I have been meaning to try this spot for a long time as I've always seen how aesthetic and pretty their brunch has been. However expectations did not live up to the hype. Arriving at 11 opening time and being the first table seated we were excited to order. We ordered the sweet potato fries to share and found it standard and delicious. Fried well to crispiness and not too salty. But when we tried the Taiwanese meat sandwich and the Mushroom Sandwich and found them lacking in flavour and most importantly cold. I've tried these korean style egg sandwiches before and the main thing is that the bread is and the egg is warm when serving. So it really threw us off that the egg was fridge cold. Cold eggs and stale bread that honestly tasted oily was a disappointment for this spot. We ordered the ice cream sandwich for dessert which WAS enjoyable and the saving grace of the meal. They have really gone downhill. Not sure if there was some sort of restructuring or change with the new location opening but their service was extremely slow, all dishes came out at different time with several coming 10 or more minutes after the first dish, and the temperature of some dishes were close to room temperature opposed to hot. The dishes have also changed since they first opened which is good that they reinvent but the flavours seem more muted and in general less flavourful. It's also kind of annoying to be forced to pay auto gratuity for a slow and mid level kitchen since it's a party of 6 (large party), 18%. This place? A hidden gem in Scarborough. It's such a cute cafe with a proper dine in area and the menu is elaborate starting from hot to cold beverages and lots of food and sweet options as well. We ordered their iced tiramisu latte - came with a ladyfinger biscuit and it tastes so good, perfect drink if you're in need of caffeine to wake you up. My boyfriend got a buttercream espresso latte and he said it was delicious. Plus the small cookies/biscuits that came with it? YUM! I remember such a great experience from a Yelp event in the past so I had to revisit. It even satisfied picky kids like my little cousins. La Petite Colline / Shan Shan is super popular for brunch and reservations are full on the prime time on weekends. So, I recommend checking them out for dinner as since their dishes suits for dinner too and easier to get reservations. If it's full, you can also call in advance to be added to the waitlist to avoid the longer wait times. We ordered the steak frites, steak omurice, chicken katsu, smoke salmon toast and chicken udon carbonara. I recommend the chicken carbonara. The chicken may look a little pink, but has ham in it and seasoning is well infused into the chicken and the udon is delicious without being too heavy. All the egg toast and bakery section is a 5-star all around and we also got some bread to go. The drinks and desserts were also amazing. The steak dishes are probably the only slight let down. While they are perfectly cooked to medium in presentation, the meat was still a bit tough to chew through. So I'll recommend skipping the steak dishes. Overall the food, bakery and ambiance will still get me coming back for more. Make it a trip and hit up an escape room or VR game area a short drive away. read more

I highly suggest going during non-peak hours or making a reservation ahead of time as wait times can go upwards to 1 hour. For this visit, we had the mac and cheese, latte & mocha, banh mi toast, and truffle fries. Although most items were passable or nothing too special to note. I'll start off with the ambiance. Shan Shan cafe is beautifully decorated and definitely gives off a higher end feel. It's not a very large space and they dont have many tables for large parties so its best to make a reservation. My only complaint is that they dont give you much leeway for your reservation time. I was parking my car and got a call at 1:04pm that they were about to give my table away and the staff member on the phone wasnt nice about it either. I ordered their katsu curry (pork) which came with fried rice and a fried egg on top. The quality was ok. The fried rice wasnt very flavourful and the pork katsu was a bit on the bland side. The curry sauce was nicely flavoured but wasn't as rich as I've had at other restaurants. I also ordered their iced quicksand americano. It was a nice iced coffee drink but nothing special about it. They also have a bakery right in the entrance area. They have some unique breads and pastries but on the pricier side of things. Overall it was an alright experience. So I took my gf here for a 1pm brunch reservation on a saturday. Haven't really been to this strip mall before but I knew about it because I always drive by it when I'm going through the woodbine & steeles intersection. I also registered for a Yelp elite event at Canadian Thai which is literally in this same plaza. The inside is very modern looking. Brightly lit, lots of glass. When you first enter you are greeted by the bakery. A little past the waiting area and it's the cafe seating area. I noticed that the menu is actually pretty big and has a lot of variety. For this visit we decided to try a couple things. Mac n cheese: If I'm keeping it real, this mac n cheese had decent seasoning but fell kinda short. Having just eaten mac n cheese at Smash Kitchen in Unionville, I was trying to find redemptive qualities LOL. The cut-up sausages as garnish were cute but it made the dish kinda kiddy. They used breadcrumb topping but the breadcrumbs didn't cover enough of the surface and didn't create a crust. The macaroni they used was your typical elbow mac. Finally, the menu said it was a 3 