Zen Kyoto is located in the PATH in the concourse level of First Canadian Place. The eatery is take out only where they are open from Mon to Fri, catering to the many people who work in the Financial District. There are grab and go options available or you can pre-order your sushi through their website or Ritual. The place does get busy at lunchtime but the staff are efficient, as they understand people are looking for a good grab and go option for lunch. I believe they also have a discount sale at the end of the day as well. I pre-ordered a 10 piece omakase box ($37) recently on their website for pickup. The online ordering is easy to manage and once I got to Zen Kyoto, my order was ready for pick up. I noticed that many people also pre-ordered items as well for a quick pick up. Staff were friendly during my pick up/ In terms of the 10 piece omakase, the box came with a fresh selection of pieces, including a 6 piece negi toro maki roll. In terms of the nigiri pieces, I got a salmon, ikura, uni, toro, scallop, foie gras, eel, sweet shrimp, hamachi, and I believe a flounder piece. All the pieces of dish and seafood were delicious and fresh! Definitely worth the price considering you get many of the premium sushi pieces for only $37. Overall, efficient service, delicious food, and friendly staff. Would definitely return to grab more sushi items!

This maybe my new favorite takeout for sushi sashimi. Everything just melted in my mouth. Bluefin, salmon belly, scallop and a whitefish(did not know the name) were heaven. All for 25$ i think!.

Had a craving for sushi .. I would have saved this meal and splurge for a better dinner. Sure I get it's a healthier option takeout option in the core. Too much rice for the sushi pieces and too much mayo for aburi sushi. Won't be coming back 4 stars for the service - though I did go after 2:30

They never, ever let me down. Such great value. So fresh. Great staff. I order from them sometimes twice a week when I'm in town. Sometimes I order something for pick up and then I see something else delicious in the grab and go case and get that too.

Zen Kyoto makes a great option when you're looking for some takeout sushi. Located in the PATH on the concourse level of First Canadian Place (by King and Bay), they are Monday to Friday, from 10:30 am to 5:00 pm. They have a selection of pre-packaged sushi, salads, and small sides at the counter for quick grab-and-go purchases, or you can opt to order something from their menu. Aside from great sushi combos, and maki rolls, the restaurant also offers a variety of rice bowls, and udon noodles. It's noted that there's usually a line of office workers during lunch hours, so it's recommended to place your order online in advance or pick up, or visit outside of their peak period if you're short on time. The sushi here isn't considered the best in town, but the quality is good enough for the price you pay. On my most recent visit, I ordered the Torch Combo ($18 - 12 pieces), which also comes with a miso soup. I've ordered this a few times before, but unfortunately the fish didn't taste as fresh as all the other times I've ordered the Torch Combo. However, since this was the first time out of a few where I was a little disappointed with the quality, I will not deduct any stars from my rating.

Friend recommended this place for their sashimi. It's in the PATH at First Canadian place, and not in the food court. Instead, it's in the bottom floor. I spent 10 minutes looking for it, hopefully you will have better luck. This is a takeout restaurant, with a small table near the entrance that will most likely be occupied. But you can just head to the food court upstairs or around the corner or anywhere in the PATH basically. While this restaurant serves ramen, I've heard that their specialty is sushi and sashimi, so it may be better to just avoid the other items that are there to cater to those that might not eat raw fish. There are many pre-boxed items available for quick takeout, but if you ask for a sashimi box for example, it will be prepared on the spot for you. You can probably even see the chef slicing the ingredients behind the counter. You can get a 55-piece sashimi box for $70, which seems like a pretty good deal. I don't really know most of the fish I'm eating so you can take a look at the picture for reference. Everything was delicious though. Texture and flavour was certainly much better than the stuff I'm used to. It is an omakase set though, so your mileage may vary.

This is a nice takeout sushi option if you're downtown in the PATH. I like the many different options available for sushi, torched sushi and nigiri. They also have ramen options. Takeout was fast and easy. The rice was a little too hard for my liking maybe because the rice is refrigerated over night. But the fish sashimi, nigiri and the torch nigiri fish all tasted fresh and delicious. Great option for quick lunch in the area

I returned to Zen Kyoto for lunch recently. As per usual, the place was bustling, but the service was pretty quick. I chose another prepackaged lunch, this time a combination of torched sushi, salmon sashimi, and grilled fish. Everything tasted good. The grilled fish wasn't overcooked. Above all, everything tasted fresh.

