I went with all the reviews on Yelp for this one and I was sort of disappointed. I didn't realize before I went that 75 is owned by the same people who run Cheers, which would have explained a lot. I thought I'd be getting a more unique experience. Instead I felt like I was at a smaller version of Joe's American Bar and Grill -- with not nearly enough booths! I did really like the tortellini with pesto and chicken, but I wasn't so into my steak, which was small and pretty well covered with sauce and fat. Not worth the $20. Maybe I'll just try sitting at the bar one day. read more

We came here as we were walking past on a cold Monday night, I'm very glad we did it was great. The restaurant is so cosy and quaint, great to go with the family or a romantic little hideaway with your other half. My husband had the seafood stew and loved every bit of it, he said each individual piece had been cooked to perfection. I had the vegetarian burger and it was so-so, I don't normally go for the veggie option I just happened to on that night, it could have done with more seasoning if I'm totally honest, the fries were tasty though. Why 75, you're not as stuffy as you were 2 years ago. What happened? Don't get me wrong, I like the new you...but its just so surprising. Mostly patroned by yuppies rather than the 50+ crowd, the food is good and not too expensive either. The crabcakes are pretty tasty and the help-yourself to cheese platter in the center is pretty welcoming. The best seat in the house has to be at the bar. For such a small restaurant, they definitely know how to squeeze 'em in. Way to go 75. So proud of you for stepping out of your comfort zone and adding that tv in. Now, we can sit and watch the Pats play and eat my cake (crab) too. read more

What an outstanding place. It feels like you're dining in a big family dining room at 75 Chestnut. The restaurant and bar are the perfect place for a date, family dinner or just a meal with friends. And oh yeah, it's in Beacon Hill - one of the coolest neighborhoods in the country. Free cheese and crackers at the door is an great touch. I've been a few times now and really appreciate that they take reservations - it makes things incredibly easy. I really wish they used OpenTable rather than the phone, though. I had the filet one time ($25 sounds like a bargain, but it's not the best cut of meat) and wouldn't get it again. During my second visit I had the beef stew and it's by far the best beef stew I've ever had. In fact, it's one of the best meals I've had, period. The service is great and runs at the perfect pace. This is a beautiful restaurant with wonderful service and atmosphere. I went about a year ago with some friends on a weekday night, we were treated like we were the only customers they had though there were quite a few tables filled. That aside, my meal was really dissapointing. I ordered the special that night, which I figured to be an adventurous choice at such a lauded place. My fish was so bland, though monk fish can be tricky, it both looked and tasted like styrofoam. The tempura white beans were fine, a fun and unexpected idea, but just fine. My friends felt similarly, our meals looked and sounded like a treat but definitely didn't taste that way. read more

I had dinner at 75 Chestnut with my best friend and former Beacon Hill resident, so she is seasoned in this neighborhood's restaurants and loves this one in particular. We had a cocktail with St. Germaine and pineapple juice, which was strong and great. I had the lobster sliders with fries, and she had the tenderloin tips. Both were delicious, but hers was better. They were perfectly cooked medium rare and extremely flavorful. We had the brownie with ice cream for dessert, which was good, but not anything amazing. I am moving to Beacon Hill for this very restaurant. Yes, I know the cost of living in Beacon Hill. Don't care! It will be my summer condo. This place is absolutely charming which fits nicely within the surrounding neighborhood. They actually had free cheese and crackers this evening. Not exactly what I expected in this neighborhood. The wine selection was sufficient to enjoy a nice glass (or two). What I loved, it had a great class of locals who were not stuck up. Even the women of three generations (each wearing Burberry winter coats) sitting next to us openly engaged in conversation. We didn't have food, but it looks amazing. I see me eating four meals a week here (once I move to the neighborhood). I was here with a good Bostonian friend on an evening with snow flurries. With the gas lamps that line the street, the holiday lights everywhere, and snow flurries; it was romantic and made me actually love winter. That has never happened in my life! Seeing three TVs on the wall was not what I expected when I walked into 75 Chestnut. Situation on a residential street, and from their website, I expected a a cozier place I guess, rather than the full bar and baseball game on TV. The food was good, probably deserving of 4 stars. Service was decent, which is what brought the rating down to 3 stars (as well as parking...). The server dropped something on me, and while she did apologize profusely, she said she'd get me something to wipe it up and not only didn't immediately come back with it (she served another table first), I had to ask her for another napkin before she remembered, and apologized again. The calimari was good, the filet mignon was much better, my girlfriend enjoyed the BLT wedge salad and her pasta. Nothing special, especially for the price. read more

