Umami House is a great spot for a good deal. We ordered three meals and later got a dessert to share, and the bill came to be about $62. The food is tasty and though the interior is simple, they have a couple interesting decorations around. There's a little store in the front with a bunch of Japanese snacks and treats that you could pick up on your way out too! While I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again, I think it has great value per dollar for a sit-down meal. read more

I ordered a popcorn chicken bento box, a chicken yaki udon and a California maki. They had a promo 50% off bubble tea if you ordered a bento so I got a regular milk tea with tapioca. For bubble tea I usually get 30% sugar everywhere, I got 25% this time and there wasn't much taste to it so I would recommend to do 50%. This restaurant is solid. This is my third time visiting and I've enjoyed it each time. Came here for lunch during a weekday. We didn't have to wait long to be seated. Service was still very courteous and attentive. The lunch specials are great value. I ordered the salmon teriyaki bento box, tempura lunch, beef teriyaki and salmon poke bowl. All dishes come with miso soup. All were priced from $12-17. Not sure how long this will be on for. And you have to pay cash or debit card to order off this lunch special menu. The only thing is it took a little longer than expected for our food to come out. Not sure why. And my daughter had to wait extra for her beef ramen. Previously I'd had some of their party trays as take out, but this was my first time dining in. At the entrance there's a small shop selling some Japanese foods as well as sushi grade fish. Once you walk past it you enter the restaurant. It's nothing fancy but the fish was fresh and the prices were reasonable. There was also a promotion going on at the time to get some free items at certain spend levels. Overall it was very good value for our large group! The service was friendly and attentive. There is a convenience mart and fish market attached to the restaurant selling Japanese goods. Some menu items were unique such as different baked noodles with cheese on ramen or spaghetti, lobster uni spaghetti, crab claws, chirashi donburi, donburi and rice bowls, such as unagi with cheese on rice and poke bowls. The bento boxes were decent. We ordered the tofu teriyaki bento and the salmon teriyaki bento. Both came with spring rolls, few pieces of California roll, salad and miso soup. For drinks the mango passionfruit* fruit tea & lychee peachy fruit tea were quite good. Staff are super friendly, very hard-working. The server is very polite. We got a sushi boat. It was a surprise when it serve. There were ice smoke in the glass serving plate instead of sushi boat. This party tray was $40 and bentos for dinner are around $15-18, cannot find that price anywhere for the flavours and quality that you get! They were the usual assotment of salmon, tuna, crab, white fish, shrimp. Next came the bento box. Came with 2 shrimp and mixed veggie tempura. also 6 california rolls and 2 spring rolls. I thought this box ok a little heavy with the grease and there was a big portion of rice. Id probably choose another box if I go back. My friend ordered the chicken teriyaki box and she said she really liked the teriyaki sauce on the chicken. There is a medium amount of seating in the restaurant and parking in the plaza is limited. Servers were attentive and friendly. Prices however are reasonable i found and they offer a 10% cash discount. A hidden gem on the cusp of Scarborough and North York. I visited with a few friends on a Friday night and it was pretty busy - we waited about an hour, but we were a pretty big group of 8. I got the Dynamite Maki set and asked them to torch the assorted sushi ($3 surcharge) and it's the perfect amount of food. I'm shocked at the low average reviews. However, I think all the lower reviews are mainly from over two years ago, and my recent visit around Mother's Day was very good. The front of the house is a small fish market, so you can buy the supplies needed for a sushi night in. When we dined in, the sushi tray was beautifully displayed with dry ice smoke pouring out of the plate. The fish was fresh. We also got another specialty roll set where we could choose up to six rolls from their specialty rolls menu. The rolls were massive and tasty and had a great ingredients-to-rice ratio. It wasn't too busy when we went there on a weekend, and it was quite spacious, brightly lit, and clean. I'm giving it five stars because it surely deserves at least four stars based on my recent experience, so I'm hoping this will bring the average up to reflect what the experience is like now. Don't let the overall reviews on this place deter you from a great sushi meal. Finally gave this place a try as we live nearby. My overall impression of this place ain't bad. Their price is very decent, so no complaints there. Food wise, also not bad. Place is welcoming despite this. The Miso soup was good but it was lukewarm. Salad was good too with the Japanese dressing. We ordered the sashimi appetizer- I loved this. Good selection of sashimi. Ribs bento was good as well, came with rice, spring rolls and maki. The popcorn chicken was just ok, not as crispy. But when I got home (about 1 hour after I picked up), the iced melt and all the sashimi are kind of soaked into the melted ice, which is not very good. The 2.5 rating confuses me. I've been here three times now and while you're not going to get the finesse you find at an omakase, you're getting pretty decent quality here, especially for what you pay. I've ordered in from Skipthedishes once, and I've eaten in twice. On Skip, if you spend over $20, you get free delivery. When the udon carbonara is $10 on Skip, you do it. They don't skimp on the bacon or the mushrooms (shimeji mushrooms, I think), and they have the uncooked egg yolk on top as well as button mushrooms. I haven't been at Menami in quite a while but Umami House's carbonara udon blows my memory of Menami's out of the water, and it costs about half as much. The portion was decent too. I've ordered this twice now and it inspires me to order some of their other fusion pastas. They also have a deluxe sashimi set for $24 that has 20 pieces of sashimi in it. The variety is quite nice for the price. I've had uni (urchin), hotate (scallop), and botan ebi (think sweet shrimp but bigger) in the same set along with more standard things like salmon and red tuna. Their red tuna is surprisingly nice too. I've also had their bluefin toro special ($18 for 4 pieces) and while the pieces are unusually large and somewhat thin (which I guess balances it out in terms of portion), it melts in your mouth and I think it's very worth the price. They've also got promotions running all the time, like a variety of appetizers at $5.99 if you buy a beer, and in December, they had 15% off if you pay with cash. They also have lunch specials from Mon-Fri and those are pretty good deals too. read more

