Meatball and pepperoni pizza
Matthew M.

Decided to try Nellos for the first time in over 10 years. I enjoyed it all the times I've eaten there in the past so I wanted to see if anything's changed. I am happy to say that I'm still just as happy today as I was all those years ago, with the food quality, the Service, and I most definitely will be going back!!

Caprese. Tomatoes, thin slices from top and bottom of Tomatoes.
Valerie M.

I'm so sad, Nello's just isn't the same as it used to be. The menu doesn't look different but the items just aren't up to par. Caprese dropped at our table had tomato slices that were the top and bottom of the tomato and half slices. I brought this to the servers attention and she explained there was someone new in thr kitchen. Eventually she brought out 1/2 slices of tomato that appear to be slice for sandwiches. Margarita Pizza, in the past, had chunks of tomatoes in the sauce and a reasonable amount of cheese. What I received on the last two occasions was pizza crust with just enough tomatoes and cheese to show its presence but hardly enough to enjoy those things as toppings. I felt like I was eating flavored pizza crust. This location gets busy with families and fills up quickly.

The Bar and a Sign

How long have I been eating here? Oops, ran out of body parts appropriate for counting. How long ago was 1989? We stopped in again, May 1, 2024, reminding me why we keep stopping here to eat. Giant ice tea, super fresh, generous salad. Mom's House Italian dressing, no splinters of course. Pizza. Oh yes, Nello's Pizza. Used to eat regular crust, now choose thin crust. Always get a pepperoni, now adding pineapple, olive, mushroom. It's all Chicago and Phoenix inside with a warm, friendly bar. I did not catch our server's name. My bladder dominates my life like health dominates many conversations. I was occupied when Set Up was going on. I was always too serious for lovely-smiling friendly women like our server. As I say, "A lovely smile makes my heart rich." I am a wealthy man today. The diamond cut slices let's me be petite in my pizza inhalation, plus leaves more crunchy edge pieces for all. I brought a guest here once. They complained it wasn't Really Chicago pizza. They weren't Really from Chicago at all. What did they know? They did love the salad. Are my 85 ABC's in yet Dear? Over and Awayyyyyyyyyhh.

This was my lasagna covered in shaved Parmesan, and it was absolutely fantastic

The food was absolutely fantastic. I took a friend who has never been and she enjoyed her salad and pizza. I will tell you the place was very crowded and it's the second time I've been there in a week. Celebrating birthdays! The price range is medium. The seating is plenty. There were plenty of bigger tables. The service was fantastic. The family restaurant there were plenty of families in there with little kids and adults. I will be back. I will be getting that gluten-free buffalo style chicken because it was fantastic. I appreciate them being such a great place. It had been 30 years before had been back. The place was the same. Great service great food.

Kiltlifter and Papago Blueberry
Pete M.

We stopped here for a few drinks and a light snack after a nice morning hike. I went with an always favorite Kiltlifter and my gf had the special Papago Blueberry. The beer did not disappoint. The bar tender was pretty on top of all the customers there. It didn't seem like anyone had to wait for anything. The caprese plate was plenty for our snack. The cheese and basil and tomato was fresh and the basil leaves smelled great. The bar area was pretty busy and you could tell there was a handful of regulars there. I love the knotty pine look of the bar and dining area to give it that old country look and feel.

Gross! See the beetle!? Came out of my salad!
S M.

Well, I was craving Nello's salad with their tomato dressing, I live in far north east Mesa so not a close drive. After I got home from my trek, I opened my salad and put some on a paper plate and a beetle started crawling out! Literally almost threw up! I called and the guy was surprised and said let me get a manager for you. She was so rude and says "it happens", so what you're telling me is you don't wash your lettuce. I've been coming here for forever (AZ native) and her tone, how dismissive she was and argued with me about my refund and said I may get it Tuesday. I'll never return! What a waste of my time, gas, and clearly food, and a waste of my breath dealing with this careless "manager". I also just read a previous review. Think I need to contact dirty dining as they may need to pay a visit to this gross establishment. You should be appalled at the disgustingness and that woman representing your bu

The pizza is OK. It was thin pizza. Nothing special about it. I've had better. I've had worse.

I was super stoked to check a place with "retro" in the name out, and I gotta be honest here, I left with pretty mixed emotions about a lot of things. The restaurant itself is pretty boring inside, mostly just being black with a few small pictures hanging up. I was kind of expecting big retro movie posters or something hanging around, but I definitely didn't get much of a retro vibe from this place minus a small neon "bar" sign and a claw machine in the corner. The menus were very cool, right by the front door its a record shelf and the records were the menus, so thumbs up for that idea. I thought i was mistaken, but I don't remember seeing sandwich prices on the actual menu, but as I look at other photos on yelp it does appear that the sandwiches don't have prices attached to them, which explains why I was thrown off by the end price. I settled on ordering the "take on me" which was black forest ham, roasted turkey, hickory smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, lettuce, and mayo on a Hawaiian style roll. I also ordered a sprite and a chocolate chip cookie as a side. The chocolate chip cookie was okay, pretty standard cookie though definitely not worth $3.75. The sprite was $2.99, and the sandwich came to $15.58. I was also charged $0.96 for something called the advantage program which I have no idea what that is. I gotta say, spending over $25 on a sandwich, a small cookie, and a drink is not something I would care to do at a place like this. The sandwich itself was very good, I won't deny that. The meat tasted fresh, and when it was all together it was definitely a good sandwich, but when there's not combo option and a basic sandwich, cookie, and drink ends up being $25 it's gonna be a no from me on returning in the future. Overall, I really wanted to love this place for the name, but the lack of much decorations and prices left something to be desired. The food itself was good, but not worth what was spent.

