Walked in right to pick up our Togo order right before they closed, was greeted by same man who took our order (evening of June 8th). He said we were the last group he was waiting to get the food for. (Didn't feel rushed or anything, I was just saying) The place is small, not too many tables to eat inside and is tucked away. Make sure you take N Miller St off main to get to parking lot, not Matlock. It's tucked behind some auto shop building or something. Pizza was pretty yummy, nothing spectacular. The crust was different from any pizza I had before. Also bummed that they didn't have wings.. he said they took it off menu. Ps- the guy who took our order was very patient, he may have been owner. Pizza was a 4 stars, but overall I'll give a 5 for review b/c guy was super nice and pizza was fresh! I ordered by phone before we left to pick up. The man was curt on the phone, no biggie. We came to this place, our first time, we like trying new pizza. I walked in, and there was a couple eating and a man waiting. I smiled at the couple eating, and they hastily looked away and pretended not to see me. Odd, lol. Anyway, I went up to the counter and saw an older man working. He saw me, didn't say anything, and continued on with whatever he was doing. I always dislike that, when workers in the food industry don't acknowledge you when you walk in. Anyway, the old guy finally walks up to me, not with a smile or friendly greeting, but he barked, with a scowl on his face, "What do you need?" I, taken aback with the way I was spoken to, took a couple beats to gather my words, and he said, "You call in?? What's the name?" I told him, and he said gruffly, "It's gonna be about 15 more minutes!" I said ok and sat down. Now, the man waiting for his pizza got REALLY friendly service, the same old man called out to him in a friendly tone, "Hey your pizza is right here! Have a good day and Merry Christmas!" When our pizza was done, he rudely said, "You pizza is ready!" And he turned and walked away and mumbled something to an older lady, who walked over to help us. Mind you, with that first interaction with that totally RUDE man, I almost just said "forget it, not dealing with someone like YOU today!", which is exactly what I do whenever I get service like this, but I was already late for a dinner date with my daughter, and going to ANOTHER place and waiting would put me way past the hour. So, I chose to suffer through the unease of the entire encounter. Sitting in there with unfriendly patrons and an ill mannered, impolite and discourteous "man" did NOT make for a pleasant experience. I'm so glad we weren't eating there, because all I wanted to do was run from that place of bad vibes. It was 28 dollars for a large pepperoni, which was surprising, since the Yelp said it was an inexpensive place. Oh well. We finally sat down to eat, and I asked my fellow consumers their honest opinion of the pizza. Top comment, the crust is good, it's flaky like a pie. One said it tastes like a frozen Red Baron pizza. I thought that it was BURNT, (see pic) and the most important thing of all pizza, the cheese STRETCH. There's no stretch whatsoever on this pie. There was no flavor in the sauce, or the crust. But I did like the edge of the pizza, that was good. All in all, the ONE star is for the pizza crust and the pleasant lady who took my money at the register, I guess the man didn't want to take our check like he so nicely took the Caucasian man's before us. I'm native American, and I went there with my native American son, and we felt very out of place at this establishment, but I can't say if we were treated the way we were treated by that ill mannered man because of this. But what else could be the reason for the offensive attitude toward us? I have no clue. We won't be going back. read more

Now that Ljs has become the "pizza patio" - the pizza buffet is gone but the pizza flavor is just like it always has been. First time coming here tonight, we came in and ordered to go, only a 25 minute wait and the food was absolutely delicious. We had the wings, cheese bread, a 2 pizzas (ham and pineapple & pepperoni and sausage) and while we waited we had some salad at the salad bar. Cute little spot, great staff, definitely coming back. Gave 2 stars just because everyone else seems to love this place and because all of the pictures on Yelp look amazing. I'm sure they would have got a 5 star rating from me (because that's what I do when I eat good food) however they don't answer their phone. I called 9 times in 1 hour and then gave up after feeling like a crazy person. So I didn't get to try LJs and was forced to eat Barros which gets my 50 bucks and the same score as LJs just because they answered the phone. Btw I don't suggest that place either. I was pleasantly surprised with the pizza here. It's definitely a hole in the wall, Ma and Pa shop, tucked away in north Mesa. I just got a pizza with pepperoni, ham, jalapeno, and onion. It was pretty good. The curst had a buttery layer flavor to it It reminded me of Home Run Inn pizza (frozen and Chicago pizzeria). The