We have ordered pizza from Nello's since they opened in 1983. We keep going back because their pizza is the best in Arizona ! The pizza is always ready on time and is absolutely delicious. Hadn't had Nello's in years! I was bragging about how good it was to someone and how good their spaghetti was especially considering I'd never order spaghetti from anywhere. I was sad to find out they no longer have it. This may show how long it's been since I've been there. I thought surely the penne with meat sauce and a meatball on the side had to be just as good. So after craving it I placed a to go order. Adding a picture to show how little "meat sauce" was added to the pasta. Half was completely dry. This was after mixing it a little to see if maybe the sauce was in the bottom. Nope. Also a little confused at the term meat sauce. Is there not meat in meat sauce? This was the smallest amount of pasta sauce. The meatball I got on the side was so dry I could barely cut through it with a fork. I will say the bread they gave was good! I want to start by saying the pizza itself is very good, which is why this experience was so frustrating. On Friday, the day before our wedding, I went into the restaurant and placed and paid for a large pizza order with a confirmed pickup time of 5:30 PM the following day. I also tipped when I placed the order, bringing the total to $150, expecting the pickup to be simple and smooth. The restaurant is only about 7 minutes from our venue, so the plan was simple: someone would run over, grab the pizzas, and bring them back so we could feed our guests. When the person picking up the order arrived on Saturday, they were told there was no order in the system and that it had never been placed. I wasn't there personally, but I was told the staff were rude and didn't clearly communicate what was happening, whether the order would be remade, or how long it would take. I ended up having to deal with proving that I had ordered and paid for the pizzas while in the middle of my wedding. They eventually made pizzas, but what should have been a quick pickup turned into more than an hour. During that time we had nearly 30 people standing around hungry waiting for food, and it threw off our entire wedding timeline, including our photographer schedule. To make matters worse, the order was also incorrect. I had paid for three pepperoni pizzas (which cost more), but none of the pizzas we received were pepperoni. The pizza itself was good once we finally got it, but the entire situation was incredibly stressful and not what you expect when you've already paid and tipped in advance. I hope the owner sees this and looks into what happened that evening so another customer doesn't have the same experience during an important event. read more

I go here once every couple weeks. Have for years. Rest rooms are dated and need remodeling. Two TVs are broken and have been since the new owners took over. Outside patio is dirty and outside their area needs attention. Even their bench shows a weathered, unkept appearance. Up keep says something about the new owners. Now the food. Pizza is excellent. Sandwiches are mostly good. No fries, just packaged chips. Not the same caliber as it was originally but good. Don't order the meat balls unless you like a clump of hamburger. Brian, the original owner, would always be behind the bar greeting people who walked in. That's history. The servers are wonderful and always attentive to your needs. Don't complain about an under or overcooked dish. They say the cook gets mad and blames the servers. If you like Old Chicago, this would be the place to bring back the memories. First time visit after hearing great reviews. Came in between lunch/dinner crowd. Place has an old school pizzeria vide. Not too busy and no wait. Was greeted and seated quickly. Ordering was easy. Menu had a lot of great options but not overwhelming. Ended up with garlic cheese bread, mini pizza, and a small pizza. Everything was cooked to perfection with not major wait times. I'm so sad, Nello's just isn't the same as it used to be. The menu doesn't look different but the items just aren't up to par. Caprese dropped at our table had tomato slices that were the top and bottom of the tomato and half slices. I brought this to the servers attention and she explained there was someone new in thr kitchen. Eventually she brought out 1/2 slices of tomato that appear to be slice for sandwiches. Margarita Pizza, in the past, had chunks of tomatoes in the sauce and a reasonable amount of cheese. What I received on the last two occasions was pizza crust with just enough tomatoes and cheese to show its presence but hardly enough to enjoy those things as toppings. The pizza was brought out undercooked. The cheese was white and not cooked to Golden brown. When I asked about it I was given major attitude over it like I was the problem. It's ashame because ppl I know swore by this place. It's crazy to make a customer feel like they're the problem when obviously the pizza was crap out the gate. I will never ever go there again and I can't remember the lady's name that served us but she was a nasty person and I would put her on blast if I had her name and that is something I almost never do. My family and I like to try different pizza places. Some fail miserably, (not mentioning any names here,lol), and others, like Nello's, are SHINING STARS! First of all, our server was courteous, accommodating, and brought us our grub with a genuine smile. We had questions about the salad, which we ended up getting the "small". Don't be fooled by the name, it's HUGE! It's simply made with lettuce, tomatoes, black olives and TONS of cheese. The house dressing was tomatoey, my daughter said it reminds her of the sauce you get for the Lunchables pizza! It was tangy, tasty, and the entire shabang hit that iceberg salad hunger spot! We ordered the supreme pan pizza. and although there was only a SLIGHT cheese stretch, pull, string... lemme tell ya, ohhh was it SCRUMPDIDDLYUMPTIOUS! We all agreed that Nello's pizza wins the Mesa competition because of the amount of cheese on the pie. Most places we order from, they're so STINGY with the cheese it feels like Scrooge is hiding in the kitchen! Service was good!! Our salads were excellent, and the small is huge! Definitely for 2 people! But, both couples at our table ordered thin crust pizzas. And both pizzas came out as thick crust. The waiter looked shocked, checked his order from us, & said sorry. Now he did ask if we wanted a do over, but unfortunately we said no, we would take what he brought. But it was not good. Too thick, dough was dry, and basically it was very bland! We even salted it, but no. Not good. We didn't take ours home. I didn't even eat a whole piece. Came for my cousin's bday party which 16 people. The staff were very accommodating (we called ahead), and gave us our own back room. Our server did a great job coming around and taking everyone's orders. I was not in the mood for pizza, so I went with the garlic butter pasta and the caprese salad appetizer. I will say, I was not a fan of either dish. The caprese salad had good mozzarella cheese and tomatoes which did taste very fresh, but the rest of the dish seemed a little random. I did not like the olives or the peppers. The garlic butter pasta did not have much flavor to it. I wish I would have gone with the marina pasta. I did not eat much of the pasta. My family members said that they all enjoyed the pizzas, which they were big slices which were stacked with cheese and toppings. The salads are large and come topped with a lot like mushrooms. A nice family friendly place. I do wish they had some more options on the menu like wings, but besides that they do offer a good amount of pizza options. read more

