We went there for a girls day and was happy but not blown away. The place is super cute and decorated well, and all the staff were super kind. We have reservations but it seemed like if you didn't, there was a bit of a wait. The dining area was full of patrons. They had many options and the set meals looked delicious but I ended up going for the classic salmon don. After ordering however, there was a decent wait until we got the food. It took longer than i expected. When we got the food it was went presented, but looked like less food for the price I was paying. That being said it was delicious with the salmon being great quality and the rice was cooked perfectly. There was also onions on too which I didn't expect to like but it went perfectly with everything. Overall, it was a great time if going with friends to catch up with and you're trying to have a fancier night out! read more

Came here for Summerlicious a few weeks ago, it was prix fixe $34 for a three course meal. We were a party of five, so we got everything! APPS: Options were mini taco samplers (veggie + spicy salmon), uni mini cones, and chawanmushi (steamed egg with seafood). Favourite here is chawanmushi, tho the others were good too. Uni cones would have been better if it was actual pieces of uni rather than an uni cream. MAINS: Options were tomato salmon tsuyu soba (the viral one), salmon steak teishoku, special sushi set. Favourite here is definitely the salmon soba. Very unique and refreshing, though taste isn't something out of this world. It's what you would think it tastes like - long strings of salmon! DESSERT: Options were matcha strawberry tiramisu, house made sorbet (got the yuzu mojito one), and cheesecake. Surprisingly the sorbet was amazing. The flavour was so good, we thought about getting another on the side. SERVICE: 3/5 tbh. They weren't very welcoming and didn't ask if we wanted anything else (so we weren't able to order another dessert). At the end, just asked if we were ready for the bill. It was just the bare minimum. TIPS: There's Green P Street parking (paid) right outside and along Yonge St. There's also a couple of paid parking garages nearby. Come early if you want a convenient spot next to the restaurant, though even if you park a little further, the walk is short and you can always go shopping nearby! Strongly recommend making a reservation. They tend to get really busy around the 1pm mark. read more

I can't recommend Hay Sushi enough! I originally went during Summerlicious and ended up going back three times because it was that good. The atmosphere was relaxed, not overly busy, and we were seated quickly without a reservation, which was a great start. I ordered the assorted nigiri and the salmon noodles, and both were fresh, flavourful, and beautifully presented. For dessert, the cheesecake was absolutely incredible, and the matcha tiramisu was just as delicious, definitely worth saving room for both. The cocktails were also phenomenal and paired perfectly with the meal. Considering the quality of the food, drinks, and overall experience, the Summerlicious menu was an amazing value. I'll definitely be back, even outside of Summerlicious! read more

Food 4/5 Service 4/5 Vibe 5/5 I personally will get this place 4/5 I think it's super aesthetic and the food is also very good. Some dishes may not be the best but I think overall everything tastes great. I personally recommend the tuna tartare, tempura bundle and their karage. Their tacos were not bad, but I just don't like how much imitation crab they put in with the salmon or the Tuna one. If they make it without or less imitation crab, I would love them a lot more.. Overall, I think it's a really cute spot for date night or some cute pics. read more

Had the opportunity to try out this sushi restaurant in North York and their Winterlicious menu. Starting at $45, it offered a three course meal dessert which was a great price as most things here are $20+ min. Went with a friend so got to try two different sets from their Winterlicious menu. I ate the following: Appetizers Chawanmushi - steamed egg Mini taco sampler Second course Salmon sashimi Yusuf salmon & double shrimp oshi Third course Sapporo style curry teishoku Sushi set teishoku- assorte nigir set with bluefish tuna, salmon, bream bass etc Dessert Hay Cheesecake Matcha strawberry tiramisu My favourite from the three course meal got to be the main courses. The sushi set had a variety of super fresh Nigri and sashimi, including bluefish tuna, salmon, bream, bass etc. The curry teishoku was so good and flavorful. This curry was served with a super tender chicken thigh with an assortment of seasonal vegetables ( lotus root, mushroom etc). This made the curry super rich and flavourful. Special shout out the Hay Cheesecake - not too heavy and sweet, yet still rich. A must try at this restaurant. Overall, this a very stylish restaurant, comfortable seating with great service. Parking is found on the streets or nearby parking lots. Despite Winterlicious being over, this place does serve fine japanese cuisine and sushi and would love to come back to check out their regular menu as well! read more

