A friend and I went to the Chinese festival at the Botanical Gardens and Afandi Kitchen had a food stand set up there. As unique as this stand was compared to the other food stands I knew I had to check it out since I had never tried or even heard of Uygher cuisine a day in my life. I am so glad I did because it was Amaaaaazing!!! I tried the Braised beef burger and the strawberry yogurt drink, my friend had the laghman and the mango yogurt drink. I liked the burger but I loved the laghman even more, and both of our yogurt drink tasted really good! Uyghur cuisine has been historically under-appreciated, so I am glad that it is being showcased in these delicious dishes served in a clean and bright space. Apparently, they are the only Halal Chinese restaurant in STL! We started off with pumpkin sambosas: deep fried triangles filled with beef and pumpkin, dusted with powdered sugar. A good mixture of savory and sweet. Then we had to try their yellow hand-pulled noodles and they did not disappoint! I loved the bouncy texture of the noodles. The thick sauce had notes of spice and was slightly unbalanced but still yummy. It was perfect to sop up with their soft fluffy naan. Lastly, we got the sautéed mala chicken which was a massive portion for $26 - by itself, it could probably feed 3-4 people! It was truly mala (spicy and numbing) with generous Sichuan peppercorns. The chicken was flavorful, though slightly tough. This dish would've gone well with the yogurt drink. Overall, this was a great dinner for 2 people with leftovers. The food is incredibly good. I've never had Uyghur food before and I've been missing out. I could eat the Uyghur salad every day of my life and be quite happy with that. The hand pulled noodles were wonderful but I personally would have preferred the dish with rice if it were an option. Just a personal preference...the noodles are great. My family stopped by Afandi Kitchen for lunch on a Friday. We were seated right away. The waitress was very nice and gave us some pointers since it was our first time. I tried the traditional yogurt and it was very good but quite a bit of ice. We ordered the southwest noddles, stir fry lamb with fried naan bread and the lamb soup. The noddle was my favorite and my family loved the lamb with naan bread. The soup was pretty disappointing with a few pieces of lamb and the flavor is pretty mild and I think the lamb could have been prepped better. Before getting into the food, I just want to shout out the great service here. It's miraculous that the two women and man could staff the front of this whole operation! Great work, brilliantly efficient, friendly and attentive. The food was great. We asked at the start what the staff would recommend between 2 seemingly similar appetizers, and they bluntly said that they really couldn't recommend between them because they were so different. This rang true for every single dish we ordered: even between the lamb skewers and shanks the flavors (and textures from their respective preparations: flame-licked vs. baked further) were wildly different, each packed with unique gamey lamb flavor. Lamb shank portions were on the smaller size (one order is not a meal), while skewers were adequately portioned. The noodle dishes were also remarkable, with textural experiences to pair with tantalizing flavor. We had the cold skin noodles appetizer, for which my wife and I both remarked that we wanted to drink the sauce of after finishing the curious springy yet spongy noodles. The brown sauce laghman was equally delicious, featuring chewy, long, slurpable noodles and quality (not grainy, bony or collagenous like you might get at the grocery store) ground beef. We finished with the homemade yoghurt desert with a generous helping of honey, walnuts and rose, and a purple rice yoghurt drink. After my first visit to Afandi Kitchen, it quickly became one of my favorites in town! I was pleasantly surprised to find a Uyghur restaurant in St. Louis and had to check it out. Uyghur food is definitely not your typical Chinese food, and if you like spice, garlic, cumin, and lamb, you'd love it. The restaurant, which is tucked away in one of many shopping areas in Chesterfield, is spacious and well-decorated. The TV is always playing food documentaries that get your appetite worked up before your meal. Although the staff are always busy (which is a good sign), the service has been great each time as well. The food is reasonably priced, generously portioned, and well seasoned. In the 3 times I've visited, I've yet to have had a dish that I was disappointed in. If you've never had Uyghur food and want a good introduction, I'd recommend the Big Plate Chicken, which has juicy, flavorful chicken with potatoes that have soaked up the delicious sauce and is served with hand-pulled, perfectly chewy noodles. If you're less adventurous, you cannot go wrong with Dry Stir-Fried Laghman. I'd describe it as the best version of a chow mein dish that you'd find at a regular Chinese restaurant. PS. It's not often that I get to try Uyghur cuisine so I was excited to try out Afandi Kitchen, which is in the old location of Urban Kitchen. We tried the hand-pulled dry stir-fried laghman noodles which were so flavorful and wonderfully chewy but came in a pretty small portion. They have a unique selection of drinks and I tried the Afandi purple rice yogurt drink which was a little too tart for me but perhaps that is how it's supposed to be served. Although we had a reservation, it took a good 20 minutes before the server came to take our order. We asked for our appetizers to arrive before our dinner and they arrived at the same time. Also, a couple of people in our party didn't receive their dinner until 10 minutes after the rest of us had ours. Our tea service was also late to arrival and didn't get served to us until we had started eating. Our party of six had a variety of items off the menu. I ordered these stirfry tomatoes with scrambled eggs and the spicy cucumber appetizer. Both of these items were very tasty and I would order them again. I also ordered a lamb kebab, which at $3.59 is a really good deal even though the kebab is rather small. It had a lot of flavor. The interior of the restaurant is no-frills, but the lighting is something to see. They have beautiful lighting in this restaurant. I'm really loving the diverse Chinese cuisine scene that we are having in the St. Louis area. Afandi Kitchen is offering a unique culinary experience that is not common in the US for Chinese food. They feature cuisine from the Northwestern part of China, known as Xin Jiang which you can find Turkic, Greek and Arabic influences. I ordered a few items that were signature to the region including the house special braised beef burger, stewed lamb soup, Uyghur grilled steak Yogurt wrap, lamb skewers, and the northwest rice noodles. I have to say my favorite is the Northwest rice noodles. I highly recommend you ordering it. The noodles were so chewy and soaked in the rich spicy sauce, which you can adjust the spicy level. It was so filling and addicting. The house braised beef burger was super tender. The meat was just falling apart after every bite. The stewed lamb soup took awhile to come out but was good as well. It's warm and comforting. I don't really recommend the lamb skewers since the meat felt a little dry. Same thing with the grilled steak Yogurt wrap. I ordered the Afandi Rose Tea and the Housemade Yogurt drink. They were both so good. The housemade yogurt is a must try for sure. Very different from the regular yogurt. Overall, I enjoyed my experience here and I would come back just for the Northwest rice noodles but I would also like to try more of their signature dish. A coworker recommended Afandi after I wouldn't stop squealing about Uyghur cuisine!! Was so so excited that there's a Uyghur place near St. Louis!!! Afandi was AMAZING!!! Do yourself a favor and GET THE LAGHMAN. You won't regret it!!!! So chewy and flavorful!!! Perfect noodle texture!!!! Just wow!! We tried both the traditional laghman (comes in a sauce) and the stir fried dried version with chilis. Both were so so good; the beef cooked perfectly as well. The stir fried version is my favorite--the traditional version had springier noodles and is easy to splash sauce everywhere by accident lol. Request mild if you have low spice tolerance!! It was so so good!!!! We also tried the beef pumpkin sambosa--it was savory but had a surprising dusting of powdered sugar I think on top. The crust was very nice. My fiance got lamb skewer which had delicious onions!! We loved Afandi so much we got another thing of Laghman for takeout along with a small version of the Big Chicken Plate (note this is bone-in chicken) for a party we were hosting. All of them great. The dishes were generally on the spicy side but perfect for us. The saute Malta chicken has an interesting pepper that is numbing and seemed to make other dishes seem less spicy.
