After going three times, it's time to review. This is a fantastic restaurant in Greekstown. The food is among the best Greek I've had. I love that it's a real Baltimore bar on the first floor and really no different than many cool local hangouts. Upstairs is dining and it's nice, not fancy. Every time I have gone in I'm surrounded by the Greek language, which I don't know, spoken by older gentleman who have populated the neighborhood for decades. That was my hint that I was in the right place Yesterday I got take out during COVID. We bought a feast. The best (no joke) lamb chops I've ever had. They are so tasty I want the leftovers with eggs in the morning. They come with sides like Horta (a Curley endive cooked like collapses sorta) Amd the traditional green beans in tomato sauce. The grilled octopus is extra good. One Greek salad they make will blow your mind. No lettuce, but onions, tomato, olives, huge chunks of feta, and the dressing of oregano, vinegar, Amd the best olive oil. See my pictures. This is a wonderful place. I really hope to come back and give Zorbas a 5 star review one day because I genuinely love Zorba's but the fact that it has gone downhill in recent years cannot be ignored. I've been coming to Zorba's for 20+ years and it's the first place I suggest people to try if they express interest in Greek food. This review is based on my last 4 in row visits. The service is just terrible - many nights there is only one person working the entire restaurant. One visit in particular the bartender, who also acted as host, waitress & busboy, was so weeded that she did not acknowledge us at the bar for over 15 minutes. When she finally did, she couldn't find our reservation but told us she'd seat us soon. 15 more minutes pass, as no point did she ask us for a drink order or offer us water. - while we're sitting at the bar for 30 minutes now. And that's just one example. Service needs help. Food- is delicious, truly, which is why I hope they fix the issues so I can come back. But my last visit I ordered a spanakopita and noticed multiple "hairs" all throughout it, after already started to eat. After finding 7!! In total we learned that I was finding several strands of pastry brush. It was so unsanitary and offputting and who know how many pieces of plastic I accidentally ate before realizing! Ambience - I love a divey place but let's be real it's become dirty. It hasn't been updated maybe ever. It's giving "old and grimey". It needs some major cleaning and updating. There is so much potential but no one is putting the work into it. Every time I come in I notice that the dirty baseboards are still uncleaned. The bar is falling apart. They don't even keep their liquor on the shelves anymore. After back to back terrible experiences, it will be a while before I give it another shot but I really really hope the owner takes note of this review and makes some positive changes, because I want to love Zorbas again. read more

We came here because of the great Yelp reviews, and they also happened to be open on Sunday. Yelp is normally a great resource that we frequently use, and it is rare that we are steered in the wrong direction. This was one of those rare cases. We expected and were looking forward to great Greek food. We really wanted gyros since we love the combination of the meat with the spices, cooked on a rotisserie. We know not many places use the traditional lamb, and since this place offered chicken or pork - that was fine. We ordered two pork gyros. We also ordered the appetizer of sliced zucchini, and a couple of beers. When we got our beers, mine tasted fine, but I am not really a beer expert. My partner started drinking his, and then he asked to look at my bottle. I didn't ask why. I later found out that his bottle had expired - it was past the date - and he could taste it. Considering that they have NO beer on tap, the fact that we got an expired bottle makes even less sense. He didn't tell me at the time because he didn't want to sour my experience at this place. We got our zucchini app - and although it was technically "sliced", they were huge, cross-wise slices - not really sliced in a normal way. They were hot, and we dug in. Salt. All I was thinking when I took my first bite is that they forgot to season the flour, or the zucchini - or anything. Bland was an understatement. Even with the accompanying lemon wedge, it was so bland that it seemed to be a mistake. All they had to do was sprinkle some salt when it came out of the deep fryer. It was disappointing, but when we added salt, it was better. Then our "gyro" stuffed pitas came out. At first glance they looked appetizing. Then we took a bite. There was nothing even vaguely resembling gyro meat in those pitas. We knew we ordered pork, but the chunks of "meat" in there didn't look or taste like any pork we have ever encountered. Hidden by the tzatziki sauce, there were pieces of meat that were so fatty, so flavorless, and so disgusting that I actually pulled them