I recently came here again for dinner with some friends! It's a solid and safe spot for sushi. I also tried their miso pasta and it was really creamy. Their sushi taco was crispy and so filling. I got a sushi platter this time to share, it was perfect for a group of four. My least favourite was the deep fried roll. The service is pretty good. The staff are very friendly. I love the tea they serve as well. The space is pretty spacious with comfy seating and a coat rack to hang up your jackets. read more

I have been loving Hay Sushi lately. We dined there twice in the past month and it has yet to disappoint! The restaurant is spacious and minimalistic and I haven't had a problem getting a seat without a reservation on weeknights. Some of my favourite dishes are: - Creamy Miso Pasta ($23): The sauce is creamy and flavourful and the masago adds a small crunch. My partner liked it so much we have set out to make our own miso pasta at home - Nigiri 12 ($34): I have yet to visit on a weekend so I haven't tried the Omakase Premium Nigiri but the Nigiri 12 is great! The sashimi is fresh and I particularly enjoyed the squid, scallop, ikura and ebi. - Yuzu Salmon Oshi Sushi ($6): The perfect torched bite! 2 pieces go by fast so be prepared to order more read more

Hay Sushi is my go-to sushi place! I have been here 5 times, and I love it even more since the renovation. The new lighting makes it cozy, the decor is more elegant and they offer more tables than the original one. The fish is always fresh. I always order set dinner menu B (chef selection), as it came with sashimi and sushi. The staff is super friendly, lovely and helpful. There's one time, my friend and I ordered tuna sashimi, it supposed was 5 pieces, but the staff added extra one piece to us for free. If you're looking for great sushi, check it out! read more

I did give 4/5 I've always ordered takeout from here and decided to dine here with a friend for birthday. There's alot of seating and bar seating, the interior is simple but really modern. The service was really nice and I would say we didn't wait too long for our food. The server was very knowledgeable and super nice. I would recommend getting the platters and we got the B one. It was a pretty good mix to try everything. I do not recommend the crispy tuna roll. the cream cheese is weird. the miso pasta was bomb, as someone who doesn't like pasta. the shrimp a mushroom were a nice touch. Spicy salmon taco was good as well. FYI, I usually get the salmon poke for takeout and it's the best thing ever so would recommend getting that :) also a downside: No free parking depending on the time but have to pay green P read more

This review is from two visits, the first one I ordered sushi and udon, and the second was sushi and fusion pasta. The sushi was delicious but their creamy miso seafood pasta was the highlight. We got the weekend sushi special it had premium fish. The creamy miso pasta came with generous amount of shrimp and it was plump and cooked perfectly. The udon soup was really basic and i wouldn't recommend it over the pasta. Lobster sushi was huge, along with the other black dragon roll that isn't pictured. The rice to filling ratio is my favourite, minimal rice and more filling. Place is always packed but we walked in both visit and got seats at the bar right away. read more

Cute newly renovated modern sushi spot in North York Area. Believe they just moved a few stores down and the space is minimal and nice. Came here during the summer month and the AC was blasting in here - a little too cold if I'm being honest. But I came here with one thing in mind only which was their nori tacos. Here's what I thought: Spicy salmon nori taco 5/5 - Came with mayo, salmon, crab meat, green onion and cucumber. All wrapped in a fried nori taco shell. I loved this! The flavours and textures were to die for. Tuna nori taco 5/5 - Similar to the spicy salmon nori taco, I loved the texture of this as well. Big chunks of tuna pieces and was absolutely delicious. Creamy miso pasta 4/5 - Delicious, creamy and cooked perfectly with their pasta. It comes with black tiger shrimps and topped with nori and scallion. Truffle aburi 3/5 - This was chef's selection of ten pieces of nigiri, lightly seared with torch and topped with house made truffle aburi sauce. This was definitely a miss since you can't taste the truffle at all. It was good but nothing amazing imo. Overall, I can't wait to come back for the nori tacos they have here. It was absolutely divine and worth a try! read more

