cute little shaved ice dessert spot in the west end, tucked in at 907 denman street. it's bright and airy inside, with a clean setup, and a few casual tables if you want to sit and cool off for a bit. everything feels relaxed and low key, and has been quite busy with line ups, depending on when you visit. they specialize in bingsu/kakigori, and the menu is full of tempting shaved ice options i'll have to come back for. this time, i ordered the real watermelon slush, went sugar free, which sounded like a good idea at the time. it was super light, icy, and naturally sweet, but i probably should've just gotten it with regular sugar. it's served in a tall cup, vibrantly red and frosty, with a thin paper lid stretched across the top (which i had difficulty puncturing a hole through with the thin straw, lol), the drink was simple, refreshing, and very summery. overall, not bad for a health conscious choice, but next time i'll go all in. looking forward to trying their proper shaved ice desserts when i return. read more

We were craving a cool, refreshing dessert on this warm BC Day, so we walked here from Morton Park. The place already had a few customers seated, with a few more infront of us, but my party of 8 was still able to get seats at a couple of tables. Service was quick and friendly. The washroom was also decently clean after what was surely a long, busy day - after all, it was BC Day near the beach. We got the Tiramisu Bingsu (available for a limited time); the Strawberry Tanghulu (Summer item). The strawberries were fresh and not too sweet. The Bingsu was delicious - good flavor, not too sweet. The ice was a nice fine texture, and the ice was proportioned well with the flavor. Some places seem to only have flavor at the top then you're left with just ice towards the bottom of your bowl. I recently had really good bingsu elsewhere, so unfortunately the bingsu here paled in comparison. My friend and I got the strawberry cheesecake bingsu in the snack size to share, but we were confused because we could not find any cheesecake in the bingsu. The strawberry pieces were also cubed/diced and seemed a bit yellow and pale. The bingsu was served with heavy whipped cream and sweet strawberry syrup, which overpowered the shaved milk. My partner and I got the mango bingsu to share. It was really good, but too big for us! I like that Winter Bear also has a snack-size option, but I forgot about it this time lol. Lots of mango and a scoop of ice cream too. They also have some sort of flake cereal inside to give it a little texture, which is really welcome. The ratio of toppings and shaved milk ice is really balanced. The bingsu is really good here. Service is really good and inside the shop is very spacious and modern. Every ingredient that goes into the bingsoo is amazing, including the ice cream, which is creamier and smoother than I've had anywhere else in Vancouver. I find it mind boggling that Rain or Shine often has a line out the door, whereas this place has been mostly empty every time I've stopped by. Maybe people don't know what bingsoo is and are lumping it in with Asian desserts like mooncake and haw flakes? I took a friend here and she said that, based on her experience, she's re-evaluating her opinion on Asian desserts. I came here one evening with a friend and it was pretty fun! The inside of the cafe isn't huge but there's definitely multiple tables for you to come with your friends. They had so many fun bingsoo flavors, but we decided to get the classic matcha bingsoo. The girl working at the counter was super sweet and didn't take long to make our bingsoo considering that she was the only one working at the time. When it came out, it was SO big and we poured condensed milk on top (I recommend not using all of it at first as it might just flow off and onto the tray). The bingsoo itself was very light and delicious. It didn't stand out in anyway compared to other bingsoo spots, however, it was still pretty good! Wouldn't go out of my way for this spot, but if I was in the area I would love to come back! read more

This is my favourite shaved ice spot in Vancouver! I came here multiple times within a week. I've tried the mango cheesecake bingsu and the banana cream pie bingsu. The mango cheesecake bingsu is so good. I can literally eat this everyday and won't get sick of it. At first I thought there was too little mango but as I keep digging through the bingsu, there were cheesecake bits as well as some mango chunks. It was actually a perfect amount. The ice cream is vanilla and it matched perfectly with the shaved ice. There were also condense milk to pour over. I think the first layer you don't really need the condense milk, but it definitely made the flavour taste consistent when you pour it halfway. The shaved ice is milky rather than just frozen ice and I think that's a nice touch. Near the end there is frosted flake cereal. That was so surprising for me and I didn't expect it. It's pretty good since it adds a nice texture. And even when the shaved ice melts, the milk goes well with the cereal. I also wanted to try the strawberry cheesecake bingsu but they were sold out of the syrup unfortunately. I tried the banana cream pie bingsu instead and added a whipping cream on the side. The banana cream pie bingsu is delicious too! It's somewhat similar to the mango cheesecake bingsu but I think the whipped cream enhanced the flavour. Overall, I really recommend this spot! The shaved ice are a bit pricey, but the flavours and texture was amazing! Every bite of the shaved ice is interesting and I don't get sick of it! read more

