I can't recommend Hay Sushi enough! I originally went during Summerlicious and ended up going back three times because it was that good. The atmosphere was relaxed, not overly busy, and we were seated quickly without a reservation, which was a great start. I ordered the assorted nigiri and the salmon noodles, and both were fresh, flavourful, and beautifully presented. For dessert, the cheesecake was absolutely incredible, and the matcha tiramisu was just as delicious, definitely worth saving room for both. The cocktails were also phenomenal and paired perfectly with the meal. Considering the quality of the food, drinks, and overall experience, the Summerlicious menu was an amazing value. Came here for Summerlicious a few weeks ago, it was prix fixe $34 for a three course meal. We were a party of five, so we got everything! APPS: Options were mini taco samplers (veggie + spicy salmon), uni mini cones, and chawanmushi (steamed egg with seafood). Favourite here is chawanmushi, tho the others were good too. Uni cones would have been better if it was actual pieces of uni rather than an uni cream. MAINS: Options were tomato salmon tsuyu soba (the viral one), salmon steak teishoku, special sushi set. Favourite here is definitely the salmon soba. Very unique and refreshing, though taste isn't something out of this world. It's what you would think it tastes like - long strings of salmon! DESSERT: Options were matcha strawberry tiramisu, house made sorbet (got the yuzu mojito one), and cheesecake. Surprisingly the sorbet was amazing. The flavour was so good, we thought about getting another on the side. SERVICE: 3/5 tbh. They weren't very welcoming and didn't ask if we wanted anything else (so we weren't able to order another dessert). At the end, just asked if we were ready for the bill. It was just the bare minimum. TIPS: There's Green P Street parking (paid) right outside and along Yonge St. There's also a couple of paid parking garages nearby. Starting at $45, it offered a three course meal dessert which was a great price as most things here are $20+ min. Went with a friend so got to try two different sets from their Winterlicious menu. I ate the following: Appetizers Chawanmushi - steamed egg Mini taco sampler Second course Salmon sashimi Yusuf salmon & double shrimp oshi Third course Sapporo style curry teishoku Sushi set teishoku- assorte nigir set with bluefish tuna, salmon, bream bass etc Dessert Hay Cheesecake Matcha strawberry tiramisu My favourite from the three course meal got to be the main courses. The sushi set had a variety of super fresh Nigri and sashimi, including bluefish tuna, salmon, bream, bass etc. The curry teishoku was so good and flavorful. This curry was served with a super tender chicken thigh with an assortment of seasonal vegetables ( lotus root, mushroom etc). This made the curry super rich and flavourful. Special shout out the Hay Cheesecake - not too heavy and sweet, yet still rich. A must try at this restaurant. Overall, this a very stylish restaurant, comfortable seating with great service. This review is from two visits, the first one I ordered sushi and udon, and the second was sushi and fusion pasta. The sushi was delicious but their creamy miso seafood pasta was the highlight. We got the weekend sushi special it had premium fish. The creamy miso pasta came with generous amount of shrimp and it was plump and cooked perfectly. The udon soup was really basic and i wouldn't recommend it over the pasta. Lobster sushi was huge, along with the other black dragon roll that isn't pictured. Came here during the summer month and the AC was blasting in here - a little too cold if I'm being honest. But I came here with one thing in mind only which was their nori tacos. Here's what I thought: Spicy salmon nori taco 5/5 - Came with mayo, salmon, crab meat, green onion and cucumber. All wrapped in a fried nori taco shell. I loved this! The flavours and textures were to die for. Tuna nori taco 5/5 - Similar to the spicy salmon nori taco, I loved the texture of this as well. Big chunks of tuna pieces and was absolutely delicious. Creamy miso pasta 4/5 - Delicious, creamy and cooked perfectly with their pasta. It comes with black tiger shrimps and topped with nori and scallion. The steak tacos come with 2 per order (also good for sharing) the shell was made of thick crispy seaweed in the shape of a traditional taco shell. Filling from top to bottom was thinly sliced purple onions and chopped green scallions, then the diced steak was seasoned, charred and cooked well done, and the bottom layer was sushi rice, no sauces but still packing lots of flavour and not dry either. The restaurant has a Korean modern atmosphere. We first ordered the Osulluc pear tea and it was very refreshing. Theyre known for their nori taco and their pasta. The tuna norm taco has many chunks of raw tuna seasoned beautifully on a bed of seasoned rice and dressing on top. The miso pasta was very creamy. The miso flavour is very light. It was flavourful especially with the shrimp. Be aware, the menu mentioned veggies, but it's only mushrooms. Their rolls are big and flavourful, and of course their sashimi was fresh. I recently visited Hay Sushi again and they had moved to a beautiful new spot just down the street (still on Spring Garden) where Ichiban sushi used to be. I wish I had taken some interior photos, had I known that there were no updated interior photos on Yelp. The new restaurant is minimalist and laid out very comfortably. We ordered Maze udon, Hwe dupbap, and 2 spicy salmon nori tacos and thoroughly enjoyed all the food. The spicy salmon nori taco was a bit hard to eat and I didn't love that they mixed so much imitation crab meat into the taco filling. The flavour was ok but I wouldn't order this again. The Hwe dupbap and maze udon were both fantastic though. The presentation was lovely and the flavours were bang on. My maze udon had loads of green onion and ground meat with shaved katsuobushi. The egg yolk added such a wonderful creaminess to the sauce and I thoroughly enjoyed this dish. The Hwe dup bap was more predictable but well executed with fresh fish and loads of vegetables. We enjoyed our experience here at the new Hay Sushi location and would definitely return to try their other offerings. read more

