3.5/5 Sunday brunch. This was my 2nd visit in a month, last time with friend and this time introduced to my family. This is a popular cafe and was full on a Sunday morning. We ordered cream of broccoli soup, meatball spaghetti, fried chicken benny and smoke salmon benny. Same problem as last visit, first dish arrived then waited very long for 2nd & 3rd dishes, soup came after spaghetti and should be the other way round. Staff were insufficient when the cafe was full so orders were a bit messed up. Meatball spaghetti too salty and spaghetti a bit overcooked, otherwise foods were delicious. This is a nice cosy cafe, I sincerely hope they could improve on sequence of meal serving so clients on the same table could enjoy food together rather than one eating and one waiting forever. Everyday I'm Waffling (hummed to the LMFAO hit) Waffling, Waffling!!!! Well maybe not everyday, but I've been doing Brunch with whom I call the Queen of Brunch (QoB) and it seems I have a lot to learn. :D Gone are the simple days. The days where eggs are mass fried on a griddle that is so hot that they burn to a crispy brown before they get to make an over-easy. The burnt offerings, like bacon, served so over fried that they are nothing more than deep brown hickory sticks. The days where hash browns are hacked off the griddle with a hammer and chisel, or scrapped off the floor. Oh the good old days of breakfast - OH WAIT! This is the stuff that I want to avoid! OH DUH ME! Though I will miss the $5 breakfast specials - as described above, we really should be eating better. Think about it, breakfast is supposed to be the most important meal of the day. They have a cute shop with old and new charm mixed together. It really is #photoworthy with bicycles on the walls and various oddities. Let's see if the hype can be lived up to - the decor seems to. Order up! Chicken and Waffles - my go to. Eggs Benny - the QoB's go to. The Eggs Benny was served with pork belly and mushrooms. The hollandaise looked on point. Add on some leafy greens and fries and that completes the dish. Let's see if it passes the QoB's high standards. For my part, I found the eggs to be well poached and pork belly was delish with the earthy mushrooms. The waffles on my dish was pretty much standard issue. Just enough sweet to help balance the savoury. The chicken was a bit of a miss for me. Way to brown (almost like it was a reheat) and it was too oily/greasy. When it comes to this dish, the chicken needs to be spot on. The spicy dip was good though. The Queen of Brunch gave the place her note of satisfaction. Came here last sat morning at 9am, no one in the cafe. We pretty much own it, sat down, ordered a egg benedict and coffee to share with my hubby. The egg Benedict is not what I expect ... usually egg york should be more liquid, but that's not the case here. At 5 pm, we were the only table here so service was fast and attentive. The food menu is quite limited but since A Corner Cafe is still relatively new, I am looking forward to some changes and additions in the future. Avocado toast was really good! Customer service was fine, nothing shocking. The lady showed me to my seat and never really communicated much. The rice bowl was $16, the chicken was very juicy and mouthwatering! I think the best part of the rice bowl was the chicken. Everything else in the rice bowl was average. The matcha latte tasted like any other latte. A Corner Cafe is located at a very inconspicuous location on Highway 7, but that plaza has been increasing in business lately, so hopefully this is good for them! I have been to the Green Grotto a number of times before it closed, and I like how they have changed some parts of it but kept the layout the same. I tried it for the first time today for lunch and we were a party of five. I had the Smoked Salmon Eggs Benny, and the others ordered the Chicken Rice Bowl, Shrimp Pasta, Shrimp Toast and a Strawberry Waffle. We also got the Fresh Fruit Tea to share. I was pleasantly surprised by the food as the Yelp reviews seem to be quite mixed. My smoked salmon benny was a really good portion size, and I thought that the combination was wonderful. The fries are tasty (I'm a picky fry-eater!) and the salad had a nice dressing, but a little too much dressing. Everyone was satisfied with their meals, and my aunt said that they cook their shrimp quite nicely, so I wouldn't shy away from ordering those dishes! The strawberry waffle had a great texture with a bit of a crunch but soft on the inside. The only thing that could be improved was the Chicken Rice Bowl, which I felt like just had a bunch of random toppings that didn't necessary go well together. I especially enjoyed the fresh fruit tea, as they refilled