Ambiance: Very nice, dark, cozy -- date night vibes. Service: Great! Polite, smiles, answered all our questions. We started with the Isaan hamachi. It was okay, but compared to Sado's version it just didn't hold up. The biggest issue was the aroma--it had a sour, almost "rotten milk" smell. I'm not sure if that was from the coconut milk reacting with the acidity of the dish and was intentional, but it really affected the overall experience. The flavor itself was decent, but smell plays such a big role in taste. Next was a white fish sashimi (I can't remember the name) served over a thin orange slice and topped with jalapeño. The flavor combination was really nice and refreshing, but the slices of fish were paper thin. At around $20, I expected a more substantial portion. The gyoza was solid. Nothing groundbreaking, but well-executed with great flavor, a beautiful crispy lace, and honestly one of the best-smelling dishes we ordered. The palm sugar ribs came highly recommended, so I was excited for them. Texture-wise they were excellent--crispy outside, juicy inside--but the sauce had an overpowering aroma that reminded both of us of wet dog. My guess is the fish sauce was a little heavy-handed. I've had plenty of dishes with fish sauce before and love the depth it adds, so I don't know if this was intentional or just an off night. The flavor itself was good, but the smell made it difficult to fully enjoy. (It was pungent in the worst way) The standout of the night was the Japanese eggplant. Absolutely incredible. Perfectly cooked, packed with flavor, and the chili crisp brought everything together. Easily a 10/10. For dessert, we had the mango custard coconut cake, which was also delicious. Favorite cocktail: the Re-Animator. Refreshing, citrus-forward, with just enough wasabi to give it a subtle kick. I've never had anything quite like it and would absolutely order it again. Overall, it wasn't the strongest first impression. There were definitely some highlights--the eggplant, dessert, and cocktail were all excellent--but if I'm spending this much on dinner, I'd probably choose Sado, where every visit has been consistently outstanding. That said, I'd still come back for that eggplant alone. This reads more like an honest dining journal than a takedown. First time at this restaurant. First thing I noticed was the beautiful ambiance and fresh smell of plants. The food was exquisite! We enjoyed sharing the lamb tartare, potstickers, Isaan himachi (WOW), shrimp toast and sake sashimi with King Salmon (next level!!!). Drinks were amazing and wine selection perfectly paired. The food is edible art. Texture, layers of flavor abound in each dish. My husband called the food "revelatory" because you read the ingredients on the menu and they are just words. The words do not convey the end product. For those who do not like sashimi - I understand. At other places, it has literally made me gag. But, I tried it here and holy moly is it good. In a menu of stand out dishes, I think the sashimi is at the very top. The service was wonderful- friendly, knowledgeable, attentive but not too attentive. Gratuity seemed to be included, but we tipped on top of that because the included gratuity was not nearly enough for service that good. Now it is noisy. That is what I did not like, but I have noise challenges. We asked if we could sit up front near the bar. They kindly accommodated us. It was late on a Thursday and the restaurant was full. Definitely make a reservation. There is an adjacent parking lot, but parking fills up quickly. It is evident why the owner has been a James Beard finalist - this is not your average great food. Everything about this place is top tier, from the service to the ambience to the food. My friend and I had dinner here on a Thursday and were greeted and seated immediately, the server politely explained the menu to my friend who hadn't been before and helped me select a cocktail. This is solely a review for happy hour! My friend and I stopped by on a Thursday early evening to try some items on their happy menu. We didn't make a reservation but were seated quickly at the bar. I've been to iNDO several times. It feels like a restaurant you'd expect in NYC, LA or SF, sleek and polished, you get the vibe. It's not a "book a flight to St. Louis for this" destination spot. You should try something quintessentially STL instead. But if you live here, it's worth trying. The staff appear to have been here for awhile which adds to the sense that they're building something solid, not just trendy. Regarding food, it's Asian fusion, and for the menu we had, specifically its Japanese technique layered with Southeast Asian and Korean-leaning flavors. More concretely it was sashimi + nori + rice kind of style. I'm Korean so banchan + nori + rice is our staple and home cooked meals. For that reason, the price wasn't justified but it's tasty. Our orders: Hirame Sashimi: flounder, leche de tigre, roasted grapes, crispy rice noodles (18) - not a flounder fan, but this was good! First time at INDO for Valentine's weekend and we will absolutely be back! These were some of the best plates I've had in the past year!! We had a reservation and were seated promptly. Our server was so helpful in explaining the menu and helping us pick a 5th dish to round out our experience. The dining area is dim and had great music. So perfect for a date night! We got a variety of plates, but the highlights for me were the sashimi dishes, especially