    Saikyo miso baked sablefish

Went here NYE with 7 friends and had such a great time. Beautiful restaurant and even better food. We got some top notch sake along with the salmon crudo, mushrooms (which come in a soup of sherry broth), o-toro and caviar duo (which was very nice but you could get something slightly bigger for the same value), o-toro sushi, yellowtail aburi (which had a nice little jalapeno kick to it), kaisen roll (the most mediocre of all the dishes we had), saikyo miso baked sablefish, carrot cake, and black sesame ice cream (skip it cause it was pretty much all ice). Service was good but a little slow. Could've been because it was NYE and they were also hosting pre-fix seatings. I would definitely go back and try more items off the menu, but with a $150 bottle of sake this place can be pretty expensive.

Honestly, I was surprised that this didn't deserve 5 stars; the ambiance and the location are so good, and it usually looks busy with the theatre crowd. However, the food wasn't that memorable, except for the wild mushrooms, which we ordered twice. The aburi sushi, Minami sushi, Kaisen roll, and poke didn't have any surprising flavours; I am comparing these dishes to the amazing equivalents at to Chotto Matte, for instance. The fried chicken was the low point of the meal; their house made tartar sauce made the chicken soggy and cold. The service was slow but very friendly. They have a Winterlicious menu coming up, so perhaps that will have a good array of dishes that we didn't try yet. Hopefully!

When you think about Aburi oishi sushi in Toronto, it's hard not to think of names like JA Bistro, Minami and Miku. I'm more of a traditionalist when it comes to sushi so aburi oishi sushi would not be on top of my list, but as a foodie, I'm almost obligated to give them a try. The annual Winterlicious was the perfect opportunity for me to check them out. According to their site, Minami was America's best designed restaurant in 2021. Really? Don't get me wrong, it is a nice setting, but award winning? Plus we are not American. And the restaurant felt like they only spent effort on the top half of the walls in the washroom. And their menu is supposedly designed by a Japanese Michelin starred chef. Well the thing is, it's not cooked by one. For the starter, I elected for the beef sukiyaki; the name a bit misleading. There is absolutely no soup in this dish (they did describe it on their menu though). Braised beef marinated in sukiyaki sauce would be a more suitable name. In my books, this dish absolutely failed. The braised beef was decently tough. When the bartender/server asked me how it was, I told her exactly how it was. But her response , even if she didn't mean it was quite unprofessional and insulting. She didn't apologize, nor suggest how she can make it better. Instead, she said it's a bit tougher because it's braised. What is that supposed to mean anyway? Are you saying I don't know my food? Have I not had braised beef before? My response to her was pick cuts of meat that is a little more fatty and slow cook it a bit more. The taste of the beef was also nothing special. However, I really liked the roasted Brussel sprouts (and I'm normally not a brussel sprouts guy) and potatoes were very well done. I would actually order a serving of the brussel sprouts on its own if I could. Although done right, I'm not sure how the onsen egg factors into the dish. The 6 pieces of sushi were also nothing special. I can tell, high quality fresh fish was used in the nigiri sushi (scallop, salmon and yellowtail), but I hate the fact that they feel like they had to do something to it, regardless if it is torching, adding some sort of sauce on top or overdoing the wasabi. Those things all took away from the taste of the fish. The aburi oishi sushis were not great. They pressed the sushi too much, and the sushi became too moist, dense and heavy. I felt like the sauces used on each piece were your standard oishi sushi sauce. I'm just glad I didn't come at normal times and order 12 pieces of these guys. Their layered carrot cake was a pleasant surprise. I generally dislike carrot cake, but they managed to make it enjoyable. The cream cheese espuma and sake infused pineapple compote made the difference. I didn't taste the miso, but the miso caramel was not overly sweet. The service and how much they dropped the ball on the food items that truly "counts", led to a super disappointing experience. If their intention in participating in the Winterlicious is to convince people to have a return visit, Minami has failed in this regard. It even made me think twice about trying, their sister restaurant, Miku in the future.

Located in a vibrant part of the city, Minami has a fun yet classy mid century, cozy vibe. Sat in a booth and it was perfect. Not loud so we could catch up. Service was friendly, attentive and accommodating. The food and drinks were beautifully presented and tasty. Really felt like we were somewhere special. Would come here again for a celebration or to connect with friends.

