This is a great experience type of place. It is like the hibachi of ice cream shops. It is kind of like Cold Stone but not in 2008. The service is very friendly and you get unlimited toppings, which is definitely great. You really get to be involved in the experience of making the ice cream. Parking is difficult, as it always is in this area of Montclair. Also there is not too much seating inside the restaurant. If you are looking for something interactive and instagrammable, this is a good ice cream place. If you want to liesurely sit in a quiet place you can go across the street to Gelotti. read more

This is my first 5 star rating! Well worth it. I waited about 5 minutes before I ordered but the cashier made me well aware of the time I would wait, which I liked. I order dream team with teddy graham and oreo topping. Both the cashier and employee that made my ice cream were so friendly and the ice cream was AMAZING! They only have one location but they should open one in LA! read more

A treat after dinner for a group of us this past Saturday. A few in our group had been before, but it was my first time at Absolute Zero (and only my second rolled ice cream experience.) They informed us almost immediately that there was a 10-15 minute wait before they made our ice cream, which was fair considering how crowded it was. It was nice and appreciated for them to set expectations (something so simple, but really effective - especially when it's crowded.) I enjoyed what I ordered - the mint Oreo option, but felt underwhelmed in general. The ice cream was made with care and attention. Maybe rolled ice cream isn't my preferred consumption of ice cream :) If i'm back in the neighborhood and craving rolled ice cream, I would definitely come back to Absolute Zero. read more

The first time I tried Absolute Zero, I was amazed at how delicious it was. The second time, it kind of lost its allure, but it's still good regardless. This place definitely hits the spot after a meal in town! My favorites are the Hulk Smash (matcha green tea base) and Owl You Need is Coffee (Vietnamese coffee base). What I love about this rolled ice cream place is that you can put as many toppings as you want. Yes, that's right people, unlimited toppings. My favorite toppings to get are pockey, teddy grams, crushed oreo and whatever fruit they have. There is usually a wait during the typical peek hours, but that's what you expect when you go to dinner in Montclair. Most places have a lengthy wait. read more

What a fun way to eat ice cream!! Lots of combinations and lots of toppings to choose from. The staff is friendly and fast! Be prepared to wait but it's worth the experience. I went adventurous and had number 11-the purple yam with condensed coconut milk and it was delicious without being too sweet. My fiancé got the Oreo and his was super creamy and tasted of Oreo with only two being used! read more

Delicious! Plenty of flavors to choose from and tons of toppings to add at the end. The ice cream is rolled in front of you making it artistic and fun to watch. You feel like a little kid all over again watching in excitement. The place is small and gets crowded. They have seating inside and a small bench on the outside if you're lucky to grab it and the weather is nice. Expect to wait up to 30min for your ice cream, but totally worth the wait! read more

If you come at a good time (probably before dinner) and avoid the rush, this place is worth it. The texture or taste of the rolled ice cream does not differentiate it from other ice cream places. If you are, instead, looking for dessert with a unique experience, some interesting flavors, and fun toppings, then this place is for you. I had thai iced tea topped with condensed milk, nilla wafers, chocolate chips, and whipped cream. This was my first time trying this "rolled" style ice cream and it was "absolute"ly amazing! I ordered the strawberry shortcake (5/5) you can't go wrong with this combination. They make it right in front of you and it's a pretty neat process. I won't go much into it, but it's definitely a nice twist to your typical frozen ice cream. The toppings are a huge plus as well. There are tons of different combinations you can make from marshmallows on a stick, to little teddy-graham bears (that's what I got ;) ) The staff was well trained and super friendly, even on a busy night! Very interesting ice cream experience! You get to watch the ice cream take shape as the raw ingredients are mixed on a frozen surface in front of you. Mix-ins like Oreo are chopped and folded in, then the ice cream is scraped into rolls and more toppings are added. Very cool customized experience. I've never had rolled ice cream before so I've been wanting to come here for the longest time. I was hoping a cute boy would bring me here but whatever I went with my friends. ‍ My first choice was sold out (the ube), then my second was sold out (Thai tea), so I got "Owl You Need is Coffee," and it was extremely good. Watching them make it is extremely satisfying and the staff is nice as well. I think $7 + all the toppings you want is an decent deal. read more