    Chirashi bowl with miso soup
    Isabella L.

Located in the path at first Canadian place, Zen Kyoto offers sushi, sashimi, and a variety of bowls and boxes. I ordered the chirashi bowl for lunch through ritual during their food fest promo. The chirashi bowl was pretty good. Fish was fresh and offered a good variety with salmon, tuna, tamago, tobiko, and amaebi. The rice could have been a bit fluffier and felt like there could be more to balance out the amount of raw fish given. Overall really good for sushi in the path (which is usually quite disappointing). Would order again!

My friend and I grabbed some Omakase from Zen Kyoto. It was a bit hard to find since it was inside a building, and not in the main food court section. It did take a bit for us to wait for the food to finish but we did order right when they open so it probably took a bit more time to prepare. We got the large omakase set, which came with 13 pieces as well as the smaller omakase set, which came with 10 pieces. Both sets also came with a six piece roll as well as a soup. For the price of the sushi box, I felt like it was a great deal. After finishing both boxes between two people, we were absolutely stuffed and very very full. As for the sushi pieces, they were all very fresh and I loved each piece that the chef prepared. There were some that I liked more than others just due to the preference I had for the piece of fish, but overall it was prepared very nicely and it came in a box! I highly recommend trying this place, especially if you're thinking of grabbing a box for a picnic !

    Michelle T.

Located at FCP and only opens M-F for lunch/noon. Mainly a grab n go spot but had some bar seating and one table. Wanted to try their omakase box but opted for the chirashi don ($18) because it "looked" like more food to me. They also have the deluxe chirashi for $26 but not sure what the difference is (the staff never gave me an answer but she checked with the chef since I asked if there uni for the deluxe etc. & they were nice to accommodate ).

    Jeffrey W.

This is a bustling take-out sushi place with some pre-made rolls, nigiri, and bento, as well as another menu for items like ramen and rice bowls. The quality is surprising for a take-out joint and while the price points seem a bit higher as a result, the quality increase makes it worth it. Service is efficient, but still nice. I like the clean bright lighting of the space. If you work in the area, there are ordering apps that may give occasional discounts to your order (starts with R and ends with L).

My friend had the King of Kings as our server said this is one of their most popular choices. I opted for the Spicy Charsu. Now I understand some people can't handle heat but I live off of Purple Tongue hot sauce which is made with some pretty hot peppers. I asked for a level one and the lady explained that the spice level on the Charsu was a whole series of levels higher than the King of Kings. I get that . Give me the heat. Anywho, she was comfortable with giving me 0.5 but said I could make it hotter if need be. Ok, better to start smaller I guess. They put some sauce on the side which I added to my bowl. Personally I found the 0.5 a nice tingle; it was good. Made my nose run. But I'm totally getting the level 1 next time. My friend however tried a sip of my broth, spit it out and said poison poison because of the heat Mind you, his King of Kings was a level 1. Which to me tasted creamy and delicious. I love a good pork bone soup and I opted for the Spicy Charsu because of the pork bone base. I loved the broth. It was perfection. The noodles were so fresh . The portion size was enormous. I kept eating and more noodles appeared. The Charsu had an amazing flavor to it . Smoky and delicious . My friend is a larger man and even he commented on the portion size saying he would be ok with a smaller size as he was so full. Good portions for your money. We also had the Gyoza and the TakoYaki. The TakoYaki was soft and loaded with the delicious sauce. The Gyoza were enormous. We were both 100% satisfied with our visit and will be back for sure.

