Visiting Toronto and found Katsuya on yelp. The restaurant had great reviews. We walked to the restaurant for lunch and was promptly seated when we arrived. The menu is set up to where you pick the entree and then what type of protein you want out of pork loin, chicken, fish, cheese, and sweet potato cheese. I settled on the sweet chili katsu. A piece of chicken arrived on a plate accompanied with rice and shredded cabbage. The chicken was breaded in a light panko like crumb and was half covered in the sweet chili sauce. I ate a couple of pieces and the crisp texture and flavor was wonderful. I had a bite of rice and when I got to the cabbage to my dismay I found a long piece of hair in it. I immediately lost my appetite and all I could think about was how great the two bites of chicken was. I gave up the plate and showed the staff what I found. They offered another plate a couple of times and after I declined a refund was issued. Katsuya. sucks for serving me one of the best pieces of breaded chicken in my life with hair in the food. I'm struggling to hold back the tears now as I write. I did get to try the parmesan fries which were ok. I also tasted the udon which is not one of their stronger dishes. Katsuya is a Korean chain Katsu restaurant. They have very filling menu items with lots of sauce and sides. The staff is super knowlegeable on food allergies. Their soups/udon are all seafood based and contain shrimp. Their menu clearly indicates all allergen information and the staff was very good at checking in. This location has a pretty private feel, they have high ceilings and can fit 20-30 patrons pretty comfortably. Their unit also sits a half floor above street level, so it feels pretty premium. The kitchen is open concept and you can see in to where they are cooking. They do open at 11:00 and they did have a decent lunch group come in, seems popular. The sauces that came with the set were BBQ and tartar sauce based. The sets comes with cabbage salad as well as pickles to go with the meal. The cutlets are big and filling as well. This Korean katsu restaurant is located close to TMU campus and is a great place to grab a largely portioned affordable meal. The interior is spacious and can comfortable seat about 10 groups. The restaurant is located up a short set up stairs, so unfortunately it isn't wheelchair friendly. The staff are attentive, friendly and sat us down quickly. We got the katsu special set and the original katsu which were very big and came out hot and fresh. Both meals came with a miso soup, though note that the broth is made with seafood so my partner could not have it due to dietary restrictions. The set also came with a decently portioned size udon bowl, 2 shrimp tempura, 4 mini side dishes (kimchi, corn salad, pickled daikon, pickled ginger), cabbage salad, rice, sauce and sesame seeds. The original Katsu came with the pork katsu, rice, salad and some sides as well. We were both very full after our meal. The carbonara udon has tempura, mini shrimps, bacon, mushroom, and broccoli. I think the broccoli overwhelmed the dish for me a bit. I haven't tried many katsu restaurants so I can't really compare but Katsuya has some pretty good katsu! Their menu selection is large with different types of "sauces" such as their house sauce, mayo flavours, garlic sweet chilli, Japanese style, and more. They even have katsu stuffed with cheese! They have a selection of appetizers to choose from as well. Their katsu dishes also come with a side of soup, it is normally miso soup but due to low supply chain they replaced it with udon broth. It had a nice bonito dashi flavour and completes your meal! They also offer free refills on the soup if you would like more to wash down your katsu. My go to order is usually their Japanese style Katsu with pork loin. The katsu pieces are cooked well with a crispy batter outside but the meat is still quite juicy on the inside. Their dipping sauce is on the side so you can dip as much as you prefer. They also provide a small bowl of sesame seeds to ground up and add to your dish as well. The whole set comes with ginger, yellow pickled radish, shredded cabbage to cut the grease and a bowl of rice. The portion size is big so I was full by the end of my meal. Staff here are really friendly and service was quick and efficient. They also offer a 10% discount if you pay with cash. I'd come back here if I ever crave katsu! Three words: Cheesy. Katsu. Goodness! I came during a weekday at 12pm (right when they opened) and the place was empty. I was seated immediately and my food came out really fast. I ordered the Original cheese katsu, specifically so I can get a great cheese pull video. It did not disappoint! The cheese was gooey and perfect! I thought the cheese to katsu ratio was great and the original sauce was the perfect addition to the dish. It wasn't heavy like a curry, it was lighter and it balanced out the heavy cheese and fried pork. The katsu itself was pretty good. The pork quality was ehhh and the panko was too fine for me. I prefer crispier katsu. I probably wouldn't get the katsu by itself, but I do like the whole combo together (cheese, katsu, and sauce). I also got the crabmeat croquette which was really good while it was fresh. When it sits for a while, it becomes a bit too creamy and squishy. The Tartar sauce / cheese / crab mixture doesn't hold up well so I recommend ordering this appetizer only if you are dining in. If I visit Toronto again I want to come back and try some of the other katsu sauces! read more

Katsuya used to be one of my go-to places when I was downtown and craving katsu. I haven't been in a few years, but stopped by before a concert recently and it's just as I remembered. The Japanese Katsu is one of the only options without nuts so this is my go-to as I have an allergy. It comes with a tangy dipping sauce, miso soup, cabbage, and rice. I remember the cabbage and soup being refillable for free but I didn't get a refill this visit so I can't say for sure if that is still offered. The salad dressing for the cabbage used to be on the table pre-covid, but now they add it for you before bringing you your food so I found the cabbage quite bitter and underdressed as I used to drench it in sauce aha. Other than the dressing no longer being self-serve, this spot is just as I remembered it!