cheese mac but I certainly couldn't taste 3 cheeses (also, for a good mac you should be able to see the cheesy strings when you pick up the macaroni and there was none of that). Pink shrimp linguine: Ok this was actually really nice! The flavour was on point. The shrimps were juicy and seasoned well. Our only gripe was that it definitely should've been priced in the $15-20 range because of how small it was. I I can get pasta along yonge st in North York, pay around the same price and get a larger portion so that was a lil ridiculous. Strawberry milk custard thick toast: Great quality bread and the berries cut the richness of the condensed milk for a perfect bite. Roasted iron goddess latte (w/ oat milk): My gf said this was good. She said it was quite subtle in flavour. They happened to have oat milk as a substitute for reg milk which was a plus in her books. We definitely want to come back to try some of the other items on the cafe menu. I think pastries and buns is what this place is famous for so I'm leaning towards trying one of the sandwiches/buns next time. A lot of the breads and pastries also seemed to be sold out already by the time we started looking at the menu at 1pm so that's something to keep in mind. The pasta dish looked and smelled fantastic, and I loved my hojicha latte. I ordered the new croissant toast with the korean beef inside. It was made very fresh and the balance between the bun and fresh ingredients helped with the sodium of the korean marinated beef. The buns are a bit over priced - i think I'd personally go to another HK bakery in the area for cheaper and more traditional tasting buns. but I would come for a latte and sandwhich again for sure. We invited my husband's godparents out for brunch and they suggested this eatery as they had been here previously and much enjoyed it. After our own experience here, we concur! The restaurant is easy to find in the plaza on the southeast corner of Steeles and 404. There's a fair bit of parking although it's usually pretty much full. You can find additional parking space nearby and there's an underground parking facility as well. You get 3 hours if dining the in the restaurant. That's plenty, because even if you have a reservation, there's a 90 minute maximum for the reservation. (Yes, they will come to your table and enforce it. They have to. It's that busy!) I made my reservation weeks in advance. Even though it was for 11:00 a.m., their system begins at 11:30 a.m., but it wasn't a problem. They just oversee it manually. I also got a confirmation text after speaking to the staff on the phone, and another confirmation/reminder text the day before. Good stuff! The lineup was already out the door by the time we met our godparents. We got a great seat, in the window corner with a booth and some chairs. We also ended up having my daughter with us for 5, but no problem. The staff noticed and brought over an extra chair, which fit just fine on the end without encroaching on the next table. The ambiance is beautiful and the restaurant was super clean. We noticed the bakery cases as you come through into the restaurant. We were immediately greeted and had our drink orders taken. Water was brought quickly for everyone and replenished throughout the meal. We had a range of coffees from plain Americano, to iced coffee with ice cream, to lattes, to an iced honey coffee. All delicious and not at all like sugary mass produced takeout. Excellent! And beautiful to look at, too. 2 of us decided on the steak and fries dish; 1 for the omurice; 1 for the salmon sandwich; and 1 for the creamy mushroom linguine. There was a bit of a wait for the food, but luckily the hot coffees came with crunchy little pastry bites to nibble on. Oddly enough, the salmon sandwich took the longest and we waited until that finally came so we could all eat together. The portions are very generous and whoever had fries could easily share with whoever didn't. All the ingredients were fresh and thankfully no soggy, overcooked vegetables. The salads that came with the steak and fries had slices of grapefruit and a really light, fresh dressing, not salty. The steaks were actually cooked the way we ordered them, not one degree higher as is often the case. The omurice tasted as good as it looked. The garlic bread with the linguine was a little on the average takeout side but otherwise everything was good restaurant quality. As we asked for the bill, we ordered some of the spooky spider buns. The server advised that if we bought 6 instead of 5, we'd be saving ourselves the full HST. Sounds good to me, and thank you! One more bun and less money to pay is great. Service was attentive and prompt, and helped to sort out our orders when there were some issues. The portions do seem small but I feel they fill you up to a reasonable amount. Their bakery is also a lovely way to take home some baked breads for home! I do think the prices are a little high for the food, but I do enjoy the ambience and the brunch-like selection of food. I also tried their iron goddess latte and the matcha latte. 