Restaurant design is very stylish. Choice of chairs are very comfortable and very good looking. The menu covers are made of leather, which tells you that this restaurant pays attention to detail. Level of lighting is perfect for date night. not bright and not harsh, it creates a good mood for relaxation. We went for miso seafood pasta and steak tacos. the miso sauce had perfect consistancy that coats the with just the right amount. The spaghetti was cooked slightly al dente which makes it have some texture to the bite and not all soft. Comes with 4 big shrimp (makes it good for sharing because of even numbers) and some sliced button mushrooms. The steak tacos come with 2 per order (also good for sharing) the shell was made of thick crispy seaweed in the shape of a traditional taco shell. Filling from top to bottom was thinly sliced purple onions and chopped green scallions, then the diced steak was seasoned, charred and cooked well done, and the bottom layer was sushi rice, no sauces but still packing lots of flavour and not dry either. This is the type of restaurant i would keep coming back to just for the atmosphere and the prices are good relative to the quality of food. read more

Tried this place out last month and it was cozy and cute vibe inside the restaurant. Service was great and food was served within a good time frame. The Salmon Nori Taco was delicious, it's not packed with a lot of rice so it won't make you too full. I got the Maki Party Tray A to share with a friend and it was super filling. The one thing I didn't like about this set was the fact that every single roll except for the spicy salmon roll was stuffed with so much crab meat. It made everything borderline taste the same which was a shame. I wasn't a huge fan of the rice paper roll used for the Pink dynamite roll either. I personally wouldn't order this set again. Overall, I would come back for the nori tacos and to try their pastas and order individual rolls and maki. read more

The restaurant has a Korean modern atmosphere. We first ordered the Osulluc pear tea and it was very refreshing. Theyre known for their nori taco and their pasta. The tuna norm taco has many chunks of raw tuna seasoned beautifully on a bed of seasoned rice and dressing on top. The miso pasta was very creamy. The miso flavour is very light. It was flavourful especially with the shrimp. Be aware, the menu mentioned veggies, but it's only mushrooms. Their rolls are big and flavourful, and of course their sashimi was fresh. We really enjoyed the meal and the servers were helpful and friendly. I would definitely come back here again and try more items on their menu. read more

I recently visited Hay Sushi again and they had moved to a beautiful new spot just down the street (still on Spring Garden) where Ichiban sushi used to be. I wish I had taken some interior photos, had I known that there were no updated interior photos on Yelp. The new restaurant is minimalist and laid out very comfortably. We ordered Maze udon, Hwe dupbap, and 2 spicy salmon nori tacos and thoroughly enjoyed all the food. The spicy salmon nori taco was a bit hard to eat and I didn't love that they mixed so much imitation crab meat into the taco filling. The flavour was ok but I wouldn't order this again. The Hwe dupbap and maze udon were both fantastic though. The presentation was lovely and the flavours were bang on. My maze udon had loads of green onion and ground meat with shaved katsuobushi. The egg yolk added such a wonderful creaminess to the sauce and I thoroughly enjoyed this dish. The Hwe dup bap was more predictable but well executed with fresh fish and loads of vegetables. We enjoyed our experience here at the new Hay Sushi location and would definitely return to try their other offerings. read more

