There is a new brunch spot in Markham! A Corner Cafe is located at Highway 7 east of McCowan Road directly across from Markville Mall. It's also close to a Krispy's Kajun Chicken and replaces a former Green Grotto location. A Corner Cafe is currently in its soft opening. My friend and I went to check it out on the second day of their soft opening. Walking in, the space is large and spacious. There are three sections of seating, one area of tables on the left, a long communal table in the middle, and several booth seats on the right-hand side. There's a bike hanging on the right-hand side of the wall as decor. The brunch menu runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day while the evening menu is from 3 p.m. until closing at 10 p.m. Their brunch menu features the ever-popular eggs benedicts, pancakes, waffles, chicken and waffles, open-faced sandwiches, pasta, salad bowls, and a few sides. We were served lemon-infused water in a pitcher while we decided what to order from the minimalist clipboard menus. The drink menu was located on a chalkboard next to the kitchen (a bit difficult to see if you are sitting on the side where the chalkboard is or further away from it in general -- you'll have to get up to look at it). I ordered the Eggs Benny with Smoked Salmon which was served with a side of salad and fries while my friend ordered the Chicken n Waffle. She also got a small Brewed Coffee. (Feedback: We were a bit disappointed to see the coffee served in a paper container considering we were dining in and weren't taking the coffee to-go. Perhaps they haven't switched to mugs yet as it's a soft opening?) The Eggs Benny was a huge and beautiful portion! The colours were so vibrant on the plate. The two poached eggs were done perfectly! They looked so soft and bouncy with a bright yellow hollandaise sauce on it. The slices of smoked salmon looked like the higher grade type and the important part was that it remained raw while on the egg. (I personally dislike it when the surrounding heat warms up the smoked salmon so that it doesn't taste cool anymore.) The fries were slightly crispy and seasoned and tasted really good! I liked the fries. The salad was nice as well. I liked how when I cut into the poached egg, the yolk oozed out beautifully (ideal for those of you who need the perfect boomerang shots). It was definitely a 100% perfectly poached egg! (Feedback: The eggs bennys were served on a slice of bread instead of the usual English muffin. I would have preferred an English muffin or slice of bread that was toasted a bit more because the slice of bread was a bit soggy. I shared this feedback with the owner, which he acknowledged. He said he didn't want to use the typical English muffins and that's why they had chosen bread instead.) The Chicken n Waffles was also a gigantic portion! The fried boneless pieces of chicken were served with four waffles on the side, salad, and a generous portion of spicy mayo in a cute Asian-inspired container. I tried a bit of the chicken and waffles and really enjoyed the slightly seasoned and spicy chicken and the soft and fluffy waffles. It was great! Again, it was a huge portion and my friend wasn't able to finish it all on her own. Since I know they're in their soft opening stage and will be continually changing their food and service to become better and better, I hope my feedback help them! (Another idea: Maybe they could even expand their evening menu to include having all-day brunch as well. Would foodies enjoy having a cafe that serves brunch all day?) Sauces for both pasta seems to be the same. It's better than like a HK style cafe, but I expected more from a cafe and brunch type restaurant. It's not good enough for me wanting to come back, especially there are other better brunch places in the area. Menu selections are limited and nothing really stands out that makes me want to order it. I am guessing the pasta is not their specialty. The eggs benedict and chicken waffles seems to be more popular. My review is based on pasta only. One thing that turns me off is the cheap utensils they used, similar to Dollarama quality. This is a cute little cafe with decent seating and good ambiance. A bookshelf in the back houses some games and books to browse through at your leisure. We ordered the tofu bowl and the piggy Benny. I felt that both had alot of potential. The piggy Benny was made with a generous quantity of butter sauteed mushrooms topped over tender pork. Over top of which, a perfectly poached egg sat. The pork was unfortunately cooked with a sweet sauce that took away from our overall satisfaction from the dish. The tofu bowl was also strangely coated with what tasted like duck sauce. In other words also sweet, in addition to the seaweed salad that is sweet. I usually do not like to waste food but I could not get myself to finish the bowl. I went here on a Thursday afternoon and it was pretty quiet, but started getting busier around 2. The salmon eggs Benedict is what brought me here and it was yummy! The fries are Costco fries and I ate all the salad (I never usually eat greens) My boyfriend had the fried chicken benny and an iced coffee. Not sure what the deal was, but his iced coffee was free and my iced passion fruit green tea was $2! (Regular price $5.99!!) We sat for a little after eating and it was a nice spot to relax. Came here with low expectations but left very satisfied. Of course the place to compare with is Alchemy. There is a lot to like about this place. Good atmosphere and lots of seating. Check. The fried chicken is boneless and mainly dark meat. Excellent flavour and crispy crust. Juicy and moist on the inside just how it should be. The salmon egg benny i did not try but never seen my mom finish her food so fast. She even ate it faster than my dad. That tells you how good the benny was. Lots of cool magazines at your disposal. There has been an increasing number of brunch spots/cafes opening up in the Markham area. I have also had the opportunity to try most of them in the past several weeks. Unfortunately, this one fell short compared to the others in the area. The space was quite nice - well lit and very spacious. There is a long table in the middle with outlets for those who are looking for