it for us a couple of times as well and it was a delicious blend of fruit, tea and honey. Overall, I'd give this place 2.5/5 and I'm definitely not coming back. I got the Bacon Mushroom Eggs Benedict and a latte. Let's start with latte first. It was really watery and tasted like it was made with black coffee with foamed milk rather than an espresso. Not off to a good start. The benedict was served on untoasted rye bread, an odd choice, considering that English muffins are usually the standard. This made cutting it up really hard (especially since the utensils weren't particularly sharp). The hollandaise needed work (maybe a little acid) since I could only taste the egg yolk. I didn't think the mushrooms and bacon were anything special, though beware, it wasn't button mushrooms but shimeji mushrooms (which have a lot of water content). And they happened to be offering a free drink with every food order (May 13 -19, 4pm - closing). She knows where to find all the good deals! This table has lots of electrical outlets on the underside, perfect for charging your devices. The décor is simple and tasteful, with a couple of bicycles hanging from the walls. We ordered from the Evening Menu (4pm - 10pm): Avocado Toast (Avocado spread, sundried tomato pesto, poached eggs (2), chili flakes, on toasted light rye, $7.00) and Salad Bowl (Arugula, roasted veggies, cranberry, toasted almond, ricotta cheese, Dijon citrus dressing, $10.00). We ended up sharing the Avocado Toast and my friend took home the salad. With two eggs, it was enough to fill our light craving. It was also served with a small salad of mixed greens. The eggs were cooked just right and it tasted good but we both thought this dish, at $7.00, was a better value than the salad. I hope they don't see this and raise the price. Ssshhh... There was a Snack Bar section offering Chicken Tenders (2), Poutine, Nachos, and other small plates, all for $8 or $9 each. This is not just coffee, tea, or juice. It's ANY drink on the menu! I had a Mango Slushie ($6.49) and my friend had the Passionfruit Yakult ($5.99). A foodie friend of mine owns this new cafe on the block ^^ I'm so excited that he has finally made his dreams come true! A Corner Cafe is not exact in a 'corner' but it is a very cute spot with modern decors and very spacious! It took over what used to be a Green Grotto bubble tea shop. My date and I ordered the Chicken and Waffles, Pasta with Mushroom and Spinach sauce, and a side of sweet potato fries to share. The fried chicken was very crispy and it pairs nicely with the mayo sauce. I think the pasta would taste even better with some Parmesan cheese and chili flakes sprinkled on top ;) I came back a second time for Dessert Waffles - Housemade waffles, with ice cream, fresh fruits and pink coconut whipped cream! It was so filling and delicious :) The coconut whipped cream was a very nice touch! This is the perfect spot to chill with friends, do your studies, or even just read a book while sipping on a latte. This is the perfect combo of trendy aesthetic, productive space, and a fun area to hang out WITH great food. I had the piggy benny all 2 times I came. People I came with had the chicken and waffles. I personally am not a fan of waffles so I never really tried it at any other places either. Piggy benny was divine. The pork was grilled to perfection and the egg was perfectly poached. I literally could not ask for a better brunch. Their salad was also nirvana, and I usually hate salads. I would change nothing. This cafe is located conveniently on Hwy 7 right across from Markville Mall, where the previous Green Grotto was. There's plenty of seating with wide tables, and charging outlets for a place to work as well. The parking is also manageable in this plaza and doesn't require me to have a panic attack just to find a spot. The brunch selections resemble that of Alchemy Coffee down the street, but I would say it's not quite up to their standard. I have tried their meatball pasta and chicken and waffles. The pasta was alright but nothing too special, and was a bit dry as well. The chicken was very crispy, but was missing like a special sauce compared to other places. They had a buy one, get one half off special with drinks. I have heard bad reviews on their coffee, so got their peach green tea instead. It was way too sweet even with the sugar adjustment, and it was just too much to finish all of it. Overall, the food is decent but there are better brunch places around the area. There were many posts and pictures going viral on the internet when this cafe opened so I absolutely had to try it. The location is extremely convenient and parking situation is never a problem unlike some brunches and cafes nearby. I