Got the original chicken karaage boneless - I appreciate that it comes with 3 dipping sauces so you can try various flavours and not just stick with 1 flavour like at normal fried chicken restaurants. If you're not in the mood for Katsu, there's other itemskke karaage, baked chicken , rice cakes, or udon. They also serve pizza from Pizza Maru which operates from the same premise. However, the menu was hard to read. The service wasn't super friendly - I almost felt like they were hoping we didn't dine in so they can focus on take out orders. We were the only 2 people that were waiting for their dine in orders and the food felt like it came out slow. The ambiance was quiet. Lots of empty seats. Perhaps it was the day we went, but even if the restaurant isn't busy the atmosphere wasn't as welcoming. The katsu was excellent with its light, crisp batter, and the special set came with a great variety of sides plus both rice and a small bowl of udon. The pizza and wings were also fantastic--we ordered the half-and-half pizza with the signature shrimbul (highly recommend if you like a little heat) and Korean bulgogi. The wings were flavorful and delicious as well. Service was decent, though we docked half a star because some drinks on the menu weren't available (only 2 out of the 5 beers listed). We have not been at katsuya in a long time as they close a lot of different locations. So it was nice to see that they were still open, and my girlfriend loves their crab cheese ball. We went around lunch 2 o'clock in the afternoon on a weekday and it was pretty empty. Price is definitely went up. It seems to be a combination of three restaurants that serves Korean fried chicken, Korean pizza and the Katsu. There was staff working, but it was a little hard to get their attention, but they did come check on us from time to time. They did play music, but it was not too loud. We were able to speak pretty easily. Most importantly, the food it tasted the same nothing changed. The portion seems to have gone smaller and the amount of sauce you get seems to be quite minimal. The garlic did taste a little burnt rather than toasted so I left like a bitter aftertaste. read more

This place is on Yonge street near Centrepoint mall. There are a few parking spots. We got lucky and got the last spot. The place is bigger than I thought. Lots of seats, all booths which is nice. Lots of deals also on the walls for frontline staff like police, firefighters (except nurses, they're "not frontline" enough). They have 13% off for cash pay, so tax free. Service is a bit slow here but it's tolerable. The waitresses are really nice. The Katsuya was honestly SO DELICIOUS! The breading is light and the right crisp. The chicken was also tender, not bad at all. They gave us the wrong wings instead of what we ordered which was the bulgogi wings (forgot to take a pic). We ate one of the wings and the server came back to let us know and took it back. They apologized, brought the right wings, took a while so they said immediately that it's on the house. Very kind of them. One of the wings though wasn't cooked to be honestly... maybe they rushed it? We didn't tell them or take it back, we weren't paying for it. I used to go to Katsuya every month, but because they closed in Markham, I haven't been able to go. But when I learned that the north York location had free parking, I went immediately. The restaurant is large and roomy with many available booths. All the tables were kept spotless, and the waiter was always ready to assist. In this Katsuya, it was combined with Pizza Mary, giving plenty of options. But this day I ordered the pork loin Cheese Carbonara Pork Loin Katsu, as well as the Cheese Crab Croquette, which was my non negotiable for myself as it was my favourite. Prior to our meals, we were given the complimentary soup. And it hit the put as always. The cheese crab croquette came out first and they were as good as I remember, maybe even better as they put lots of sauce on the top. Staff were friendly. 4 different katsu to try for this promo. Original, Japanese, curry and sweet chili. Came with small bowl of soup and our katsu came quickly. The sesame in a mortar and pestle nice touch but doesn't add much to the food on the original flavor katsu as it gets stuck in the bowl. All katsu came with rice and cabbage and small yellow radish. The katsu was a large portion crispy light the pork was tender could cut with chop sticks ( though I'd prefer an actual knife to cut the bigger pieces). The sauces were nice curry tasted like golden curry cubes, original had a sweeter slight tomato taste to it was very good and the Japanese style all crispy no sauce on top instead had a plum sauce on side. I did find the sauces were good and would prefer it on the side as it would make the katsu soggy. I would recommend and come back to try other items on their menu. Outside there is a small parking area in front of the store fully parked. Large waiting area with some seating. The table closest to front is the windy cold seat as there are no double doors and wind gets pulled in. Booths seat by the window other table and chairs seats. Located in a strip mall, the parking lot is super tight so you may have to find street parking. It's a bit dim inside and when we asked for ice water for the kids, they said they didn't have any! We then asked for just room temp water without ice and that they didn't have that either! We got the following: Katsuya Udon Katsuya Special Set Carbonara Katsu Everything was just OK but nothing to write home about. The katsu was a flakier breading that actually made it taste oiler. We ordered the following: The Pizza Maru Seafood Bay 16" pizza: This pizza was huge! It had a sweet ranch sauce, cheese. crab meat, shrimp, ham, pineapple, onions, mushroom, bell peppers, corn and sriracha mayo. Overall it was an OK fusion pizza. It was a bit different than what I'm used to since it was sweeter than we thought. 3/5 The Katsuya pork loin Katsu: This is their signature dish, and never a disappointment. The pork was tender and juicy, and was deep fried to absolute perfection! It came with a sesame sauce coleslaw and a side of rice. The Worcestershire sauce was slightly sweet and fruity, which perfectly complements the katsu. All in all, a great experience! 