Its been a while since we have been here and finally got around to going back. Really glad we did. We sat at the bar and had great service and conversation with the bartender (didnt get her name but she was awesome). The place hasnt changed since we were there last and luckily, neither has the quality of the food. The antipasto salad and house Italian was delicious and so was the white pizza we ordered.

I want to start by saying the pizza itself is very good, which is why this experience was so frustrating. On Friday, the day before our wedding, I went into the restaurant and placed and paid for a large pizza order with a confirmed pickup time of 5:30 PM the following day. I also tipped when I placed the order, bringing the total to $150, expecting the pickup to be simple and smooth. The restaurant is only about 7 minutes from our venue, so the plan was simple: someone would run over, grab the pizzas, and bring them back so we could feed our guests. When the person picking up the order arrived on Saturday, they were told there was no order in the system and that it had never been placed. I wasn't there personally, but I was told the staff were rude and didn't clearly communicate what was happening, whether the order would be remade, or how long it would take. I ended up having to deal with proving that I had ordered and paid for the pizzas while in the middle of my wedding. They eventually made pizzas, but what should have been a quick pickup turned into more than an hour. During that time we had nearly 30 people standing around hungry waiting for food, and it threw off our entire wedding timeline, including our photographer schedule. To make matters worse, the order was also incorrect. I had paid for three pepperoni pizzas (which cost more), but none of the pizzas we received were pepperoni. The pizza itself was good once we finally got it, but the entire situation was incredibly stressful and not what you expect when you've already paid and tipped in advance. I hope the owner sees this and looks into what happened that evening so another customer doesn't have the same experience during an important event.

Decided to try Nellos for the first time in over 10 years. I enjoyed it all the times I've eaten there in the past so I wanted to see if anything's changed. I am happy to say that I'm still just as happy today as I was all those years ago, with the food quality, the Service, and I most definitely will be going back!!

Caprese. Tomatoes, thin slices from top and bottom of Tomatoes.

I'm so sad, Nello's just isn't the same as it used to be. The menu doesn't look different but the items just aren't up to par. Caprese dropped at our table had tomato slices that were the top and bottom of the tomato and half slices. I brought this to the servers attention and she explained there was someone new in thr kitchen. Eventually she brought out 1/2 slices of tomato that appear to be slice for sandwiches. Margarita Pizza, in the past, had chunks of tomatoes in the sauce and a reasonable amount of cheese. What I received on the last two occasions was pizza crust with just enough tomatoes and cheese to show its presence but hardly enough to enjoy those things as toppings. I felt like I was eating flavored pizza crust. This location gets busy with families and fills up quickly.

Dead TV

I go here once every couple weeks. Have for years. Rest rooms are dated and need remodeling. Two TVs are broken and have been since the new owners took over. Outside patio is dirty and outside their area needs attention. Even their bench shows a weathered, unkept appearance. Up keep says something about the new owners. Now the food. Pizza is excellent. Sandwiches are mostly good. No fries, just packaged chips. Not the same caliber as it was originally but good. Don't order the meat balls unless you like a clump of hamburger. Brian, the original owner, would always be behind the bar greeting people who walked in. That's history. The servers are wonderful and always attentive to your needs. Don't complain about an under or overcooked dish. They say the cook gets mad and blames the servers. If you like Old Chicago, this would be the place to bring back the memories. If not, there are better places.

My family and I like to try different pizza places. Some fail miserably, (not mentioning any names here, lol), and others, like Nello's, are SHINING STARS! First of all, our server was courteous, accommodating, and brought us our grub with a genuine smile. We had questions about the salad, which we ended up getting the "small". Don't be fooled by the name, it's HUGE! It's simply made with lettuce, tomatoes, black olives and TONS of cheese. The house dressing was tomatoey, my daughter said it reminds her of the sauce you get for the Lunchables pizza! It was tangy, tasty, and the entire shabang hit that iceberg salad hunger spot! We ordered the supreme pan pizza. and although there was only a SLIGHT cheese stretch, pull, string... lemme tell ya, ohhh was it SCRUMPDIDDLYUMPTIOUS! We all agreed that Nello's pizza wins the Mesa competition because of the amount of cheese on the pie. Most places we order from, they're so STINGY with the cheese it feels like Scrooge is hiding in the kitchen! But not THIS PLACE, they layer it on like people in Mesa layer on sweaters when the temp goes below 90 degrees! Don't miss out on this hidden gem of a pizza place! I only know of it from passing by whenever I'm Doordashing, and I'm happy I finally ventured in because this place appeased the cheese gods.