The original location was a go-to sushi spot for me so I was excited to see what changes were made in the new location. Long story short; great vibes, same great food! FOOD (4.5/5) Our go-to order is always the Spicy Salmon Nori Taco and Black Dragon roll, and we added a Spicy Crispy Salmon roll as well. The spicy salmon taco is a tempura battered and fried nori shell filled with salmon chunks, rice, imitation crab meat and topped with a spicy sauce and scallions. Great texture contrast between the crispy shell and the soft rice and salmon - I thoroughly enjoy every time! There are a variety of filling options. The Black Dragon roll is a classic tempura shrimp roll, packed with other ingredients and topped with unagi eel and unagi sauce. The roll is tightly packed and substantial in size. The Spicy Crispy Salmon roll was not what we expected as it was actually battered then deep fried. I personally didn't really enjoy it as much since the overall temperature of the roll was warmer from being fried, it took away a bit of the charm of raw fish. The Salmon Nori Taco was delicious, it's not packed with a lot of rice so it won't make you too full. I got the Maki Party Tray A to share with a friend and it was super filling. The one thing I didn't like about this set was the fact that every single roll except for the spicy salmon roll was stuffed with so much crab meat. It made everything borderline taste the same which was a shame. I wasn't a huge fan of the rice paper roll used for the Pink dynamite roll either. I personally wouldn't order this set again. It seems they've completely changed the theme of the restaurant to something more comfy and cozy, aiming for a higher-end dining experience, whereas previously it felt more like a bar and casual dining spot. Their lunch specials seemed reasonably priced, with many options to try, but I ordered the Sushi Dinner set, which I was extremely happy with. I've always wanted to try their futomaki, and while it tasted more like Korean kimbap, it was still enjoyable. I also loved the portion of rice with the sushi. I hate when places try to fill you up with huge sushi rice portions, but this one was just right. We also ordered a couple of appetizers--chicken karaage and ebi mayo--which came in quite generous portions. Their famous nori taco was good, but extremely filling, as the rice portion was about the same size as the toppings (we got spicy salmon, but there was a ridiculous amount of crab salad on top). The service was excellent. Our server made sure everything we tried met our expectations and kept our water cups filled at all times! Although the food took a bit longer to arrive than expected for lunch service, this could have been because most of the staff were having their lunch on the side. After a previous positive experience, we came for another weekday lunch. This time, instead of ordering the lunch specials, we opted for two sushi sets -- the traditional Sushi Set, and the Truffle Aburi Sushi Set. The traditional nigiri pieces are of average quality but nothing special, but the torched pieces with truffle salt seasoning are awesome! Overall though, the value is so much better with the lunch special sushi sets, so definitely stick with them when offered (Monday to Friday from 12 to 3 PM). My gf took me here for my bday recently. First off, there's no designated parking lot so you either park nearby using a Green P parking meter/app or on a side street somewhere and then walk over. The resto is very close to the yonge and sheppard intersection. It was busy when we arrived on sunday night but not packed out the wazoo or anything. The waitress told us that their busiest days were usually friday and saturday nights. So we ordered up chicken karaage, nori steak tacos, bluefin tuna (chutoro) sushi, creamy miso wafu pasta, pressed sushi, a signature roll and shared a highball cocktail (it's massive lol). The quality of the food was overall spectacular. I feel like them being a tapas bar, you kinda expect pricey food so the question is, does the quality match the price? And the answer is YES! you definitely get great quality food. The steak in the nori tacos was cooked perfectly (medium rare and so juicy), the scallop on the roll was SOOOO FRESH. The seasoning that the resto uses for the sushi rice is quite aggressive (very vinegary which I like). The creamy miso pasta had a ton of umami in it. They also didn't slap the lazy $25 price tag on it like most italian places so we appreciated that (I'm guessing the current price has already factored in inflation). It was priced at ~ $18. Very fair imo. We wanted otoro sushi (fatty bluefin tuna) but they ran out! (sad face) so we opted for chutoro (medium fatty tuna) sushi instead. It still melted in the mouth so that was awesome. We ordered a slice of cheesecake to round out the meal. It was HUGE lol. Was really full after that cheesecake. Service was great.
