Simple just like the name sounds! This place is a fast casual Vietnamese place in downtown Long Beach. It's definitely not the most authentic Vietnamese restaurant, I would say it hits the spot when you have a Vietnamese crazing. The food is good and the place is nice and clean. Perfect for a quick lunch! I have had pho's so many times before so I decided to try something new - garlic noodle it is. Ethel have many protein options and I chose shrimp. The food took less than 10 minutes. The place opens for lunch earlier than most restaurants. I think I went there around 10 am. The garlic noodle was exactly what I expected. Very garlicky and the shrimp were big. Very flavorful. It's greasy , but it is soooo good. I highly recommend it. Funny enough, I only just got around to trying the food here relatively recently (a few weeks ago), despite knowing for *ages* that they've had a pretty solid happy hour that, unusually these days, and extremely conveniently, includes weekend lunch (10-2) as well as the more traditional late afternoon (3-5) on weekdays. *Also* funny enough, I'm going to give a solid 5 star rating to a Pho place, despite, having now tried their pho, thinking it was just average. I would definitely come back, though - just not for pho, necessarily. The pho isn't even on the happy hour, anyway - it's just $2 off appetizers, which makes them totally reasonably-priced, BOGO on all tea/milk tea drinks, which is a great price if you want two tea drinks for yourself or you're with someone, and half off all alcohol, which in many cases brings alcohol prices down to extremely grocery store priced! Pretty solid beer list, too, including, when I was there, one great craft cider... for 3 bucks a glass! (Though I'm not sure how much their taplist rotates / if they always have the cider.) Anyway, I ordered at 12:15 (it's an order at the front and they'll bring you your food type place, which I kinda prefer - no waiting for the waiter to order, nor waiting for the check at the end.) Had a cider in front of my 4 minutes later, and food at 12:25, just fast enough that I believe it was cooked to order. And when I, later, got a second drink and asked for more chili oil, they arrived in like 2 minutes - they've got speed down, for sure. (Or at least they did the day I was there, a few weeks ago. ) The appetizer I tried, the vermicelli roll, was solid - and on happy hour, an extremely good price. The appetizer consists of 4 pretty big rolls of cold vermicelli noodles wrapped around great pork, well seasoned with lemongrass, then if you're me, dunked in chili oil. (It didn't need the chili oil to be tasty, but still, chili oil makes everything better.) Will almost certainly be back in the future, for more of those, and for other appetizers. The pho I tried, I'd give... a soft 4. I did like that they let you choose up to three proteins of your choice, mix-and-match style - I got beef brisket, flank, and fried tofu with mushrooms. Soup I got had a decent, but not *huge* amount of protein - as I should probably have guessed, the tofu and mushrooms were fine, but the beef was more flavorful, if I were getting pho again, I'd probably do 3 all beef next time. The noodles weren't terrible, but they were a bit floppy. Broth was also just ok, a little too sweet and a bit too thin. Meat was great though, you get a good total amount of food for the price, and importantly, they had a legit spread of high quality fresh garnishes, and good chili oil (adding chili oil liberally helped the flavor of the broth a bunch, though I would still maintain, I've had way better pho broth). So basically, I'd recommend, if you're looking for really good pho, maybe go somewhere else. If you're looking for great appetizers and great drinks (beer and soju-based cocktails) for great prices, though, and it happens to be during one of the happy hour times, definitely come here! (Honestly their appetizer and taplist prices are pretty darn reasonable even at full price, making the downright *un*reasonably good at happy hour price! Assuming they don't "fix" that soon. We weren't impressed. Let me tell you why: FOOD: - chicken & beef broth pho: 1/5 if you're looking for authentic pho, this ain't it. It lowkey tastes like they used packaged chicken and beef broth mixed together - there was none of the delicious subtleties of fish sauce or star anise, no rich mouthfeel that comes from properly made bone broth. We got the thin noodles and they came in clumps that refused to separate (which can happen if they were sitting there for a while aka not freshly cooked noodles). The "rare flank" was fully cooked when the bowl was brought to our table - again, not fresh. So disappointing, I didn't finish my bowl. - popcorn chicken: 2/5 if this was supposed to be a take on Taiwanese popcorn chicken, it's definitely a different take. Not very crispy, the coating was a thin layer of (maybe) cornstarch. It came with Sriracha mayo and without the sauce, the chicken itself was not something I'd eat. - egg rolls: 4/5 pretty good! Crispy, full of meat & veg. My favorite part of this side was the dipping sauce - tasted like fish sauce, sugar.. I started dipping the popcorn chicken in this bc it was so good - pork banh mi: 4/5 my personal favorite of everything we ordered. I docked a point bc it was so thick and the meat was solely concentrated on one side and the veggies on the other, so it takes 2 separate bites to get all the components (I might be being picky here lol). However, the meat was very tender and nicely flavored. Veggies could've been pickled a bit longer since they weren't very acidic. SERVICE: 2/5 - I came with my family from playing in tide pools, so we wanted to wash our hands before ordering food. When we asked a server for the restroom code, she wasn't very polite - she didn't even glance in our direction and said the code while walking away. It didn't seem like she was in the middle of something as she wasn't carrying anything, but who knows ‍ it just wasn't a good first impression. - Then, after we ordered our food and sat down, they forgot the banh mi and I had to ask for it after waiting ~20 min. Turns out something went wrong and they hadn't even started on it. Waited another ~10 min to receive it. NOTES: - When we came, they had no ice in their drinks machine (they had ice in the back, just not in the soda refill station), which we didn't mind but I know lots of people like ice with their drinks. Also, their soda was flat - I heard another group flag down a server to say