My boyfriend and I had our first "real date" here back when it was a cozy, romantic restaurant serving entrees in the $25 range. It was very nice although a bit stuffy. He and I went back another time shortly after and had drinks at the bar. It was perfect. It felt like the bar was a separate place from the restaurant. I will always remember that night. Well, I went back last week for an event (Hello Stiletto party) and it's totally changed. Now they serve burgers and they tore down the wall separating the bar area. It's basically a new place. I still liked it though. My friend and I just had appetizers (mussels and a shrimp app) and drinks which were quite good. And, the people working here were so nice. Our server was attentive and friendly. And the woman we spoke to (who I'm assuming was the owner) went out of her way to make everything lovely. It's not the same 75 Chastnut that I recall but it's still worth a visit! read more

I had a great Easter lunch at 75 Chestnut. I had always wanted to go and my boyfriend knew I had never been so picked it for Easter. We arrived 10 minutes before our reservation but were seated immediately. The place was packed. Upon seating came yummy hot gooey cinnamon rolls placed on the table. They were so good. We started off with some calamari. It was excellent. Crispy and flavorful. The portion size could have been larger though. The tarter sauce on the side was one of the best I've tried. I got a side Caesar salad before my entree. It was very good. The dressing was light with an anchovy kick. They were generous on the home made croutons. The amount of shredded parmesan on top could of been reduced. For my entree I got the Caprese linguine. It was excellent. The portion was generous. I had half of what was on the plate and took the rest home. I asked for some grated cheese. It would of been nice to have freshly grated on top of my entree but some arrived in a small ramekin instead. My boyfriend had the steak sandwich. It arrived open faced not looking like a sandwich. Then the server said that's how it was served when we asked. The lettuce and tomato on the side were strange when you couldn't really assemble it on the sandwich. The steak was cooked perfectly med-rare. The fries on the side were excellent. The make your own bloody mary station was great. They poured the Kettle One freely. We took a glance at the dessert menu but passed. There were some interesting choices like a creme brulees sampler and a chocolate trio. The service was good. Food arrived promptly, she checked up a few times and nicely got our coats at the end of the meal. The atmosphere was classy and romantic. I would love to go back again. read more

Like Tom E said, locale with identity crisis. Apparently, it used to be a really fancy restaurant, separated by a wall from a low key bar. Then they tore down the wall, put in one of those pub glass separators, lowered the prices: the result is this confused place. Looks like a pub, but serves expensive food... Has loungy soft leather booths, but the waitresses wear monogramed polos... And the cheap looking glass separator? Anyway - food was ok, but I'd say kind of forgetable. I guess, if lived right above this place, like the friend that took me there, I'd go, but not worth extra effort. read more

I've done this place multiple times for Brunch and always loved it. This time however, I tried it out for dinner. We had a party of nine and had to wait awhile for our table to be ready. The free cheese and crackers made it bearable.. but it was sooo packed and we were smushed (and cold!) Who know it was such a hot spot? It's always moderately crowded at brunch. Once we were seated, everything was the way I had hoped for. The service was fantastic and I never had to ask twice for anything. They have a great wine selection - I really enjoyed the Malbec. The food was also really good. I liked (not loved) the calamari. My wedge salad was deeeeelicious, and I was also really happy with my seafood stew. It was too big, though! I barely ate half. I didn't have dessert, but I tried some of the chocolate creme brulee and it was amaaaaazing. I could have eaten a tub of it. Seriously. All in all, I really enjoyed my experience per usual. You definitely need to plan accordingly for dinner because it's loud and crowded. But other than that, it's still a great beacon hill spot! read more

