Katsuya is a Korean chain Katsu restaurant. They have very filling menu items with lots of sauce and sides. The staff is super knowlegeable on food allergies. Their soups/udon are all seafood based and contain shrimp. Their menu clearly indicates all allergen information and the staff was very good at checking in. This location has a pretty private feel, they have high ceilings and can fit 20-30 patrons pretty comfortably. Their unit also sits a half floor above street level, so it feels pretty premium. The kitchen is open concept and you can see in to where they are cooking. They do open at 11:00 and they did have a decent lunch group come in, seems popular. The sauces that came with the set were BBQ and tartar sauce based. The sets comes with cabbage salad as well as pickles to go with the meal. The cutlets are big and filling as well. Our order: - Katsu special set, a lot of food for one person - Pork loin original Katsu, great portion and amount of sauce They also have vegetarian options like cheese katsu and sweet potato. There is also a fish option as well. Great place, good price (10% cash discount), if I'm back, will try their fish or cheese Katsu.

The ambiance is really nice, which I didn't expect from the outside, staff is friendly the food is always delicious and they provide big portions! You could definitely split a meal with someone. Also very reasonable price for downtown Toronto

Super yum, I loved the sweet chili chicken katsu I'd totally recommend! It's a very nice spot and they give you a little miso soup too!

I went here last week with my family for lunch went we were in Toronto for vacation. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The ambiance was chill. The food was good too, however I wasn't really hungry; so I opted to order the Cheese Balls, which were better than I expected. It had a sweet flavor to it, kind of reminds me of an Arepa taste. My brother got the Chicken Katsu and my parents got the Pork Katsu in which we all shared. The only thing they didn't have beverage wise was wine for my father and bottled water for me. But other than that everything was good!

3.5 star! Spot is a bit hidden so the restaurant has a few signs by the door to help direct you. I decided to try the carbonara udon and the cheese crabmeat croquette. The carbonara udon has tempura, mini shrimps, bacon, mushroom, and broccoli. I think the broccoli overwhelmed the dish for me a bit. Perhaps if they reduced that and added more mushroom and bacon I'd like it more? I probably recommend sticking to just their katsu dishes next time. Service was friendly. I received a small soup to enjoy before my meal and if you check in on Yelp app, you can get 1 complimentary soft drink! I think this spot is nice for a casual catchup with friends or casual date. Nice vibe, they play Korean music and food portions are good. I ended up taking home leftovers because I couldn't finish it.

One of the best plates of katsu I have ever had. That was made even better with the carbonara sauce which my husband even liked, despite his usual dissent for "unusual" preparations of his favorite dishes. That was the one meal I didn't mind doing a second time (but didn't get to) during our time in Toronto.

This review is solely based on the carbonara katsu lol this dish was sooo yummy that we had to come back again before we left to fly back home. I still think about this dish to this day. Highly recommend!! Very filling and so flavorful.

The katsu was fried to perfection. It was a good amount of food, I couldn't finish it. The service was a little slow because they only had one waiter and one cook. We got the honey fries and all my friends loved it. It was both sweet and salty - unique.

I haven't tried many katsu restaurants so I can't really compare but Katsuya has some pretty good katsu! Their menu selection is large with different types of "sauces" such as their house sauce, mayo flavours, garlic sweet chilli, Japanese style, and more. They even have katsu stuffed with cheese! They have a selection of appetizers to choose from as well. Their katsu dishes also come with a side of soup, it is normally miso soup but due to low supply chain they replaced it with udon broth. It had a nice bonito dashi flavour and completes your meal! They also offer free refills on the soup if you would like more to wash down your katsu. My go to order is usually their Japanese style Katsu with pork loin. The katsu pieces are cooked well with a crispy batter outside but the meat is still quite juicy on the inside. Their dipping sauce is on the side so you can dip as much as you prefer. They also provide a small bowl of sesame seeds to ground up and add to your dish as well. The whole set comes with ginger, yellow pickled radish, shredded cabbage to cut the grease and a bowl of rice. The portion size is big so I was full by the end of my meal. Staff here are really friendly and service was quick and efficient. They also offer a 10% discount if you pay with cash. I'd come back here if I ever crave katsu! Convenient location across TMU university.

Fish katsu with curry sauce. Crunchy on outside, soft yummy fish flakes inside.

Ordered to-go late dinner upon our arrival to Toronto for vacation. This place was 7-min walk & opened until 10. Ordering by phone was easy, food was ready in 15 minutes. The front door was kind of hidden. The food was ready & packed when we got there. The cashier was friendly. Simple decor inside, more spacious that it seemed from outside. The portions were quite generous, with leftovers for another meal for 2 ppl (there were 4 of us). Everything was delicious for our starving tummies. The curry sauce was very mild, could be a little more flavor for my taste, but perfect for my daughter. Hubby really enjoyed the carbonara sauce. Daughter's fave was the pork katsu. My favorite was the fish katsu. The crabmeat croquettes were DELICIOUS, perfect with its tasty cheesy sauce. This place is definitely worth it, must-try in Toronto downtown.

hmmm... I must admit Katsuya disappointed me a bit. I have been passing by it for 2 years and I didn't have a chance to enter it until today. I noticed its nice decoration and the tremendous recommendation from the yelp, google, etc. The service was great. We could refill the soup, rice and cabbage for free. However, their dishes didn't impress me. The first bowl of rice was dry and hard. I'm very picky at rice. Especially for a restaurant selling Katsu. I think they could've done better!

The menu selections were expertly picked, of course, and gave a good sense of the theme of this Asian fusion food and how the chef thinks. With prices of an upscale dining restaurant, the service didn't feel like it matched up; it was fairly mediocre. Food was a bit of a hit or miss for us too.. Shrimp toast: fun, good texture, could taste the oiliness stronger than I expected. Paired well with the emulsion. Fun guo: super tasty, quite greasy though. I typically don't order fun guo but the texture was a delight to eat. Pork & crab siu mai: this felt like it lacked identity, not really sure I saw the vision. It just felt like curry on a siu mai lol Iberico cha siu: beautiful cut, perfectly tender, good savouriness, no complaints. R&D fried rice: my biggest letdown. Maybe my expectations were set to high. For a house special, I would expect a solid crowd-pleaser. Having each bite feeling mostly like 'crunch' is not what I think of as fried rice nor a favourite for most people. My ideal fried rice focuses on the grains of rice, with substantial bite and flavour in each spoonful. The flavour was most definitely there, don't get me wrong but it was extremely hard to eat more than a bowl. The redeeming qualities were in the flavour and cute little mushroom garden concept. If they had maybe 2x the amount of rice for the ratio of toppings and crunch, I would say this is a delicious and near perfect fried rice. Not bad, but a hefty price tag for a meal that I had really high hopes for.
