Absolutely loved the abundance of menu options and choices when it comes to customization. As for the service, it was okay, servers came along every now and then to see if we wanted more water. As for the overall space, and the reason why it's missing a star is because it seemed pretty bland, but it's to be expected given that it's supposed to be a quick in-and-out type meal.

Just checked out this Katsu place in Scarborough. Excellent Katsu. Wide variety of sauces including original, curry, spicy and carbonara. I had the pork loin curry and hubby had pork loin original. Both came with wonderfully crispy pork cutlets, rice, shredded cabbage, pickle and ginger. Also came with a lovely smoky miso soup. It's a casual dining option (I don't think they are licensed), service was fine. The food came quite quickly and was excellent. The sauce was also wonderful It's in a small strip mall on the SE corner of Brimley and Sheppard East. Parking on site.

Pretty good Japanese-style deep-fried pork cutlet, curry fish, sweet chili pork loin, cheese topokki, you name it. This time we ordered the following: Carbonara Pork Loin Katsu Japanese Pork Loin Katsu Gold & Silver Brick Cheese Katsu Freshly made to order with nice heat. Crunchy and yet not oily at all. To me, hot and not oily is important for a pleasant deep-fried food experience. Pretty happy about this place as it is worth the money. Good service as well. Check in with the Yelp app and get a free pop too. Pay by cash to get a 10% off. Why not?

After finding out that the Markham location had closed down, we found out Scarborough had one too. Since we were down that way, we decided to go this Valentine's night. There was no wait. Some Uber orders on a table in the middle. Quiet crowd. We got our regular orders. Udon, carbonara fish katsu and a curry fish katsu. All were delicious though we thought there was a slight downsizing of portions compared to our experiences in Markham. Still delicious nonetheless. One thing I would possibly suggest is giving a real, stainless steel spoon rather than a wooden disposable. I know, the chopsticks are disposable wooden ones so why care? It just tastes and feels different eating out of a wooden disposable spoon. We will come back when in the area!

First time trying a katsuya after seeing other locations and seeing good reviews. It's a Japanese katsuya place with interesting fusion-like options. The service was typical of an Asian restaurant, not too much but there when needed! The carbonara katsuya was the most interesting and unique in taste. The chicken karaage was ok, I've had better elsewhere. The ambiance of this particular restaurant was cozy with wooden tables and stools.

Let's paint the scene, personified. Secret late night rendezvous at Katsuya. I am there for one thing, my guilty pleasure named Takoyaki. Much to my chagrin he was unavailable when I called for him. He ran out, possibly with another? He gets around town. So I called on my trusty Miso, since Miso and I go way back. He's been a reliable second draft pick. They told me he went sour. They mumbled something about having issues with Miso. I know, he's a bit of a salty fellow. Miso ran away and they can't find a trace of him. He's nowhere to be found. I moved on fast and asked about Rice, his full name is White Rice. Rice usually comes through when you call him. Rice came and brought his juicy, thick friend Katsu, a traditional fellow, who offered me some crunch and threw in some veg on the side. Katsu was decent, but his friend Rice foiled the affair. On the outside, Rice looked good, but on the inside, Rice became too soft for the job, he became wet behind the ears, others called him mushy. I didn't want to be sentimental and told him quite frankly, I don't like mushy. I told Rice to leave and get his act together. If you're gonna do the job, do it right. I wasn't gonna let that get to me. In the words of Mary J. Blige, I'm not gonna cry, I'm not gonna cry, I'm not gonna shed no tears. Now that it's off my chest. I wrote a poem about the whole affair and I'm moving on. [ lights a fictitious cigar, dims the lights, ends scene ]

