Donburi is another restaurant which I noticed when I came to the Commerce Gate plaza for the first time. In a plaza full of Chinese restaurants, a Japanese restaurant standing there is eye-catching. However, I never had a chance to visit it until today. My wife got off earlier so we came here to have lunch. The first thing I noticed is that the whole restaurant is filled with manga-and-anime elements . The TV was playing an anime, the walls were full of drawings based on famous anime characters. "It must be very popular among anime-manga lovers in this region" I thought. I found the drawing papers were provided by the restaurant on the side and I guess they will mount whatever you draw. It has a daily special every day, it was chicken teriyaki don on that day, so we ordered one Chicken Teriyaki Don and one signature Beef Don . The Beef Don is a bit salty to me, but I couldn't deny that it's very tasty. My wife also loved their Chicken Teriyaki Don. Generally speaking, they taste just like what we expect from a Japanese-flavor meal. I also found it's a local business. It's not a chain store like the famous Yoshinoya (吉野家). I guess it wanted to copy Yoshinoya's style at the beginning, but it has already made its unique way in GTA and brings Japanese culture lovers joy and a place to hang out. I was in the area around dinner, and decided to drop in. Rice and something sounded pretty good! It's a clean restaurant in one of the malls around Highway 7 and the Leslie/Beaver Creeks. Some customer art adorns the walls, it gives it a nice friendly vibe. Service was quick and efficient. I got chicken katsu curry and a side of tsukemono. When it came, the portion looked a bit small, but it turned out to be very filling. The curry had a tiny kick to it, but it was sweeter, like a typical Japanese curry sauce. The chicken was juicy, and it wasn't greasy. I like sprinkling tsukemono on top after a few bites. It was nothing amazing, but it was a clean and simple pickle. And of course some obligatory shredded cabbage and mayo. Finally, they have matcha beer, made with Sapporo. It tasted much like you would expect. I actually enjoyed it. I tried the chicken omurice as well, which was just okay, the dish had too much ketchup and sauce which didn't help. After we played a claw game near by, we were walked around for dinner. Don food is my favorite, enough rice and meat for my husband. Haha. There were 3 or 4 tables and 1 server, when we walked in with a stroller. She was nice to give us a table for 4. Stroller was put in between two tables, which was not blocking anyone. We had the signature Beef Don and Perpanyaki Chicken, which both were on the rice and have a bowl of miso soup. My chicken dish in Chinese was like on iron pan. Somehow it means the dish made on iron pan in kitchen. Both dishes came fast. Chicken dish had more veggies than beef dish. The taste of both dishes were good. Traditional taste. Pretty decent Donburi place - pricing is a bit higher than expected, but the staff was on top of their game when it came topping up water. We used to eat here every now and then but haven't in a few years. We recently came on a weekday for lunch. There were a few tables occupied, but it wasn't overly busy. I'm a bit surprised that there were parking spots available and we didn't have to use the underground parking garage. For those that are anime fans, there are two TVs playing different anime, and there's fan art covering the walls by the booths. Remember to check in on Yelp for a scoop of green tea ice cream and let the server know if you use Vicinity. We were a little too ambitious and ordered two rice bowls. We ended up taking home rice that was almost the equivalent of one rice bowl. Next time, we'll go with one rice bowl and appetizers. We found that the spicy tuna was on the salty side and that the BBQ chicken rice bowl wasn't hot, only warm. A very convenient spot to visit for a decent meal, they are open pretty late too. I like the sauce on the omurice and I believe most mains come with miso soup - this portion is pretty fair but I know that some of the other bowls have a lot more rice than the ratio of meat. Super children friendly too, with lots of space and scrap paper and pencil crayons to keep our kids busy all evening. We ordered the beef donburi and pork katsu donburi and a side of curry ($3) to maximize the meat on the main donburis. Loved the sauce and rice combo. It has been a long while since I last visited Donburi with my last visit about 5-6 years ago as it was a nice late night snack/meal option. But after my most recent visit in Dec 2022, I was left heavily disappointed. We visited as a 10 person group to an empty restaurant. Naturally we were seated quickly and given iced water on a fridgid winter day. We asked for tea and they could only bring us sole cups of hot water (not even a teapot). We for the most part ordered rice bowls/dons (in the restaurant's namesake) and a few apps. Most of my disappointment was with the dons as they were $12-16 each and it was served as a HUGE bowl of white rice with very little protein and very little sauce. The saving grace was that the little protein and sauce that was served was quite tasty. The karaage app was not bad and I think ended up being my favourite item of the night. The servers were nice but not proactive since they never asked us how things were or came to refill our waters without being asked (bear in mind the empty restaurant with no other patrons). I probably won't be back for a while unless it's a last option in the area. Super sad to see a go-to spot in days-past regress into an overpriced mediocre restaurant. read more

