Ham and egg, hot dog bun
    Regina W.

If I am in SF Chinatown, I usually swing by AA bakery. Quick in and out service. My favorites are the egg tart, ham and egg bun, and hot dog bun. Prices are good and food is fresh!

I stumbled upon AA Bakery while wandering around Chinatown and decided to pick up one of their classic egg tarts. I didn't end up eating it until a couple of hours later when I was back at my hotel, and it still hit the spot. The flaky crust and smooth egg custard held up well, and it was satisfying treat after a day of exploring. Another thing I noticed was the lack of a line, which was a nice change from another hyped-up spot nearby and open whenever they feel like it. AA was filled with local aunties and uncles picking up their fresh baked goods, which is a good sign.

It's pretty flakey like some in SF on my social media feed

Chinese New Year has arrived in San Francisco and it's time to get our good fortunes in order. After having long noodles or dumplings for good luck you can also enjoy some dessert. On the start of the Lunar New Year some places are closed in observation on Chinese New Year. There is a place on Stockton street which has all the essentials for a good dessert to start or end the Chinese New Year. You can get already prepared desserts or customized cakes for any event . This place is called AA Bakery & Cafe. On a Chinese New Year stroll on Stockton street in San Francisco Chinatown I landed at AA Bakery & Cafe. Inside there are lots of bake goods available. I wanted to try their egg tart. It was not too sweet and it was tasty but a bit flakey like some in SF. They also have inside some Japanese cheesecake along with sweet mango desserts and cakes with a cherry on top. They also have savory treats like corn buns and traditional Mexican buns. This a great place for all to enjoy some delicious treats for Chinese New Year's. They have sweet treats with "strawberry" and some topped with a "cherry "and others savory treats like ham and cheese they "carry"for Chinese New Year's which starts in the middle of "February" Enjoy your "8 meal course" which includes duck and noodles for good luck in the Lunar year because it's the main "source "for the year of the "Fire Horse" to ride it out and stay on "course"

Two tarts and tea. Was charged an extra $5 for eating in??
    Elaina R.

They charged my friend an additional $5 to her $7 order of tea and 2 tarts. What she thought would cost $7 was $12 and she didn't notice until after she had tapped her card and paid. When she questioned this $5 increase, she was YELLED at and told it was the "standard charge" for eating in + tip. There was no signage or verbal notification of this supposed "standard charge". She was not given the food on a plate or anything. Tarts were in a plastic bag. Tea was in paper cup. Will not be coming back here!

I grew up in Chinatown; some things change, and some things stay the same. Whenever I am in Chinatown, I always buy buns and egg tarts from AA Bakery. The buns have always been consistent, and the staff is always friendly. From time to time, I also find an open seat to sit and enjoy the Chinatown vibe, watching seniors talk about the old days while sipping coffee with their friends. Even regulars coming in to buy buns can be recognized by their interactions with the staff.

Randomly came across AA Bakery during a Saturday morning Chinatown run. We were hitting a few of our usual spots when I noticed AA Bakery tucked along Stockton Street. Despite the weekend rush, there was barely a line -- a pleasant surprise given how packed Chinatown usually gets. Inside, trays of assorted Cantonese buns, cookies, pastries, and cakes were all neatly lined up and ready to go. - Dan Tat (Egg Tart) -- silky, custardy center with a light jiggle; crust was flaky though slightly thick, still comforting and classic. - Rousong Bao (Pork Floss Bun) -- the pork floss almost melts into the bun like a glaze, adding a subtle sweetness that balances perfectly with the salty, savory floss. In the back, a few Cantonese aunties and uncles were gathered around, playing mahjong and sipping Hong Kong milk tea -- almost straight out of a scene from Interior Chinatown. Overall, AA Bakery is a charming and underrated gem among the many bakeries and dim sum takeout spots in SF Chinatown. I'll be back to try more of their baos and HK-style milk tea.

AA has become my go-to spot for pineapple buns because of the convenient location in Chinatown, efficient service, and good quality. Every time I go, The line moves quickly, and I don't have to wait that long to get the goods. The buns are super cheap at just $1.50 each, and the credit card minimum spend is only $5, which is the lowest I've seen. The buns retain their freshness too even if left in the small plastic bags for a day or two at room temperature. I do wish the serving bags were a bit bigger or that they provided a takeout bag with handles, but it's better for the environment that they don't, and it's on me to be prepared and bring a tote next time.

They have a line but it goes by very quickly. I got an egg tart and it was alright. The tart came out very hot like top was mega cooked but inside a bit unsettled like not fully cooked yet. The crust was very flakey and dense.

This is a tiny little Asian bakery. The street it's on is super busy and has absolutely no parking. Pretty common problem for sf, especially Chinatown. Insane quality baked pork buns. The bun is fluffy yet chewy. The pork filling is rich, salty and sweet. Their mango pudding is super creamy and custard like. There's always 2-3 women loading up goodies into their pink to go donut boxes. I try to stop every time I'm in sf. I love this place!

That egg tart was delicious. Soft, tasty. I'm probably going to go here from now on for my egg tart and it was HUGE!!! Can't be that. Lady in the back counter was so sweet how could I not go back!

I arrived at the bakery before it opened on a weekend morning, and there were already a couple of brave souls in line. I waited only about 25 minutes for the bakery to open, and once doors officially opened to customers, I was in and out in no time with my fresh pastries in hand. I enjoyed my almond croissant as soon as I got back home, and now I fully understand why Arsicault is at the top of everyone's SF bakery list. The almond croissant was still warm, the inside struck the perfect balance between fluffy and gooey (from the almond paste), and the exterior was nicely crisped. The almond filling is super rich and decadent yet not overly sweet. I also noticed - and appreciate - how Arsicault's almond croissant doesn't include toasted almonds on top, since these can often get over-baked and taste bitter. I definitely agree this is one of the best pastries in SF now.

I definitely feel like the team implementing the 7:45AM start time to line up has helped a lot. Not only is it better for the neighbors, but it also makes the whole experience feel a lot less chaotic compared to showing up super early and scrambling to get in line. Everything feels much calmer and organized now. As for the pastries: To be honest, it really depends on what you like. I'm one that gravitates towards pretty much anything with meat and chocolate. Because of that, most of their savory/meaty and creamy pastries are always a must for me. They're super flaky, flavorful and decadent. You can really tell how much time and effort they put into making everything as high quality as possible, especially since you can see them making everything from the window while waiting in line. All in all, I think there's been a lot of improvement over the past year with some trial and error. Their pastries have always been delicious and I personally think it's worth the wait. I recommend getting to the area closer to 7:45AM so you have a better chance of being towards the front of the line. If not, it's still better to come before opening, I just wouldn't recommend getting there right before they open. By then it's not guaranteed that you'll get everything you want since they do run out depending on how many people are there.

We had the drinks right away and I enjoyed their honeycomb toffee latte ($8.25) while my husband ordered a flavored lemonade. The Honeycomb latte wasn't overly sweet and the honeycomb on top was a nice treat. The honeycomb itself was sweet and crunchy and you can either pick it out and eat it or stir it into your drink and let it melt. The lemonade my husband ordered was on the sweeter side, but was super refreshing for summer. If you like sweet you'll like this- if you prefer less sweet or tart it may not be for you. The chocolate chip cookie had dark chocolate and was really rich and satisfying.