the blue fin deluxe plate! This is the BEST restaurant that I've been to in STL so far!! First, the service was absolutely wonderful. Our server was super nice and knowledgeable about the menu and very attentive to our table. The food was purely amazing: - The Sake Sashimi was absolute chef's kiss (rate: 10/10). The fresh sashimi in the ginger mint sauce left us speechless, the salsa gave a fresh and fruity burst of flavor, and even the fried chips on top had a ton of flavor! - The Isaan Hamachi (rate: 9.5/10) was also a must! I first tried the candied garlic on top, and it was truly sweet with only a hint of garlic. The yellowtail was also super fresh, and the coconut sauce brought out even more flavor from the yellowtail (and masked any fishy taste)! - The Massachusetts Scallops (rate: 9.5/10) was one of the best scallops I've ever had. Topped with crab and combined with the pea puree, everything complemented each other so well. There were only two scallops, but they were large and super filling. - The Shrimp Toasts had layers and layers of flavor (rate: 9/10)! The shrimp was inside of the toast, creating a super umami flavor, and then the light and fruity topping and sauce, along with the thin slice of cucumber, truly made this a party in my mouth. - The Chili Garlic Noodles were super nutty and so good (rate: 8/10)! The noodles were slightly spicier than expected, but the spice was a quick burst of flavor, so the spice didn't overpower the dish at all. The noodles were mixed with vegetables and topped with a crunch - definitely make sure to mix before eating to get the different textures and flavors in each bite! We also got cocktails (Pretty in Pink & Sands in the Sun), and both were really yummy. Last, we got a dessert - homemade ice cream by the Sous Chef that day: soy ice cream with red bean! INdo was one of my favorite restaurants for several years. My husband and I ate here often and brought out of town guests regularly. I loved the food, the vibe and the service. However, the last few times I was there, it was very disappointing. The food is not nearly as good as it once was and the service is just bad. The servers are cold, disaffected, and slow. Unfortunately the newer addition off the back is super loud. I really miss the former outdoor setup which was warm and intimate. Our table of 5 ordered a lot of different dishes and they were all just ok. Nothing stood out. We were celebrating a birthday and it just felt chaotic and not celebratory. Best dish: isaan hamachi/yellowtail. The fish was very good with a good/pleasant texture, very complex/dynamic flavors, the sweetness of the candied garlic and the richness of the coconut naam pla. Next is the japanese eggplant. Also very good texture with a really nice umami flavor and slight spice/crunch from the chili crisp. Shrump toast is also really good as well too. There was a good balance of flavors, richness of the mango sweet chili cut through by the cucumber salad. The potatoes were also phenomenal; I think it was a specialty item that's not always on the menu. It tasted like potatoes bravas, but more Asian. Finally, the chili garlic noodles were just okay. The vibe is nice, calm, and intimate, but the space is on the smaller side, so reservations are highly recommended. Parking can also be a little tricky (especially with the construction). Then I came again for happy hour and tried: Prawn Chip & Dip - Great starter and highly recommended; the dip was delicious. Trash Gyoza - Still yummy, but I prefer the dinner-menu gyoza. Salmon Avocado Bowl - I know Indo is known for sharing plates, but this is something I'd happily eat all by myself. New years eve at indo was something out of a dream. I had no idea I was getting myself into a 10 course prix fixe menu, but it was one of the best meals I have ever had. I'll start with the service. Amanda was my server and she was awesome. Attentive, polite, and overall it was an absolute pleasure to be served by her. Continuously checking in to see if she could help improve the meal. The interior is beautiful. Elevated, elegant, regal. The space is calming, sleek, and perfect for any occasion. You enter to see a small corner bar with about 7 seats. Then there is a small corridor back to the main dining area. As aforementioned, it was 10 courses. I won't bore you with analyses of every course so I will hit the highlights. To preface, I love seafood, but uncooked seafood is not my preferred preparation. That being said, every cold fish dish was superb. The tuna was so rich yet delicate. The sauces, garnishes, and accompaniments all balanced and complemented the flavors beautifully. Things like a coconut curry, candied garlic, fried wonton strips all elevated the dishes. The old fashioned was great as was the clarified daiquiri. It was coconut and velvety. It went down so smooth. The balance was wonderful. There were 2 favorites by far for me: the wagyu and the king crab. The wagyu--as everybody always says--melted as it touched your tongue. The tiger sauce gave a subtle kick with a perfect sweetness to counteract the richness. The king crab was warm and doused in butter. What more could a human need? Indo, you absolutely out did yourself. The staff were amazing, the meal amazing, the ambience amazing. I had a follow-up visit with Indo and this time I took a friend with me. The service, quality of the food continued to live up the first impression it left me with. I had again ordered the shrimp toast and sake yaki. We