So glad to discover this hidden germ bakery store still insisting to use this authentic method of old dough leavening with overnight fermention, so its delicious exceptional steamed baos can deliver an unmatched depth of wheat aroma flavor with airy-yet-chewy substantial texture. My favours are their non-greasy pork and chicken steam baos. Once you have eaten these juicy baos using fresh meat under long fermentation hours at slow temperature, other ordinary steamed baos made of commercial yeast with frozen or much fatty meat would never satisfy your mouth again. Despite of self baking at home, i can't stop buying their fluppy and beautiful sponge cake in lesser oil and sugar without chemical agents. I can tell it is even more yummy than other ordinary Hong Kong paper cup cakes due to its excellent egg-rich fragrance with soft and chewy texture. Had a hard time finding this place because the name was just in Chinese and I didn't see "Zhao Mah" in English anywhere. It was the only one open in that corner of the street when I got there though so I figured this was it. I am still confused why this place is called Zhao Mah. Had a hard time finding it. Maybe should be Kam Fung or Jin Feng. Anyways I was genuinely surprised by the prices and sizes of the buns. $1.80 for most things (compared to others which are $2+ now). And the buns are twice the size! I wouldn't say they are the best tasting canto buns but they are much better than average which makes it well worth it. I would like the bread to be softer. The bbq pork bolo bun was really good. I've been coming here for years. It's probably the last small family-run bakery in Chinatown (the few others around the area are chains or larger operations). There's a few items you can get here that you don't typically find in many other Chinese bakeries such as their tiny cookies, fresh steamed rice rolls (choice of beef or pork), and steamed pork dumplings. The dumplings are made the traditional home-style way with a nice thick mochi-like skin. They remind me of what I used to eat as a kid at home. read more

I was told that this place had was the best Lao Po Bing. After traveling around to and from Canada and the US, I finally arrived in Vancouver BC. We drove Chinatown to look for this place and slowly drove by it twice. We were just about to give up and then I barely spotted the place. Their signs and awning were worn so badly that I couldn't read anything. Place is very small near the east corner of the block. Now mind you, I am comparing this to the Lao Po Bing that I had in Montreal at Delicieux. See my review. Since then, I been searching for one similar Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and any other places that people have told me. So far it has been disappointing. Well, after I got back to our apartment, we cut into the Bing and I was excited to try it. The Bing was slightly smaller but much bigger than those in Las Vegas and Los Angeles. The crust is softer and and thin and not flaky. The filling is also generous and slightly sweet. But missing the winter melon crunch. I believe some people will like this version but I would have to say that for my taste, this Lao Po Bing is close but not as good as the one in Montreal. I hope others that get the chance can do the same comparison and let me know how they feel. As with all taste, it is subjective. But I like the soft crunch of winter melon. read more

Freshly made buns and other baked traditional Chinese goodies at a super affordable price. One of the few traditional Chinese bakeries left before Chinatown is completely industrialized and succumbs to gentrification. There are delicious goodies from BBQ and pineapple buns to almond cookies to steamed dumplings to delicious rolled cakes. It is a rather small store and easy to miss but definitely would give it a try if you pass by Chinatown. Kind & helpful service too :) read more

I have passed this tiny bakery for years until recently. They had all the usual yummy Asian baked goods. I bought a 6 pack of the plain buns which were very soft and tasty. Most of their stuff is cheaper than the other more popular bakeries. Make sure you show up early as there will be more choices. I was there after 3 pm and most of the stuff were gone. The owner tempted me to buy the Chinese "small chicken" cookies which were homemade. I bought a couple but wasn't for my taste buds. Note: cash only. read more

We purchased over 40 pork buns from them and they overcharged us by $30 USD! we tried to explain to them the issue but they pretended to not know any English. they did the classic, I don't know English excuse. The lady even pretended we didn't give her that amount of cash. she said we only gave her $120... It's very disgusting to know that they run their business this way. I'm the person that wouldn't mind purchasing more to help a old and pop shop but they run their business very dishonestly. I would never come back here again and I warn others not to come here. we purchased over $150 USD worth of buns and they treated us this way. It's just disgusting and unacceptable. read more

Very good bakery. This is personally one of my favorites in all of town. With freshly baked goods from $1.40. Sometimes if you come while they are closing you can get a bag of 3 or 4 pastries for $3.00. But even at $1.40/bun you are really still getting some baked goodness for not that much money. I really enjoy their BBQ buns and pineapple buns. You can even get BBQ pineapple buns! But really you have to try their old school custard filled pineapple buns. Those are really good here. They also have steamed chicken buns in a small steamer across from the cash registers. Cash only. Very good service. Tiny bakery in Vancouver's Chinatown. Takes up about a half of a regular store space. Despite skepticism about the smallness of this place, I decided to give this spot a try. Zhao Mah has a typical selection of Chinese baked goods that are reasonably priced. Most of the other bakeshops do carry steamed buns, though the varieties offered at each are not always the same. Came across a pack of vegetable and dried scallop steamed buns here that caught my eyes. Picked up a bag for $6. Either the bag was located in the wrong place, which is plausible due to the small space, but it turns out the buns that I got was a mix of vegetable and pork. If it is really the right item, must be they were going for dried scallop flavor or something. Dried scallops are quite expensive, so it was probably too much to expect a revelation here. Anyways, it was a decent bun that is great for a steaming piece of breakfast. I stand by my saying that I have not visited a Chinatown Vancouver bakery that I did not like. Though with so much gloriousness, I would not buy from just one place. Visit and pick out the goods that you like and move on to the next one. In that regard, Zhao Mah is worth a visit. What Zhao Mah lacks in size it makes up for in diversity. Despite having the width of a small alleyway and the depth of a large flatbed, this bakery offers a very diverse selection of cheaply priced baked goods. From their fresh steam buns to the oddly named (but normally delicious) Tropical Fruit Triangles, they have lunch and desert ready, for under $2 an item! I normally visit them for one of their four flavours of steam bun in the early afternoon and would recommend any but the chicken. Occasionally I try one their baked oddities, like their tuna rolls or their tiny "pizzas" . Along with the greasy 'Chinese donuts" and crab cakes, this makes for an unforgettable food excursion, fortunately not in a bad way. read more

This never ending winter has me craving carbs like a bear getting ready to hibernate so I sought out one of my favourite carb-laden treats, a coconut bun from Zhao Mah Bakery. The bun is made out of a glossy sweet bread dough, lightly dusted with sesame seeds and stuffed full of a buttery sweet coconut paste. As if that isn't enticing enough, they only cost $2 for 6 of them! This bakery is super small and doesn't have a huge selection but the few things that I have ventured a try have all been very tasty. I wouldn't have noticed this place except for the loyal local customers that go in there which caught my curiosity. Very fresh Chinese buns, cookies and other desserts at very reasonable price.
