The food was out of this world. So tasty. Everyone loved their meals. The snapper dish was amazing.

What can I say... I had a lot of expectations as this place has been open for a while, but I was a bit disappointed. We had to get an early reservation as they were fully booked at dinner time. The food was just okay: the appetizer with the plantain and fried calamari was okay, it lacked a little bit of dimension and was too acid forward (needed more salt to balance it). The main was the "olleta" which is a vegetarian meal; it wasn't exactly memorable. It has an incredible amount of olives and capers and not enough tofu/plaintain/mushrooms. It was also very acid forward and lacked layers/balance to the flavor. Lastly, we tried two desserts: the flan (I believe it was called quesillo) and the chocolate one. I LOVED the flan with the foam on top, and the chocolate one was towards the bitter side (which was pretty good) but I wouldn't get it again. The desserts were very overpriced for the size of it. Pricing was $130 per person, plus an optional $45 wine pairing, a mandatory 20% gratuity, and a 3% kitchen fee, so it's safe to say expectations were high. Food was mixed. The appetizer had a mustard-based sauce that was hard to enjoy, and the lobster salad second course wasn't great either. The lamb chop third course was actually very good, and dessert was solid. We also added the steak tartare with yucca, which was just okay. Service had a few issues. I made the reservation over the phone and wasn't told we'd be seated at the bar, but that's what the system had us down for. Our server also brought an appetizer we didn't order. Ambiance was generally nice and the dining area and table were clean. However, the bathroom was noticeably less clean, and it appeared there was only a single gender-neutral restroom available (for me, male), which created some inconvenience. Worst dining experience I have had in a long time! I don't even want to waste my time on them more than I have already so keeping it short: extremely small portions, very expensive (think half sliced red snapper for $53 and a lobster tail for $42), 20% automatic gratuity, and 3% automatic kitchen appreciation fee!! Food was honestly horrible and drinks were mid at best - a dive bar could make better drinks both taste and presentation wise! After spending $250 and leaving hungry, I feel like a total idiot for trusting the reviews here. Very disappointed in the food given how much we paid. The calamari appetizer was weirdly cold, not crispy, and dry to eat. The plantain did not pair well with it at all. The lamb was also extremely dry and didn't come with a decent side except for some chips... The steak was certainly the best part of the meal. Love this spot for a quick bite and some amazing drinks. We made it in for happy hour, and Alma has one of the best! The drinks are delicious, and the HH food offerings are great! I had the best experience at Alma Cocina Latina! I went for restaurant week and it absolutely did not disappoint. A beautiful atmosphere that already elevated the dining experience and every dish, from appetizer to entree to dessert, was incredible. The cod in my dish was cooked perfectly, buttery and tender and well seasoned. I was able to try my friend's dish as well which was a vegetarian entree with mushrooms and a crispy coconut rice and that was my favorite of all the dishes that night! It was sweet, tart, and salty. The yellow tail melted in my mouth. The Arroz con Chipi-Chipi reminded me of Paella. The Bienmasabe desert was tasty. Stopped in for the first day of restaurant week. As we passed behind the curtain we were transported to a tropical place! We even started speaking Spanish! They offer both the regular menu and the restaurant week options. We had some appetizers to start-my friends loved the squash/tangerine soup and the fried yucca and the tequenos with the guava sauce were to die for-I would love some for breakfast! I had the shrimp en mojito with a side of rice (def needed) and it was delectable. Two of my friends ordered the cod and loved it. I tasted the sauce and it was out of this world. Something is wrong in the kitchen at Alma. Very wrong. See, I believe all those glowing reviews from the early days. I am convinced the food here was once superlative. There must have been a change in the kitchen, or one spectacularly bad night on the night we were there. My complaint is that almost all of the dishes were unbalanced in one way or another. The mixed avocado salad basically had a pile of guacamole at the bottom, so that after you followed the instructions to mix it all up, what you got was greens slathered in goop. And that was just the best of the bad dishes. At least we could eat it. Inedible were the plantain orinoco - tiny plantain croutons that were too insubstantial to balance the heavily flavored sauce - and the scallop and coconut crudo - the delicate scallops blasted out of existence by the big glops of coconut sauce. We did enjoy the grilled oysters, and the tequenos were okay if you like doughy snacks. But these passable dishes in no way compensated for the huge disappointment of leaving hungry. Honestly, I went home and heated up a can of soup. How miserable. Somewhere I read that the menu had changed, and perhaps that is what happened. The two stars I gave are for vibe. We arrived and were instantly transported to a happy place. So sad it was short lived. read more