shared the shrimp toast and they were amazed at the taste and flavors as it was not something they ever had before. The saki yaki was something I ordered again -- the salmon was lovely resting in a flavorful curry sauce on the bottom that drifts across all spectrum of flavors from light and sweet to just enough heat. Among the other bites we ordered and shared was the trash gyoza which we both agreed was so great that we had ordered another round. The Chirashi salmon and yellow tail was a delight, along with the yellow fin temaki, and hamachi temaki and avocado, each on their own was superb! The Isaan Hamachi with the yellowtail and candied garlic rested in a coconut naam which was absolutely magical that I ended up drinking it by the spoonful! Finally made it to Indo! There is only street parking but were walked over from where we were before, so we weren't impacted by searching for street parking. We were able to be seated right away and right by the bar. I started with the "Oh My Cha Cha Cha" (Omija berry infused soju, Suntory Toki, spiced Asian pear, Campari and lemon). I've been here a handful of times and each time, I've tried to order different things. I love all the different flavors and the dishes are just so creative. There is just nothing else like it (other than Sado- sister restaurant). My go-to's usually the shrimp toast, gyoza, the chili garlic noodles and the isaan hamachi. They used to have an outdoor patio that had heaters but now they have this cool glass greenhouse room that is appropriately temperature controlled. The Laarb I almost skipped on because I'm not a fan of lamb, I'm so glad I tried it, it ended up being my favorite bite of the night. Which is hard to compete with the isaan hamachi its out of this world. The laarb is award worthy, the way the flavor literally evolves in your mouth is insane. It starts with the sweet notes, then moves into all the herbs and what I'm assuming is shallot, then you're left with the fat flavor and nuttiness from the candied peanuts. I will be attempting to recreate this lol. Do not go to indo without trying the isaan hamachi and the laarb ‍ Kudos to the staff who is always so knowledgeable and explains each dish as they arrive and asks for dietary restrictions at the start. It was one scallop. 1.5 tablespoons for 24 dollars. And it tasted good, but not 24 dollars good. More like 11 dollars good. They're a bit pretentious. The vibe is "welcome to NYC." As someone from NYC, this place would not last a week in NYC. I feel a bit rude about using a cloth napkin to wipe my nose, I asked for a paper one. They told me to get tissues from the bathroom. Even NYC restaurants have paper napkins to offer you. We got 3 dishes for $134 dollars, and it's objectively not enough food to feed 1 person. This was our party of four's first visit to Indo. They were pretty busy, but a server did come around within a reasonable amount of time to take a drink order. I'm not much of a cocktail or wine person, but it did appear as though they had quite a list of selections in this department. A couple of the people at our table did get fancy cocktails, and they were very pleased with them. We sat towards the back of the restaurant, which was very nice. I noticed an outdoor patio area that was not open, but looked like it would be a lot of fun when the weather accommodates. This is not your West County "sushi "bar. You're not going to find 400 different rolls on the menu here. What they seem to have is some pretty sophisticated Japanese, mainly seafood, options. We did get some sashimi, which was excellent. We ordered the, what I think was Hamachi jaw. This was essentially the jaw of a fish with the most tender meat possible. You have to be willing to get your fingers into it a bit in order to extract the meat, but it was well worth it. There's a beef dish called the tiger something or other! While I cannot remember the name of this dish, I can remember that it was probably one of the best things we ordered. It was great. We got a wide variety of items and spent a lot of money. There were some things that I liked more than others, but nothing was bad. I think the salted, fried tofu was actually either number one or number two in terms of my favorites. One thing that did catch a soft guard was the added 20% gratuity. There were only four of us so it seemed odd. None of us paid tremendous attention to the menu and I'm not sure if there was anything on the menu that stated that a 20% gratuity would be added. The service was great and team oriented. All of the people that came to our table were extremely knowledgeable and friendly. I didn't care too much about the added tip because I was going to add 20% anyway, but some people might be put off by this. We had four people each of whom had one drink. We ordered several plates and the bill was just under $400 with tip. My suggestion would be to go to Indo and have a couple of plates and a drink. Food was fantastic, unique, and beautifully presented. Service was excellent with helpful recommendations for first-timers. We ate on the patio. Indo is one of the top restaurants in STL. Love the sashimi combinations. They are always changing but always a pleasant surprise of flavors. Ribs are amazing(and I'm not a big meat eater). This visit tried the happy hour cocktails and they were so delicious as well. I rarely re-visit a restaurant as there are so many places to try in the area but Indo remains on my yearly "revisit list". read more
