Unfortunately they ran out of Salmon Chowder but I ended up getting Clam chowder pot pie and it was delicious. If you are planning to eat this, make sure this is the first thing you eat in the market because it is so heavy and filling that you wont be able to finish it if you already ate something else before this. It is a must try. The flaky pastry, the creamy chowder and a nice view of the water in a bustling market is quintessential for any Vancouver tourist. There was a long line on a Sunday but it moved quickly since the service was fast.
Delicious and a must try. We got the salmon chowder and it was so flavorful and creamy with plenty of meat. The puff pastry was perfectly flaky. Pro tip--grab a bagel from Siegels and use it to dip in the chowder once you're done with the puff pastry part. 10/10 would recommend.
We came back for the clam chowders and it hit like three years ago. The clam chowder was creamy and salty, with small chunks of potatoes and clams. The puff pastry on top was nice and flaky but at the bottom was more buttery and was delicious when you soak it in the soup. Fast service! I am drooling thinking about it.
Located near the Market Grill, this spot had a pretty long line when we visited. We ordered the clam chowder and the mac & cheese pie. The clam chowder came out quickly, while the mac & cheese pie took a bit longer. The clam chowder was definitely the highlight. It was creamy, loaded with clams, but the real standout was the buttery, flaky crust. It was so good. Unfortunately, the mac & cheese pie was disappointing. It was dry, bland, and lacked the creamy, cheesy flavor I was hoping for. Overall, I'd come back for the clam chowder, but I'd skip the mac & cheese pie.
We only had the clam chowder because they ran out of many things when we got there. It tasted fresh, even the crust was delicious. Good for sharing if you're in the food market trying different things.
The clam chowder puff pot pie was so good! Never had anything like it before. I wish there was more clam in it, but loved the flaky pastry crust. Stabbing it with a spoon and seeing the hot, steamy calm chowder come up with the spoon was glorious. Love how the pastry crust just melted in the soup and added that buttery taste to it. My friend and I inhaled this in minutes.
This place is amazing!!! Nestled in the far back corner of the market, you have to either be ready to wander to the depths or be ready to efficiently elbow your way straight there but it's so worth it. All their "pies" look delish & we tried the clam chowder pie and it was sooooo good!!! The puff pastry had an amazing flavor and the chowder was fantastic. Seating is first come inside (or there's outside too). So so yummy!!
Service was quick and attentive from the counter. Pie crust was flaky and crispy, stew was nicely cooked through,rich and smelled beefy. Mocha was alright. On par with a Starbucks mocha. Total was 26.00 for both items A bit on the pricier side but you are paying for the Granville island vibe and scenery....
Definitely my favorite bite of the day at Granville Public Market! It's located closest to the entrance by the Aquabus so you can have a great view of the water with your choice of a sweet or savory pie (why not both?) I ordered the clam chowder pot pie ($17.64 CAD) which were selling like hot cakes. In fact the person in front of me ordered the last one on display, so I had to wait for another fresh batch out the oven, which only took about 5-10 minutes. The clam chowder was wonderful, creamy with a distinct oceanic savoriness and chock full of baby clams and potatoes. I have to admit, this was one of the best clam chowders I've ever had, and I've had many from Neptune Oyster to Pike Place Chowder. The golden-brown layer of puff pastry on top was flaky perfection and the cherry on top. I'd really like to return to try their other pot pies, and perhaps a sweet one as well (why not?).
We ordered the turkey and cheese croissant, disappointed when we noticed the lettuce was unwashed and still had dirt on it. We then noticed a hair in the lettuce! When they remade the croissant for us there was still more dirt and a fly on the lettuce. We also ordered the shepherds pie, but for the price and size it wasn't worth it. 20 dollars for a small pie and a lackluster soggy salad made it a pretty terrible experience.
You must order the clam chowder pot pie! Tasty creamy chowder with clams in every bite under a flaky and crispy pastry crust. A winner!
This place is smoking!! It's so smoking that the compost spoon melted/bent a bit when put in the steaming salmon chowder. It's all good. That's why they provide metal spoons! How many metal spoons they got!! Well it's def environmentally friendly. Why this place only got 3.5 stars? Are people complaining about the bread bowl? Are their other warez not up to stuff? For a 'cafe', it's not bad. In fact it's quite good. Tho this review is mostly for the pies. So without further ado... We also got the traditional clam chowder. Everything was quite yummy! Tho it's not served in a bread bowl yet the fluffy pastry on top is legit! Or lit. Or groovy. Whatever generational term you wanna use, it don't matter. It hands down beat the traditional sourdough bread bowl. Also this place might be better than that other place at Pikes Place over in the states. Yah I said it. Come at me bro!! I think the price is worth it. The ambiance/vibe is packing! The salmon chowder sells out quick so make sure you get yours! Maybe even pay ahead of time so that you would get yours when it comes out. I would definitely go back. And it's got more seating than the one in the states. Also they got lemon meringue pies! And other stuff too. It ain't just a one trick pony! Solid A+