The concerned server told me that it may be painful, but being the chili head that I am, I gladly took on the challenge. It was a larger bowl than their regular size and my ramen came topped with lots of corn, some mushrooms, bean sprouts and 6 large pieces of chasu. The broth was magma red, but it was not as spicy as I thought it would be. Don't get me wrong, it was spicy but not to the point where it would warrant a warning. The spicy broth tasted like a mix of Buldak sauce and Capsaicin, but didn't have much depth. I finished my ramen, broth and all and enjoyed most of the experience. The least favorite was the chasu and the egg as chasu did not taste fresh, and I could not taste the char on them at all. The egg was over-cooked and under marinated which was disappointing. It's still one of the few ramen options in Durham but can't say it's comparable to the other Kenzo locations.

Last Tuesday, I had my monthly 7 am meeting with a bunch of technical writing peers from around the world. It's quite the meeting that typically lasts for four hours. Luckily, we ended earlier than usual. It meant that my workday ended at around 3:30 pm. It was perfect, as I had a concert to attend several hours later. Normally, I don't do dinner before a concert. I grab a quick bite to each before I head downtown. This time, since I was done work early, I felt that having an early dinner was worthwhile. I drove downtown and parked in a lot that seems to be my usual spot whenever I'm attending a concert at Massey Hall. My original plan was to find an eatery close to the concert venue. I spotted Hokkaido Ramen Santouka steps away. I wanted ramen! I walked in and there was a sign that said to wait. I had no wait time. A woman and the entire staff greeted me. I asked for a table for me and got one. It was great. Seating between tables and diners is close together. You definitely overhear conversations and you can't help it. The man next to me had stretched his foot under my table. I didn't notice that he was in my space until I uncrossed my leg and my foot hit his. I listened to two friends next to me. The man seemed to take charge over what he and his female friend should eat, which was interesting. He gave the impression that he was an expert until the server came over and he had a ton of questions. It's always fun being an observer and listener. I had no choice but to listen to her dating experiences. I got a menu. I knew what I wanted. My server came over and was ready to take my order. I got these items: - Diet Coke - Miso chachu ramen, with bamboo shoot held - Jammy egg and corn as extra toppings The menu doesn't tell you what ingredients you get in each type of ramen. However, it does come with a photo. I asked how large a large bowl of ramen was. My server was great pointing up to a display of three bowls. I went large. The photo indicated that my miso ramen had bamboo shoots. I'm not a fan of them, so I asked that they be omitted. I also added a jammy egg and corn. I got a cold can of Diet Coke. A frosted glass with ice accompanied it. I was happy. I love an icy cold drink. This one was excellent. I loved that it was extra cold. My bowl of ramen had arrived. I was excited to dive in. My miso chachu ramen was delicious. The miso flavour was on point. I drank most of the broth, which speaks volumes on how yummy it was. The chachu was tender and had the best balance of pork and fattiness. The number of slices was generous. The ramen was chewy and perfectly done. I loved the corn and jammy egg. I probably wouldn't have enjoyed my ramen without these two key toppings. They worked nicely with the green onions. What prevents me from giving this place a perfect rating is flagging a server to get me water, or to frankly flag any staffer for something, such as ordering dessert or getting the bill. It took effort and hand-waving to get their attention. It took two tries to get a glass of water with ice. I was happy when I got some after I had finished my Diet Coke. It was equally as cold and yummy. I ordered dessert. The menu is stuck on each table. I asked what ice cream flavours were available. There were two flavours and I went with matcha. It was rich, creamy, and full of strong matcha flavour. The scoop of ice cream was generous. I loved the small spoon, which allowed this dessert to last a lot longer. I asked for the bill. I got a payment machine. I used my credit card to pay and tip. All was great. I used the washroom before I headed over to explore the downtown area. The washrooms are downstairs. It's an older building, so accessibility is an issue. There are two single-stall washrooms. The one that I used was clean. Because it's an older building, the ceiling is low. I am just shy of six feet in height. I made it without hitting my head on the ceiling. If you are six feet and taller, you'll need to duck to make sure you don't bang your head. Staff say goodbye to you when you leave. It was a nice touch, although I don't know what they are saying to me in Japanese. They could be swearing at me and I wouldn't know. I had a wonderful experience here. If you don't mind sitting close to folks and waving your arms like a maniac to get your server's attention, come here. This ramen joint appeared as a Michelin place in 2017. I can see why. The food quality is excellent. (200)
