Party tray E (145) and black Dragon roll
Chris C.

Favourite casual take out sushi in Toronto. Only available for take out. Chirashi bowls are good. The party platters are great. Torched sushi is good too. Friendly service. It can get busy on holidays so order ahead and give yourself atleast an hour on those occasions. Party tray E has chutoro, scallop, sweet shrimp. Typically items that would be premium.

Party Platter D

One of the better sushi spots in Toronto. The fish was fresh and sashimi was thick cut. You could tell they source quality ingredients. Got the party platter D, which is the perfect value and amount for 2 people. The packaging is also very sturdy and clean. Pick up was seamless, food was ready on time. Highly recommend and will be ordering again when I have a sushi craving!

Amazing sushi. Each piece quite literally melted in my mouth and tasted so high quality. There was one particular fish in this set that both my partner and I did not like very much but aside from that, I'd give it a solid 9.5/10.

Fast and welcoming service, to go only. Nice variety in the box, tastes fresh. Salmon was my favorite!

I ordered in or pick up at this location on their website over the last long weekend. The pick up process was seamless, the only situation that stressed me out a little was the street parking as I wasn't sure what to expect along Jarvis at 6pm on a Saturday. Luckily, I was able to find a parking spot in front of the restaurant so I made a quick run for my food. I bought the salmon combo and the deluxe roll combo for dinner and was the perfect portion for 2. I have always bought take out from the Woodbine location uptown, the downtown location did not disappoint and their quality is very consistent. Now that I know what to expect of their parking situation, I'd definitely order on their website for pick up again in the future.

This is the best place I've had in Toronto for take out sushi and sashimi! The presentation is so thoughtful, love the takeout boxes the platters come in. We ordered their party tray D, bbq eel roll, edamame and vegetable tempura and it was enough to feed five of us! The fish is always so fresh and it comes with generous amounts of ginger, wasabi and soy sauce. They only do takeout and It's always busy but the service is great, super fast.

Aburi / Torched Sushi Combo, Rainbow Roll, Unagi Donburi

J San Sushi Bar is one of the best spots for sushi takeout in the city, in my opinion. What I like best about this place: - High quality of sushi and sashimi (always fresh). - Very nice and elegant presentation and packaging. All food items are served in high-quality wooden-like boxes with proper lids, not styrofoam containers that most other take-out places use. It gives a "high-end" feel for take-out sushi. - The online ordering system is seamless for both pick-up / take-out and delivery. It gives quite a high amount of customizations you can make for each order (e.g. you can select 'no' to certain ingredients). - Quick and easy pick-up. After ordering online, they give a time estimate of when the food will be ready, and they send you a text message when the food is ready for pick-up. - Good rice-to-content ratio in the sushi rolls (more protein and content compared to rice). - They give the option of "no sauce" for the Unagi Donburi, which I appreciate. (I'm not a big fan of the sweet and sticky unagi sauce, but I like eel, so it's great that they provide this option.) J San is the only restaurant I've encountered (so far) that provides this option. When the Unagi Donburi came out, there is still a light touch of sauce on the unagi... just enough to make it flavourful, but not drenched in thick sweet sauce like in some other places. Even the yellow pickled radish it came with tasted fresh, crunchy, and not overly pickled-y. The downside for me was the Aburi / Torched Sushi Combo. I didn't like the sauces they put on the torched sushi (sweet yellow mango-like sauce on the salmon, tons of mayo on the shrimps and scallops). But all the other menu items (sushi, sashimi, donburi) are excellent.

Take out only. This is our go to place as their fish is always so fresh and their portions are great for the price. Service is minimal since it is take out but the times we've gone for pickup it has been fine. Love this place !

Torch sushi and roll combo

(Note: review is for delivery) This might sound a bit weird, but the best way to describe J San is hefty. I got the torch sushi and roll combo delivered and it was big and packed and heavy. To be clear, that's not bad. I guess I just like my sushi a bit more refined, especially at the $20 price point. But that's just personal preference. There was nothing wrong with J San. Maybe they could've torched the salmon/tuna/scallop/shrimp a tad more, but they were all tasty nonetheless. And the accompanying dragon roll was a mouthful (in a good way). Overall, happy I tried it. Not sure I'd go back, but that's just me. I can see why J San is popular on here, and think it's definitely worth a try.

