Well, somehow, this restaurant has gotten worse. I decided to give it one more chance before writing it off forever. The food is bad quality, I can find better Chinese food in the frozen section at Trader Joe's or at a cheap Chinese takeaway joint, where they advertise cheap food that's cheap quality. That leads to why I'm now giving this place a one star review. They are charging prices reflect good quality food, prices that were reasonable with the former owners because they actually did use high-quality ingredients. We had Rishi as our server, she was exceptionally amazing! We had two dinner combos with crab rangoon and egg drop soup. One was cashew chicken and one was empress chicken. They were both beyond delectable. If you have not had the empress chicken, I highly recommend it. It's similar to sesame chicken, but a bit tangier. The ambiance here is always amazing. This place is a step up from regular Chinese carryout. The restaurant was clean and the service was friendly. If you're going out for a sit-down Chinese meal, I'd recommend coming here. I really liked the entrees, and the hot and sour soup was great. There are so many options on the menu that I need to come back. I had a beef dish that was a little spicy, which I liked. Ordered carry out. The food was hot and came out right when I arrived. The potstickers which are apparently homemade were just way too doughy for me. Very thick and heavy with a good size pillow of pork inside. The flavor was ok. A bit more of a sausage consistency and flavor than other potstickers I have had. The hot and sour soup was not hot or sour, but it was sweet, which was odd. Was definitely missing the tang of hot and sour soup. Did not care for it. The "mini" vegetable egg rolls were great tho! We've been customers of this restaurant for decades, but that may change. The soft drinks yesterday were all crushed ice with very little soda so I asked for a refill. When I asked for the second refill I was told there was a limit of one refill per customer. When I questioned it she said that the manager/owner just set the rule recently because a prior customer asked for 10-11 refills. I agreed that that was excessive but pointed out that their choice to fill the glass entirely with crushed ice left very little room for the beverage. She ended up getting me another refill but again filled it to the top with crushed ice, resulting in very little to drink. The owner needs to decide if limiting customers to one refill is worth losing their business because I can go to any other restaurant in the area and not leave thirsty. read more

Lately this has been our go to place, lunch or dinner, dine-in or takeout, food is always delicious and plentiful. My go to dish is the General Tso's Chicken combo. The crab rangoons are always fresh and creamy. Since changing ownership the restaurant is more accessible for dine in, plus they enlarged the dinning facility. This place has been part of my lunch rotation for a long time, but today might be my last. Prior to this, I would've given this place a 4 star rating. The food was always great for the price. However, there has been an ownership change, and I fear that it is for the worst. Today I ordered one of two dishes I typically order. I ordered their hot braised chicken lunch combo with hot and sour soup. Well, the hot braised chicken was overly breaded (more like a sweet and sour preparation). Before, the chicken didn't have any breading and was so juicy and delicious. Now, it tasted like pre-frozen garbage. The soup was just awful. It was too thick as though it was loaded up with some sort of starch. It was so bad that I just threw it in the trash which was so disappointing because that used to be my favorite hot and sour soup from anywhere. I will say the rice preparation was good, but they no longer give you the same amount. The crab rangoon is no longer crabmeat, and the spring roll was about the same as before. Needless to say, the food is different and nowhere near as good. I was really looking forward to my meal, only to be completely let down once I got it back to my office. The new owner is making a huge mistake by trying to cheapen the food. This place has had a long term repeat customer base that in all likelihood will stop being patrons because of these changes. read more

It's good basic Chinese food. All the normal dishes. Everytime we have picked up to-go orders they have been well prepared and only one time has something missing but they did make it good. Check the hours because it seems like they aren't open some days. Other times when they are open, they don't answer the phone. I think it's a labor issue just like most places. Hunan Empress is a popular Chinese restaurant in the Four Seasons Shopping Center. They blend Beijing, Szechwan, Hunan, Mongolian, Shanghai and Cantonese cuisine together in very flavorful dishes. The food is high quality and very fresh. Everything is flavorful and spiced well. The restaurant is clean and bright. I prefer to dine in and then take my leftovers home. My favorites so far are the Hunan Chicken, General Tso's Chicken, and Kung Pao Chicken. They have great lunch specials. Hunan Empress does offer delivery. We've been going for many years, unfortunately, the last couple of times have been a bit disappointing. One of our orders was sizzing rice soup, however, the puffy rice for the soup was not heated up and the soup was not super hot, therefore no sizzle. While the main courses were tasty, they were cold when they came to the table. Also, the server forgot our tea. Diners drop $50 for a sit-down dinner yet during a 50-minute expensive meal, Chesterfield and Creve Coeur to-go patrons must parade between tables to collect and pay for their EXPENSIVE to-go order. I have supported Hunan Empress throughout covid bad times. They developed A HUGE carry out clientele during their bad times. Now some genius somehow decided that this screwball carry-out format was a good idea. Are you kidding me. You have dine in customers continuously exposed to guys in cut-offs and tennis shoes traipsing between their tables just to pick up an order places 45 minutes earlier. The new dining room is BEAUTIFUL! But this makes a mess of Empress investment in floor tile, decor, tables and seating. Who in the hell is running this place?!?!?! Little things matter. BIG THINGS ruin a beautiful quality restaurant... Especially when 500 feet down the strip mall is a truly stellar Asian restaurant.