By using Hayden Flour Mill products in his recipes, collaborating with local businesses, and partnering with fellow entrepreneurs, he fosters a network of sustainable practices and mutual growth. I've been here once so far and honestly, I'm not just a fan. I'm an air conditioner! I'll admit that on that Saturday that I came across Don Guerra, I had originally went to another bagel shop that was sold out of bagels two hours before closing. I was disappointed as that place wasn't nearby. But this place, Don Guerra Bagel & Slice, is so close to home that I'm embarrassed to admit I should have came here sooner. - Slice Potato & Onion Pizza Combo ($11.00 - Olive oil, sea salt, mozzarella and parmesan cheese, red onion, potato, rosemary, honey drizzle. Option of salad, chips, or wheatberry salad): We got this with the wheatberry salad and a 20 oz cold brew to wash it down with. As someone who loves a good potato pizza, this one right here... oh my gosh. It even beats another place's potato pizza from a local cidery that I truly love. Get this. GET IT. - Jalapeño bagel with lox cream cheese ($6.00 - 85% whole grain sonoran wheat flour, sourdough leavened and no added sugars or oils): I heard the lox cream cheese was really good with the rosemary and salt bagel by one of the staff members but I couldn't pass up a good jalapeño bagel. And honestly, this bagel was perfection. Had I been in a skirt, it would have flipped over how good it was. - 6 Pack of Jalapeño Bagels ($18.50 - 85% whole grain sonoran wheat flour, sourdough leavened and no added sugars or oils): The bagel I got was so good, I had to order more for the week. I enjoyed the heck out of these for the next few days. - Chiltepin Cream Cheese ($6.50): As soon as I saw "chiltepin," I was sold. A Chiltepin or Bird Pepper, is a wild, hot pepper native to the Americas, often considered the ancestor of cultivated peppers. It's a perennial shrub with small, white flowers and tiny, red, very spicy berries that are dispersed by birds, and it thrives in warm, sunny conditions with well-draining soil. My grandma and parents use to grow them and I didn't realize how good I had it until I tried looking for my own chiltepin plant to grow. I can't find any so I guess I'll just have to come here for some cream cheese. - Chocolate Cherry Loaf ($12.00 - Only sold on Saturday and Sunday): Yum yum YUM!!! There's another local bakery in town that makes a chocolate cherry loaf but it's seasonal to Valentine's Day. Here at Don Guerra's Barrio Bagel & Slice, you can get it all year-long during the weekends. GET IT! - Sourdough Starter ($0.00 - FREE!): I was not a sourdough girlie during the pandemic but I've always been curious. Will this survive? We'll see. They have a helpful laminated sheet that teached you how to take care of your starter. Make sure you take a picture of it if you're attempting to start it. They're open daily from 7 AM-3 PM.

My partner and I got a few different breads to try out: half a dozen bagels, two different sandwiches on different breads, and their bread samples they had out. I was incredibly impressed with the bread quality overall. I can see why many of the customers before us only came in to buy loaves of bread for the week. As for the bagels, I'm incredibly picky coming from the northeast. The everything bagel is pretty sparse with toppings and what toppings it did have was mostly just poppy seeds. There was such a teeny tiny amount of garlic and onion! The actual quality of the bagel was good, but I'm a little sad about the topping situation. Not only that, there was a very hard pebble or grain bit (?) in my bagel. I'm not sure if it was in the bagel itself or somehow mixed into the topping, but it did not seem edible as it couldn't break down at all. I hope this was just a one time mistake! As for the sandwiches, the breakfast panini's best part was actually their focaccia. The rest of the sandwich components were okay. The beef slider is much smaller than the focaccia slices, the steamed egg easily falls out, and the chipotle aioli gets lost amongst the other components. I probably wouldn't get the panini again, but would happily buy the focaccia only. The Italian sandwich was a bit better. We got it on the torta roll, which was also very good. It's hard to go wrong with a classic italian sandwich. It does get a bit salty with all of the components combined, but could be offset with the combo with a drink. The samples they had out the day we visited were of two different sourdough breads. This was some good sourdough! It was very pleasantly tangy, but not too much. There was also a very good crumb and crust. The building is designed to be more of a fast casual and pickup kind of spot. There's shaded seating outdoors where you can also wait while your order is getting ready. They also offer online ordering and drive thru pickup. Although I wasn't as wowed by their bagels and breakfast offerings, the actual quality of their bread was so good that I would solely recommend their breads alone.

I was instantly impressed by the reviews I saw on yelp so I figured this would be a no-brainer ! Came in early on a Sunday afternoon for a coffee and a light snack , opted out of getting a snack since the sandwiches were $13 bucks and I wasn't feeling that hungry. My husband and I ordered the same thing we always get a coffee shop, " two iced coffees with cream and a splash of sugar free syrup" .. I went with sugar-free hazelnut and cookie butter, and my husband went with sugar-free vanilla and sugar free caramel. Let me start off by saying they were delicious and creamy, but I was taken back when I saw the receipt- 17 bucks for 2 iced coffees was bit ridiculous, I mean they were nothing fancy. I even snapped a photo of the menu to make sure I wasn't going crazy, but the price on the wall was different then what we were charged for. Nonetheless, they tasted good. The vibes were great inside, lots of space and little special touches inside.. would be great for a meet up or working from your laptop for a few hours, but there are too many great family owned coffee shops in the area that don't charge that much when you just wanna grab a coffee. Like I said the coffee was great, but I just didn't see the value.