Been going here for years and always forget to write a review, whoops! Price Range: Roughly $18-$25 Items Ordered: -Curry Chicken Katsu -Original Pork Katsu -Honeycomb Pork Katsu Food Quality (Menu/Taste/ Portion Size) - 4.5/5 The menu is an ideal size, has a good amount of options for katsu types but not too much where it's overwhelming. I've always loved the original , it's the perfect blend of flavour and thickness. The crispiness of the pork and chicken is always really good. My friend tried the honeycomb katsu for the first time and enjoyed the unique taste. Though prices have gone up over the years because of covid, I think it's still solid value price wise. I'm always more than full after a meal here! Atmosphere - 4/5 A very nice classic Japanese resto design. Not a huge place so netter in small groups and a good place to catchup with friends. Not overly crowded if you go just after the dinner rush which is what we did. Service - 4/5 Service was pretty solid, always have a good experience. We were the last ones there and they didn't rush us out which was really nice. Would I go here again? You know it! Lash's Recommendation - Original Pork Katsu - Pork Carbonara Katsu (warning: this is super rich and filling, I'd recommend sharing)

Outrageous. It would be ZERO if it were allowed. I ordered a set of Gold & Silver Katsu, and my katsu looked sad and pathetic, like someone stole my cheese. I was unsure at first, so I went and had a look at the reviews on Yelp. No one has had anything like that; those katsu were filled with cheese, nothing hollow inside. BTW, it's not authentic Japanese pork katsu. The Japanese one has a better sauce, more tangy, less barbecue sauce-like. Taste-wise speaking, the sauce has quite a strong flavor, overpowering the cheese in the katsu, especially the 'silver' one (mozzarella). Horrible experience, and I know I'm not alone.

I've had Katsuya many times but this was my first time dining in. There was only one waitress working at the time so it was hard to get their attention when we needed something. Love the katsu from here. I usually get the Katsuya original cheese katsu. The food was great and it also came with miso soup. The prices have gone up quite a bit but that seems like the norm now for most restaurants.

It's been awhile since I last dined in at Katsuya and my first time at this location. Covid protocols were in place where staff ensure you got your double dose and verifying with a piece of photo ID, temperatures were taken upon arrival and you need to complete a form online confirming you're covid free. Tables were also spaced apart for social distancing purposes. I ordered the carbonara fish katsu and it's exactly how I remember it to be! Fresh crispy katsu with a delicious carbonara sauce with pieces of shrimp in there! The portion was large for me and ended up having to take home half of the meal! If you're looking to dine in as the temperature is dropping now, definitely consider this location. If you plan to dine in, do plan your dinner a little earlier to avoid crowds and the wait for a table.

Very good very delicious Katsuya. I will admit it's a bit pricier but they make it worth it. Since I don't usually come out to North York, I went all out on mine, getting the red carbonara katsu with cheese (pork loin w/ mozzarella). Total it added up to 24.25 but the mix of cheese and red carbonara together fit really well together and its probably the best katsu I've ever had. Really loved it and could see myself coming back!

