Located next to union station, this place can get extremely busy. There's limited parking unless you're down to pay $20-$40 for parking in the city in the lots. We came on a Sunday and thankfully parking is free on Sunday's so we were fortunate to be able to find street parking. The place was rather small since they sectioned off half of the restaurant for a private event but nothing was even set up on the other side to indicate that there's going to be an event happening. Seating is interesting since tables are extremely small and they have these uncomfortable stools to sit on in addition to the bench by the window. They have self serve ice, cold water, and hot water. However, there's no appropriate cup for the hot water, just the plastic provided. You order at the counter and it's self seating. We ordered the beef noodle soup and Lu rou fan. Both came out relatively fast. At first taste of the beef noodle soups broth, it was flavorful and tasty. However the beef was on the chewier side and as you continue eating the food, it becomes saltier and not as good. The same can be said for the lu rou fan dish as well. It becomes extremely salty after the first couple of bites. Considering it's a Chinese food place, you usually have sauces at the table to use. However, their sauces are rationed at the counter where food is served for pickup. They provide complimentary sauce per item but anything after the first one will cost you additional $0.50 each. Zoe Ma Ma is a fast casual joint that is the brainchild of a wholesome Taiwanese grandma. From the moment my friends recommended it, I was counting down the days until my visit so that I could have some delicious Taiwanese auntie cooking; my mistake was setting my expectations so high. Let's start with the positives -- the decor inside of the restaurant is really cute and kitschy, with earnest Chinese themes throughout, ranging from the plants and red colour to the Chinese newspapers inlaid into the dining tables. The menu, while small, had a lot of great classic Taiwanese/Chinese dishes, ranging from small plates, like bao and dumplings, to larger plates, like noodles and rice dishes. For context, we came really hungry an hour before closing on a Wednesday night, with the majority of the dining room in the back (larger tables) already closed off. Regardless, the staff were really welcoming and kind. I ended up going for the duck bao, dan dan mian, AND the Sichuan Braised Beef Noodle Soup, which ended up being way too much food for one person. My friends got some similar items as well as the CPR (chicken, potato, and rice) and the char siew bao. I'll go from good to bad: the dan dan mian was quite legit. It hit all of the correct flavours, the textures were good, and the dish was perfectly portioned. However, the general trend for the rest of the food was: dry, diluted flavours, and close to raw vegetables. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt since it was an hour before closing, but there really is no excuse for dry and flavourlessness to the point that I couldn't finish the food, which is one of the biggest taboos in Chinese culture. Taken altogether, I'm glad I tried it, but it really was a really disappointing first meal in Denver. If I were to come back, I'd only get the dan dan mian again. read more

I really like this spot near Union Station. It's right next door. The food is really good and very flavorful. They do add gratuity, FYI. And they do explain this, so you can find that in writing when you are there if it matters to you. The drink situation is limited, wish they could get some wine, even pre-bottled stuff. We love the Dan Dan Mian but have recently discovered the Lu Ro Fan. Dan Dan Mian has a bit of a kick and sits on a bed of noodles. The food is delicious and it's in a great location right by Union station. Staff is nice and food comes our relatively quick. There is plenty of seating indoors. There is a 15% service charge added to every meal to help give fair wages to employees. You can opt out but I never do because I feel bad for telling a staff member that I want to take the 15% charge off. If you pay with cash note that you will not get change. So so disappointed. I had read the COS gazette a review and found out it was in Boulder, which is a 2 hour drive. I thought I'd never eat at Zoe Ma Ma. So when we came through Denver today, I made sure this was our late lunch stop at their 2nd location. My first disappointment was that the cashier/food prep person did not speak English (only Spanish) and could not answer my question about the spice level. He also did not give me a receipt or tell me my total. My husband asked" do you know how much we paid?" Nope. Also, there was a sign saying they weren't taking cash. We ordered Dan Dan and Lu ro fan and I Thai tea. $30 ( I looked at my online bank account). Very sadly presented. Cashier pointed to Coke cooler indicating that the tea was serve yourself. Dan Dan had token amounts of bok choy, no scallions, large wedges of pickled radish and a to go container of sauce. I used the whole thing and it was salty, slight schezuan flavor, zero heat. The LRF was a bit more flavorful but not yummy. The places to sit indoors gave us a view of pots, pans, catering equip, a Christmas tree, 1/4 dirty red curtain A worker on his break was watching loud videos on his photo. There was a photo on the wall of the owners with Guy Fieri at the original location. Perhaps that was our mistake. There was no one really running the show at this Denver/ union station. Everything in the back third of the restaurant