Came here on a Saturday for an early dinner with friends. The restaurant was not super busy so we opted to eat inside, though they have a patio option that is make-shift as it's in the parking lot. As far as precaution and safety measures, they seemed to be just ok.. Nothing stood out where I felt super safe like I have at some other restaurants. [Review was based on experience weeks ago] I had this placed bookmarked for a while and when we got to the plaza to find something to eat, I wanted to try this place out. We decided to order the katsu curry, donburi and zaru soba. We and another table of people were the only ones in the store at that time so I supposed it was not as busy but there was a wait for the food. Everything but the zaru soba came to our table but I was silently glad that I did because I didn't think I could eat two dishes. Portions were okay, my partner thought it was not worth the price. As for the food itself, the katsu was good but it was a little overcooked. I found the rice very wet and clumpy? It was like it part congee, if that makes sense. If I was able to put -1 star I would. I came here ordering the unagi donburi and I was quite disappointed. 5 pieces of eel and the rest was just rice. If you want eel, get the Umami don, it tastes so much better, cheaper and it also includes 2-3 shredded pieces of eel. This was a hard L. DO NOT get the unagi don. You have been warned. Food: Why go to a restaurant called Donburi and eat something other than their specialty? For anyone who doesn't know, donburi is a Japanese rice bowl dish. I had a skewer and the teppanyaki chicken don which comes with miso soup. YUM! Service: The service was good. The server took the time to answer questions since this was the first visit for most of us. I love that the water was refilled several times during the meal. Payment: The prices are reasonable. However, at the end of the meal, we were told that they only accept cash or debit, no credit cards. They should have told us that at the beginning or have a sign posted at the entrance. When we complained, it turns out they do accept credit cards after all. I understand that they are trying to avoid the processing fee on credit cards but I think this should be viewed by the owner as a cost of doing business. Simple and consistent interior, I like how they have a wooden/modern theme to have that Japanese feeling to it. They also have TVs that were playing anime, which is a nice additional feature. Good service - staff are nice and friendly. I went with a friend that also has a child and they try be engaging to make a good experience. Food Went here for lunch, not sure if the menu/prices change for dinner. But I like the variety of katsu, donburi, curry options available. Tried the chicken Oyako Don - which is basically Chicken, egg, sliced scallions all simmered together on top of rice. Overall very consistent and good portion size for about ~$11. Chicken was tender and mixed well with the egg. Comforting in terms of taste. My friend had the Tuna Tataki Don (~$14) - which is also good in portion size and consistent for taste. The items we tried: 1) Unagi Don - Pretty good, not too saucy, good amount of unagi meat, came with some cabbage, pickled veg, and a bit of pickled ginger (the pink ones that usually come with sushi & sashimi). 2) Shiitake Don - This one was on the salty side, but it was a good mix of different types of mushrooms with eggs on rice. 3) Cuttlefish - Really good!! 4) Ikayakai (whole grilled squid) - Not my favourite. This place has amazing food and service. The servers are very attentive and constantly refilling your waters. They have a very simple menu but all the dishes I've tried are delicious. The squid was made with a perfect balance of chewiness, toughness and taste. The katsu was crunchy throughout and complimented very well with the curry and rice. The restaurant has a very good vibe. They play a lot of anime shows in the background and play a bunch of k-pop songs. I would definitely come back here to try out their other dishes. Don't know what to eat? Donburi is your spot! I've been here twice and each time was great. Had a chill Sunday dinner here with my partner and there weren't much people so we were seated right away. The food here is very filling and sold for a great price! We ordered takoyaki and spicy gyudon fries to start. I ordered the gyudon bowl with cabbage and tofu instead of rice, my partner ordered the bbq chicken bowl. They give you complimentary miso soup (which is honestly one of the best miso soups I've had!). The takoyaki was delicious! The sauces they pair on top are a nice addition to deepen those flavours. Definitely recommend trying out the spicy gyudon fries! It's a great appetizer to test out the flavours since it's very similar to the gyudon bowl I ordered. The tofu in my gyudon bowl were cut into cubes and were super light and crisp, despite having dressing all over them. I recommend substituting the rice for the cabbage and tofu if you don't want something too heavy. My partners bbq chicken bowl had a creamy dressing (possibly Japanese mayo?) which was a nice contrast! It was definitely a lot of sauce, would've been nice if they added something sweet or pickled to cut through all the creaminess. But flavour wise, it was amazing. We did notice that the miso soup and takoyaki weren't that hot, leading us to believe they weren't very fresh. We enjoyed them anyways since the flavour made up for it! They have free wifi and plenty of booths, making it a great hang out spot for big groups. They have a wall full of drawings which give it a unique interior, but it was fun to see all the different kinds of art. read more