the same thing. You'd think a place that looks so nice and has many good reviews would be on top of upkeep. We ended up buying drinks bc of that. - I noticed they had lots of vegetarian options for pho, egg rolls, banh mi fillings, etc. Perhaps this place caters more towards being vegetarian-friendly and having customizations. But here i am, about to as a regular to 123 Pho (out of convenience because i live 2 mins away from) I called in to order some to-go, specifically repeated myself 2-3 times extra-toasted bread (i hate soggy bread) and no jalapeno. The person who took the order even repeated himself with how i want it. This isn't the first time it has happened, i just thought previous time "ah it's ok they probably just missed it". The rice dish was probably my least favorite as its quite plain with no vegetables like im used to from the more traditional vietnamese restaurants I go to. I will have to credit i went there again just recently and my chicken in my vermicelli rolls were quite moist and to my surprise that the tofu mushroom was flavorful and savory. Do note your hands will be quite dirty if eating my hands with the sauce runny everywhere. The dipping sauces were again, on par. When in Long Beach, Pho. It was a chilly day in the LBC and a big hot bowl of pho sounded right. So, I stopped by 123 Pho located in the heart of DTLB. They have an extensive menu but I had my heart set on pho. The options for pho are extensive as well. With a bowl you get the choice of 3 fillings. I chose meatballs, tofu and shrimp. The shrimp is a little extra but well worth it. I will have to try more on the menu and other pho fillings next time. The bowl is rather large, very filling. It is served with bean sprouts and cilantro. Don't forget the hot sauce and fish sauce for taste. The broth was extremely flavorful, delicious, hot and comforting. It was enjoyable to eat there in their roomy dining area with large windows. Price not bad for what you get . Service was pleasant and cleanliness was on point. I will be back to try more. 123 Pho: A Cold Experience with a Side of Attitude (and Butt Crack) Key Points: * Cold, uninterested service from cashier * Wrong pho order brought, extra charges not corrected * Front facing staff was reportedly sick and vomiting * Lack of cleanliness and uncomfortable atmosphere * Disappointing pho and unhelpful management Before I begin, based on other reviews with similar experiences, we have to ask--Is the cashier the owner's daughter?! Do they care about the stomach-turning customer service? It was a chilly night, and I was trying to consume (pho). However the cashier, Carol, looked annoyed and very low energy--no greeting, nothing. She seemed like she didn't want to be there and that we had interrupted her doing something important. My partner and I exchanged looks and shrugged it off. I ordered the shrimp pho, egg rolls, and a lemonade, and ended up paying $39 just for that (we also ordered the glazed salmon, but the cashier made a mistake. See below). The table we sat at wasn't cleaned, and a drunk man sat next to us, fully showing his butt crack. From what I could tell, he wasn't a paying customer. But hey, the splendid vistas just add to the vibe at 123 Pho. When our pho arrived, to our surprise, we were brought the salmon and shrimp pho. When I informed the server, who acted like a manager, that we had ordered shrimp pho, he checked the ticket and brought us the correct pho a few minutes later. The thing is, if we ordered shrimp pho and didn't have any of the salmon and shrimp pho, why didn't he tell us we had paid extra and adjust the charge on our card? He was going to let us pay an extra $3! Sketch. After we finally received our correct pho, I realized that Carol didn't ask us for the broth base, which we wanted to be vegetable. After about 15 minutes, I asked one of the servers if my glazed salmon order had gone through. She checked with the kitchen, and to our surprise, Carol had made the mistake of ordering salmon and shrimp pho instead of shrimp pho and glazed salmon. She needed help correcting the mistake to return the $3 extra we had paid for her error. Again, the guy we thought was the manager didn't offer to correct the mistake when he learned firsthand of his employee's error. He asked if I wanted to place the order for glazed salmon, and of course, I said no. With the hairy butt crack vistas, the messed-up attitude of the cashier, and the lackluster, sketchy management, we knew it was time to wrap up. I approached one of the servers. I started saying, "I don't want to get anyone in trouble..." but before I could continue, she said that she regretted our experience, but that Carol had been vomiting all shift! Then why is she allowed to 1) work, and 2) work with food?! She also said that not everyone has the disposition or personality to work with customers, so 3) why is she working with customers?! She did bring in the manager/guy who served us our pho, indicating that maybe he could offer some goodwill and adjust our bill, comp us the egg rolls or simply make us feel heard. The guy gave the limpest apology, saying he regretted our experience but offered nothing else but a lackluster affect and words. To top it all off, the pho wasn't great either the noodles were stuck together, the broth was lacking in flavor and overwhelmed the dish proportions. Overall, this experience was a lesson in disappointment, mainly in the management. It's clear that the staff needs proper training, and the management should prioritize customer service and ensure their team is fit to work in a food environment. I've had 123 pho multiple times and it is amazing! The first time I had it, it was catered so it was just a bunch of baos. They were so flavorful I had to go back for more. The second time I went I got the shaken beef garlic noodles and the vermicelli rolls and baos. The vermicelli rolls surprised me I think I ended up liking them more than the baos and it's what has kept me coming back. I'm a big fan of garlic noodles so I enjoyed them as well, but not the star of the show. Service is fast too, definitely recommend!! read more

I've ordered via GrubHub, but you can also get 15% off if you dine in through the check in offer they have on Yelp. The garlic shrimp noodles have always been delicious with a great flavor and fresh shrimp. The pho has been okay; I get it out of convenience since it is so close to my apartment, but next time I'd probably drive more to Cambodia Town to explore other pho options.