What a treat! First, the restaurant is beautiful. Seating is spacious and staff is friendly. Parking is right across at the Charles theater lot so no issues with city parking. We started off with two drinks and later a glass or white wine our server recommended. Honestly you can't go wrong with any of the drinks. I got the Sandia and it was delicious. We ordered a few things from the entire menu and it was all delicious save for a few exceptions. Mushroom Ceviche: fresh, delicious, tangy. Amazing. Such an exquisite take on ceviche and a fun way to prepare muchrooms. Mushroom mole: fantastic. The mushrooms take on a scallop texture, the mole sauce is savory and thick and the pumpkin seeds add a crunch and nutty flavor. Cauliflower: similar to a gochujang sauce but even better. Could be spicier but honestly perfect as is. Shrimp and for stew: I'm not sure how this is a stew as it was more or less seafood served in a sauce. The fish and shrimp were perfectly prepared but the sauce was on the salty side. Needed a wedge of lemon or some other acid. Still enjoyable though. Coconut dessert: the weakest item we tried. The foam was a weird texture and there was too much of it. The vanilla sauce was overpowering with rum flavor. The jelly and croutons and ice cream and cake under all that foam was nice but the other items made the dessert not that enjoyable. I would definitely want to try the other desserts! We came here for Baltimore restaurant week for dinner. We were a bit early but were promptly seated nonetheless. The decor and ambiance are lovely. It's definitely classy without being too pretentious. Service was quick and attentive. On to the food. Everything for restaurant week was priced at 55 per person (20 additional for a wine pairing) for 3 courses. I got the cauliflower nikkei, the moqueca, and the suspiro de limena. Everything was absolutely delicious. The mushroom nikkei might have been my least liked of the items I got, but that's only because I tried the tequenos my boyfriend got and instantly had a preference for that instead. The Moqueca was perfect, perfectly umami. I just wish there was a bit more rice with it. The dessert was also really good, with a light kick of acidity from the yuzu. My only complaint honestly was the portion sizing for the price. I was still hungry after we were done. With 2 sodas and tips, our total for two people was about 146. Fairly expensive. Our first food adventure in Baltimore and we could not have asked for more. The food was incredible, the service was top-notch, and the atmosphere was perfect. We arrived at 7pm for our reservation and were promptly seated. The room has plants everywhere and the music isn't too loud, so you can actually have conversations at the table. We decided to go vegetarian for this meal and ordered pretty much every vegetarian option on the menu except the tomato & peach salad. We were pleasantly surprised and delighted when the chef sent us the tomato & peach salad to complete the full vegetarian menu at the restaurant. I'm glad they did because that might have been our favorite dish. The combination of sauces, flavors, and textures was excellent. I'm not sure whether the cauliflower and tofu dish was prettier or tastier, because it scored highly on both fronts. We had two mushroom dishes and they could not have been more different. The ceviche really felt like seafood and the mole dish was well balanced and showed me another way to prepare mushrooms. Above all the service was excellent. Every staff member was friendly, our leftovers were boxed and labeled for us, and we received fresh dishes and silverware for each course. I was once again pleasantly surprised when we received the check. You receive superior quality for the price you pay at this establishment. I'll be 100% - I had my mouth ready for the Cauliflower Appetizer, but when I found out it wasn't being served anymore, I searched for the next closest thing, and was pleasantly surprised. For my first time having romanesco broccoli (tastes like a cross between traditional broccoli and cauliflower), I loved it! The crunchy consistency definitely made for the illusion of feeling full from a vegetable, something that would be a great go-to for Vegans/Vegetarians. The grilled oysters were BEYOND - give me 14 of them, seriously. Put these on the Happy Hour/Cocktail in droves of Half Dozens and I'm sold. I WILL be back. It was very flavorful and tangy from the pineapple. Good mix of tangy, sweet, and little bit of heat. Must get. Patacon salvaje: fried calamari over toston and avocado topping. It was also very flavorful and had great textures from the fried calamari to the crispy toston and the creamy avocado. 