LLOVE this place! A friend's friend recommended this place a few years back but I never get the chance to try it, and I can finally see why it's popular. This is a modern Japanese place. There's a live DJ for outdoor seating but I choose indoor seating. I ended up ordering Minami roll, sablefish, caviar and toro, ebi oshi and carrot cake. The minami roll has a small piece of waygu beef on top, with negitoro. I really like the amount of rice vinegar added to the sushi rice, and it stood out against the typical sushi I had. When you put a piece of the roll in your mouth, it's like an orchestra of unique flavors in your mouth. The ebi oshi is unique since the typical sushi is formed by hand whereas theirs probably has the topping first, then rice on top and flip it over to make it a perfect rectangular shape. The sablefish is good. The sauce was a bit on the saltier side. The caviar and toro was ok. I didn't expect the toro to be chopped in small pieces so I didn't really taste the fattiness of the fish. The carrot cake was pretty unique since the pineapple was soaked in sake. I also like that it's not overly sweet. Overall, I like the quality of the food. The thing I didn't like as much was the tables were pretty close to each other so I would have liked it if it's less cramped. The prices are reasonable for the quality of the food. I would probably come back if I ever come back to the area

I recently revisited Minami for dinner with my family on a weekend night. The restaurant was only half full but the food was served extremely slow. It took us 2.5 hours to finish the meal. The food quality was five star, almost every dish was impressively good. However, the service was so terrible. I would suggest you to come only if you are not in a hurry of catching any show afterwards. Also check with them in advance about the baby food/drinks policy if you are bringing a baby/small toddler with you. We were guided to our seat immediately after we arrived. Shortly after that, we were told by the waitress to pack away my toddler's sippy cup. He was not allowed to drink water from his own bottle! I found this quite annoying. We were planning to order a couple sets of tasting menus ($110 for five courses) and some sharing plates, but were told by the waitress again that we were not allowed to do so. We asked if we needed to order one tasting menu per person (which was too much for the group with two small eaters and a toddler) but the waitress said no. We were very confused with her poor communication and almost gave up ordering the more expensive tasting menu. In the end, we finally were able to figure out the chef's intention was just worrying about we didn't have enough food. So we ordered four sharing plates and two sets of tasting menus. Almost every dish was delicious although most appetizers were served with very small portion. The tasting menu came with two appetizers, one aburi platter, one main hot dish and a dessert plate. All of them were delicious. The first appetizer was the oyster (you can add 2g caviar for $8). The oyster was fresh but caviar was small and not flavourful. The second appetizer was the super refreshing salmon tartar. We fought for it. After a long long wait, we finally got to taste the aburi sushi platter. There were salmons, yellowtail, Madai and scallop. Every piece was so delicious and the sushi rice didn't collapse when you picked it up. After another half an hour wait, we got to eat our main dish, sable fish and lobster tail. Lobster tail was good but not wowing. Sable fish was literally the best cooked fish I've ever had in GTA! It was cooked and seasoned so perfectly. Great chef! For sharing plates, we ordered the yummy wild mushroom, the softshell crab (yummy but super small portion), the overcooked broccolini and the charcoal aburi chicken which turned out to be super flavourful and tender. For dessert plates included in the tasting menu, you can choose either sesame or taro flavour sorbet plus mochi, fruits and candy. The candy was too sweet for me, the rest of the dish was okay. Again we waited a long time for the bill. Overall, we enjoyed the food quite well here although it was a little bit pricey, but the service was not family friendly and terrible. If you care more about what you are eating, then Minami is the right place for you.

Came here before one of our Broadway musical show. Everything was great however on the pricey side. Seafood was fresh and flavours all worked great together. Service was good, they cleaned our table often, however as it got busier, the less attention we received. Great place if you want a more higher end Japanese food, but the wallet will feel it too.

