blueberry muffin and chocolate cake were delicious too. You can't go wrong. They also have a pantry area. We had a little chuckle because they had so many items that we have or have had in our pantry as well. That was reassuring knowing I've been doing it right haha! I did find a Mongolian beef sauce that I've never seen before and ice cream cones!!! So we bought a couple pantry items as well. My whole family and I are so excited that I have a restaurant that we can eat at together again. One where I can eat too. I have celiac and it is always quite hard to find some decent food that is gluten free, and without cross contamination. Against the Grain is right by where I work, so I figured I would check it out. The place is a little hard to find but super cute when you walk inside. Their menu is pages long and has so many options. I have already been back twice now, and every time I've been served and my order has been taken the girls have been so extremely sweet. I got the bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit and it was amazing. Their donuts are just as good as I remember Bosa or Dunkin being. I am very pleased with this place and it is my new favorite spot, I will definitely be returning A LOT! Six of us came for luncheon Saturday afternoon. Granted it was the day downtown Mesa was giving out candy to the Halloween parade of youngsters. But we were a paying party of 6. I'd called in the reservation earlier that week only to see the table of 6 at the back occupied by a family having brunch. Okay, stuff happens. We were finally seated at the back. It took a minute( more than a minute but you get my drift here) to order, and longer to arrive in staggered service. I had fish and chips, three juicy pieces of highly seasoned cod and fries. Nothing wrong here. It was good. My friend ordered a sandwich on an inedible bun. Another had a chili dog on an equally inedible tough as nails bun with ice cold chili on top. We went to against the grain today in Mesa. The last time my daughter and I went there we had the sweetest person working there. The two girls working today were the biggest bitches. All of us were in an agreement of how bitchy they were. The first girl was so rude when we were making our order. My daughter can't have dairy. So she ordered a meatball sub with no cheese at all just the meatballs. And she looked at her and said very snotty you mean you only want meatballs and bread and that's it!!!! I'm talking in an extremely SNotty and condescending tone. The last straw was when the woman came out to give us our food. She had everyone's food except for my sandwich and my other daughter's sandwich and she looked at me only and pointed at me and said "your sandwich will be out in just a few seconds. Do you guys want any ketchup?" And at the exact same time she was asking "do you want any ketchup?" My daughter was looking at her boyfriend and said did you not order my sandwich? because the woman only mentioned my sandwich and she thought maybe he had forgotten. And I said to the women, very nicely - oh did you get her tuna melt sandwich, as well? She said in a VERY bitchy voice and a pissed off face- I'm asking you about the ketchup right now. Do you want ketchup or not? ........ like WTF??? And didn't even answer me!!! And our table just went silent and I just gave her that each shit look. And I said very sternly .... I know. I'm asking if you got her sandwich bc you only said that my sandwich was coming out in a few minutes but didn't mention hers so that's why I'm asking and NO we don't need ketchup. She proceeds to say "hers is coming out too" in a really bitchy tone. And then she turns around and grabs the ketchup out the refrigerator and SLAMS it on the table. My daughters and I all said at the same time - oh my god! I mean she slammed it!! And I very loudly said well that was rude. I wish I had hadn't already given them my tip. And then, after looking at the bill, they actually charged us $1 for making it dairy free. So they charged us extra for not putting the cheese on it. ..... it wasn't like they had to take an extra step to take the cheese off. They actually charged us for not doing an extra step. read more

I stumbled upon Against The Grain when walking around downtown Mesa. I was not planning to stop, but once I looked in the window I knew I had to check it out. I'm not GF myself, but can appreciate a good quality sweet treat. That's exactly what we got here at Against the Grain. We tried their banana bread and it was PERFECT! Had a meeting in Mesa today and stopped by this cute little cafe on my way home that's conveniently located in the heart of downtown Mesa, just steps from the light rail. The cafe resembles a mini market with a walk-up counter for ordering. When I first walked in, the owner greeted me from the counter, very nice guy. I was surprised to take a look at the menu and find a large variety of menu offerings, including a whole gluten-free menu. Happy to find a small family-owned and operated restaurant with great food that also serves breakfast ALL-DAY. I ordered the French Toast, eggs & a coffee; food and service was great! Stopped in on Sunday to try something different. I know it's gluten free, however I have had many gluten free items that I have made myself and they still had flavor and tasted good. This was not the case here. We ordered a hot ham and cheese sandwich, soft pretzel with cheese dip and fish and chips. Absolutely bland. The pretzel was not baked all of the way. The cheese dip was bland. The hot ham and cheese had two slices of ham for the whole thing. Overpriced and no flavor. Not worth the money or time. Inside it is family friendly and games. Even our non-gluten restricted friends have enjoyed the chicken fingers and pizza. Ramen is tasty. The only item I have had mixed experience with was the Oreo cheesecake. The first time we had the cheesecake it was really good and I was anxious to have it again. A week later, I bought it but was disappointed that it drier and not as creamy. The cinnamon roll is really good, especially warmed up a little (zapped in microwave at home for 15 seconds). Make sure to checkout their shelves of gluten free groceries. Our experience was not the best. We walked in as we were intrigued by the door and the idea of the food being gluten free.The lighting was dim and the inside felt dingy.
