I am usually am a pad Thai or red curry person (basic I know) but wanted to try something a little different. I ordered delivery and got khao soi and it might be my new favorite dish. The base was similar to red curry to me but the noodles & all the toppings make it way more flavorful! When you order online it comes as medium spice level. Drove out to the Grove to give this Thai spot at try. We love Sen downtown, & it is our go to, but we had been scouting out some of the other local favorites for Thai on Yelp, and this place had some impressive reviews. Parking was easily accessible on adjacent lots or on the street. The inside of the restaurant is modern and clean. It is an open concept, so you can see a portion of the kitchen from the seats. My party of 5 was seated immediately by a hostess who gave me the vibe that she neither loved or hated her job...she was just sort of there. It took 18 minutes for a server to show up at our table...By this time, I could have recited their menu! The party of 6 beside us finished their food, got their to go boxes, paid their tab, & chit chatted before we were even acknowledged. We were not the only ones who noticed that our party was being ignored/ overlooked because a lady in the party next to us (the party who had already paid) leaned over to me and said, I promise the food is worth the wait. Hence we stayed... When the waiter brought our water, we went on and ordered our appetizers. We asked if he would go on and take our entree orders. My son ordered pad Thai, one daughter drunken noodles, the other daughter fried rice, my husband and I fried rice and drunken noodles... The waiter then told us, we don't have drunken noodles, the noodles did not come in on the delivery order (I get it, not your fault), but we were confused because nothing was said about those dishes not being available when we sat down as well as when my daughter ordered drunken noodles (which come to find out he had written that part of the order down wrong)... My husband asked if they could just substitute a different type of noodles from one of the other noodle dishes into the drunken noodles, and the waiter said that the noodles in the drunken noodles were large and flat. My husband reiterated to the server that we knew that and asked the question again. The server gave the same response. I am not sure if his intent was to be condescending or if his comprehension was that poor, but with service like that, I have little faith in the quality of the food... By this time, things were beyond frustrating, so we got up and left. We ended up at Sen Thai and had a great meal. What a mouth watering adventure! I was visiting STL and had a local friend pick our restaurant. She knows I love Asian cuisine, like her, so she chose this authentic Thai spot. Issa, our server, was very knowledgeable with his recommendations. Everything we ordered was fantastic! The only thing I didn't really care for were the tiny dried shrimp in the papaya salad (just a personal preference). We had 3 appetizers: rolls, crab Rangoon and papaya salad. There were 4 of us and we ordered 5 entrees: 2 curries, pad Thai, and spicy thai basil fried rice. One of my favorite STL Thai restaurants! I've been here a few times with two people and also with larger groups. And they've been good at accommodating both group sizes. I believe you can call in advance for reservations so that definitely is helpful. There is street parking outside and a lot across the street which is great! My go to is always the pad Thai with shrimp or tofu. I appreciate having options as someone who does not eat Meat so that is great! I will definitely be back. The Thai Fried Rice has been there for me through all of my "twenty something" phases. First dates, finding out good news, break ups, catch ups with friends, hard days at work, solo dinner nights, and nights where I've been so exhausted I don't have energy to cook. The place is beautiful, I really enjoyed the look and set up of the space. The hand crafted cocktails were yummy, and hard to chose from. My friend and I wanted to try this nice Thai place. He got the tofu Thai rice and I got Pad Kee Maw. We shared some crab ragoons. The service was okay, but only because they were down people that day. But the workers were working their butts off so I commend them for that. So I think their service typically would be great! My dish was good, I personally don't like the red wine added to it. Traditionally that is not typical and I am use to it being spicy. But I devoured it. My friend said the tofu was great and his dish was perfect. Our drinks were good. A girls night out dinner on a Saturday, I was surprised this spot wasn't more busy! The place has plenty of space for large or small groups and there is outside seating for days with better weather. The three of us were sat in a booth and service was prompt. The server was knowledgeable about the menu and provided his recommendations of the Khao Soi and the Kua Kling, both we ordered. When our third guest was thinking of ordering the Four Kings of Thailand dish, he was able to direct her that the portion size would be generous, which is was in comparison to our other two dishes. Of the three, the Khao Soi was probably my favorite with a rich, spiced coconut broth and a delightful blend of textures from the chicken, noodles, and garnish. The Kua Kling was a close second with delicious notes of lemongrass in the paste. That