Freshly made and tasty. Not too heavy. Taste of the sea. What more does one want? Came here on a trip and we made a pit stop at Granville Island. Coming here, of course gotta have seafood! We grabbed the salmon chowder. And this didn't disappoint at all. read more
After wondering through the Granville Market, came across this place that had a line of about 20+ people. Though annoying, usually a good sign for great food. The lines moved fairly quickly. With several options to choose from, I ordered the chicken pot pie. Included was a side spring salad, the crust was flaky, warm and thinner than expected. Filled the chunks of chicken, vegetables, potatoes and a creamy broth, this dish was very filling and delicious. read more

This place looked cute and all the dishes look tasty. Decided to try the chicken pot pie and the corn chowder. The corn chowder soup was delicious and the flaky crust was very soft and yummy. A great culinary experience. The public market is a must stop when visiting Vancouver. read more

This is probably the busiest place in the market since it is a well-known must-try restaurant. The clams are large and the puff pastry is crispy. When the pastry is dipped into the creamy chowder, it soaks up the creamy sauce and makes it even more enjoyable. Even though there's a long line, but the wait is still bearable. We waited for about 7 minutes. The staffs are quick, but not super friendly and patient (which I understand since they're busy all the time). There's not much indoor tables and chairs, so we had it outside. Be aware of the seagulls if you are eating outside! The seagulls and birds are not scared of human, they can get very aggressive for food. This place is worth a try if you enjoy clam chowder, or seek a place for food. read more
Ordered the clam chowder and we were blown away!!! It was a cold rainy day, so the hot clam chowder definitely warmed us up. It had really great flavor, the only thing we wish was for it to be a bit creamier but that's just for our preference only. The puff pastry on top gave this dish a nice flaky texture as well. read more
Saw someone walking around with one of their crazy pies as soon as we entered Granville Island Market and knew I had to try it. It had been a pretty rainy day so I went with the chicken pot pie to warm up. The presentation is impressive with the massive flaky, buttery pastry crust covering the whole ramekin. Inside the pot pie itself was really good. Very creamy with plenty of chicken and veggies. The side salad had a simple balsamic dressing but was tasty and refreshing. I finished that with one of their pink lemonades and was very happy with my choice. Seating inside the market can be hit or miss depending on how busy it is. We waited around about 10 minutes until someone was finished and snagged their table. The pot pie was still hot by the time we sat down. read more

Their warm display of pot pies caught my attention! Happy workers crafted a nice presentation for the clam chowder pot pie: A golden brown layer of puff pastry had an imprint of a clam and covered a white porcelain mug. A small bed of salad sat next to the pie. While the puff pastry was flaky, the chowder was runny and bland. It lacked seasoning and did not taste like clams. The broccoli quiche arrived in a foil tray. I liked this more than the pot pie, but just tasted okay. Eating food from here likely requires a table. Open tables were scarce during lunchtime. If there's more than one person in your group, I highly recommend having someone find a table, while you order and wait for the food. read more
The Clam Chowder was really good here! It had large pieces if clams! It is abit on the looser side in terms of consistency (I prefer thicker) but the flavor makes up for it. The crunchy puff pastry on the top is a perfect topper and added the necessary texture to the soup. Very presentable and aesthetic as well! Definitely would recommend it. read more