crust is perfection and they take their time and do it properly whereby the pizza comes out of the oven as a true masterpiece of beauty! This cute little restaurant is hard to see, and you probably wouldn't know that it was there unless you've heard of it/been there previously. The owners are amazing!! My wife and daughter recently visited family in Ohio for a week. All they wanted to eat on their return was LJ's. I heard it from them 3 times when they were gone. "We haven't had any pizza. Goodness I want some LJ's." I called Clay. It was close to closing time. Told him the situation. He hooked me up. And I met the beautiful Perry ladies on the North Curb of Terminal 4 with a surprise pizza. Happiness all around. LJ's... Good Pizza. Good People. GOOD. GOOD. GOOD. By the way. The place is kind of hidden so it took us a while to find it in the dark, but we are SO glad we did. It seems like it may be more popular for takeout pizza but we're so happy we dined in. We had a great experience. Kathy who served us is so sweet, and she even played with our 3 year old son who grabbed her hand and wanted to play with her. Absolutely a hidden gem. I've been going to this little pizza joint since the late 80's. It's a family owned spot that hasn't experienced much change since opening in 1974, except for the name (it started as a Pizza Inn). Somewhere along the way, LJ bought out the franchise and the legend of sauerkraut pizza was born. Yes I said sauerkraut! That's only one of very unique specialty pizzas on the menu (one of my personal favorites, along with the barbeque). In my nearly 20 years of making the occasional afternoon trek to Mesa from central Phoenix I have always been treated well by the wait staff (most of which have been there that entire time), have never been disappointed in the pizza, and usually look forward to the mini ice-cream cone served with every meal (except when I have returned to the buffet line one too many times). If you are a first timer, I would suggest going for the lunch buffet served Monday through Friday from 11'ish to 3'ish or on Saturday evenings from 5 to 8. You get to sample every pie they make and if you don't see it on the serving line, just ask, they will have one made up just for you and deliver it straight to your table within 15 minutes. As the other reviewers have stated, don't go for the decor, but the atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable. Speaking of comfy... take the big pants along, or make sure the ones you are wearing have an elastic waist. Don't head my warning and you may risk physical injury as overly tight pants are known to cut off critical blood flow to the remainder of the body. : ) read more

If you are reading any of the old reviews pre 2012, the old restaurant is gone and a smaller LJ's cafe has re-opened right behind where the old restaurant is located. This place is a must for people who like think crust pizza! Rocking pizza recipes that haven't changed since they moved to the low overhead shack of a restaurant. The cooking method and quality ingredients are wonderful. Recommended items-- Try cheesy garlic bread. Pork sausage topping is unique and delicious, Specialty combos are good....try a mexican pizza sometime for a change of pace(but do a medium and get your goto pizza as well...slice or 2 good, but their typical pizzas are best. Only thing i would say to pass on is the salad. It used to be great when they had the restaurant salad bar. Now that they pre-package the dressings, I am not a fan. It tastes like the dressings are out of a bottle from the store vs mixed up from scratch(not sure if they actually mixed the dressings at the old restaurant, but it was good dressing I found myself craving with the whole pizza experience) Thanks for keeping it going clay! Wish you still had the old restaurant and buffets, but of course am grateful you have the current place. Let me know if you ever consider a franchise opportunity ! It's been said that pizza is like sex: when it's good it's really good, and when its bad it's still pretty good. Well, I definitely wasn't wearing my "O face" when I left this pizza buffet. I came here to have lunch with Rand H (I see myself as the apprentice of the Buffet Master of the Valley). The pizzas were not horrid but all were too salty for me and seemed to taste the same no matter what the topping ... except for the taco pizza, which had lettuce and corn chips on it. All of them had so much oil that I could have lubed my car with the slices I had for lunch. The salad bar was OK, and our meal ended with a soft-serve ice cream cone - and we weren't allowed to serve ourselves for this dessert. And the bill, with tax, came to ten bucks flat! I got so much more food choices and much better quality food at The Pizza Buffet and Much Much More, at half the price! LJ's was an interesting place to go to: it seems to have been there forever and seems to have a loyal following from the neighborhood. But because of the quality of the food and the outrageous price, this will be my one and only visit to this place. read more