I started this review with a 3-star rating, but the more I wrote I bumped it up to 4 and then brought it back down to a 3 again, but I think it just goes to show I was a bit underwhelmed by the whole experience, especially for the amount of money we paid - I really think that 3.5 stars would have been the best but I'll deal until yelp allows that option... The appetizers (the 75 Chestnut Tower and 5-alarm Chili) were both well liked. The Tower is a very interesting combination of food: calamari, artichoke ravioli, tabouli, and hummus. They did NOT give you enough pita crackers to enjoy the hummus though. My husband loved the chili and it came with two huge pieces of polenta. The entrees were good. My filet was tender, the potatoes were okay. My husband ordered the steak tips, my mother the salmon special, and my father the seafood stew. My father raved about his seafood stew the most. The desserts were probably my favorite part of the whole meal. I had the chocolate trilogy: creme brule, chocolate bread pudding, and an almond/milk chocolate "soup" (my least favorite). We also got the trilogy of creme brules that were amazing. Would I run back to this place for dinner the minute friends start debating where to go this Saturday? I have been going to 75 for the last 5 years, back to when it was an upscale French restaurant. At the time, I would have told you to get the escargot; now they have taken a more casual approach, in response to neighborhood surveys asking what type of restaurant Beacon Hill inhabitors wanted it to be. In my mind, 75 is the edible version of Beacon Hill / Charles Street charm...you literally cannot go wrong. In the summer it is a fun stop to have a drink or appetizer and watch part of whatever game that's on one of their TV's. In the fall and winter, it becomes a cozy and romantic date place. And by date place I mean with anyone - I have come with families, friends and boyfriends, and it always receives the same response. They change their menu seasonally which I appreciate - since we are forced to feel the extreme temperatures living in Boston, it is nice to have food that compliments :). I love their martini choices as well as the wines I have had, and they have a pretty strong and localized beer assortment. I've had the chowder and chili (separately), and both were good. But the Porterhouse Pork Chop and Steak au Poivre are probably my two favorite items on the menu. And the desserts I've tried have never, ever failed. I also love that this restaurant is a little more 'off the "beaten path' in not being situated right on Charles St - it makes it that much more unique. read more

Tired of crowds of tourists invading Charles St. every Sunday? Me too. 75 Chestnut is off the beaten path and (thankfully) escapes that scene. I came here yesterday to catch up with two girlfriends for brunch. I don't think you can top having a live jazz band playing soothing tunes while you're sipping mimosas and bloody marys. I chose the eggs benedict which was good, but the potatoes were a bit bland and the english muffin was very THICK. So I would say the food was average, but the laid back, Sunday atmosphere earns this place 4 stars. read more

Came here for a quick bite to eat the other day. Not too bad a place but average on the taste scale. We started with the hummus platter which seemed to lack some seasoning as well as the crab cake which was fairly good. We then had the clam chowder soup which was very good and followed it up with the pumpkin ravioli which was also good. The décor is nice and they have a fully stocked bar to wash all your worries away from the day. We came here for Saturday brunch and didn't have to wait for a table, and got to make our own giant, delicious bloody marys from the most selection of ingredients I've seen! I liked the jalepeno infused vodka, but would still recommend adding other flavors to give your bloody mary the right kind of kick! An excellent find. We're just visiting Boston and, having been to the tourist trap of the North End the previous night, wanted more of an authentic neighbourhood restaurant in a quieter atmosphere. 75 Chestnut certainly provided that. A place like this, relying on repeat, neighbourhood trade, wont survive if it isn't good and 75 Chestnut didn't disappoint. Service was excellent and the atmosphere a real plus (though the large TV (albeit with sound off) did distract a little from the atmosphere). The crab cakes were an excellent starter: not too large (an appetizer is after all, meant to whet the appetite, not sate it) and the both the steak au poivre and the beef tenderloin were excellent. I had the steamed mussels with chorizo for lunch. Every single mussel had been purged properly. The broth was delicious and the addition of chorizo gave it a spark you don't usually get with a dish like this. The service was attentive and accommodating. I like it! The drink specials were interesting and also delicious! There are several house infused liquors (like the jalepeno tequila I had in mine) and lots of fresh purees used in the cocktail recipes. Our service was super attentive. We had the 75 Chestnut Tower appetizer (sweet pea ravioli, calamari, and garlic bread) as well as the crème brulee. Calamari and garlic bread weren't anything wildly unique, but I was very impressed with the sweet pea ravioli and the cocktails! I'll be back to try the entrees. Brunch is nice, too, but doesn't thrill me here. There's a fun bloody mary bar available, although I usually stick with mimosas. there's a berry and cream cheese French toast. I would recommend ordering the syrup to be put on the side, though, or else it becomes a soggy mess. Eggs benedic is pretty good here, but whatever they use as an English muffin doesn't have little nooks and crannies, which are sorely missed when hollandaise sauce is involved! Complementary breakfast buns are brought to the table before your meal, which is a nice touch. read more

