Eye catching pot pies and pie slices! When I spotted these pot pies at the Granville market I knew I had to try one! They have a few vegetarian items- I tried the mushroom pot pie. They also had a veggie meat and cheese pie and Mac and cheese pie. Inside the pot pie it was basically a cream of mushroom soup nothing special. The lemon meringue pie was also underwhelming. In total it was ~20$ for the pot pie and the lemon meringue pie slice. The instagram photo are unfortunately better than the food actually is. There is seating outside the Granville market area where you sit and eat with nice views of the water and boats passing through. read more

The pot pies looked amazing! But unfortunately, the one we ordered was not as amazing as it looked. We ordered the Beef Stew pot pie. While the service was great, the Pot Pie was served in a to-go cup and wasn't even hot when we got it. We aren't ones to complain so we didn't say anything. But instead of it being piping hot, the inside of the pot pie was goopy from being cooled down. And to top it off, there were only a few pieces of beef. Hopefully when we go back to Vancouver one day, we'll give this place another try to see if they will be any better. Until next time... read more

A La Mode is one of the "must-try"s in Granville Island. They have a variety of menu, but they are most famous for the pot pie soup. I had the Clam Chowder Pot Pie. The soup was delicious and warm. The flavour was just right - not too salty nor too watery. The pie was crispy, fresh, and you should try it with/without soup. There are plenty of clams within the soup, and you'll have some clams in every spoonful you take. I'd like to try different soups next time. It really warms you up on a cold day. The pot pies are not big meals, so it's great for breakfast/lunch or afternoon snack. The only thing is that it's a bit pricey - came to $13.50 with tax. Pot pies galore! If you are in the mood for pot pies (who isnt?!), this is a place to come! They have big ones, small ones, fat ones, skinny ones...and in almost every flavor imaginable in the format of a pot pie. French onion, beef stew, clam chowder, and the stock fav...chicken pot pie. They all look amazing, they have uncooked ones and then you can order hot ones to eat there. My friend and I were so overwhelmed we kind of wanted to have one of each but we both settled on the chicken pot pie to go. It's so cute as it comes in a little to-go container with the pot pie flaky crust on top and a little tiny salad. And even though there's a long line, not only is it worth the wait, but it goes rather quickly. And yes, the pot pie was amazing! And a salad was pretty dang good too. I didn't take pictures because we were eating outside and the seagulls were attacking people if they even for a remote second stopped eating. But needless to say, it was amazing, and you have to try this place! I only wish I could have brought some of these home to California. We got the Salmon Chowder and Raspberry Rhubarb Pie. The Salmon Chowder was very delicious - chunks of salmon in a perfectly thick chowder inside a flaky pie crust. The Raspberry Rhubarb pie was a little too tart for our liking, but with a scoop of vanilla ice cream I know it would have been perfect (so I guess I'll have to bring some ice cream with me the next time I come HAHA). It looks so much better than it tasted. First, wait in the line that moves rather efficiently and order your dishes. The main pot pies come with a side salad. But it lacked flavor, seasoning and was a real disappointment. Honestly, this was the worst thing I ate at Granville Market and spent time reading reviews to get some culinary redemption from the punishment. My kid had the Clam Chowder. It went down well and kept on going as he got sick later in the day while we were traveling home. I didn't try it. The Chicken Pot pie was more soupy in consistency, thin soup that is. The Shepherd'd pie still didn't have flavor after adding lots of salt and pepper. The Beef Roll was ok but nothing to write home about. The Quiche Lorraine was actually the best thing we ordered from there, but by then the disappointment had racked up lots of points that I didn't bother trying their sweet pies. Everything you can think of they probably have it. --CHICKEN POT PIE (3.5/5) - We probably are use to the pot pies with more veggies in them, but inside seemed like it only had chunks of cubed chicken and mushroom. Then I overheard the dad of family who sat at my table said it appeared the establishment had changed the recipe and added more water. That affirmed what I felt was right, but other than that it was still edible and I finished it since that was my lunch. Milk tea was average. Even though I don't live in the area, I hope they reformulate their chowder so that patrons can keep coming back. The pot pies were about $12 each, which were slightly pricier than most soups at restaurants, but I was willing to pay a bit extra for the puff pastry. They ran out of clam chowder when we ordered so we agreed to pay for it first then redeem it with our receipt 20 minutes later. The wait was a bit like a blessing in disguise as the soup tasted amazing freshly out the oven. I liked the spices they use for the soup, how creamy it was, and that it contained a good amount of clams in it. The puff pastry was definitely the best, as it was so satisfying breaking the pastry and dipping it in the soup. I always wanted to try the puff pastry soups they served, as I saw how popular it was and how delicious it looked whenever I passed by. Finally, I got the chance and this was my first time at A La Mode and in fact... the first time in a long time eating soup with puff pastry! We ordered the clam chowder pot pie with puff pastry and were told to come back after 10 minutes, as they just ran out and were baking/heating up a new batch. I didn't mind, as this meant my soup would be fresh and hot! There is always a short line (less than 5 minute wait), as it is one of the more popular stalls among the other options. The pie crust is pretty killer. That is where my 4 star rating comes from. Bought a whole pecan pie. The crust was great, again. The pecans were good and there was enough of it in there. The filler was a little more gelatinous than I usually like but I enjoyed the pie a lot. I also had the chicken pot pie. The pie crust was the centerpiece. So good. The soup was good. The chicken in the soup was unexceptional, so I didn't eat it. It was decent and I would have eaten it otherwise, but I'm consuming all these calories from the pie crust! I came here on a Saturday just before they were closing, and I got a slice of raspberry rhubarb pie and a mini clam chowder with puff pastry on top. It was part of a combo so I also had a lemon iced tea with it. I really liked the flavour of the clam chowder, and the puff pastry was good to dip in the chowder as well. The chowder was full of clams as well as bacon. The raspberry rhubarb pie had a very flaky pie crust, but the filling was too tart for my liking. I would love to try the pie in another flavor, like an apple pie or pumpkin pie. Although I live basically walking distance to Granville Island I don't go that often unless there is something specific I need. Also, I have limited patience for massive crowds which obviously and sadly aren't a problem. I don't usually eat in the market and A La Mode historically has always had a lineup and I'm not that patient! It was Tuesday morning and I was at the market for some other things so thought no time like the present. The COVID protocols are as good as anywhere I suppose but it's hard to police people from walking the wrong way etc., though everyone was wearing a mask and there is security. Pies are definitely a comfort food whether savoury or sweet and there is a significant selection of both. I generally prefer savoury and asked what they recommended and the answer was beef. They have more than one beef pie and I later deduced it was beef stew. I got it to go as there is extremely limited seating and it was still morning and I'd barely finished breakfast an hour ago. It was well packed in a cardboard type tray which kept the integrity of the great looking puff pastry. I asked about reheating instructions and was simply told to put it in the microwave. My microwave gets used a lot less frequently than my exercise equipment so... I also got a black coffee because it's Vancouver winter and cold and wet. Plain black coffee - solid, nothing spectacular. Mid evening it was time to incorporate the pie into dinner. I debated heating it in the oven but wasn't sure how it would hold up - it's basically in a cardboard cup. So I closed my eyes and figured out how to use the microwave after I dusted and cleaned it. I just pushed a button so I can't tell you what setting I used. Your mileage may vary! When it felt like it was done I took it out and let it rest a few minutes. I was a bit concerned the pastry may be negatively impacted by the microwave but I was wrong. This is delicate puff pastry nicely browned and retained its crispness. Inside was more of a beef stew than a pie. It had some good viscosity though and the seasonings were spot on. Very well flavoured, right amount of salt and pepper for me as well. It was primarily chunks of beef and mushrooms. The beef was perfectly cooked and tender while retaining a good texture. Absolutely enjoyed eating all of it. I'm picky about pies and I've spent years getting my homemade ones to where I like them and I can tell you it's a lot of work! It's a bit on the pricier side with most savoury pies around $12-$14 for an individual hearty whole pie. However, the ingredients are clearly top quality and these are a lot of labour and it's Granville Island. I may try one of their seafood ones next! read more