HaySushi recently moved to a new location down the street from their original location. The original location was a go-to sushi spot for me so I was excited to see what changes were made in the new location. Long story short; great vibes, same great food! FOOD (4.5/5) Our go-to order is always the Spicy Salmon Nori Taco and Black Dragon roll, and we added a Spicy Crispy Salmon roll as well. The spicy salmon taco is a tempura battered and fried nori shell filled with salmon chunks, rice, imitation crab meat and topped with a spicy sauce and scallions. Great texture contrast between the crispy shell and the soft rice and salmon - I thoroughly enjoy every time! There are a variety of filling options. The Black Dragon roll is a classic tempura shrimp roll, packed with other ingredients and topped with unagi eel and unagi sauce. The roll is tightly packed and substantial in size. The Spicy Crispy Salmon roll was not what we expected as it was actually battered then deep fried. I personally didn't really enjoy it as much since the overall temperature of the roll was warmer from being fried, it took away a bit of the charm of raw fish. Their menu is quite extensive and have a bunch of sets, platters, and hot foods also available. AMBIENCE (5/5) Wow the new restaurant is super aesthetic with modern japandi and mid-century furnishings and renos. The space is much larger than the original restaurant with a bar by the entrance, and a dining area that can seat about twice the amount of guests. The lighting is very soft-toned which matches the overall vibe. SERVICE (5/5) Kind, quick, and good service. No issues! VALUE (4/5) They use decent quality fish so you don't taste any fishiness. I think their menu is best tailored for shareables for the table. LOCATION (4.5/5) A short walk away from Sheppard-Yonge station and a decent amount of street parking along Yonge and side streets. OVERALL (4.5/5) Good quality sushi with a modern and vibey ambience. HaySushi can be great for any occasion; date night, with friends, or with family! It has been a frequented spot for me for the last few years and will continue to be on my rotation of North York sushi spots especially with the new renovated location. read more

Came here over the weekend and still dreaming of the food and how delicious it was. We had lunch on the weekend at 1pm, made reservations but it was pretty empty. It ended up getting busier around 2pm so would still recommend reservations if you can plan ahead just incase. The atmosphere felt like an old school diner which was very cute and quaint. Gave it some character and felt a bit more casual. We ordered different dishes and the one mutual comment was how fresh and delicious the food was. Spicy Salmon Nori Taco - massive and very fresh. Loved that the taco was deep-fried nori. There was a lot of rice, but it was complemented well with how much salmon/crab meat you got. Creamy Miso Pasta - I've never had wafu pasta before so I was pleasantly surprised by how tasty this was! It was super comforting and you got quite a bit of shrimp. Atlantic Roll and Crispy Tuna Roll - very fresh, unique and massive. read more

We went to Hay Sushi and had an excellent dinner. For my food report, I use ^ to indicate a half-star and * for a full star. So, ***^ would mean 3.5 stars: ***** The Salmon Nori Taco was fresh and delicious, with perfectly balanced flavours between the raw salmon and "crab meat" salad. The fried seaweed "taco shell" remained firm and crispy, and never got soggy, which I was pleasantly surprised about. The sushi rice was well-seasoned and had the perfect texture. The whole taco was topped with thin slices of onion. 5 stars. (Cost was two for $16.95) ****^ Tuna Poke bowl was also fresh and tasty. Aside from the chunks of tuna, there were plenty of toppings including avocado slices, cucumber sticks, kani, tobiko (flying fish roe), corn, edamame, seaweed salad, and pineapple chunks and not a huge amount of rice. 4.5 stars (Cost was $20.95) Service was great, attentive, patient and helpful at answering questions about the menu. The restaurant is also a very pleasant place to sit, nicely decorated and comfortable, with a good ambience. I definitely want to go back to Hay Sushi to try more nori tacos, sushi, and pretty much everything else. read more

The service was great and I enjoyed the salmon roll from platter B. The other rolls didn't have complimentary flavours and were a miss for me. The red dragon roll was good but the one with so much imitation crab meat inside was not great. Also, I'm not a fan of cream cheese in rolls or asparagus in rolls. Too bad. The miso cream pasta was rich and decadent, not much miso flavour just very creamy. Hard to have it as an entree, it was a good thing we shared it amongst 3 people. read more