So glad I finally tried this place! We went here for a birthday dinner and started with the complimentary cheese, crackers, and hit soft pretzels and mustard. Then we ordered clam chowder and a salad before entrees. We split a bottle of red wine with dinner too. Both ordered specials - beef strogonoff and rouladen. We loved both and can't wait to come back again. We joined the 75 chestnut rewards program and received two complimentary mugs as well as a free appetizer the next time we go. Tuesday night cookie night was a disappointment. Only got one type of cookie (which was over baked and tiny) and the meal wasn't worth the price. Great atmosphere for a pre-drink and some cheese and crackers (free by the door when you walk in). My advice: Just grab a seat at the bar, have someone grab a plate of cheese and crackers and enjoy a few drinks before you dine or go out somewhere else. read more

AHHHHH-Mazing meal with my girlfriend. Stupendous wine selection and the grilled mahi mani served over lentils and fall vegetables was incredible. My friend ordered the pork chop which was a sizable portion and was just incredible. Our waitress was very attentive and the ambiance in the restaurant was beautiful on a chilly fall evening. As for the dessert, it left a little to be desired. We did the creme brulée trio and the chocolate and traditional were great, the passion fruit was a little too runny and a little too sweet. Quaint, charming, cozy and cute were the first words I thought of to describe this neighborhood restaurant. You definitely need to make a reservation to be seated right away at 75 Chestnut (we had made a 730 reservation) and it was a good thing because it was packed! I ordered the fish and chips and the batter was nice and light and didn't over power the fish. For desert we got the sinful chocolate trio. It was sooo decedent. Everything is excellent. Every single time I eat here. Every single time. I live a couple of blocks away and have been here countless time and have never been disappointed. Everyone I bring here loves it and it's cozy, intimate atmosphere. Our favorite starter is the mussels, which comes as a very generous portion that is easy to share with many people. It has the best chorizo broth of any mussels I've had around the city. The chowder is also amazing and the Chili with polenta cornbread is great on a cold winter night. The tower is also a great option for a group. I'm not a huge fan of their crab cakes. We've had a number of their salads and they've always been solid, my favorite being the wedge salad. I almost always eat off their specials menu and it never disappoints. Every time they offer any lamb dish, I have to get it. Other go to highlight are the seafood stew, pumpkin ravioli, lemon chicken, fish & chips, steak tips and pork chop. If you're in the mood for a burger, skip the lamb burger and go with their regular burger. Everything I've had here has been cooked to perfection and seasoned just right. When we can find room for desert, it's hard to go wrong. Though our absolute favorite remains the Creme brûlée. The drinks are good, I almost always have a Manhattan and my wife usually orders one of their seasonal cocktails and has had good luck with them. She says their sangria is always great as well. It's best to get reservations because it's a small place and it's busy most nights of the week but it's a great place that keeps me coming back time and time again. read more

Love this place, it has a lot of special memories for me. We came here to celebrate getting engaged! The place is small and cozy with a rich, comfortable (but nice) atmosphere. Delightful little cozy place hidden in side the maze of Back Bay. The atmosphere can be fancy but the meals aren't so bad ($8 - $20 depending on what you get). Tuesdays are judge a cookie day! So free cookies and you get to fill out a survey sheet. Recipe from each week may vary but worth a try! They have TV screens through out the bar area, which can be viewed from the regular dining area. But I wouldn't label it a 'sports bar' because it had a romantic sense. Food was good. I got the Marinated Tenderloin Tips, which was a little salty but awesome. The warm bread served before the meal was delicious but, served with limited butter!!! We needed to ask for more.