Donburi is one of my favourite restaurant in Commerce Gate to grab a quick bite. Their Japanese Rice Bowls are absolutely comforting and satisfying, and service is always friendly and courteous. The atmosphere at this restaurant is causal, spacious, and welcoming. Gyudon beef bowl is probably the most famous type of donburi, and it is my all time favourite go-to dish at Donburi. Gyudon features thin slices of beef simmered with onions in a mildly sweet broth, and served over a bed of Japanese rice. I can seriously eat this all day lol. Other items I enjoy are Kalbi udon, Pork cutlet on rice, and Onigiri rice balls :) Yes, you can tell how much I love rice lol. The owners are very innovative, and often times they will come up with new creations for the customers. Items are usually available for a limited time only... so catch them whenever you can ^^ I recall the Soft Shell Crab Tacos, Cake Omakase, Polar Beer, and Matcha Beer. But the most memorable one would probably be the Unicorn Rainbow Omurice - definitely points for creativity! I also enjoy watching the Anime playing in the background; I tend to stay longer than I should because I am so into the show! I often prefer to sit at the booth because there is an outlet next to the wall (my phone always dies!). Surprisingly, the outlet is not under but at table level (+1 for that!). This place is around the corner from my childhood home and even though I never considered it an "OMG! Must have!" type of place, I seem to end up here EVERY TIME I visit home. Every. Single. Time. Which is particularly surprising since I can't go here with most of my family because they are afraid of trying Japanese food. This place is so fairly priced and the food is good. I have enjoyed the Chicken Omurice, the Gyuu Curry Rice, and both the Chicken and Pork Katsu Curry Rice. I have also tried the Oyako Don but I much prefer the Omurice if I am feeling a dish with chicken and eggs. In addition to the bowl, I usually also get a side which is typically one of the skewers. My go-to is Chicken Katsu Curry Rice with a Wasabi Beef skewer because it is simple but awesome. Most of the dishes I have tried I have enjoyed. The exceptions are the Oyako Don and the Beef Tataki. With that said, these dishes were not bad. I just have had better elsewhere or prefer something else instead. The service is always quick. They also are attentive enough that you typically aren't waiting for anything but not so attentive that you feel annoyed by people checking on you. The price is awesome. It really is relatively cheap and the portions are good. One thing that I don't love is they stopped taking credit card. I don't know if they have signage to that effect but the first time I went after they made this change, a friend of mine had to pay for my meal on her debit card and I had to e-transfer the money. It was fine but something worth knowing. I withheld a star because you cant pay with credit and there have been some menu items that I didn't love but if you are in Thornhill and looking for good eats at a great price, Donburi is an awesome choice. read more

We narrow down our dinner choices last night between Kinton Ramen or Asian Legend. Both located at Commerce Gate plaza so we figured that we can decide when we get there. I couldn't believe all the Asian food places in this plaza. This is definitely a plaza for foodies! As soon as we saw this place, we decided immediately that this is it. I didn't even know that this place existed. Finding the best Gyudon (Japanese beef bowl) is definitely on my "To-Do List". The Gyudon for $12.50 is a little pricey but it was really good. Totally worth it! It would have been nice if they added complementary pickled red ginger instead of charging a $1. We also ordered the grilled squid which was nicely spiced and the seaweed salad was refreshing topped with fish eggs and a light mayo dressing. I was a little disappointed with Katsudon (deep fried pork cutlet), salty and over cooked. We'll be back as there are still more dishes to try. I don't think I would come back to this place. The food was as bland, nothing special about it. When I walked in, I thought this place was pretty cute when I walked in. Very aesthetically pleasing. However, I ordered the katsu donburi. It was sort of bland. The egg looked sort of not cooked as there was still the clear liquid. We also ordered chicken wings. The one I had was not seasoned and literally tasted like nothing??? Another issue I have is with the service. One of the ladies was attentive, another was not so much. I think her friends probably came to the place and then she spent like a good amount of time chatting with them. Looking for a late night bite to eat, my friend and I came here for fast food that isn't fast food (ie McDs). Ordered the BBQ Chicken Donburi - it was ok - it didn't blow my socks off. Perhaps b/cit was later at night the BBQ chicken wasn't moist (yup used the most hated word out there...lol). I just felt overall it was lacking some flavour. But it was quite filling for me - I had to take some home. But of course it's me so I usually end up taking my food home as the portions are too big for me. The staff were all friendly and the place was clean.