I visited here recently after their relocation, which I was not aware of. The new location looks extremely nice and well-organized. I loved how spacious the place is. It seems they've completely changed the theme of the restaurant to something more comfy and cozy, aiming for a higher-end dining experience, whereas previously it felt more like a bar and casual dining spot. Their lunch specials seemed reasonably priced, with many options to try, but I ordered the Sushi Dinner set, which I was extremely happy with. I've always wanted to try their futomaki, and while it tasted more like Korean kimbap, it was still enjoyable. I also loved the portion of rice with the sushi. I hate when places try to fill you up with huge sushi rice portions, but this one was just right. We also ordered a couple of appetizers--chicken karaage and ebi mayo--which came in quite generous portions. Their famous nori taco was good, but extremely filling, as the rice portion was about the same size as the toppings (we got spicy salmon, but there was a ridiculous amount of crab salad on top). The service was excellent. Our server made sure everything we tried met our expectations and kept our water cups filled at all times! Although the food took a bit longer to arrive than expected for lunch service, this could have been because most of the staff were having their lunch on the side. However, we were still very happy with the meal, as the food did not disappoint. read more

I loved the unique menu here! They have a great variety of sushi as well as fusion pasta - all that we had was delicious: * Nori Taco - choice of two for $17.95, I chose the spicy salmon (lots of crab meat, it was pretty spicy) and the tuna (very fresh). Could have used a bit of soy sauce but I did like these, even though my expectations were not too high. The crunchy seaweed wrapper had a good hold on the ingredients. * creamy miso pasta $19.95 was the best!! amazing flavour and the shrimps were so plump and juicy. My bf and I loved this. After a previous positive experience, we came for another weekday lunch. This time, instead of ordering the lunch specials, we opted for two sushi sets -- the traditional Sushi Set, and the Truffle Aburi Sushi Set. The traditional nigiri pieces are of average quality but nothing special, but the torched pieces with truffle salt seasoning are awesome! Overall though, the value is so much better with the lunch special sushi sets, so definitely stick with them when offered (Monday to Friday from 12 to 3 PM). Food: I ordered a nigiri set and a taco, and both were so good! The portions were filling, and the quality of everything was excellent. I don't think I would order the taco again, but it was cool to try. The pricing seemed standard for a sushi restaurant. Service: The service was great - friendly and attentive. My food came out quickly, and the staff made sure I had everything I needed throughout the meal. It's worth noting I came at an odd time (around 4pm), so I was actually the only one there haha. My gf took me here for my bday recently. First off, there's no designated parking lot so you either park nearby using a Green P parking meter/app or on a side street somewhere and then walk over. The resto is very close to the yonge and sheppard intersection. It was busy when we arrived on sunday night but not packed out the wazoo or anything. The waitress told us that their busiest days were usually friday and saturday nights. So we ordered up chicken karaage, nori steak tacos, bluefin tuna (chutoro) sushi, creamy miso wafu pasta, pressed sushi, a signature roll and shared a highball cocktail (it's massive lol). The quality of the food was overall spectacular. I feel like them being a tapas bar, you kinda expect pricey food so the question is, does the quality match the price? And the answer is YES! you definitely get great quality food. The steak in the nori tacos was cooked perfectly (medium rare and so juicy), the scallop on the roll was SOOOO FRESH. The seasoning that the resto uses for the sushi rice is quite aggressive (very vinegary which I like). The creamy miso pasta had a ton of umami in it. They also didn't slap the lazy $25 price tag on it like most italian places so we appreciated that (I'm guessing the current price has already factored in inflation). It was priced at ~ $18. Very fair imo. We wanted otoro sushi (fatty bluefin tuna) but they ran out! (sad face) so we opted for chutoro (medium fatty tuna) sushi instead. It still melted in the mouth so that was awesome. We ordered a slice of cheesecake to round out the meal. It was HUGE lol. Was really full after that cheesecake. Service was great. Our waitress kept checking in on us and asking how the meal was going. English was not her first language clearly but she was really friendly and attentive. I would not hesitate to come back for a special date/occasion! read more
