Well well well, it's been hot, but we've still been hungry. For all you absolute sweaters out there, Koreans believe that you should be eating hot soup so you can cool yourself down!...Not sure what the science says, but screw it! We're gonna try. Tustin houses this restaurant, and it's coming in hot, being a relatively new establishment with a good amount of seating, and a cozy atmosphere. Before we got our food, though, we had to get the banchan! That's the side dishes, of which there are 9! That's gonna come in handy later. First, the bibimbap! It translates to mixed rice, and that's exactly what I did! I mixed that sucker up, cracking that egg, drizzling the sauce, and spooning it all into my mouth! Can't hate on that. It comes out on a sizzling hot stone bowl, so you get some of that crispy rice with every bite! Yum! And the sweet soy pork, or dweji bulbaek! Similar to beef bulgogi, the pork is marinated in the same sauce, and cooked the same way! Great addition to combo with the tofu soups that we got. It's hot, toasty, and got plenty of that sesame flavor that we love so much. And we had to match, because both of us chose kimchi soondubu as our soup, and it was perfect. Medium was a good amount of spice, and spicy was no joke! Great amount of spice coming out of both of these bowls, and the kimchi flavoring was awesome! Welcomed acidity and fermented taste pervading through the whole soup. Best enjoyed with some rice, of course! I found this place through a friend, and now that I'm writing this review, my mouth is watering all over again. I checked the Yelp reviews before coming, and they were amazing. The food also looked so clean and delicious in the photos, so I decided to stop by for lunch. Since I came a little after the usual lunch rush, there were plenty of tables available and I was seated right away. The restaurant was very clean, and I really liked the simple, neat interior. I ordered the Mackerel Soft Tofu Soup combo, and shortly after, a complimentary salad and mushroom soup came out before the meal. I've honestly never been to a restaurant that serves a salad before the meal like this, and I thought it was such a nice touch! And the mushroom soup was SO good. I finished my soup completely, and the server came over and asked if I wanted a refill. I had to politely say no because I still had my mackerel and soft tofu soup coming, and I knew I needed to save room. Then came nine different side dishes, and every single one was delicious. I wish I had taken a picture of all the empty dishes afterward because that would have told the whole story! The side dishes are refillable, so you can simply ask your server if you'd like more. Then the soft tofu soup arrived. The moment I took my first bite, I literally thought, WOW! As a Korean, I've been to more Korean soft tofu restaurants than I can count, and I can honestly say this was one of the best soft tofu soups I've ever had. I ordered the Medium Spicy Beef Soft Tofu, and it was absolutely delicious. I already feel like I'll be coming back soon, and when I do, I'm ordering the exact same thing again. The soft tofu soup was so good that I barely touched the mackerel and ended up taking most of it home. That says a lot! There were so many little things I loved about this restaurant. First: They serve a complimentary salad and soup before the meal, and both were actually delicious--not just something they give you as an afterthought. Second: They have little spoon and chopstick rests at the table! In Korean culture, placing utensils on a proper rest is a small but thoughtful detail that feels very respectful and welcoming. I really appreciated seeing that here. Third: The corners of the tables have safety protectors. Such a small detail, but I noticed it and thought it was very thoughtful. Fourth: The side dishes are served individually rather than in one shared dish. I really liked this, especially when dining with other people, because everyone can enjoy their own portion. The servers were also incredibly kind and attentive, and of course, the food was fantastic. Since the restaurant is located inside a mall, parking was also very easy, which is always a plus. Love 9 Dish Tofu House! One of my favorite things about this place is how they give you mini banchans (side dishes). The portions are perfect for getting to taste a little bit of everything, and if you want more of any of the side dishes, they're happy to refill them! I ordered the yellow croaker combo in the regular size, and I was honestly surprised by how big the fish was lol. It was so good -- crispy on the outside with so much meat inside. The tofu soup is always delicious too! The service here is also really good. I wanna first start off with, be patient! This is a small restaurant and the waitlist can be inconsistant because