Stopped by this place on a Sunday afternoon for a Yelp Elite perks sampler. I've been to this place many times prior and thought their savoury pies were amazing (particularly their stew or chowder ones). This sampler was their clam chowder and a mini apple pie. I also got a coffee with cream, which was smooth. The pie crust here is immaculate. Very crispy and just cooked well enough so that it's flaky but not dry. The chowder was very good and the apple pie was not too sweet and not too tart. Perfect comfort food for a rainy day! Full size pies are usually served in a bowl which you take back after use. Seating is very limited due to covid in the market so you might need to sit outside if there are no seats available indoors. read more

The beef and chicken were just great. Mushroom was different (creamy with tomatoes) but pretty solid as well. The pastry part was very good indeed and I wish there was more. The sheppard's pie was terrible with the mashed potatoes lacking any flavor and the beef being extremely bland. It needed way more salt and seasoning, and was priced the same as the clam chowder which is ridiculous. This is probably one of my favorite clam chowder sit down. We had two orders, the clam chowder and salmon chowder.Chowder is completely different from Seattle's Pike Place Chowder. If you're looking for creamy rich clam chowder, it might not be your spot. With A La Mode clam chowder, it's less creamy, with a very thin texture but it has a lot of flavor! The salmon chowder was my personal fav! It was slightly creamier than the clam chowder, but still very soupy. A bit salty, but still enjoyable! There was huge salmon chunks. It was very filling and satisfying. It was just enough food to have some dessert afterwards! There will be a wait for your chowder! Food would be 3/5 (that we tried) was good and warm but nothing amazing and memorable. It definitely looked way better than it tasted. We got chicken pot pies because that's the only type of pot pie available out of the 6 or 7 flavors which was DISAPPOINTING. The one lady forgot my husband's tart (he was upset about this a lot). We tried asking for boba and lady completely ignored us. We just let it go 'cause we were so hungry and we just wanted out food. They were such in a rush , customer service was VERY MUCH LACKING. You can buy unbaked pies and take them home but I have no input with that since we did not try that. Hungry and wanna eat now? I took my lil sister to A la Mode for Yelp Elite sampler a while back. We went there on a Saturday I believe. This little gem is located inside the Granville island market. They make various pies, baked goods, pot pies etc. When I got there they gave me a mini berry pie, mini pot pie, and a small coffee complimentary. The pies were both delicious! However, I liked the pot pie better than the berry one. I would recommend you to try this place out but try not to drive because the parking situation is a nightmare . The only reason I gave them 4 stars and not 5 is because of their lackluster service. The lady who was minding the cash register seemed bothered by my order.