I hate writing this since Nellos has been my favorite pizza place for over 30 years. We live a little far now, but would still order out several times per year. We were recently in the area and took our family of 4 (adults) to dine in at dinner time. 2 medium 12" pizzas, 1 large, a family salad and tap water to drink..... $84. If that isn't enough, they charged an undisclosed (either that or too small to notice) extra fee for using a credit card to pay. We no longer support restaurants who choose to add on a fee to use a card. Besides, the menu prices are far more than other pizza places we normally use. And then there was the pizza. Not sure what happened but it was undercooked, way too much cheese with not enough of the toppings we paid extra for, and some slices with 1 pepperoni. Then the leftovers we took home had some sort of plastic packaging material we discovered while taking a bite. My family loves pizza but will never eat it at this place again. My hole family had to get something else to eat when we went home, the large pizza was not even enough to fill one person. The only thing you can do to improve is hire more staff. 2:30 on a Saturday and you had a kitchen full of people and two wait staff for the whole place. Nearly all the tables were not bused and cleaned from previous guest. One person working the bar, one person working the rest of the place. We stopped here for a few drinks and a light snack after a nice morning hike. I went with an always favorite Kiltlifter and my gf had the special Papago Blueberry. The beer did not disappoint. The bar tender was pretty on top of all the customers there. It didn't seem like anyone had to wait for anything. The caprese plate was plenty for our snack. The cheese and basil and tomato was fresh and the basil leaves smelled great. The bar area was pretty busy and you could tell there was a handful of regulars there. He nearly died two different times. Once from low blood pressure and the other from Oregon failure. My husband is a very fit and strong person. Reported incident to Maricopa County health department and environmental services and have no idea if they did a on-site review because we have heard nothing back from them. I will tell you the place was very crowded and it's the second time I've been there in a week. Celebrating birthdays! The price range is medium. The seating is plenty. There were plenty of bigger tables. The service was fantastic. The family restaurant there were plenty of families in there with little kids and adults. I will be back. Well, I was craving Nello's salad with their tomato dressing, I live in far north east Mesa so not a close drive. After I got home from my trek, I opened my salad and put some on a paper plate and a beetle started crawling out! Literally almost threw up! I called and the guy was surprised and said let me get a manager for you. She was so rude and says "it happens", so what you're telling me is you don't wash your lettuce. I've been a longtime Nello's customer and got dinner to go tonight. I found two long black hairs in my meal, which is disgusting and unsanitary. I called the store to let the manager know, and the manager on duty could not have cared less. She was dismissive and uncaring. She just wanted to refund my money and get me off the phone. I know things like this can happen, and their food is usually good, but the service tonight from the manager was horrible on top of it. We had an event in the small room. We were using Zoom for a hybrid meeting and that's where we ran into problems. There is no door and the kitchen is right outside so lots of noise. And there is only one electrical outlet which meant we couldn't set up all the equipment needed. We made do, but it lessened the experience for those online. We also didn't set the room up correctly for our needs. There are really too many tables and chairs in the room for moving around. We only had 12 people and we were cramped. It probably works fine for a kids party, but not for a meeting. The food and beverages were great. Huge salads (love their house dressing), great pizzas. Nice beverages. Wish the room was larger, had extension cords and less furniture! Our server was great, but over-extended. It took forever to get our bill paid. But will come back for the food. read more

I was in the area today and it was the perfect opportunity to try nellos. Being from the Chicago area, I appreciate a good deep dish crust pizza. Nellos was not too bad! We got cheesy bread, a mini spinach pie, and a large cheese pizza. The spinach pie was my fave, I loved the toppings. Only complaint was that it did get pretty soggy in the middle though. My husband and I liked the cheese pizza but agreed that it needed more cheese and less sauce, but otherwise tasty. The sauce is sweet but also spicy, it's unique. I would prefer the crust a little but crispier but it was still good. Overall not bad and I'd be down to try their thin crust. Oh Nellos, how much I have missed you!! I can't tell you how many years it has been since I've had Nellos pizza, but it still tastes the same. Same authentic crust, toppings, and feel. Wow! After so many years how are they able to keep the same amazing taste? I am not sure, but my friends and I all agreed that the food was delicious! We had a little improptu high school reunion and Nellos is right up the street from the high school we all graduated from. Nellos was always the go to spot for me for great pizza! They were able to get us sat on the patio with heaters. Our waiter was attentive and very kind. I decided to get their small pizza with original crust and spinach and pepperoni toppings. Wow! Every bite was sooo good! The cheese was full of flavor, so cheesy and thick! The thick crust made everything pop and I am so glad that I have leftovers!