Wanted to try this place for their clam chowder topped with puff pastry ($15.54). We were lucky enough to grab a table to enjoy our chowder. Although we liked the puff pastry topping, the chowder was just ok. Kinda watery and not thick or creamy like other chowders we've had. Also, the one we received was in a to go cup and not a porcelain bowl like others received, so it was kinda lukewarm - disappointing. read more
A visit to Granville Island in Vancouver, will attract you to the Public Market and its shops and eateries. I was looking for something that was different, and that is when I came upon A La Mode. While it had other fare, the headlining items here are suppose to be the pies. And the selections on the board and displays in the cases were enticing. So we had to give them a go. We chose the clam chowder pot pie and the salmon chowder pot pie. They are served in a large porcelain white mug with a nice looking well tanned pie crust, overflowing the mug. See my pictures, it provided good optics. But only that. The salmon chowder hardly had any salmon, instead some dark reddish pink thin scraps of seafood. Same, for the clam chowder in terms of the clams, where there was significantly smaller amounts of of this seafood. What was most disturbing was the chowder broth itself. While there was flavor, it was thin and soupy, and had the consistency of milk. Each of these chowders cost over $15 each. Money that could have been put to better use, elsewhere. read more
The service was quite fast even if you see a long line there. We ordered cream of mushroom soup, clam chowder soup and beef stew pot pie and a slice of lemon meringue pie to share. All was good except I thought their clam chowder soup was very weak. It was too watery. The pie was delicious. I think the best pot pie was the cream of mushroom. read more
Read nice reviews and saw the consistent line for A La Mode so we had to try it while we were at Granville Island. Over $50 CDN for 3 pot pies and a slice of pie seems steep and it is. The portions seemed large at first but the containers for the mushroom and beef pot pies are narrow such that you don't get as much food as you might think. The mushroom soup seemed fairly generic, and the clam chowder was thinner than most with a bit of fishy flavor. The beef stew was the best tasting with a nice rich sauce. The real draws here are the pastry crusts that topped all the pies. The lemon meringue pie was pretty standard for a bakery. Depending on how busy the market is, you can typically snag a table in the large outdoor seating area right outside A La Mode, but beware of the opportunistic seagulls! Even at the inflated prices (captive audience you know), a meal here is probably cheaper than other market eateries. read more
There was an extremely long line when I went but the wait was worth it. I tried their clam chowder and the pastry on top was flaky and buttery. The chowder inside was comforting and perfectly seasoned. Inside the market was packed, but you can also sit on the benches outside and have an ocean view. read more
This place is located in the public market in granville island as one of the many shops, so it was harder to find. However, we got there saturday afternoon around 4pm and there was a small line. I ended up getting the clam chowder pot pie, and thought it was not bad. The soup had a creamy and smooth texture, but i wished there were more clams in it. However, i really liked the fluffy crust on the top! Also, it's quite hard to get seating in the market as it is quite limited. read more