looked like it was just put back there because they needed to put stuff somewhere. The food was completely forgetable. My co-workers and I came here one day for lunch (a super easy walk if you're close to Union Station) and we were so happy we stopped in! Zoe Ma Ma is one of those places where you look at the menu and think "I'm going to have to come back at least a few times, I want ALL of this food!" In my opinion, they have the perfect amount of options. Enough variety to make the menu extra colorful, but not so many options that there's too much to choose from. When restaurants have menus like this, you know they've found what they're amazing at and they've perfected it. I got an order of the pork shumai and the roast duck wonton soup. The pork shumai were really good and I could probably have eaten two orders myself if they hadn't been for the table. The soup was heavenly. It tasted homemade in the absolute best way. The broth was delicate, but flavorful and there was more duck than I expected! The wontons were, of course, my favorite part. Went in for a $2.50 bottle of water that I took from the cooler and placed at the cashier desk. Then I read the sign that says they have proof that THEIR OWN customers are racist and gender biased, and therefore will be charged a 15% gratuity. I am neither racist or gender biased, but I'm expected to pay a 15% gratuity for a bottle of water that I brought to the counter all by myself. I queried the cashier about this Policy and he said he waive the 15%. I handed him a twenty dollar bill and he said he would have to go in the back for change. When he came back he only handed me paper money. When I asked where my change was he said they didn't have any coins. I asked how much more was I owed and he said 84 cents. So he let me off the hook for the 15% forced tip, or 38 cents, but was going to short change me 84 cents. We were in town for work and we had some time for food breaks while working on a project nearby, plus it was very convenient to where we were staying. Or in our case, we did takeout as we had to do a working lunch. They will give you a little buzzer to let you know your food is ready. Asian fusion menu looks good, from dumplings, baos, noodle bowls, rice options, and some specials of the day. For lunch, I just got a couple potstickers, the pearl meatballs, and the special they had for a pork belly bao. My coworker got some potstickers as well and a salad option they had. I like that you can order piece by piece as they price the item individually. It was all pretty good to me, flavorful and nicely pan fried up potsticker, good filling, dough was a little thick but I thought it was fine. Pork belly bao hit the spot. Pearl meatball is basically a meatball wrapped in rice, it was just ok, pretty straightforward, just dip it in some hot sauce, you will be good to go. Skip to 8 hours later for dinner, we were still working, so we were just like, let's just go back since it is right there. Shift change with staff, they didn't recognize me because I was still wearing the same clothes from lunch. Anyways, I did takeout again to finish up with work, I decided to try their noodle bowl...."Za Jiang Mian". It's egg noodles with ground pork and some veggies. You gotta mix it up good before you dive into it. It was pretty good, good flavor, a little spice, good sized serving, not sure about authenticity but I was cool with it. The winter storm had deterred most people from going out, which made it perfect for our dinner plans. We found street parking near Zoe Ma Ma, and it was completely empty inside. While waiting for my friends, I ordered a Dale's Pale Ale, the only beer they had at the time. When it came time to order dinner, I was pulled in so many different directions. Everything on the menu sounded good, but because it was cold outside, I thought a noodle soup would do the trick. I ended up getting the Sichuan Braised Beef Noodle. I'm perplexed by the low reviews of this place because the beef and noodles were phenomenal. Just from one experience, Zoe Ma Ma has become one of my favorite eateries in Denver. The location is pretty great, right outside Union Station, but unfortunately seating seems limited to a few rickety tables and chairs directly facing the kitchen and counter. In terms of the portions, we were very happy with the amount of food we got and it was the right amount for a light ish lunch. The highlights were definitely the pork buns, which tasted very homemade (in the best way, like your mom made them for you). The meat was well seasoned and the bun was nice and springy. Might come back and just order these as a snack! The Dan Dan Mian wasn't as flavorful, but the noodles were the perfect texture, so it was still a really solid dish. The potstickers and veggie dumplings were where the inconsistencies were a bit more apparent. The veggie dumplings fell apart as you picked them up, I think a combination of the skin being slightly overcooked and the vegetables just being very wet inside. The taste was alright, but definitely not something I'd want to order again. The potstickers were my second favorite, flavor-wise (after the buns), but some were overly charred and, while I usually love a good crisp shell, they did dry out the wrapper more than I wanted. Given my excitement, I was a little let down, but I think Zoe Ma Ma is a great option for buns and I saw lots of options on their menu that just aren't available elsewhere in the area. I'm definitely going back to try out some other items (especially the buns) and to support what seems like a great business.