Katsuya Ratings: 4.3/5 Food: 4.75/5 - I heard Katsuya has the best katsu in Toronto from many people and locals, and it definitely didn't let me down. I came here for dinner with my boyfriend and some of his friends. The katsu was so crispy, great quality and huge portions, and we thought it was really worth it. Please read the description of the item I got that night. - Katsuya Original [GET]: I was a bit skeptical and worried about ordering the chicken katsu, since pork is usually the go to for katsu and more juicer and fattier, but Katsuya did it. The chicken breast katsu was so moist and tender, juicier than the pork katsu my boyfriend got. The crust was fried perfectly and crunchy. Katsuya's house sauce was interestingly delicious too. It is made with seasonal fruits, vegetables, and organic herbs; it was definitely on a sweeter side than regular curry. The rice was okay, taste a bit hard and wished it was fluffier. We got the udon soup, because they ran out of miso soup due to supply chain shortage. It was flavorful but too savory / salty for me. - Japanese Katsu [GET]: My boyfriend got the traditional Japanese style katsu with pork loin. The pork loin was not as juicy and fatty as we wanted it to be. It tasted pretty lean, maybe it's the cut of the pork, but it was still very delicious and yummy. It comes with Worcestershire sauce mixed with various vegetables and fruits and sesame seeds. I think the sauce was way too sweet for my liking, so I'd say stick to the original katsu dishes or the curry dishes. The side ingredients are fresh and tangy, just like mine. The rice was also similar, nothing special. Ambiance: 4/5 - Indoor seating is available, but they blocked out half the restaurant off, so it's limited. There's an open kitchen where you can see them prep the food. Interior design is simple, bright, and clean. Make sure to come early to avoid a crowd or make a reservation, since this place gets pretty busy. You go up to the cash register to pay at the end of the meal. Price: 4/5 - My chicken katsu was $18.90, and my boyfriend's pork loin katsu was $17.50 before tax. The portion was quite filling. It comes with an udon soup, white rice with 1 free refill, and some fermented veggies. I was quite full afterwards and didn't need to get that rice refills; don't think any of us did actually. Remember to pay in cash, because you get a 10% discount. Service: 4.5/5 - The staff there was so kind, patience, and awesome. We had a party of 6, but she was able to work efficiently and taken good care of us. She was fast at taking our orders and helped me decide whether to get chicken and pork loin, and I am do glad I listened to her advice. The food came out pretty fast, so I am not complaining. Make sure to check-in on Yelp to get a free soda. BLUF: I absolutely loved katsu, and since Hawaii I wasn't able to find a good spot, but Katsuya was definitely helped satisfied my cravings. The staffs there are so nice and welcoming, and the food is wonderful. This is my go-to spot for whenever I am craving for Japanese Katsu, especially the chicken katsu. They know how to cook their chicken here, so I'd say go for the chicken katsu. I want to return to try their other curry dishes.

It's my go-to spot to get my don fix - I love the wide variety of dons (rice bowls) that they offer with various fish and seafood combinations. There are also unique appetizers in the menu, such as Purple Yam Croquettes, Crab Crackers, Braised Bamboo Shoots with Shirasu (immature whitebait fish), and Takowasa (marinated raw octopus pieces, to be eaten with or wrapped in nori / seaweed). Although the dons are the main highlight of their menu (hence the restaurant name), they also offer traditional sushi, sashimi, sushi rolls and sets (similar to other Japanese sushi restaurants). Miso Aburi Scallops were very flavourful - nicely torched, giving the scallops a nice grill / char taste. They came with red and green seaweed, and a bit of fish roe. Large Premium Hana Don contained a good amount of fish and seafood, including a whole abalone, uni, shrimp in the shell, aburi salmon, ikura (salmon roe), salmon sashimi, tuna sashimi, yellowtail sashimi, other various fish sashimi, tamago (egg), and a few slices of cucumber on a generous bed of rice. I liked that the rice was a mix of white rice and some type of dark-coloured grains. Unatama Don came with a big piece of unagi and tamago (egg) that were both excellent. The sashimi were all fresh. Okonomiyaki was disappointing but it was sort of expected... for only $9, it was about 99% just flour pan-fried in a patty, without any substantial fillings (unlike real okonomiyaki, which usually contains protein / seafood, cabbage, eggs, and other ingredients). Location is super convenient near Bay & Dundas, ambiance is very casual, and service is quick.

The menu is set up to where you pick the entree and then what type of protein you want out of pork loin, chicken, fish, cheese, and sweet potato cheese. I settled on the sweet chili katsu. A piece of chicken arrived on a plate accompanied with rice and shredded cabbage. The chicken was breaded in a light panko like crumb and was half covered in the sweet chili sauce. I ate a couple of pieces and the crisp texture and flavor was wonderful. I had a bite of rice and when I got to the cabbage to my dismay I found a long piece of hair in it. I immediately lost my appetite and all I could think about was how great the two bites of chicken was. I gave up the plate and showed the staff what I found. They offered another plate a couple of times and after I declined a refund was issued. Katsuya. sucks for serving me one of the best pieces of breaded chicken in my life with hair in the food. I'm struggling to hold back the tears now as I write. I did get to try the parmesan fries which were ok. I also tasted the udon which is not one of their stronger dishes. This probably would have been five stars had it not been for the hair. I know this happens on the rare occasion but probably shouldn't if hair nets are worn. If you do try out this place, expect great katsuya.
