I had a solo birthday meal which coincided with Winterlicious for 2025 this year in February. For the price it was very impressive! Check out my pictures, but everything was included for a low price, including ceviche shrimp salad, along with sushi and then a matcha pie which the staff kindly adorned with a candle since it was my birthday meal. The vibe inside is date night for sure with low lighting and smartly dressed attractive staff who knew what they were doing. Since this place has been in business for so many years you know they are doing something right. Came just to try their $5 giant nigiri! They were MASSIVE and actually really delicious. I quite liked the aburi one, the fish was tender and torched perfectly. While both the plain salmon nigiri & aburi one were topped with unagi sauce. the aburi one has truffle mayo inside which really elevated the taste! I also liked how the nigiri is stuffed with spicy salmon, so it's not just plain rice. I got the aburi chef sushi set because it seemed to be their popular sushi option. Unfortunately it was all one note and underwhelming. Don't get me wrong I like seared nigiri pieces but all of them (even tho it was different fish) tasted the same. seared + some kind of sauce. Def room for improvement: wish they incorporated different sauce so that it wasn't exactly copy and paste. Maybe have some with yuzu sauce to cut down on the oiliness? After 5-6 pieces, they all started to taste same and greasy. Right now they have a $1/salmon sashimi January promotion (5x minimum order) and I found it fresh and tasty. Would get again. This place is suppose to be a sushi and a taco spot so I had to try their taco. The waitress said the bulgogi taco was a popular once again, it was ehhh. The beef was flavorful but the guacamole that they used tasted like store bought guac. From a texture standpoint, it was too mushy for me. The guac ratio was off too, it had wayyy too much guac vs meat ratio. I went there on a Sunday afternoon and there were only two other tables there. I was eating by myself and I felt like the service was TOO efficient which I don't think is a good thing. Hear me out... Before I could finish chewing my last piece of nigiri the waitress came to take my plate away. I didn't even get to eat my ginger. After seeing many videos on this place advertising the fusion between Japanese and Mexican food, I visited in June to take advantage of their gozen sets. This included your choice of chirashi don ($35), unagi don ($32), or salmon avocado don ($31), as well as an assortment of sides (guac'n'raw, assorted sashimi, chicken karaage, takoyaki, croquette, tako wasabi seaweed salad, and crispy pressed sushi). It was such a great way to sample everything they had. Along with this deal, they also had $1/pc salmon sashimi, as well as $1/oz sake (hot or cold). My favourite was the crispy rice and potato croquette (crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside). Everything was tasty, but the guac'n'raw was a unique twist. With avocado being such a beloved ingredient in most sushi rolls, there's no way it wouldn't have worked paired with sashimi and chips! The sashimi was also fresh. My one critique would be that I asked for no wasabi in anything (anticipating that they would mix it with the octopus/tako wasabi) and it still came with it - they simply omitted it on the side. Unassuming sushi spot on Queen West. The warm glow of neon greets you as you walk in. The menu is vast with a mix of traditional Japanese faire as well as fusion options (tacos!). I ordered the small hot sake which was a respite on a cold winter day. We shared the love platter amongst the three of us. There was not a single thing in the platter we didn't enjoy. We especially loved the aburi sushi on the platter. There was enough food to easily feed three people. The server came by frequently to take dishes and refill water without asking. If you leave a review, you get a free Japanese Cheesecake dessert, however, I was planning on leaving a review anyways as the food was just that good. We came on a Monday night and we got a seat right away. I ordered the combo A for one which came with chef's selection of 8 pcs sushi, spicy salmon avocado roll and a miso soup. My friend got the Poseidon roll. I tried a piece of my friend's Poseidon roll and it was very delicious. The presentation of my combo was very elegant. The meal didn't look big but it was quite filling. The flavor was very unique and interesting. It was different compared to the sushi I tend to get in Vancouver for sure. The food was below average, so much so that my toddler thought that one of the pressed sushi rolls was cheese (that was the texture - and I don't believe sushi should ever have the texture of cheese lol). They also had a "happy hour menu" except that many of the items on the "happy hour" menu were the same exact price as the "regular" menu... Little shady? The service was average - though one thing to note is that they do not take Amex and they do not make this clear at all so we only learned that when trying to pay the bill. We liked the aesthetics so decided to sit down for a bite to eat. We were first seated at a table in the back but the whole entire table was shaking??? Found my new favorite Sushi hangout (and bar). Saku has a nice atmosphere and when happy hour hits, they dim the lights further and bring out the happy hour menus. The interior space is nice a cozy and they decorated the exposed industrial look of the place with artificial foliage gives it a nice forest-y feel. They play muted TV shows and movies via projector nearer to the back of the restaurant. We saw Howl's Moving Castle and a bit of Friends. There is booth, bench, 2s/4s table, bar seating, and other configurations. Looks like they can seat about 40+ or so. The staff were attentive and friendly. Many patrons were there for a long time just enjoying the place and company. We had the following: - 3 pcs Baja Fish Taco (soft) - Salmon Avo Oshi Zushi - Truffle Fries - Tokyo Rose (drink) The portions were great with lots of protein and/or fillings/toppings. The Baja was well balanced and well seasoned, it came together very well. The Salmon Avo was was packed with lots of ingredients and was filling. Having had a tour of the truffle fries at different Toronto establishments, these were not overpowering and had the right amount (imo) of truffle oil and was cripsy. The drinks on the menu were all interesting and the Tokyo Rose was sweet and smooth. It looks like most of their cocktails are