100% must get!! Entre coche y cubagua: scallop and coconut crudo. This dish reminded me of my trip to Thailand. It was citrusy and creamy from the coconut sorbet. This is a cold dish. It had great flavor but I was missing a texture element. Corbullon de peacado: cod, pan-seared pearl onions, capers, & biquinho peppers, red wine, olives, potato chips. This was a bit of a miss for me. I loved my experience! The restaurant is beautiful, lots of plants and it feels as if you are in a totally different city. Servers and hosts are warm and inviting. I started with the roasted oysters, which were good, although I was not a huge fan of the beurre blanc sauce, it was a bit too creamy for me. I also tried the cauliflower which was lightly fried with tofu in a sweet sauce. I preferred this starter but the sauce did get overwhelming. For my first course, I had the avocado mixed salad, which was so delightful. I loved the crunch from the crispy onion and the dressing was not overpowering. The salad went nicely with a paella inspired dish with mussels. The rice was accented with a savory pumpkin purée and fresh lime. I found the mussels to be a little fishy, but the rice was delectable. For dessert I had a chocolate tuile with sponge cake and chocolate sorbet. The flavors were rich but the dishes were not heavy, there was a lightness that I appreciated and I think it's due to the quality of the ingredients and preparation. Something has changed at Alma. Notably Chef David Zamudio is suing the owners. The entire menu is different from before. We got two apps to start this time octopus al olivo from their 1st course menu and it was bad at first bite but the more I ate it the better I liked it. The fried chicken was too breaded but I liked the sauce. The entree of small Cornish hen chicken and steak were pedestrian. The cook of the meat was great but somehow it tasted like tough nothing? I was so disappointed in the apps and entree but the carajillo and dessert of coconut cake was delightful. This is now become a place for drinks and dessert only. We sampled the tequeños, Iberian croquette, crudo, and steak tartar for appetizer. All were really yummy but the crudo and steak tartar were by far my favorite! We popped in here for a quick cocktail and snack while we were at the gallery around the corner. The space is absolutely gorgeous - it has an open floor plan and an entire wall of windows. I got the cocktail of the day, which came with a tree of rosemary anchored in the glass by tiny clothespins. A lot of thought was put into the presentation. And I couldn't tell you what was in it, but it was strong enough that I knocked over the glass after I'd had about half of it. We also had the Mexican street corn, which was warm and delightful. Alma Cocina Latina is a restaurant that needs to be on everyone's 'must try list'. I was pleasantly surprised during my dining experience and look forward to dining there again VERY soon. I initially made my reservations for an anniversary dinner for my boyfriend and I two days prior to going [although securing a reservation a week prior is advised]. I must say, it was a magical evening to remember. From the time we walked into the restaurant to the time we walked out we were awestruck. Walking in-we were greeted with soft Latin music that immediately transported us melodically to a different world. Service was exceptional from start to finish. The hostess greeted us and was prompt in getting us to our seats. The pictures of the location do it no justice- you'd simply have to experience the glamour of this location. Next to the hostess podium is the official entrance to the restaurant marked by beautiful curtains- once drawn back you will get a glimpse of what is housed behind them and the true experience begins. My boyfriend and I were escorted to our seats and our hostess, having made a note that it was an anniversary dinner, (which I added to the notes section when I made the initial reservation) came back to give us complimentary champagne to celebrate. Spencer, our server was very attentive and helped us peruse the menu while including his recommendations. Appetizers came out almost as soon as we ordered them. The dumplings had an array of flavors that exploded in our mouths- the taste intensified with each bite- dancing from smokey, to savory, to delicate. It was smoky from the bacon or perhaps barbecue- presentation was amazing. Kinda tasted like a sophisticated breakfast burrito in a dumpling. Chicken is smaller the size of my palm but worth every bite! The creamy sauce underneath is delicious mimic curry, chicken creamy texture chicken was very well seasoned fish came in a spiral flaky crust white meat in the middle. Presentation was beautiful. Alma Cocina is overall just a nice vibe with all the plants (very impressed with how big some of them are and I think they're all real!), exposed brick, lights, and big windows. I've actually been meaning to go back. The prices reflect that the restaurant is a little upscale but I didn't really mind because in general the food was... well balanced? (The steak was a tiny bit too salty but still cooked well and I enjoyed it anyways.) The drinks were good and the service was great!