Korean people tend to take their time with their meal. This means that the tables won't rotate out as well but that is Korean culture. After waiting for around 45 minutes, me and my mom finally sat down and ordered the two combos, one with Spicy Raw Crab and the Mackerel. The food itself came out quickly. They actually start you off with a small salad and mushroom soup which is perfect to set your stomach up. The Soft Tofu was delicious and flavorful with their housemade Kimchi making the whole pot. Their Mackerel was cooked to perfection, I legit ate all of it. The Spicy Raw Crab was not fishy at all and was super flavorful with each bite. Everything feels thoughtful, elevated & traditional at the same time, from the salad & soup (tastes like clam chowder) they serve to start, to all the varied banchan they serve on a wooden tray with your entree. Real crab in the sundubu & the sundubu was more flavorful than most places without tasting like they use MSG! The galbi was tender & delicious, not too sweet & came on a bed of grilled onions & I love that it was the perfect temperature (somehow they keep everything from charring too much). It just feels like they put extra care into every detail, like the heart shaped watermelon in the salad, the chowder soup, the little chopstick holder, steamed egg & kimchi bindaedduk (pancake) that come with the banchan. It was delightful for all the senses, a feast for the eyes & tummy! It cost ~$29 for the Small Galbi combo with sundubu, I think it costs like $32 for the Large. Finally, the server was so pleasant, cheerful & kind & excellent! A smile goes a long way! The only things that could make me love this place more is if they had oyster sundubu & purple rice. They don't have fish for appetizer but they have several fish entrees including mackerel & yellow croaker, & they even have a marinated crab entree which is special because not a lot of places have it. The bulgogi was marinated well, and the mushroom soondubu was comforting and flavorful as well too. However, the highlight for me was the quality of the side dishes! Each one was so different, and several of them were unique - not ones I normally see as a side dish at a soondubu restaurant. My favorites were the cold tofu, potato salad, and tteokboki. Definitely coming back for the ban chan/sides! Located in the Gen and 7 Leaves plaza. It's a smaller restaurant and was getting busy around noon/lunch time. Their sides are definitely the highlight because they're so unique from the typical ones you see, but also soo good with free refills. I got the LA galbi combo which came with a small tofu soup. I liked how they have a small and regular option for their combos. The small was $28.99 and the large was $34.99. The tofu soup and galbi tasted a little different but still good! The main dishes were amazing! Love the presentation, it was sleek and organized and just the right size. Having a variety of side dishes will always be a plus for Korean restaurants. It did take just a bit of time, but that's expected for a restaurant that just opened. The soup is salty and had a lot more beef than I expected. The galbi is a generous serving size, maybe just a bit too many onions on the bottom. Love love loved the bibimbap, this was the first one in a while that I could actually taste the individual flavors of the vegetables and be yummy. I thought the side dishes would be the star but I thought in terms of taste they were pretty standard. I love chive pancakes, but them being cold made them taste a bit oily. I didn't get to try the tofu soup because I ordered the spicy raw crab and was obsessed!!! They provided gloves so I also wouldn't get my hands dirty. Even though there isn't a kids menu, the staff is ultra accommodating to children and this is something I really value when eating at a restaurant. What's amazing ARE the 9 dishes of banchan that come with your order! I've tried their spicy bulgogi once and also their beef soup, spicy level. All are great options for me because I can eat a lot. I eat a lot so I'd go with the spicy pork bulgogi again, but they will refill the banchan anytime. Had the Yellow Croaker combo which came with a small tofu soup of your choice and your own banchans; yes, I said it, everyone get their own set of banchans - no hogging needed! Since their banchans are made fresh each day, the selections are rotated which definitely promote freshness in all of their dishes. Pre-meal you are served a mini cream of mushroom (yum!) and a mini salad; then came the main dishes. My croaker was fresh, crispy outside and juicy inside and my tofu soup was so flavorful! Staffs and services were friendly and fast. Restaurant is small and can get busy quick so plan accordingly. If you're coming with a large party, be prepare to wait but it is definitely worth it!