So, based on the reviews from this place, and the fact that the ice cream is made in front of you and rolled, peaked an interest for me to try it. I invited my boyfriend to come with me and we came around peak time which was around 9 pm-ish, especially when the weather outside was really warm. We expected the place to be packed and sure enough, it was. When we entered the place, the guy at the front of the register greeted us and let us know that it would take about a 45 minute wait until we would get our ice cream. We nodded and then told him what we wanted and he asked for our names. Now, normally people who write down your name would just write it on how to sounds rather than actually try to spell it correctly, and I was surprised that he was patient and quick enough to get both of our names correctly. We paid about $14 for the both of us. After that, he said we could go outside and travel around for a bit and then come back to get our order. Time passed by, and my boyfriend and I went back to the place after about 30 min or so (just in case they called us sooner) and we managed to grab two seats in the front. Now, they weren't kidding that the wait is super long. I believe that's really the only con they have, but we understood that it was peak hour and it appears to be very popular. Once our names were called, I saw how the guy poured the ingredients in front of me and began to make the rolled ice cream; it was very interesting! I felt like a child just awed by the creation haha. Anyways, after he put the rolled ice cream in the cup, he asked for my toppings and he put it together in such a cute way! I thanked him and then waited until my boyfriend got his. We walked out and decided to try it. Amazing. The ice cream met my expectations! Soo good, and the spoon changes color based on the temperature! I swear, I felt like a kid again. I would definitely recommend this place, but make sure to come when it isn't as crowded, and to be patient! Service could be better. The guy who was taking our order asked me 3x how to spell my name and was in utter disbelief that any name could possibly start with an x. X-i-w-e-n. I usually tip and after processing my order that guy had the actual nerve to call me Helen. Hello? Was I playing mime the last few minutes? I came to absolute zero and tried rolled ice cream for the first time in my life and was not disappointed. I've been there 2 times the first I had the campfire one and this time I got the strawberry shortcake. Each time I eat there me and my wife just go through them like a bag of chips. We sit and talk and it's like muscle memory your hand just takes that spoon and dips right into the bowl over and over and over until it's gone. It's such a bittersweet feeling when you're done because you're left with so I got back and get more or call it a night. This place overall is great I can't wait for when they get more flavors. Oh also they have these neat spoons that turn blue when you pick up your ice cream. read more

Okay okay. I'm sure you're wondering why I gave this place ONLY 3 stars. It's only because, honestly, I've had better. And having had better doesn't make this bad at all! This is in comparison to Juicy Spot in NYC. To answer what you came to this review for: yes, you should try this ice cream; it's great stuff. Seriously. Now here goes the rest of my opinion: I think the biggest pro to this place is the wait time. But that's something that goes along with a trending dessert shop. If you have the time to go during the day on a weekday, you'll have a better shot at not having to spend 30 minutes waiting for your ice cream. I opted for the hulk ice cream which was green tea ice cream with strawberries chopped in. For toppings, I went with condensed milk, mochi, and pocky. I recently moved to Jersey and I don't drive yet so I had to get used to not being spoiled by having such easy access to tons of great food and dessert shops in NYC. This is a unique treat that usually gives the opportunity for its consumers to try something new without it seeming so scary (i.e. green tea ice cream, mochi, black sesame ice cream, etc). Next time I definitely want to try Dream Team or Camp and Chill. read more

This is a great ice cream place. I'm so glad that there is no need to drive to NYC anymore for Thai ice cream Rolls. I've been here 3 times already and I have never been disappointed. Lines may be long, depending on the hour. It's well worth the wait. My favorite ones are the Hulk smash (matcha with strawberries) rolled ice cream and the Don't Thai me down (Thai iced tea with coconut flakes) rolled ice cream. read more

This was our first time at Absolute Zero and trying Thai rolled ice cream. The place is small and to the point, with about dozen flavors/mixes and numerous toppings to finish it off. Today, the line was short, which from what we heard is rarely the case. We tried the "Me Want Cookie" which is a Oreo mix ice cream. We were able to see them make it which was great and cool to watch. The ice cream was pretty hard and took a while for it to get soft. However, the ice cream was great and we will return to try different flavors and toppings. read more

I recently went to Absolute Zero for the second time. The first time I went I can't remember what I got. When I went more recently I got the ube ice cream with condensed milk, whipped cream, mochi, and matcha pocky. It wasn't necessarily the best ice cream I have ever had, but it is a really unique experience. They prepare the ice cream in front of you and the presentation is really good. The first time I watched them make the ice cream roles was definitely more exciting than the second time, but my mom has gone three times and is still very excited by the show. Before you go, you should know that the wait may be long. I waited ten minutes and it is the end of December so I can't imagine how long the wait would be during the summer. Also parking can be tough as it always is in this area of Montclair without a parking permit. BASICALLY, PROS: unlimited toppings, spoons change color when cold, super instagrammable, punch cards available, very nice employees, relatively exciting/interactive experience. CONS: parking can be tough, potentially long wait, limited seating, texture of ice cream not as good as regular ice cream. read more

Petty good I've cream, even if it's a little gimmicky. It was pretty crowded when we went, so we waited for about 10 minutes. Once your name is called, the (insert name for someone who makes ice cream in front of you here) asks what kind of extras you want and proceeds to pour the ingredients on cold surface and makes what can only be described as an ice cream crepe. On this visit i tried the #12 which is failed ice cream mixed with brownie and added toppings of chocolate syrup condensed milk and raspberries. Such an explosion of flavor and a delicious treat. I entered my phone number but the promo didn't show up. After checking my phone, I realized it had just expired. I asked the attendant if, since it was for my birthday, they could honor it. She went to ask the manager. The manager came over and I explained the situation. She said no, her reasoning? "If I do it for you, I have to do it for everyone." That didn't sit right with me. How many people are really coming in every day asking to honor an expired birthday promo? For a small oversight, I'd have to wait another year to use it? It made me feel like my business didn't matter. We're talking about $5, not a free treat. I work in the financial/service industry, so I pay close attention to customer experience. This interaction said a lot: the attendant likely didn't have the authority, but the manager had the opportunity to create a positive moment and chose not to. Moments like that are where you either create a loyal customer or lose one over something small. Safe to say, this wasn't handled well. I left more disappointed than anything. I don't see myself coming back in the near future.
