Came here for dinner after doing grocery shopping next door. There was a bit of a wait but it wasn't too bad. One seated, banchan was brought out quickly with some hot tea, without me even asking. I got the mixed tofu soup. It came with beef and some seafood. It was a bit salty but not too bad. Rice is super chewy and banchan was also very good. I really like the braised tofu and the fish cakes. They were busy with the larger parties but when requested more banchan, it was quickly refilled. Service was good considering how busy they were. Came here for the first time, and I'm not a big fan of this Korean restaurant. We ordered the special jokbal salad, tofu soup, and the LA short rib combo. The short ribs were good and had great flavor. However, the tofu soup was extremely salty and honestly tasted like salt water. There also wasn't anything particularly special about the salad, and the jokbal was very tough. As for the side dishes, the fish was very cold and tasted old, like it had been sitting out for quite some time. The only side dishes we really enjoyed were the kimchi and cucumber kimchi. Overall, the meal just didn't live up to our expectations, and unfortunately, we probably wouldn't come back. read more

You know sometimes with highly rated up and coming Asian restaurants, I get a little skeptical of the authenticity of the dishes. Like for me, there's a prime difference in expectations with Din Tai Fung and Kei Concept restaurants vs your typical mom and pop business. Yet as someone who has had soondobu throughout the years, of all different variations, I can say that this one of my most favorites that I've tasted. And I could already tell from the moment I entered. Although the establishment looks modern, it has a traditional feel, with wooden tables, flat chopsticks, and the friendly but bustling Korean auntie waitresses who eagerly refilled the banchan at our table. The soondobu came out pipping high and I had to wait a little so I didn't burn my mouth. But with the first bites, I experienced a warm, comforting flavor with its deeply rich broth and silken tofu. Pair this meal with the marinated fish cake, fried fish, and japchae noodles and you have absolute perfection. I'll be returning soon for another meal~ (And yes that definitely beats BCD in terms of taste, cost, and wait time.) read more

We ordered one combination since he wanted the galbi and I wanted the soup but it was enough for the both of us. Thank god the servers weren't judging. It's Tofu has become one of my regular dinner spots with family or friends, and it is an easy place to keep coming back to. The food is consistently solid, the banchan is a standout, and the whole experience always feels fun and easy. I ordered takeout from this spot and it was delicious! I had the dumpling tofu soup with the galbi. The soup had great flavor and was the perfect amount of spice for me. There was lots of people waiting outside when we got there but we waited about 15 minutes for 2 ppl. We immediately got the menu & someone was there to take our order within the first 5 mins. Lots of options on the menu, including all the classics like seafood pancake, cold noodles & spicy raw crab. We ordered the galbi & tofu soup combo ($37.95) and a side of steamed egg (~$11). This was a perfect amount for 2 people to share. The galbi was delicious, cooked well & wasn't chewy. The flavor was delicious & I felt like it was a good meat/bone portion. We got the mixed tofu soup and it contained beef + variety of seafood. The soup was not as flavorful as I expected; we got the medium spice but it was not very spicy at all. My fiance said he prefers BCD's tofu soup but the galbi here was better. The steamed egg was cooked to perfection, very fluffy & had roe on top with added a nice umami flavor. It's all refillable as long as everyone orders a dish. But R.I.P. to the delicious pajeon they used to include as banchan. On to the stars! First, the tofu soup is served sizzling and hot enough to fog your glasses, but what stands out is the depth of flavor. My favorites are the wild sesame with its earthy, nutty taste (get it no spice for the full experience) and the oyster seaweed with its silky seaweed and tender oyster combo. Their hot stone pot bimbimbaps also always satisfies, packed with a ton of generously seasoned vegetables, the aroma of sesame oil, and your choice of protein like Bulgogi, Spicy Baby Octopus, and Gondre. I love the Gondre because the thick, mountain greens are hearty and delicious, and instead of gochujang, they use an addictive salty chili sauce. Special shout-out to their Naengmyeong (cold vinegar noodles) and L.A. Galbi (sweet and savory bone-in short ribs), which are both drool-worthy. The Naengmyeong here has nice thin, chewy noodles with a clean tang for a crazy refreshing punch. And the L.A. Galbi is so flavorful, chewy and tender and balances the sweet and savory notes beautifully. Service is quick, portions are generous, and while the prices are the mid-high range, you get enough food to share or to have delicious leftovers. The real problem is deciding on which dish to get! There is a decent amount of Korean food in Irvine and there is definitely competition in the soondubu realm. It can get busy during the normal lunch/dinner hours, and inside can get pretty lively. There's a decent amount of seating, interior decorations are pretty nice, and the service was solid. Starting with the banchan, I enjoy the spicy fishcake, japchae, and kimchi. I like how there is a unique assortment of banchan here. I normally order the Kimchi Beef soondubu and it hits the spot for me - spice level is perfect, strong flavor, tofu and beef is good. We usually order seafood pancake, short ribs, and stone plate bibimbap as well. The portions are large and you definitely get bang for your buck. We love sharing these three items - the seafood pancake has a lot of seafood and green onion and is thick. Short ribs are marinated and cooked well, while the bibimbap is a solid option if you don't want soondubu. I will definitely be coming back here and would like to introduce my friends to this place as well. Hands down, the only kids meal I'd get for my kid here is basically an adult meal in a mini size--and honestly, that's perfect. The food is your typical tofu spot fare, but they've got oyster and seaweed options that you just don't see anywhere else, which makes it kind of special. Sides are a little slim, and asking for a refill can get the server a tiny bit annoyed--but the waitresses are super nice to kids, so that balances out. Used to be a long wait, but now you can put your name on the waitlist and get seated faster, which is a game-changer. I love that the sides are fresh--the bean sprouts are my absolute favorite.