out of my pita and just ate some of the pita with the salad that was in there. We clearly left food on our plates because our waitress asked if we wanted to wrap it. I then told her that this wasn't a "gyro". She then said that they don't make lamb (we knew that - it wasn't on the menu), and that's why she asked if we wanted chicken or pork. She said they call it gyro because most people expect chunks of meat - not really gyro meat. In other words, they believe that most people have no clue, so they can throw whatever they want into a pita, and customers won't know any better. Sorry, but that's a pathetic excuse for what was served. Not all customers who are not Greek are that clueless. We're from NYC - we know what a gyro is SUPPOSED to be - and we expected it to be authentic - or at least CLOSE. Here is the official definition: A gyro or gyros[a] (Greek: , gyros [iros], literally 'turn') is a Greek dish made from meat cooked on a vertical rotisserie. Like shawarma and tacos al pastor, it is derived from the lamb-based doner kebab.[1][2] In Greece it is now most often pork, or chicken, while a mixture of beef and lamb is common in the U.S. and other countries. It is usually served wrapped or stuffed in a flatbread such as pita, with tomato, onion, tzatziki sauce, and sometimes french fries. When she offered "pork or chicken", we still presumed it would be gyro - and not some tourist-trap sandwich. I'll be honest - I love grilled shish-kababs of meat - almost any kind of meat - including pork. This was nothing like that. I was even considering that the pork might have been spoiled because of the gray color and weird texture. Thankfully I didn't eat enough to test that theory and get sick. After a lovely 4 day weekend vacation in Baltimore, we were expecting an authentic, enjoyable and great Greek meal. Unfortunately, it turned out the be one of the worst meals we have had in many, many years. Perhaps their other food is better. Perhaps they simply forgot to rotate their beer stock. Maybe the chef thought he salted the food. There is NO excuse for using one word on the menu, and then substituting a completely different product and making excuses when they are called out on it. Stopped in Zorba's which is next door to the Acropolis Restaurant for an early afternoon snack; ordered the fried eggplant app and a glass of Retsina which was very good. The eggplant was perfectly cooked and fried a delectable golden brown, while the breading was excellent it was slightly bland but with the addition of some salt it was perfect. The portion size was extremely large, I ended up giving at least half of it away to several people sitting next me. I wouldn't hesitate to stop by and try some of their entrees in the future as many of those items are open spit roasted and looked amazing. read more

We got tons of recommendations to come here from friends, and boy am I glad we did. For starters, the place was cute and the waitress was very nice. Before our food came, we got bread and that bread was out of this world. Personally, I usually don't even like bread but this was something else. We ordered lamb chops and a chicken gyro wrap (it was for 3 hungry people), and they were spectacular. The lamb chops were fully cooked, but still so tender and juicy. The chicken gyro wrap was so wholesome and fresh if it had been any fresher we would be in a farm! This is a sad review to write because I so wanted to have a better experience. Let me start with the positives - Zorba's is authentic and the food is solid. Portions are plentiful and everything you want out of a traditional Greek experience. On my most recent visit I got the spanakopita, saganaki, and the chicken souvlaki. The spanakopita was personally more spinach than I'd like but definitely still good. Describe it as a mound of spinach with a little bit of feta and a sheet of phyllo. The chicken souvlaki was so good and tender. Sauce was on point. What makes me give this place 2 starts is the service. I went two times, once with a big group and once with just me and a friend and both times I was so disappointed with the service. The time I went with a big group (10 ppl) the food took FOREVER. Our waitress was generally so confused every step of the way and never checked on us after giving us our food. She overcharged the table about $40 extra for food we didn't order. I personally had to recalculate every item myself in order to prove the overcharge. Even after that misstep, a 25% gratuity was added. At this point I was so over it that I didn't contest even though I should have. I figured this mess might have been due to the fact that we were a big party so I went back with a friend to give it a second chance. Again, very disappointed with service. Food took forever even though the place wasn't crowded, waitress was extremely inattentive. I wish I had a better experience because the food is good. Flew back on a plane today with a couple from Greece and they said this is the best Greek food in the area.