dish was certainly the smallest portion of the three. Overall, will be back. I love Thai food. As soon as I heard about this Thai place I wanted to try it. The location is great. I love the atmosphere and modern simplicity of the restaurant. The service was good, no complaints. I ordered the Khao Soi. I've had this dish at another restaurant and loved it so I wanted to try it here. It was just as delicious. I think I prefer it at Chao Baan because it was not as spicy here. I got to choose my heat level, and medium was just right. I could also choose how I wanted the tofu cooked, I chose soft. I also ordered a glass of the Bernard Griffin riesling. Not my favorite riesling but it was good. The food is reasonably priced and the portions are just right. I got the Thai Red Curry with chicken and my friend got the spicy stir fried noodles, and it was all really good! The Thai Red Curry had a GREAT coconutty yet spiced flavor to it, the heat was intense, and it was super rich and creamy. It was also chock full of veggies and chicken. The stir fried noodles were soft and caramelized, with a nice little hit of flavor. Good if you're craving less of an intense taste. I absolutely love Chao Baan! If you're craving Thai, this restaurant is a must-try. I've eaten in the restaurant for dine-in and ordered for carry-out multiple times now. I will say that it sometimes seems like you get a larger portion of food if you dine-in. Regardless, the food is consistently fresh and delicious. I always order Pad See Ew, and I especially love the noodles. In my most recent dine-in experience, our food came out to the table so quickly. Very speedy service! Our server was unbelievably friendly and authentically enthusiastic. I could tell that he genuinely enjoys his work. I'll start by saying that Chao Baan is one of my favorite restaurants in town to order Pad Thai. The dish is served with the option of either chicken or tofu or you can elect to order it with pork (+1) or beef or shrimp (+4). Spice levels can be adjusted per order, and range from mild, medium, to hot. Each time I've ordered this dish, it's consistently met my expectations for quality and price per serving. With that being said, I do not recommend this restaurant for the dining experience. I've been on three separate occasions and each time the dining area has felt in need of a deep clean and the service has been below average. Visiting St. Louis with family and was told this was one of the best Thai places around here. I love Thai food and can get a lot of great options in Chicago. My expectations are a bit high. The restaurant has plenty of space and is modern and sleek. It wasn't crowded, so we were seated quickly. We did family style with the dishes so everyone could try things. No alcoholic drinks, but we ordered hot tea. Our waitress was friendly but was a little slow and took awhile to bring everything we needed. We started with the cucumber salad, spring rolls and potstickers. My favorite was probably the cucumbers. They were a vinegar base and had crunch/flavor. Spring rolls were second- the dipping sauce was really good. The rolls were crispy but a bit mushy on the inside. The potstickers were my least favorite as the filling inside was just ok. For our main dishes we got Pad Thai with chicken (mild), Beef Nam Tok (mild), Spicy Kee Mao Noodles with chicken (medium) and Massaman Curry with beef (hot). My favorite dish was hands down Spicy Kee Mao Noodles with chicken. It had great flavor with a kick. The Massaman Curry was my next favorite. The dishes we got in mild to me were more bland, so I was a bit disappointed. The Pad Thai is very average, so I wouldn't get it again. The Beef Nam Tok was similar. The for the Pad See Ew tofu was fried very dark and the sauce was very salty. The fried potstickers tasted pre-prepared and warmed up to serve. The place was pretty empty when we came in so the service was fast and the food came out quickly. It was a cute restaurant with lots of natural lighting so eating there felt refreshing and vibrant. We ordered Khao Soi, first time trying this dish. The coconut-infused broth, especially with the chicken, is flavorful and well-balanced. The interplay of crispy and soft noodles adds a nice texture, making each bite satisfying. The pickled mustard greens and shallots bring in a tangy kick that complements the richness of the broth, and a squeeze of lime ties it all together. We also ordered the Pad Thai, and that was a decent dish as well. We come from major food cities such as Houston and Chicago so Asian food over there is definitely overall better. Our Thai food dreams have once again been fulfilled! We lost our favorite local Thai restaurant spot to it's relocation about a year ago (if you're local to the Tower Grove area you know). We got Chao Baan for takeout last night! Our order was ready extremely fast and stayed warm! We got 3 apps and 2 entrees to share - the apps were all fantastic! We got crispy spring rolls, crab Rangoon, and cucumber salad. The spring rolls and crab Rangoon were perfect and everything you'd want from those 2 menu items! The cucumber salad was refreshing and light. It tasted different from your standard Chinese cucumber salad (no chili oil, but rather a vinegar based liquid?) The Spicy Kee Mao Noodles with Tofu wasn't spicy at all but had big chunks of noodles, tofu, and bell peppers and was delicious. The Pad Thai from here always hits and was fresh!
