This restaurant has been here for a really long time, maybe 15-20 years. My family and I used to come here a lot but not so much recently because we moved. Luckily I had a chance to return the other week and it was still great. The servers are very polite and attentive. They also have a variety of combo options for meats, sushi, and sashimi. I often used to get the teriyaki combo but their rolls are surprisingly good too. They also often have extra bonus dishes on the house such as salmon collars like when I visited, or bonus rolls. Their small noodle appetizer is also a nice touch. The sashimi was good and they allow minor substitutions which was definitely appreciated. One small observation was their shrimp tempura was actually using fried shrimp batter but it was still yummy. If you're in the area and looking for sushi, they've done it for a long time and do it well. I hope to have an opportunity to come back again soon. read more

This restaurant is awesome. I had almost given up on sushi in Toronto - there aren't a lot of spots that I enjoy anymore. Everything here just hit the spot, from the service, to the environment, to the sushi. It looks non-descript outside but there is more than meets the eye. We ordered the small sushi and sashimi boat ($59). It came with around 40 pieces - 6 maki rolls, around 15 sushi pieces, and the remainder sashimi. There were various types of fish, my favorite was the tuna. Some of the fish tasted more fresh than others, but I wasn't too bothered by that. I would definitely reccommend this boat - the presentation is top tier and the price is reasonable. We also ordered a chicken karaage as a starter, which I didn't 100% enjoy - it was tasty but not what I expected. The outer shell is a bit hard for my liking and there wasn't enough sauce. I'd get something else next time. Also appreciated the free edamame to start. Overall it was a very fullsome meal and ended at around $100 including tax and tip for two people. This restaurant is super cute. We made a reservation and had our own private table with half a door which adds a nice extra touch for a date night. The Service: The service is really good. I found the staff very attentive and they made our food very quickly. The Food: The food was really good. The sushi was fresh and we both enjoyed our meals. This is a super cute place that's just perfect for a date! It's smaller and more intimate than neighbouring Matsuda. There are semi-private rooms that enclosed with walls and entrance curtains. Most of them seemed to seat up to 4 people. This place is a la carte ordering with lunch specials that occur every day except for Saturday. I ended up ordering a 10 piece salmon sashimi lunch special that comes as a bento box. The box had an assortment of sides in there including a green salad that was really nicely dressed with a ginger sauce, cold japchae noodles with peppers and onions, a scoop of white rice, and two pieces of perfectly golden deep fried fish with a light aioli on top. Celebrating my best friend's birthday with her family, we had reservations for seven people and were placed in a separated room. Although it was quite small, it kept everyone intimate and engaged with one another throughout the dinner. The decorations and ambience of this cute dainty restaurant, made me feel as though I wasn't in Toronto for the time being - and I loved it. The menu had a variety of options to choose from and I ended up ordering the 'Black Dragon Roll' and 'Takoyaki' because I'm familiar with both and know it's always delicious! First time trying this gem, and it was absolutely worth it! This place makes authentic sushi like you have never tried elsewhere! In terms of the interiors, it is a centric with little booths with curtains hanging down, they are nice for a little private group, or there are a few tables scattered around. It may need some renovations or adding a little Mondrian touch to it. However, this is not too important compared to the quality of food in this place. We ordered Edamame which was pretty good and shrimp tempura which was OK As for sushi, we ordered the Green Dragon, lobster salad Maki roll and the short beef ribs roll The presentation was beautiful, and we received way more rolls than we had anticipated based on the menu. Thanks to Yelp, I found this little gem! Ordered takeout a la carte to cheer up my BF who had a terrible day (sushi is his fave). Service was polite and friendly. I ordered a California roll, TTR roll, green dragon, Diablo roll, yam/avocado, and two miso soups. The rolls were prepared fresh in front of me and very quickly too! I had about a half hour drive home (thanks rush hour traffic!) but the sushi was still absolutely delish! Our timidly respectful and kind waitress spoke with a quiet, soft voice, yet she enunciated clearly and was very friendly and attentive to us despite there being a lot of other customers. Her service was absolutely stellar. The sushi would take longer than usual, so she gave us appetizers on the house and, at the end of the meal, ice cream on the house. For our meal, we ordered Pork Katsu Donburi, which was a decently sized serving, and the quality of the katsu was not bad at all, though it could be more crunchy for my taste. We also ordered Medium Sushi and Sashimi boat, which was filled with tasty rolls and mouth-watering well-sized slices of sashimi. To my delight, there was a lot of salmon. Salmon sushi and sashimi are my favorite! As seen in my pictures, the sushi boat was beautiful. Even the wasabi and celery decor were shaped into flowers - the entire arrangement was fabulous. Came here with a few friends (5 of us in total), and we ordered the following things: snow dragon roll, and mermaid roll. These things are not seen as often in other restaurants, so they caught our eye. Along with that we ordered a medium boat to share. The snow dragon roll and the mermaid roll were quite good, and having the lobster inside was interesting. The