on the sweet side. This is my friend's and my go to place for late night drinks and eats. The vibes are chill and the staff give you the space to catch up with friends. Food is good. Solid sushi and surprisingly decent tacos too for a sushi place. The drinks are all really taste (though on the sweeter side if that's your taste). What a great spot! My friend and I were long overdue for a catchup and went to Saku for dinner. There were so many fun drinks to try on their cocktail menu. I went for the Yuzu Totoro and it had such a nice, balanced flavour! For starters, we got the Takowasabi. I was surprised it came with tortilla chips alongside the regular seaweed that I'm used to, but it worked! Then for mains, we shared the Chef Special Aburi Sushi, and because we were at a sushi + taco bar.. we had got our own tacos. We loved the Aburi Sushi! Each fish was so fresh and tasty, I could have had another 10 pieces. My friend got the crispy shell Camaron (Shrimp) while I got the soft shell Soy Garlic Tinga (Chicken). There was so much chicken in mine, I had to eat some of it first before I could properly hold it like a taco. If you get a soft shell, I highly recommend eating it promptly once it is served because we were talking for so long, the sauce soaked the shell and it crumbled in my hand. Oops! I'll definitely be back to try some of the other menu items! There were so many interesting options. Aside from food, our service was great. They were always checking in to make sure we had water for the table, and were happy to share recommendations. The restaurant itself was clean and I liked the decorations. Had a delicious late dinner at Saku this weekend, and it did not disappoint! This month they're doing a 10th anniversary special where they have $14 rolls and $6 tacos (+$2 for lobster). They also have seasonal specials and an extensive happy hour menu with different food specials and $10 cocktails! We got a bit of everything and although everything tasted great, I'd say the highlight of my experience was the lobster roll. This was my 2nd time going to Saku (the first time was during the pandemic), and they definitely added a lot more decorations e.g. dried florals, grass, lights, and neon signs in the space! It was really nicely decorated and had great vibes inside. I came here to catch up with some friends, and we ordered various rolls and the bulgogi tacos. The food was really good, especially with the size of the rolls, and servers came by often to refill our waters. However, we got the sense that they were trying to rush us out - e.g. immediately clearing plates, giving us the machine to pay, then instantly clearing the receipts from the table lol. This is fine since it was a Friday night, but I feel like they could have been more understanding since it was a larger group, which would take more time, as opposed to dining with one other person. Right now they have a takeout deal for 30% off their special platters and that's a deal we couldn't resist! We got platter M2 and were very happy with it. The sushi was great and we really liked all three rolls. The Salmon Avocado rolls were packed with a lot more salmon and avocado than we'd get at most places so that was a very pleasant surprise. The Atlantic Queen roll and Spicy Salmon roll were both super flavourful as well. From the three tacos we tried the Shrimp was definitely our favourite. They were very well seasoned and the toppings complimented the flavour well. I was so excited for the Bulgogi taco, and although the beef was delicious there was way too much Queso Fresco that overwhelmed the taste. The fish tacos were pretty good but nothing too amazing. We hope to be back sometime, especially if they still have the 30% platters takeout deal. Went on a busy Saturday night and still had great service. Food came out quickly and the portions were generous for two. The highlight was the salmon tataki, which was a nice contrast to the fried takoyaki. Also, the assorted tempura was much bigger than we expected! Our server gave us some great recommendations. WOW i'm impressed! The Summerlicous menu is so good!!! I'm so happy with the results of the food and how it tasted. Here are mine and my friend's rating of the food. STARTER: 6.5,7,6,6 APPETIZER: 7,7,8,7.5 MAIN: 9,5,7,8 DESSERT: 9,9,9,8 The service was also great and there were atleast 2 servers which was amazing and I never had an empty water glass! The setting was perfect for a sushi night, and the playlist was so well made. The lights suddenly darkened which was a bit scary but the rest was really cool and i enjoyed it there. Overall: I would totally go again! also happy hour is at 9pm and 4:30-5:30pm. Make sure to go for that and summerlicious. The only problem is the minor inconveniences like the sushi sticking to the paper and the large chopsticks. The lobster taco was dry, and there were flies in the bathroom with only one stall as well. This is one of my top restaurants in Toronto now! I didn't accept it like it so much but It's definitely living up to the hype. It's a cute restaurant downtown with nice ambience. That has a combination of Japanese Mexican food that is really delicious. The appetizers were super tasty And we're super cute and small. We also got the volcanoe and shrimp tempura roll. The best thing we got while beef bulgogi tacos A great combination of mexican japanese culture mixing. My only criticism is the cheese in the bottom of the taco below the meat gave it a strange texture. I think they should remove the cheese below the beef. Next time I'll try the chicken tinga taco. The crispy taco was also well made. A real fried tortilla shell, not a typical store bought taco shell as most Canadian places use . I'm from California so I know tacos. I did not love the food service. Upon entering, the waitress did not seem friendly. I thought it was me but my husband agreed as well. Food was okay. I don't like sushi that is heavily sauced salty. The pressed sushi had a mushy texture as well. There were three waitresses on staff and they completely ignored a couple for five minutes waiting to be seated. It has the same great food and lively atmosphere. It's a little less busy during late lunch hour, but there were a couple tables and service was still great. Appetizers are beautifully plated and yummy, the yuzu salsa was a really nice touch to seared sashimi. This time instead of tacos and rolls, I tried the sushi, sashimi and futomaki, which was good in variety and freshness, but missing the wow factor like my experience at The Haam.
