Came back because I was craving their shaken beef and their taro smoothie. My boyfriend tried their banh mi sandwich and we were contemplating on the protein, one of the workers even offered us to sample the pork because we weren't sure how it was cooked, which was very nice of her. Came here just before closing on a Wednesday night after a yoga session. My friend orders the pho and I ordered the garlic noodles with beef. I'm picky about my pho. They offered 2 types of noodles, so that's a plus. The broth was fine and they had plenty of scallions & onions. The dish that surprised me was the garlic beef with noodles. Ordering through their website is super easy, and my food was ready for pick up at the given time. I ordered my pho with tofu, mushrooms, and vegetables in a vegetarian broth. The broth was light yet savory, probably thanks to the mushrooms. There were plenty of toppings included on the side as well. It's in a prime location with ample indoor and outdoor seating, a parking garage nearby that offers 2 hours free, the ambiance is cool and modern, and the menu options are customizable and good quality. It's fast casual so there isn't a lot of interaction with staff but the service we received from the cashier was good. Something that could be improved is the flavor of the broth and texture of the chicken. I ordered veggie and chicken pho with thick noodles and chicken broth. My eyes delighted at the sight but my tastebuds weren't as happy. I can't quite put my finger on what is off about the broth but I can say the recipe could be spruced up a bit, and the chicken could be more tender. OK Pho in very modern surroundings in Downtown Long Beach. It is set-up like a fast food joint, where you order and pay at the front counter, are given a table tag and the food is delivered for you (there was no place to self-bus so assuming it is taken care of by the staff). Wanted to try a variety of things that appealed to me on the menu, but common sense won out over my stomach (this time) and just ordered their pho. For $13.85, you choose the type of rice noodle (wide or thin), up to 3 proteins, and meat or vegetarian broth...there is only one size. There is a self serve soda fountain with Coke products, and they will give you a full size glass if you just want water. The pho came out fast. It reminded me of a good food court pho version (i.e. the broth has not been cooking in beef bones for 12 hours). The broth was dark, not oily at all, and just lukewarm...but the right kind of spices, bouillon, flavoring was added to produce a tasty broth. It came with very fresh toppings, including thai basil, fresh bean sprouts, lime wedge, and jalapeno slices for heat and very thinly sliced white onion,. But because the soup wasn't hot, the basil didn't really have a chance to transfer it's flavor. The beef meatball wasn't good...initially I thought it was still frozen, but it had thawed...but small and dense and not much. The beef brisket was excellent, tender and plentiful. They did have tendon...couple of gelatinous chunks which was good...but they also gave me big chunks of fat from the brisket, which I had to pick out. They don't have tripe, but do have rare flank (but would be a problem since the soup wasn't hot enough to cook it). As for the noodles themselves...not much was given, and it had been slightly overcooked before added to the soup. I would stick with the thin rice noodles next time. There were plenty of servers and cooks, and all were pleasant to each other and to customers. The dining area is quite big, so there is plenty of places to sit and they have a large alcohol section with bar (unexpected in this kind of set-up). read more

Walking around downtown Long Beach on Labor Day, felt hungry and I had been craving a Banh Mi for a few days and 123 Pho fit the bill. Service was friendly, I asked some questions about the milk teas and was given good advice, meals were brought out quickly and all our needs were met. For the food: it was delicious, generous portions and reasonably priced. I had the Golden Milk Tea with boba, I should have asked about sweetness levels since it was much too sweet for my taste. That's on me, I drank it anyway and it went well with my food. Shared the fried pork and egg bao which was delicious 9/10. The dipping sauces were good and pork stuffed anything is a winner. Had the Banh Mi with sliced pork and was completely satisfied with that. It was a huge portion, loads of fresh veggies and thinly sliced pork. I really appreciated not having to gnaw at a fatty, gristly piece of meat. I was kicking myself for not asking for extra jalapeños, but I needn't have bothered, there were enough and they brought the spice, 10/10. Great spot, clean, modern interior and delicious food. I think the issue with gentrified Vietnamese restaurants is that they are not able to capture the nuances of what the food and culture has to offer. The menu has segregated its ingredients and this is in part because new-age restaurants prioritize customizability for customer compatibility so your satisfaction is dependent on what you order. This is easier to achieve when you choose everything for yourself. And this is not to say traditional Vietnamese restaurants do not do their own version of ingredient rearranging; it's just different for modern reasons. Aside from that, the pho is of course what you expect out of pho with the major parts completed at its minimum. It lacks the vigor of what makes a bowl of pho feel unique to its restaurant. I mean its food, and we ate it, but in order to challenge where these places belong in a city that has a high population of immigrants, how can you do it justice? This lack of personability is suited for the area it's located in. This results in a brown and muddled broth and overcooked homogenous proteins. It remains severed from what pho represents and presents to its eater an idea of pho within the mainstream consciousness. It can fix a craving, but its not meant for soul eating. And that's okay because newer restaurants do not promise to deliver a cultural product, but it stays in my mind as we watch the gentrification of Downtown, Long Beach solidify with places like this. Ironically, the best thing you can order is their garlic butter dishes topped with a shaken protein. They have that recipe on lock, do order shrimp over garlic noodles and maybe skip the pho. read more