How long have I been eating here? Oops, ran out of body parts appropriate for counting. How long ago was 1989? We stopped in again, May 1, 2024, reminding me why we keep stopping here to eat. Giant ice tea, super fresh, generous salad. Mom's House Italian dressing, no splinters of course. Pizza. Oh yes, Nello's Pizza. Used to eat regular crust, now choose thin crust. Always get a pepperoni, now adding pineapple, olive, mushroom. It's all Chicago and Phoenix inside with a warm, friendly bar. I did not catch our server's name. My bladder dominates my life like health dominates many conversations. I was occupied when Set Up was going on. I was always too serious for lovely-smiling friendly women like our server. As I say, "A lovely smile makes my heart rich." I am a wealthy man today. The diamond cut slices let's me be petite in my pizza inhalation, plus leaves more crunchy edge pieces for all. I brought a guest here once. They complained it wasn't Really Chicago pizza. They weren't Really from Chicago at all. What did they know? They did love the salad. Are my 85 ABC's in yet Dear? Over and Awayyyyyyyyyhh.

Boy did I find it…read more There are a few Vito's in the Phoenix area, and all had great reviews and photos that made my mouth water. Ultimately I chose the Mesa store because it was the original and I wanted to see Mesa. We started with a basic garlic cheese bread appetizer and it was great. The calamari was tempting but we'll save that for next time. Wife ordered fettuccine alfredo with shrimp and I ordered the usual Chicken Parmesan which came with a side of pasta. It was actually a harder choice than usual because I walked thru the restaurant before I ordered and so many dishes looked good, as did the pizza. But I went with the usual. Let's start with the wife, which truly speaks to the five stars because she frankly doesn't love Italian food. She eats it when I beg. And she loved it. She actually proactively mentioned she wanted to go back. That's like 7 stars right there it's so abnormal. I agree with her. The chicken parm was fantastic. Amazing. To top it off, our server was great and when I mentioned we were new to the area and it was our first trip she was so nice telling us the history of the original and the other stores, and the manager later stopped by to continue that conversation as the server told her we were new. I mentioned that I live closer to the Scottsdale store, and she said it's the same food and I'll like it just as much. I'll have a hard time deciding which shop to return to - it might be worth the drive to the original just for the ambiance, but I'll give the other a try soon because it was just that good! 5 stars. Or 7 if you ask my wife.

Update from June 2026: My chicken Parmesan was great in terms of flavor. I ended up swapping the…read morebreaded chicken that normally comes with the meal for grilled chicken to avoid the oils from frying. I also subbed the sunrise sauce in and it was so delicious. My only complaint was the portion size for the price. Normally I would get to chicken pieces and have leftover chicken. I remember normally going in and being able to split this dish with my husband, but this time it came with one piece of chicken. This was a little disappointed for the price point and hoping to get more protein. The other really annoying part when dining at Vito's is parking. I circled around twice including the parking lot by the car wash and State Farm and called Vito's asking for advice where to park and was told Walgreens across the street due to a big party they were having in the basement. Lastly, Vito's has a happy hour menu, the discount used to be better in the past so lately I haven't ordered from it. However, the frustrating part is in the summer the only way to benefit from them is to sit outside on the patio. I wish they allowed for seating for happy hour specials during hot summer months to be inside as well.

The owner greeted us warmly and spoke passionately about the menu. We enjoyed interacting with her. We ordered an antelope burger (med rare) with side salad and a gluten free grilled cheese and tomato soup. Both were incredibly satisfying. The food was perfectly prepared and we finished every bite! With such delicious food and wonderfully friendly owner, I was surprised more people weren't beating down the doors to eat at this restaurant! But it does have a dated "old school steakhouse" vibe inside, which isn't exactly the ambiance preferred by our younger generations. We thought it was great, though. Give Il Vinaio a chance!