My friend, Emily R, went to BC a couple years ago and out of all the places she'd eaten at, this shop was the one that stood out to her the most to this day. Seeing that she only remembered this shop's name, I HAD to make a trip to Granville Island to check out the chowders LOL. It's located next to the marina (very back of the entrance) inside the Granville Island Public Market on Granville Island. There are paid lots and street parking around the area that could be very difficult to find especially on a weekend. My boyfriend and I were sooo full from dim sum that we couldn't get two chowders. Emily R highly recommended the chicken pot pie BUT of course, I'd want the clam chowder pot pie (whoops LOL). So we ordered that, and it came in a cute little bowl. The pastry was suuuuper flaky, buttery, and soft! Soooo good! We broke into it and the clam chowder was steaming hot. I burnt my tongue because I was super impatient to try it (whoops). But it was delicious! The combination of the chowder and the flakiness of the pastry was phenomenal! The one con about the dish was that the clams had a very "unclean" taste to it. It definitely didn't have a "fresh" taste that couldn't be masked by the chowder. We didn't get sick afterwards so that's all that mattered as the dish itself was delicious! Great place for a cold snowy day (def that kind of day when we went)! If I'm ever in Granville Island again, I definitely need to try the chicken pot pie next time. I got my clam chowder and now I gotta try the other recommendation! read more
Overall rating remains the same from my first impression a few years ago, but I'm updating because the parameters within that have shifted. This is still one of my go-to spots in the market. The service is improved and I haven't had issues recently. The food is still heavenly. I've branched out and tried a few of their sweet pies and while they're all winners the coconut cream remains my favourite. The savoury stuff is also all excellent. They have a new vegan chowder pot pie in a bread bowl which is great - lots of vegetables and perfectly creamy, the top pastry is flaky and tastes "buttery", and the bread bowl is hearty and tender, interestingly coated with everything seasoning. I don't think any of the sweet pies (at least those sold by the slice) are vegan - hopefully that's coming because I would love to try a vegan sweet pie based on their work with the vegan chowder. The one area where they go wrong for me is the drinks. Most of the times that I've ordered a latte from them, the almond milk (my go-to) splits. Obviously almond is not the same to work with as dairy, but IMO that's still not an excuse when most cafes can make a drink with almond milk just fine. read more
My friend recommend this Granville Island Public Market take-out resto to me. Lotsa pies to choose from in variations of both sweet & savoury. They have vegan options as well. They apparently have sugar-free pies, but none on the day I was there. I imagine you can order ahead of time. My friend & I decided to have a light snack, so I ordered their mushroom cream soup (with puff pastry baked in top) & my friend ordered the more traditional french onion soup (also with puff pastry on top). My pastry topper was super light, in spite of its heavy appearance and the soup was not thick as well (my preference). I also ordered their coconut cream pie which actually tasted much healthier, less sugary (& was much more dense) than expected. Its not what I was expecting but I am still happy to have had it. Seating nearby is quite limited. So assume that you may need to search elsewhere should it be busy that day at the market. Plenty of fresh and frozen pies available to try, depending on your plans. I recently visited Vancouver and whenever I do, I always make sure to stop by A La Mode for their pot pies. It's located in the public market of Granville Island which is filled with food stands, fruits/vegetables, arts n crafts, stationary stores, flowers, etc. They have a pretty good selection of pot pies ranging from corn, clam, chicken, beef, salmon, onion, and more. My favorite is the corn pot pie! They also offer other stuff too if pot pie is not your thing. It's perfect for the cold weather and I love the combination of the puff pastry with the soup. There's always a line, but service is quick so you don't have to wait too long. It's cafeteria style where you order your food, pick it up, then find an empty seat in the market or outside then enjoy! read more
WHEN: Sat @12:15pm Every time I come to Granville I eat here. It's so good, and I get the same item: CLAM CHOWDER POT PIE - $14.80 CAD It has everything I love: clam chowders with a flakey buttery pastry to top it off. Oh it even comes with a salad! Maybe it's just me but the portion seems smaller cuz I was able to finish the whole dish...or I was hungry. Everything about this dish was so good, it's why I keep coming back. It's actually hard to find a table indoors here so you're probably better off eating outside. read more
While at Granville Island, I tried out this place. I got the clam chowder pot pie. It was an interesting take compared to a chowder in a bread bowl. The puff pastry was flaky and worked well with the chowder. The chowder was peppery and not too salty and had a nice balance with potatoes and clams. dropped by granville island on wednesday at 12:30 pm and decided to have lunch here. wanting to switch things up, and break free from the usual, a la mode caught my eye. with so many options, i asked the server what their most popular dish was and she said the clam chowder. no sooner did i order the clam chowder, she immediately placed a clam chowder on the counter, and i was surprised, as i thought i would have to wait a bit for this. the pie crust on top gave it an impressive appearance, even drawing attention from a curious bystander who inquired about it. the puff pastry was flakey, but digging into the chowder, i found it to be lukewarm and watery. to my disappointment, the chowder was bland and lacked the desired rich and creaminess. at $16.59, i expected more. to be honest, i prefer campbell's chunky new england clam chowder, as it's creamy, hearty, and definitely more substantial than à la mode's clam chowder. read more