went in one evening for dinner with a friend as not many cafes offer dinner. Saw a new cafe pop up on Yelp so we thought we'd give it a try. It's a nice cozy place (I believe where the old Green Grotto was) with very nice staff that seem to be slowly learning how to run a cafe. We visited on a weekday during brunch time and there were plenty of seats available. The bacon and mushroom eggs benny was quite good. The eggs were well poached, hollandaise was creamy and bacon had great texture. Although the fries were nicely seasoned, it was just ordinary Cavendish fries, I think I would prefer a version of homefries instead. The shrimp toast was pretty standard. The eggs were nicely scrambled and the shrimp was nicely seasoned with sweet chili thai sauce, but wasn't anything super special. It was nice to try a new place that satisfied, will be back in the future to see how they improve. Finally get a chance to try their rice bowl as they were out of rice last time around 8 pm. I love everything from their beef rice bowl except for the mushroom. I felt like the vinegar from the ginger has mixed with the mushroom which ruined the overall experience of the rice bowl. It would be best to ask the staff to put the ginger aside or not to add them at all. I also tried their chicken and waffle and they are very crispy and delicious. It's not that big a place but they have a very long table in the middle that's works great for groups. Most people got the fried chicken benny and their portions were huge. I got the piggy benny and really enjoyed the savoury pork and mushroom combo, it was different than any other benedict i've had. Everything was fairly priced especially for the portions and the service was fast and efficient. Even with a large group we weren't waiting too long for our food. So far we've been twice. And both times, I've been very happy with the food and drinks that we got. Both times we ordered the Vietnamese latte and LOVE! Espresso was nice and strong (smooth as well), and i'm guessing they must have mixed in condensed milk with regular milk giving it a bit of sweetness but not overly so. I ordered a regular latte and it fell flat compared to the Vietnamese one. When i first looked at the menu I thought that the prices were on the higher end, but when the food arrived, the prices were justified by portion size and food quality. Avocado toast would easily be $7 with just avocado and toast at any place downtown. But here it's $7 with plenty of avocado and TWO poached eggs and a side of salad. Honestly the best poached eggs i've found up around the area. The salad could have been better, i did find some wilted pieces in there. The bennys were good too, but a bit strange that the bread they used is sliced rye. Comes with side salad and french fries. I would prefer home fries but no biggie. The best dish here, is definitely the chicken and waffles. Three pieces of large crispy dark meat and waffle. The waffle tasted like what a chinese "egg waffle" would taste like. So a bit more extra flavour than a regular belgian waffle. Note though, the omelettes are not what you would be accustomed to. The omelettes are eggs cooked in a small cast iron pan, topped with whatever toppings that option you selected came with. Very spacious place, with a lot of seating as well. Markham has a lot of mediocre brunch places but A Corner Cafe definitely isn't one of them! The parking lot is a little small so you may be waiting a for a spot. AMBIANCE: 4/5 I really liked how the restaurant was set up. The big windows allowed for a lot of natural light (which I love). There are seating arrangements for all party sizes and placed properly without being cramped. The space was clean and spacious. FOOD: 4/5 1. Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict: My boyfriend really liked his eggs benedict. The eggs were poached perfectly. They use bread as the base and that got a little soggy towards the end. The plate comes with fries and salad. 2. Chicken & Waffles: LOVED this. The chicken was fried to perfection. The waffles were light and fluffy. Probably the best one I had in Markham so far. SERVICE: 4/5 Service was efficient. The food came out fast. Water was refilled. The food is competitively priced with the other places in the area. I had visited this restaurant 3 times. Environment 4.5/5 Plenty of space between each table. They also have big table for large group. Only improvement is air circulation because sometime the restaurant was hot and stuffy. Service 5/5 Friendly Staff. They will take reservation in advance. Food 4.5/5 I will recommend Smoked Salmon Benny, Shrimp Omelette and chicken n waffle. All of these came with house salad, and I like their house vineger dressing.