We did the winterlicious menu when we went here. Right from the welcome by the host to the service levels by the server, the place was awesome. The interior and bar area were very tastefully decorated with a hint of the eastern world meeting the western. Between the 3 of us we tried almost all of the items on the menu and each one of them was amazing. I ordered the Beef Sukiyaki as the starter. It was delicious with the beef itself very succulent along with the roasted Brussel sprouts and the sauce. For the mains, I had the Kakuni Don while the others had the sushi plates. Both were delicious and the discreet taste of herbs and accompaniments did not. Lash with the taste of the fish or the pork. For desert I had the carrot cake, which was a very pleasant surprise. I am not a huge fan of carrot cake but this specific example was out of the world. All of us unanimously gave this place a 5 star.

Location is awesome if you are catching a Tiff Show or Mirvish show in Toronto. Ambiance is modern fresh and sleek with accomodation for larger groups and booths and tables for singles and parties of 2. Menu is Japanese bit definitely beyond the standard options. The chicken bao happy hour special with beef was so delicious!!! love the tartar sauce on the chicken thigh and the beef was melt away tender and portionsnfor happy hour wete not small and easily shareable. Brussel sprouts were nicely charred and bacon was generous cubes and not too salty. the Calamari was cooked with a deft hand, not overdone and delicately tender with an airy light tempura batter, served with sweet pickoed turnip and brussel sprouts. the Gyoza were served with micro greens and a pleasant sauce. they also have agreat uappy hour cocktail menu but had to skip for this visit. Food was 5 but aervice was amazing or slow so had to take away for that

Maybe a bit of a controversial opinion, but I think I prefer this restaurant to Miku. With a more relaxed, intimate atmosphere, the excellent food at this place makes it definitely worth a try when downtown. We chose a variety of dishes from their lunch menu, including of course their famous aburi sushi. The torched sushi was fantastic - fresh ingredients along with a delicate balance of flavours had me savouring every bite. The sauces on top complemented the fish selection exquisitely and the sear was perfect. I would expect nothing less with prices like this - yes, portion sizes are certainly on the small side. I was also a bit less impressed with the salmon crudo, which we were recommended as appetizer, as the taste was rather bland and just not very interesting. We had a couple of their desserts and it's not their strong suit - not bad at all, but not outstanding and quite expensive. Service was wonderful - the place was fairly empty on a weekday noon (I guess they don't really get the corporate lunch crowd from the financial district?) and our waitress was friendly and welcoming. No complaints from us. My recommendation would be to come for their oshi sushi, and skip everything else.

My fiancé took me here for dinner and this was such a wonderful, pleasant evening. Our server Miles was so kind and helpful - he had some great recommendations for us to get started. First off was the charred broccoli and pork gyoza. I am being serious when I say this was some of the best broccoli I've ever had.. the sauce was aMAZING but just the way it was cooked - it was delicious! I never thought I'd be raving about vegetables. On to the mains - we got the Salmon and Yellowtail Oshi along with the Minami Roll. The fish tasted so fresh and the wagyu! Each bite was a flavour bomb. We also got the Miyazaki A5 Wagyu Ribeye - I'll admit, this was my first time trying wagyu steak and people really aren't exaggerating when they say it melts in your mouth ... yum! We wrapped up our dinner with a slice of pumpkin pie. Miles added a little candle and that made the experience more personal. I love carrot cake and this hit the spot. We heard they have lunch bento boxes.. which I am looking forward to trying! I loved our experience here. Would definitely recommend and will be back soon!

Dined here on the weekend for a late lunch and the restaurant itself is very aesthetically pleasing. Greeted by a friendly host and got seated quickly. There is happy hour specials so it is a good opportunity to get a discount on their drinks and appetizers. I ordered Asahi beer for $8.00 and my friend ordered one of their Signature Cocktails for $12.00. Both were on the happy hour menu! I think their daily happy hour is from 3-5 but best to check first :) We decided to share the Minami Signature Special which included 12pcs (a selection of nigiri and aburi oshi) and the Minami Roll. The flavours were impeccable and not overwhelming. Overall, very fresh and subtle - although a bit on the pricier side, it is a restaurant that I would love to visit again on occasion. All in all, service was nothing but amazing. Always checking in and making sure we had everything we needed. If you haven't visited Minami yet, I would recommend to come during happy hour to take advantage of the specials while enjoying delicious sushi.