a space to work or study. I have no complaints with the service either. We ordered the avocado toast, the fried chicken & waffle and a side of sweet potato fries. The avocado toast was served on a slice of store-bought rye bread. The plating was interesting as they covered most of the toast with spinach leafs. It was difficult to see where the avocado was since it was spread so sparingly that it didn't reach the corners of the toast. The spread was so thin that I could barely taste the avocado. They also spread another layer of what I would guess as salmon roe butter over the avocado that was equally as thin. The egg was poached well with a very runny yolk, but it was not seasoned. This dish was a little underwhelming for something so simple. The fried chicken & waffle was better. The chicken skin was crispy and the chicken was juicy. The waffles are a little too crispy for my liking. The buttermilk batter was likely under-seasoned, which made the waffle taste a little bland. In my opinion, I would choose the chicken waffles at Alchemy, Chee organic and Elephant grind over this one. Unfortunately, it is because I've recently tried so many different brunch spots in the GTA and in downtown that I am unable to give it more than 3 stars. No eggs benny on the dinner menu but the brunch menu items look amazing. Dinner is a few waffle/pancake options, a salad, pasta, some snacks. They have a bottle of minty citrus water on each table, and they have a whole chalkboard of drink options on the wall as well as a drinks menu with tea, fruit drinks, etc. We got a matcha latte. They're working on the latte art but the heart on ours was not bad. The cups are so nice! We had a pale grey cup with speckles. I love speckles. All the cups are from Vietnam. Super cool. We got the chicken and waffles for the second part of our dinner. The first part was sushi elsewhere. There were four waffle quarters, two pieces of boneless chicken (dark meat), and some spring mix salad with salad dressing served on the side. The little goblet with maple syrup was adorable. The waffles were the lightest I've had in a long time and the chicken was crispy and juicy. All in all, the dish went really well together, salad included, and at $15, we were very satisfied. I wanted to order a bowl but many of the food items were sold out so I ended up ordering a pasta bowl (chicken alfredo) as that's all they had available. It was ok. A hidden gem in Markham for a great brunch. Been there many times and their food and portions are good. My favourite is the chicken and waffles. The waffles were light and fluffy. The portion size was pretty decent as I was full to the brim after clearing my plate. I also got an iced coffee, which was honestly worse than mediocre. It tasted like they dumped half a cup of hot coffee into a cup of ice, and there was almost no flavour to it. Hopefully their other drinks don't taste as watered down! Would give a 0 if I could. Can't comment on the food because they can't even get the order of patrons properly. Only one table in front of us, and they still fucked up. Had to advocate for ourselves; they only believed us when the patrons in front of us advocated for us as well. Once our table was ready, they gave it to the patrons after us so we had to advocate again. Got seated but ultimately decided to leave, the whole experience was just sour after that. 30 minutes of my life wasted, but better than waiting longer because it's questionable if you would even get your food in order if you would have to advocate for that yourself. Come if it's dead, not when it's busy, they clearly cannot handle more than two tables at a time. Came here since I was craving brunch and also chicken and waffles, this place certainly satisfied both cravings. Upon entering I loved the bicycles they were hung up on the wall, it really gave a wonderful aesthetic to it. From the outside the menu was displayed on the widows which helps customers decide what they want before coming in to avoid crowding. Felt very safe coming in with sanitizer available right at the table to order. We decided to get the smoked salmon egg Benedict and the chicken and waffles. What makes this place interesting is their Hollandaise sauce which tasted very "cheesy" but also had a hint of spice. I'm not too sure how to describe it but it sort of gave off a nacho cheese experience but I'm also sure there wasn't any cheese in it. Definitely a different experience with the Hollandaise sauce. There was included a spicy Mayo and some maple syrup to pair with the chicken and waffles. It was nice to be given 4 waffles but there were three pieces of chicken making it a bit awkward to share with two people. However the portion of chicken itself was big enough to split into two portions. Overall I really enjoyed the food and from the menu I saw there was a lot of shrimp dishes available which as an avid shrimp lover I'm excited to try. The salted egg yolk wings were bomb! The flavor was subtle but not in a way that left it bland, it was so good I had to scrape off any bits from the box and made sure it didn't go to waste! Surprisingly the seaweed and bonito flakes, which normally are only for presentation, added a nice flavour that really worked. The fried chicken rice bowl with seaweed and gari kind of looked like a Japanese dish but the rice was missing the vinegary taste, the diced fresh cucumber should have been pickled, the rice bowl was just plain tasting although the fried chicken was quite good. I was actually very excited to try out this cafe as I've seen some foodies visit before. We came around 2:30pm on a Sunday and was promptly seated down right away as the restaurant was not as busy that time. My only complaint was that the toast was just a tad bit hard to cut (but could be the knife that wasn't sharp enough). I love how it came with a side of fries and salad (for the best of both worlds LOL). The size was pretty big overall as I wouldn't have been able to finish it all. - Chicken Bowl ($14): It was basically a bowl of rice with super crispy chicken, corn, cucumber, seaweed, and with a poached egg on top. The egg was cooked to perfection as the yolk exploded all over the rice. The chicken was really crispy but juicy at the same time.