Not much too look at from the street view, but don't let that stop you from going inside. The food was soooo good. We were a party of 5, so tried most of the menu. The kontosouvli was amazing. I can not wait to have it again. They did a great job cooking the calamari, not chewy and not gooey! The spanakopita was prepared very well, just light in crunchy on the outside and perfectly spiced and balanced on the inside. When someone on the street says hi to you, you say hello back, and say, 'how are YOU doing' - because either your parents taught you give respect when you get respect - or your neighborhood did. NOW, ABOUT THE FOOD Zorba's is a local REAL Greek restaurant that has spectacular, authentic food. I swear if I were not in Baltimore, they were cooking the food in the Grecian countryside, with dried grapevines, and using extra virgin Greek olive oil. I would say TRY EVERYTHING. If you don't like lamb but love beef - TRY the lambchops. Tender, perfect, and plentiful, in one order. Homemade tsatziki sauce. I go there just for that. Fish - bronzini, broiled, on wood, need I say more? It was like it was plucked from the sea, and grilled today. So simple, so tasty with a little sea salt and lemon. Grilled octopus - tender, plentiful and perfect. FINALLY Given all of that, I would always go back - but its not for everyone. Our friends made a 7 pm reservation and thank God we had a table at this gaining momentum, popular Greek restaurant...traditional in simplicity, over the top in flavor. The food was fresh, the portions large and the service good. Packed with a full bar, with owner sitting at the end, a hustling server made our drinks and served our food...hot and perfect after we had time to enjoy a cocktail. Since the owner has been sick and not involved for the past year, food has slipped and prices have skyrocketed. Octopus went up $10 overnight!!!! That's a 55% increase folks!!!! Octopus is alway frozen, market prices don't change that much. The lamb chops went up as well and my last meal had 1 less chop (6 instead of 7). The roasted pork was too salty to eat and had to be sent back to the kitchen. This used to be a favorite place but it's not worth the drive anymore. When you think of Baltimore, a few things come to mind. Crabs. Old Bay. Crime. What doesn't come to mind is Greek food. And it should. Zorba's is definitely not as dirty as some other reviews seem to say. It's small, it's chandelier-free, but it's definitely a nice place to bring together a bunch of friends to have some beers and pig out. The octopus, as everyone else has been saying, is incredible. And there's a lot of it. It may seem pricey, but when they bring out a plate that's essentially a whole octopus cut up, you'll say it's worth it. The lamb chops were the best I've ever had, and that includes the $30 entree places I've been to in NYC. The fat was creamy and tasty and the meat was excellently cooked. I also recommend the pile 'o pork (I forgot the Greek name, just ask for the pile of pork), which you'll see slow-roasting through the window in the back of the restaurant. It was kind of like a Greek pulled pork and all kinds of delicious. Though the prices look high on first glance, a pack of hungry men ate very well for $15 a piece (tip included). Portions are sized to impress! My family and I are BIG eaters and we're pleasantly surprised with the amount of food on our plates- talk about bang for your buck! First of all, they give you a basket of bread that could feed an army of starving carb-lovers. Then, the octopus appetizer- thank goodness we only got one app to share amongst 4- was crispy and flavorful. The rock fish (of the day), pork souvlaki, and shrimp were tied favorites. Unfortunately, I got the lamb. Although 8 chops (for only $25!!) worth, I asked for medium rare but got a variety of temperatures (none actually what I asked for) from very well done and chewy to very RAW and chewy. I asked for the raw ones to be put back on the heat and they came back within seconds to just be a little less raw... I was too embarrassed to ask a second time so I took them home to be cooked in my own oven. We were very happy with how far our dollar went, but the place did not impress as high as we've read and heard about. This Greek spot is so authentic! We cannot wait to go back and have the grilled octopus, scallops and salads again. I sat at the bar while I was waiting on our pickup order and you can see the fresh seafood/proteins being grilled in the back. I ended up sitting next to delightful Greek gentlemen sitting at the bar who advised me what to get and drinks to try, I hope they are there the next time I go back! We also loved the dolmas, flan and chicken skewers. Ordered way too much food but it was all delicious the next day too. The octopus was fantastic and reasonably priced. However, the rest didn't impress. Lamb chops were thoroughly overcooked and not particularly flavorful- I've made better at home. I was excited to see that Zorba's had pork gyro on the menu, as pork gyro is the standard in Greece (not lamb/beef mixture served at 99% of American restaurants). However the pork could hardly be considered gyro. They were just huge pieces of chunks of the kontosouvli we also ordered. Rather disappointing. The kontosouvli was served with peas that were actually freezer burned. We also ordered a spanakopita. The spinach mixture itself was delicious but it had no filo on the bottom and maybe 2 layers on the top. I wouldn't consider this so much spanakopita as a spinach, leak and feta filling. Overall, I don't think Zorba's is as authentic as many reviewers have claimed here. The ambiance upstairs could also be greatly improved. It's windowless and sad. I'm still on the hunt for a restaurant that rivals Greek restaurants in Astoria, Queens and Chicago. read more

Messy bathrooms with no paper towels, and discarded restaurant paraphernalia stacked in all corners.