decent place for chicken pot pie in granville island public market! it's solid but not the best i've ever had. nevertheless, it definitely hits the spot especially when you want something warm, crispy, and hearty on a cold day. the exterior is nice and fluffy yet crispy, and the interior is more soupy but still has good chunks of chicken. service can get quite busy as it depends on how long the line is. you pay up front and can bring your food to eat anywhere. read more
I stepped upon this gem as I was walking thru Granville Island Market. I recalled seeing this place on TikTok and looked at the menu and surprised they had some vegetarian options! They told me there was one last corn chowder, so I had to try it! It's usually rare for me to have a chowder option and with a baked puff pastry on top. Sold! The puff pastry was so crispy and good! They even had a little corn shape on it to distinguish it was a corn chowder! So cute. The cup wasn't as full of chowder as I expected and I wish there was more in the chowder than just corn. I still really enjoyed it and ate it all up. It was so good!!! read more
I got the salmon chowder, and it was so warm and delicious. I usually am a clam chowder lover, and was hesitant to try a salmon chowder instead, but I was pleasantly surprised! The salmon chowder was so flavorful, and did not have an overly fishy taste. The crust was so flaky and buttery, and complimented the chowder so well. Highly recommend! read more
This restaurant is a must visit if you are in Vancouver. Especially for all of you cruisers out there that just have one day, you need to go to Granville Island marketplace, and visit A La Mode. I highly recommend the salmon chowder. The salmon was smoked, and it's in the best tasting chowder I've ever had with this flaky crust covering the top. See my photos. This is one of the busier shops inside Grandville Public Market. There is always a line but don't despair because it moves really quick. They are famous for their chicken pot pie, pot pie soup, clam and salmon chowder. I like their salmon pot pie chowder the most, because I had the clam one and it was just okay. They take CC, but it's really hard to find a table during rush hour. One of the items I got here that is so worth mentioning is their butter tart. I thought I need to go somewhere special for the Canadian famous butter tart but they have it here and it's thick and so fluffy, flaky, while chunky and delicious!! read more

Chowder pot pie?! Is that even allowed?! So much goodness in one cup is insane and I am 100% here for it. If you thought clam chowder bread bowls were amazing then you must try this. The pastry top is perfectly crumbly, soft and buttery. It melts perfectly with each bite of chowder which has big chunks of salmon! I was shocked. They don't skimp out here and it was so good! This is a walk up food spot inside of the market and the seating in front is shared with the other food vendors so it's tough finding a table. If you do find one though be ready to share because the market can get busy! Even if I had to stand and eat it though, it would still be worth it! read more

Came here on a Saturday afternoon to redeem my Elite Perk, which was a small plate of goodies (a mini clam chowder and a mini apple tart) and a cup of coffee. The apple pie was the perfect way to end our meal, as it was not to sweet and baked to perfection. I also ordered a regular sized clam chowder and a chicken pot pie, coming with a side salad that had avocadoes and balsamic vinegar. I found that although the ratio of pastry to chowder for the mini clam chowder was off, the ratio for the regular size was perfect. We've visited A La Mode a few times before and the clam chowder has always been my favourite and the chicken for him! For drinks, we ordered a regular and a pink lemonade, which were both quite good. The pink one was a tad too sweet for me personally, but was great mixed with the regular. With Covid, they served everything with disposable recyclable plates and cutlery, which was great for if you couldn't finish or wanted to enjoy it at home. Keep in mind that the seating inside is limited due to Covid, so you might have to enjoy your meal outside undercover like we did. It was a rainy and windy day so it ended up getting pretty chilly. Overall it was a great experience, and we really enjoyed our order as well as the complimentary plate of treats! Will definitely be coming back on a nicer day! read more

Looked a lot better than it tasted unfortunately. Got French onion and clam chowder, both were watery and underseasoned and puff pastry for clam chowder was underbaked. Honestly pretty disappointing because it looked like it was going to be delicious :( read more
