We have dined in and done take out from Basil India several times now and the service is always very good. The Lamb Biryani is our all time favorite and consistently delicious. My partner is picky about his lamb but always raves about how tender and well seasoned it is here. This time we wanted to try something new and got the Tom Yum soup and we were pleasantly surprised with how fresh and zesty it was. Their Flaky Paratha comes out hot and pairs so well with every dish. We tried an order of both the garlic butter and mint but discovered the garlic butter is much more flavorful. We always leave feeling full and satisfied! While the food is delightful the restaurant its self has a good amount of wear and tear that could use some sprucing up. Other wise the music creates a nice ambiance to sit and talk while waiting for your meal. We will definitely be back when we are craving Biryani again! read more

Came here for lunch. I had seen this place reviewed well on google so i thought i would give it a try. Generally I'm a pretty big fan of spicy foods, so i got the lamb vindaloo. the vindaloo was one of several curries which had a three chilli icon next to it, which seemed to indicate that this dish was spicy. the dish came out fairly quickly and came with rice, and my server was pretty friendly. i also got a paratha since i haven't had any indian bread in a while i felt like the vindaloo was fine. the biggest issue i had was that i really didn't think it was spicy at all, despite the fact that this is supposed to be one of the hotter dishes on the menu. probably adjusted for american palette. another issue i had was that i didn't feel like the vindaloo/curry had much depth to it; it tasted fine but wasn't really rich and was almost a little watery. the lamb itself was okay. the standout was probably the bread, though i kind of wish there was a little more overall i thought it was fine. i thought it was actually fairly pricey for what it was: $18 curry, 5 bread, 3 tax and 4 tip comes out to $30 for just an okay lunch, so... eh. maybe i would come back but it would probably depend on how much i felt like indian and if i was in the neighborhood already read more

Writing because this is my first carry out order from here. My food was ready in a timely manner. I commend Basil India for preparing the same portion for carry out as one would receive dining in. The flavor and aroma were pleasant as usual. I also appreciate that they wrap the vindaloo tightly in plastic wrap so it doesn't spill in transit. read more