ingredients for the boat were quite fresh, and it had a good selection of fish, so everyone was able to find things they liked. When we came in initially, we were not given water and menu immediately, which was a bit of a downside to the service. Other than that, the service was ok. In terms of price, it's not ridiculous, but not on the cheap side. The place isn't too big, so if you have a larger party coming in, it's better to book ahead of time. Really random spot for sushi I didn't expect it to be so busy. The sushi was meh it really threw me off that they put wasabi on all on the sushi (under the fish). I would've asked for it without as I really don't like wasabi. That kind of ruined the entire experience for me. We got the medium boat (~$60-70) which is good for two people if you eat a lot like I do. We finished it and left very full. Two of the maki rolls were 5/5, the rest were pretty standard. Three of us came here to celebrate a friend's birthday on a Sunday afternoon. I've had takeout from here before, so I somewhat knew to expect some good quality sushi. We walked in and were greeted right away. Three of the four booths were taken, so we were luckily seated in the last one. We knew what we wanted right away based on looking at the menu before coming and looking at Yelp pictures. This place felt very over priced for what I got. Friend and I ordered the hand roll set which came with a bunch of sashimi, sushin California roll pieces, and a hand rolls. It was still a good amount but there are places that definitely give you more for cheaper. To which I would usually think, if the portion is less, the quality should be better. But it wasnt. The fish didnt seem particularly fresh. My white tuna looked old - it should be glossy throughout but the edges looked like they were drying out. We ordered Medium Sushi Boat - Sushi & Sashimi, two orders of Seafood Udon, 4 orders of Spicy Salmon Hand Roll. The owner gave us 4 miso soup and salad to start, and said this is on the house. Miso was hot and not too salty. Salad was fresh and the dressing goes really well with the vegetables. Then came the Spicy Salmon Hand Roll. I'm a little sceptical at first because many AYCE sushi joint offer this so what makes this was stand out? Well the salmon is fresh and it melts in your mouth. The seaweed is super crunchy and you know it is fresh, whereas the AYCE the seaweed is soggy at most places. Finally came the Sushi Boat. It looks stunning. Looks like an art. The owner gave us thick pieces of sashimi, therefore you can appreciate how fresh it is. Literally it melts in your mouth. Then to our surprise the owner offered us Shrimp Maki Roll for free and it was super delicious. Shrimp was cooked right, it was over cooked. The owners then offered us 4 ice cream. Refreshing. Gonoe is a really nice sushi place with standard menus and prices. The owners are Korean. We ordered the sushi boat small, agedashi tofu, gyoza, and tempura udon. The boat had very standard sushi and sashimi, it would be great if there would be more variety to differentiate from other places. Their agedashi tofu was amazing though, it was a big proportion and the texture was very soft. The tempura was great but the soup base lacked a bit taste and the noodles were a bit hard. There was no complimentary soup or salad, but they did give out grilled salmon steak which is nice. In the beginning they also give you a small bowl of soup noodles (enough for a bite) as a starter. Wow. I'm really surprised at how disappointed I was with Gonoe. I've been keeping tabs of Gonoe for years. I live about five/ten minutes away, and I've never come. I've been meaning to go for a while, seeing as Gonoe has a four star Yelp rating, and it's been around for a while even with larger Japanese restaurants super close by, so I figured there must be a reason it survived. Now having gone to Gonoe, I have absolutely no idea how they are still in business. We came as a party of four. It took the servers between five and ten minutes to come to ask us our beverage orders (tea), and another five to ten minutes before they brought our tea. This to me seems to indicate a lack of servers. We ordered a sashimi dinner, a hamachi kama, a tempura dinner, and a legendary dragon roll. They gave us each a complimentary taster of soup noodles at the start of our meal. At about $12, the hamachi kama was probably the best dish we had all night. It was a good portion for that price, but my mom thought it could have been served hotter (temperature-wise). The sashimi for the sashimi dinner was cut unevenly (some pieces being fairly thin on one end and thicker on the other end, and other pieces just being super thin) and the variety was cheap (salmon, red tuna, red snapper/tilapia, octopus, white tuna). The legend dragon roll ($13.95) was marketed as a soft shell crab roll wrapped in salmon and unagi. I have never seen such a meager wrapping of seafood on any sushi roll before. They were so thin that they were translucent. I couldn't even taste the eel. The shocker of the night was the tempura dinner. I'm not sure whether this is a variant on tempura shrimp that I am not aware of, but the tempura I am accustomed to is battered, then fried. This was breaded in panko, then fried. It was tempura colored, but the texture was all wrong. The breading actually cracked in the middle of the shrimp and separated off of the shrimp. It was also thick and had an awkward mouth feel. I am actually completely befuddled by this, especially because their veggie tempura was battered the way I am accustomed to having tempura. I asked if this Gonoe is affiliated with the Gonoe in Thornhill. I was told they used to be affiliated, but no longer. This Gonoe is now affiliated with Hamaru at York Mills and Leslie. Hamaru doesn't do tempura this way. I really and truly do not understand. They should have stayed affiliated with the Gonoe in Thornhill. The Gonoe in Thornhill does tempura right.