"ONE ICED TIRAMISU PLEASE" @winterbearbc serves some of the most unique Korean style shaved ice in Vancouver, and is arguably one of the most underrated dessert spots in Downtown. Their bingsu base is so fluffy, light, and creamy. And you even have to option to build your own custom bowl. We opted for their new Tiramisu Bingsu, as well as their Banana Cream Bingsu because these are flavours you don't typically find at most Korean cafes. And let me tell you, they were so good we polished off both bowls and still wanted more. The Tiramisu flavour came with an actual piece of Tiramisu on top of the mountain of fluffy shaved ice. We were also pleased to find more lady fingers and espresso layered throughout the ice, as well as crunchy cornflakes at the bottom of the bowl. The espresso flavour was prominent, but not overpowering, and the bingsu as a whole was not too sweet even with the condensed milk poured overtop. The Banana Cream flavour was a real surprise to us because we've never seen this flavour anywhere else. We're so happy that we decided to pull the trigger and try this one because it was literally perfect. The fragrant, sweet caramel flavours from the banana, paired with the thick whipped cream was a match made in heaven. We also unlocked a new flavour by eating the tiramisu with the banana--which was literally a life changing experience in itself. Winterbear also makes the viral Tanghulus in-store now, and they are definitely worth the hype. The hard sugar shell was so crunchy, it was addicting to eat. My personal favourite was the strawberry tanghulu because it had some tartness from the strawberry that helped to balance out the sugar. I'd definitely recommend Winterbear to anyone that's looking for an awesome bowl of Korean shaved ice. This cafe is also independently owned and deserves much more hype, so go and show them some love if you guys are ever craving a cold treat! We went a little late but they sold out the mango bingsu already, so we ordered strawberry cheesecake bingsu, OH MY GOD it was so delicious, the cheese cream ln the side; the milky shaved ice and the corn flakes on the bottoms, it's just layers and layers of flavors, every thing was amazing. An amazing place for bingsu in the west end! Because we were going for dinner late, we only got the mini size but it blew us away. I got the strawberry and my friend got the mango and I thought the fruit to ice ratio was just right and the fruits were quite fresh (not frozen like some of the other places that I've tried before). The bingsu was pretty solid though a tad pricy for its size. My group and I got the regular mango bingsu and the matcha strawberry bingsu. Each bingsu comes with ice cream, one topping, the shaved ice, and cereal at the bottom when the ice melts. The store itself only has like 5 tables so it's a little difficult to get seats for larger groups. Also, there's only a few workers so the service is a little slow. read more

My friend and I were looking for some bubble tea on a weeknight. We came across this place and saw a picture of amazing looking fresh strawberry bubble tea and fresh mango bubble tea for only $6.70 each. In the photo, the drink was covered in fresh fruit top and bottom of the drink. We thought "wow this looks amazing" and didn't hesitate to try. Should have known it was too good a deal to be true. We were SO disappointed when we got our bubble teas. Not only did the drinks look nothing like the photos but it tasted so bad.... It tasted awful and was simply ice with syrup poured in. There was not a single piece or inkling of fresh fruit at all. This was the WORSE bubble tea we have ever had in all my years living in Vancouver. We have had alot of bubble tea and this is by far the worse ever. Oh it was so gross! After spending close to $20 with 15% tip, I was thinking, this is so not worth it. I even mentioned to the clerk that I was not satisfied and all she said was that the fresh fruit got blended up..., yeah I don't think so. Does she think we're stupid? Poor service overall. I totally do not recommend this place. False advertising and poor quality overall. They should not say fresh fruit if there is no fresh fruit. I am nominating this place as having the worse bubble tea ever. Never again! Zero stars.... read more