This restaurant is situated on Grand Avenue, so be mindful that parking may be very limited. Upon entering the restaurant, the savory smell of spice hits you in a great way. The ceilings are very tall, so conversations from others were not heard while dining. Our server was very nice and explained any menu items we needed further clarity on. They start you with what I called veggie straws with a chili oil dipping sauce as a complimentary starter. They serve alcohol--mostly basic cocktails at very reasonable prices. For our appetizer, we ordered Bhindi Fries, which were french fries with their signature sweet chili sauce, which I could describe as what Thai Chili Sauce tastes like. It was topped with chives and cilantro and very irresistible. For our dishes, I ordered chicken Tikka masala while my friend ordered butter chicken. They both had a drizzle of heavy cream for flair. We also ordered garlic butter parathas, which were so flaky, buttery, and heavenly I want to make some at home. It paired well dipping into our dishes or solo. The chicken in my dish was very well seasoned and the perfect amount of heat for me. Every bite I savored! We returned to Basil India. The food is full of heat, even the selections marked 'mild.' We chose out items carefully keeping this in mind. The restaurant itself still looks hastily set up with a mush mash of tables and decorations. When we visited a year ago, they were new and perhaps did not have the opportunity to purchase better accoutrements. Our dinner for two was more expensive than we expected. It was $73 and with the added tip in the high eighties, putting our dinner at over $40 a person. Even though the food was interesting, I doubt if we will return again. The cost of the meal may have been acceptable if the experience was finished with better tables, chairs and quieter environment. The noise level was very high in this establishment. When we left, every table was full and there were people standing uncomfortably in the restaurant waiting for a table to sit at. We could not hear our waitress and had to ask her to repeat herself a number of times. She asked if we wanted bread with our meal and my husband agreed. She then offered some choices and the way she offered the bread, or naan, it sounded like it came along with the meal (like Italian bread at a pasta house.). Over time quality and consistency have gone down hill considerably. Used to be a great. Butter chicken in particular used to be a rich and well spiced dish with generous portion of chicken, a deep red - now it is light orange and sweet with some overcooked (to the point of dryness) chicken breast. Basil India seems to have reduced their menu offerings to just mainly Indian items - they had many Asian items that had been marked off as they mentioned they're changing up their menu a bit. We were totally OK with this since the food we did order was delicious! Our waitress had recommended the Chicken Lababdar as it has a tomato base and a nice amount of spice. The gravy was delicious and fresh, there were big chunks of chicken that were perfectly cooked! We have gotten Basil India for takeout a few times and really enjoyed it. The fan favorites, like the Tangra Style Chili Paneer and the Hakka Noodles are not overrated! The "naan" reminds me a bit more of a flaky Singaporean roti. It is SO good. And overall, the food is filling but not too heavy like some Indian and Thai food. It was a random selection for a group dinner in St. Louis while visiting for work. We ordered Samosas and Paneer chili for appetizer. They were both hot and spicy. Samosas were served with sweet chili sauce instead of the traditional tamarind chutney. It was a delicious combination. For entrees we ordered Thai green curry with chicken, Masaman curry with shrimp and Butter chicken. They all tasted good but were too rich. Perhaps too much coconut milk. All dishes came with rice. We also ordered Parathas but they clearly were store bought Malaysian parathas. Not Indian parathas. They did not have a good selection of breads like Naans and Authentic Indian parathas. We came here for lunch early in the week about a month ago and placed our name on the Yelp waitlist before arrival. When we got there only two tables were occupied in the dining room but the guy working the counter told us we needed to wait because we didn't have a reservation. I explained to him that we had put ourselves on the waitlist and he said he hadn't been checking that. He seemed very inconvenienced to have to accommodate us. We also asked him about how long lunch would take since we hadn't been there before and we had a meeting to get back to. He told us it "wouldn't take an hour or anything" but it did end up taking a hour and many of us had to leave and run back to our work place. The shining star of this meal was the food. I ordered the lunch special and my curry was flavorful and delicious. Their heat scale is intimidating because it goes from 0-20! I ordered a 10 and it was really hot actually. My coworkers who ordered 12 or 14 where really sweating. We also ordered naan which didn't come out until after our meal. It was really good but more helpful to come out with the meal. I would definitely go back for the food but the organization/timing needs a little improvement. read more

I have waited for 5 years for St Louis to have a decent Indochinese restaurant. Basil India is answer to my prayers and finally the dining scene in Stl is complete! Now, St Louis can taste authentic hakka noodles and tangra chilli chicken. Tangra is a style of cooking Indochinese from Calcutta. All the fried rice options looked so tempting, but we settled on Yang xou fried rice with shrimp, chicken and lamb. Last but not the least, Chicken in ginger and scallion sauce was the best dish of the day. The aroma of fresh ginger in a soy sauce base with the hint of fire of the wok is the most delicious taste ever. If you are new to Indochinese, do give it a shot. There are many Thai and Indian options on the menu which will have to wait for next time.. we did try butter chicken and naan( which is more like a lacha paratha) - just the best butter chicken in the world- must must try! We live in the area and are always looking for a good Indian food spot without having to drive 20+ minutes. This popped up within 10 minutes of our house, not sure how we missed it! My fiancé isn't huge on Indian takeout, so he was glad that they had some other options. He ended up with the pad Thai spicy - and it's SPICY. They don't lie. I got the paneer tikka masala and it was okay. It was definitely pretty spicy (which is how it should be made, it's my fault for being a baby), but other than the actual level of spiciness, it didn't feel like it had a ton of flavor. They also aren't very generous with their rice, a small container. Their samosas were bomb. Our biggest complaint was price, I expected a good size meal (like other local spots) for the price it was at, and both meals were in pretty small containers. When I picked the order up, for $45 it was not a lot, so that was disappointing. It was good, if we lived directly in the area, we would probably go again for convenience, but personally since it's still a 10 minutes drive, I probably won't go again. read more

I thoroughly enjoyed both meals, and the tikka masala had enough spiciness to make it more enjoyable. I should have bought an extra rice with my orders! It was that good. I have never personally eaten inside the restaurant since I ordered to-go, but the ambiance looks nice, and the interior is decorated well. It took about 25 minutes for my order to be ready for pick-up, which was a decent time given that I ordered a tikka masala and the samosa.