1) Omurice and steak The portions are surprisingly pretty big for the price (it was $23.99 which I find to be a bit pricey but it's brunch food). As for the flavour, it wasn't anything special. I wish the rice was better, the sauce was just okay, the steak was not bad and was cooked and seasoned well. 3.5/5 2) Curry katsu The curry sauce for this dish was nicely seasoned, I enjoyed this one more than the omurice. Cute cafe/ brunch spot with an Asian fusion twist! Came here for weekend brunch and although it was busy, we got a table for 2 pretty quickly. The ceilings are high and the ambiance was really nice. Make sure you don't park in front of the restaurant as it's a 15 minute parking zone only. Additional parking is at the back or side parking lots. Servers are quiet and didn't speak much to us but were still friendly. This is what we ordered: Latte 6/10 - They only had oat milk substitution. The overall taste was okay. Super cute aesthetic though. Came in a sleep black cup with some dalgona on the side. Truffle fries 10/10 - This was super crispy and tasty. Truffle mayo was great for dipping. Overall loved this and was great for sharing and starting off the meal. Smoked salmon toast 9/10 - A little bit on the oilier side for the bread but overall it was well balanced and tasted amazing. As you eat the sandwich the bottom will have no filling anymore though. Shan Shan omurice 6/10 - A little disappointed with this dish. On this visit we ordered a couple of 'new' items, the log croissant sando and the meat lovers. The croissant sando has a few options of filling from smoked salmon ($2.00 more), rib eye beef and Taiwanese fried chicken ($1.00 more). Ham and cheese is the only filling where they don't charge more. The bread was super crispy but this also made for a messy sandwich. Fortunately all their sandwiches come with a wet wipe now. Voted as one of the best new bakeries of Toronto by BlogTO, their drool-worthy pastries are as heavenly as the pastel blue paint that adorns the walls with gold trim. This luxe interior is shiny and bright with modern contemporary aesthetic. A lofty ceiling, white grey polished marble tile, bright and airy yet grounded with wooden wall accents. Enough about the decor, what about the food? Almost all of the buns, breads and desserts were sold out for the day. I was content with the remaining item they had left - a blue cheese danish (puff pastry). It paired well with the hot roasted oolong late (which had sweet earthy tones) and the hot roasted iron goddess latte (which tasted smooth, very balanced). Both tea lattes tasted too sweet for me. Each tea latte had a shot glass full of liquid sugar, something to know for next time. They offer delivery and takeout. A good way to bypass the lineups! read more

I'm waffling between 3.5 and 4 stars. I knew it'd be busy when we arrived on a Saturday during lunch. We put in our phone number for the waitlist and asked the host approximately how long the wait would be. We were number ten on the waitlist, but the host said perhaps the wait would be around twenty minutes. We saw a table for four open and two two-seaters available. I noticed a couple of extra chairs by the host stand and asked if we, as a group of three, could sit at a table for two and use one of those extra chairs. I'm glad the host accepted this suggestion. Our dishes didn't take long to arrive. The mushrooms in the creamy mushroom pasta were a bit salty for us, and it's too bad the bread wasn't toasted. I didn't get to try the Shan Shan omurice, but I could tell it was really good since nothing was left uneaten on the cast iron skillet, and I was told by my dining companion that they would order it again. The BBQ ribeye toast started out well. The thinly sliced ribeye was tender and not overcooked. The scrambled eggs were smooth and creamy. Further into the toast, the very generously buttered bread got to be too oily. When removing our dishes, the server asked us how our food was, and I mentioned the oiliness of the toast. Cute and cozy brunch/cafe spot. There isn't a ton of seating so expect to wait a bit during busy hours. We always get the Iced Honeycomb Latte and Egg Sandwiches when we're here - 10/10 every time. The freshly baked goods always sell out, make sure to get them early if there's ones you want! You can also pre-order them online for in-store pickup. The buns were okay, a bit on the pricier side but otherwise nothing crazy that would make me want to grab them again. read more

Saw some select breads at The Village Grocer up in Markham and was enticed to try the sesame bread. It looked soft. Even at $5.75 we were willig to give it a try because Asian breads are usually soft and airy. When we got home and tried it we were quite disappointed. Though the best before date says 2/21 and we bought it on 2/17, it was dry and the black sesame flavor was barely detectable. Definitely NOT worth $5.75 and I can't even imagine what it might be like on the 21st! read more

Get on their waitlist when you are thinking of going or on the way! On a Saturday lunch time, the wait for a table for two was approximately one hour. We wanted to try some new items today so I ended up getting a lychee americano (decaf is available for this drink) and the special of the day, which was unagi omurice. Partner got the Taiwanese chicken sandwich and a mocha. The sandwich came very quickly but we had to wait quite a while for drinks and the rice came the latest. The chicken sandwich was alright. I prefer their ribeye or smoked salmon one. The chicken is more like popcorn chicken pieces rather than a chicken steak form but quite juicy and cooked well. The bread is always fluffy and delicious. My personal fave part of the sandwich is the egg! The unagi omurice portion was HUGE. They give you a whole giant filet of the eel and it lies on top of the omelette rice. The egg was done well. However the rice was a bit too over cooked and watery. Favourite of the day is the lychee Americano!! Lychee syrup at the bottom topped with espresso/water. After mixing, each sip there is coffee and a nice slightly sweet lychee aftertaste. Might be my second favourite drink after the matcha espresso!! The mocha was good but nothing special. read more