I almost want to leave this review out to keep delivery times quick for myself, but J San is probably one of the best and most consistent sushi places in downtown Toronto. You're likely here from ubereats and looking for a good deal, and I can confirm that J San delivers it. The sushi is quite fresh and has the deep fish flavours you expect in every piece of nigiri and sashimi. The rolls are better than expected, especially the spicy salmon roll, which packs a great salmon flavour with minimal tempura filler. The restaurant itself operates as a takeout only, so there is no service or ambiance component to this review.

Deluxe Sashimi combo; torched sushi combo; j san roll

If you are looking for reasonably priced and fresh sushi, look no further. We tried the deluxe sashimi combo, torched sushi combo and J San Roll. The sashimi was fresh and pretty thick pieces. The torched sushi was pretty good although I feel like they were slightly over cooked. I would not recommend the J san roll. I wasn't a fan of the cooked salmon inside the roll, and there was prob not enough sauce so it was quite tasteless. The place gets super busy during lunch/dinner hours. We called in right when they opened at 11 on a sat, and was told it will be ready 30-40mins. But it ended up taking us almost an hour to get our food. Make sure to call in early! There's 10% off for cash payment.

Avocado Salad

In general, the freshness is there and the delivery speed is exceptional. I have ordered twice now and both times, none of my notes were followed, which can be dangerous if you have food allergies that are easily avoided. I also asked for chopsticks and both times received none so I had to eat with my hands. The sashimi was very good, except for the tuna, which smelled and tasted exactly like the tuna cat food I used to give my cat 20 years ago. I don't think I can ever eat tuna sashimi again after this experience. The rest of the sashimi was excellent. The next order I asked for no tuna and they gave me double! I had to throw it out. I also chose "no egg" in their drop down menu and they gave me egg, which I also had to throw out. The avocado on the salad was plentiful so that was good. I would order again if I knew they could follow my notes.

Premium chirashi
Sally L.

Great spot for quality sashimi. I recommend the premium chirashi bowl and torched sushi. Sashimi is fresh. I order on ritual to avoid the wait. There's no sit down and only takeout. They also have daily lunch specials.

There were three add-ons (toro with caviar $25, uni with caviar $35, and caviar sushi). I opted in for the toro and uni add-ons. It was strange they give you the add-ons before any other nigiri. Everything was very good and fresh. Standouts for me was the appetizer, all three cuts of bluefin tuna, the lobster (by far my favorite), and the hotaru ika. I would've appreciated knowing that the omakase included or not included toro and uni before I decided on the add-ons but I don't regret it. It was a splurge night after all. Service was very attentive. Note that the dining space is very small. 12 seats around the counter and two tables. There was a very loud gentleman two seats from me who never learned to use his inside voice and totally ruined vibe. But that's not on the staff. Another note is that gratuity is automatic on the bill.

The space itself leans more modern and clean rather than the typical dark, cozy izakaya vibe, which I actually didn't mind. It felt comfortable, not too loud, and easy to settle into for a slow dinner. We ordered a mix of small plates to share, and everything came out looking nicely put together. The aburi-style salmon sushi was one of the highlights for me.. lightly seared, with a soft texture and just enough flavor on top without being overwhelming. The tuna tataki was also fresh and clean, simple but well done. Some of the fried dishes leaned a bit richer with the creamy sauces, but they were still enjoyable, especially if you're in the mood for something a little more indulgent. The beef fried rice was straightforward but satisfying, one of those dishes that's easy to keep going back to between everything else. Drinks were a nice touch too.. refreshing, nicely presented, and added to the overall experience. Overall, this feels like a solid spot for a casual night out with friends. It's not overly traditional, but it's easygoing, shareable, and comfortable.. the kind of place you'd come back to when you just want good food and a relaxed atmosphere.