5/5 Highly recommend! The Boneless Chicken Karaage: This was a bit of a disappointment. For the same price as the katsu, it didn't come with any sides and the portion was quite small (1 lb). I got the sauce on the side and I got their original house sauce because I am not a fan of soggy katsu haha. I can never eat it quick enough for everything to stay crispy! Sad to see a great chain fall to such disgrâce. We came in for a weekday dinner and it took 10 min to get seated. Once seated, it took another 20 min to order. Our go to Katsuya is the Scarborough location which feels so much more homey than this north york location. This location leaves so much to be desired from a badly laid out space, under-staffing and drafty windows that made the entire experience so unpleasant. The food was good as it mostly held up to the Katsuya standard but a lot of the menu items were not available and the meals were no longer served with a complimentary miso soup. Went an hour before closing, and there were only two other tables seated. Ordered a carbonara pork katsu and the snow one. Waited 10 to 15 mins and when the food arrived, we found the sauce-covered half of the katsu to be a bit too soggy. The rest that was uncovered was crispy, but it wasn't hot. The restaurant has a new open kitchen design but yet the interior is very run down. The material used to renovate the restaurant was so poor quality that it looks falling apart. The table we seated was very sticky due to the lacquer painted on it. Which felt terrible. The service was very so so, except for offering o take photo of our group, they weren't very attentive. At peak dinner hour, the employees were eating their dinner, food from next door, and eating them next to us. The worst of it has to be the food. I honestly have no idea why this got such a review on Google and on here. This is not authentic Japanese Katsu, then why named it using Japanese name? The method and bread used for frying the cutlet is not the Japanese style. The sauce used is overly thick and sweet. The cutlet is not moist enough and lack of the meat flavor. The karage is not karage, it is just chicken deep fried. The dishes weren't served together. They cooked the udon first, served it first, and while the set has two bowl of soup udon, they were all made at the same time, but these weren't soaked in soup for 10 minutes waiting for the cutlet sets to complete. The result soup udon were horrible with the udon already mushy. The only good thing perhaps is the portion, it was generous. But if I want to eat a lot, I could go to all you and eat buffet. I purchased an order of their pork tender with carbonara sauce, and an order of chicken katsu with curry sauce. With 15% tips, I paid about $31 which I would say is a great deal (cause my only criticism of this place since the beginning is that it is a little pricey). Everything was packaged for me with utensils for my pickup as previously mentioned. I really liked the trays that they packaged the food in! Very presentable - the Katsu, rice and salad were in a tray, sauce in a separate foam container, and a miso soup served the same way. I saw a lot of good yelp reviews and decided to give it a try. It was a 3 star experience. We came here on a weekend night and waited for a few minutes at the entrance for our table to be cleaned up. They were clearly understaffed. We only saw one waiter running around in the dining area the whole time, although he was quite fast and efficient. We ordered the chicken katsu original and white snow chilli pork katsu. It came with salad, rice and miso soup. You can refill the soup for unlimited times but the rice only once. The rice actually was offered half of the portion compared to other restaurants offering katsu. So it cancelled out the refill part. Did they think rice was too expensive to offer? The flavour of the food now. On one hand, the miso soup and the original katsu sauce was lack of flavour. On the other hand, the White snow chilli sauce was too heavy. That was to say, what they benchmarked for was not good at all. Nevertheless, the thickness of the breading and the deep fried temperature and time control were perfect. The meat tasted pretty tender and cutlets were quite thick. I must admit, that I am not a katsu connoisseur, but I feel that this place really hits a lot of things right on the mark. There is very limited parking in the front of the restraunt, and this is located on the west side of Yonge street. Upon entering, the restaurant is mainly a wooden themed decor. The menu consists of several variations of katsu (breaded cutlet), where you can choose several different cuts of pork or chicken. The general starting price is $15.50 and up, and this includes a very large katsu (I would say about 10-12 inches in length, and another half and inch thick through out), shredded cabbage salad, pickled ginger, sauce of your choice, rice, and a miso soup. NOTE: The miso soup, and cabbage are unlimited refills. So if you want to fill up on things other then rice, this would be a great place. The cutlet, as I mentioned is quite large and I must say very well done. When it comes out, its breaded with panko crumbs, which gives it a nice prickly crunchy texture - Not just a basic breading. Also you dont really notice too much oil at all on it, as I never saw any glistening on it. There are a number of combinations of sauces that you can try, and my partner and I ended up trying the curry one for myself, and she got a spicy cabornet (spicy cream based, with some small bits of sea food). Everything over all was quite tasty, but what really pushes my review up is the unlimited refills and the sheer portion size. If you are a big eater, you will not be dissapointed. If your a medium size eater, your definitely going to have left overs for lunch the next day. There is also a 5% discount if paying in cash which is a nice touch. Overall, I really find it difficult to fault this place. The service was prompt enough, food was flavorful, portion size was extremely satisfying and for the price you pay is definitely fair.