I was an infrequent regular when this was Sashimi House. Knew the employees, they recognized us and knew our favorites. Frequented this place before my kids were born. Just to make the direct comparison, my daughter (9yo) and I ordered our favorites: Red Dragon Roll, Agedashi Tofu, Shrimp Tempura Udon, Crab Sashimi and green tea ice cream. Red Dragon Roll was weak very little salmon - but now I'm thinking they messed up the order. Either way, not impressed. The Agedashi tofu, tempura and crab Sashimi were all decent. But really how can you mess that up. Udon soup was covered in vegetables that my daughter was never going to eat. We both agreed it was nicer when it was simpler, broth noodles seaweed tofu. But maybe they have to justify the increase in price. And the green tea ice cream had coconut. Not something my daughter enjoyed either. The differences seems very millennial including the staff. Meh. Decided to give this place a chance a little while back cause I was around the area. The inside is a bit run down and old looking, so definitely was not renovated when it changed hands. Service was iffy as they don't check in on you for water or tea and are a bit slow in terms of getting food out. Ended up ordering the salmon teriyaki lunch bento. The salmon itself was ok, lacked a bit of sauce but was otherwise alright. The california rolls tasted a bit mushy with the crab meat being the main culprit here. Spring rolls and rice were about as you would expect so nothing to complain about there. I used to visit a lot when it was Sashimi House and decided to try Umami House when it opened. Initially I was excited by the prices of certain items such as the dragon roles and the donburi was so reasonably priced. Over time certain items have already gone up in price by a dollar. I was always pretty pleased by my food but I find that it is inconsistent. Some days the miso soup is very watery and lacks flavour. Sometimes you can see the freezer burn on the salmon. I got sick once after which, I suppose is always a risk but definitely puts me on edge when ordering from here. I'll probably give it a few more shots. read more

This is our go-to Japanese place during the pandemic. I don't know why the ratings are so low, they get a TON of takeout business right now. It's always busy... It's a typical Japanese restaurant and found the fish to be pretty fresh. We typically order the chirashi don ($amazing selection and value), shrimp tempura, torched sushi (my fave), salmon sashimi (pretty thick cuts and fresh), and scallop sushi. We've tried one of the speciality rolls (can't remember which one now), but it was good and pretty big. There is also a 15% cash discount for takeout. Call ahead - the wait time is around 20-30 min. DO NOT get their deep fried katsu cutlets though... these are absolutely horrid here... almost like they deep fry it twice so it's super hard and stale tasting. Too bad, but lesson learned! read more
