A Japanese fine dine with a lot of vegetarian options and offbeat menu. It is quite intimate place or a good place for office lunches. A huge place with many dining halls and areas. I generally visit the place during office lunch hours, make sure you reserve an hour to enjoy the meal and service. The cucumber avocado maki is my favourite along with warm soba noodles, but in general I have enjoyed every meal. They could do better with roasted cauliflower. read more

Came in on a Monday evening for dinner. Dress code: semi formal. Lots of people in suits/jackets, occasional polos. Food 3/5: we got the chicken karaage and the gyoza for apps, 6-7 different nigiri, their cod and their short rib. Generally pretty tasty I wasn't a huge fan of the cod and my dad wasn't a fan of the short rib but that came down to preference and worked out. Only issue was there were fish bones in one of our nigiri which was pretty off putting Service 5/5: generally good service, polite, friendly, offered good advice when asked, fairly quick. Ambiance 5/5: very beautiful location and ambiance, very classy and upscale feel with a separate sushi bar area. Value 2/5: for the price point, the service and ambiance was as expected, food was fairly average with the bone in the nigiri knocking off an extra point. Last day of the restaurant prior to 1 month (?) closing due to renovations. We felt great on the food, service and ambiance. It was like a secluded area on that corner of a building colored black wall panels. We were seated right away by the host and our server was Michelle and she was very attentive, checking regularly. We ordered soup , miso and seafood chowder. We had skewers like chicken and salmon and it was a big chunk of serving. It's full of colleagues from nearby offices mingling and groups having informal meetings. Ice been both for a quick pre-dinner drink and for a large group dinner. I recommend table service instead of the bar for the most attentive service and to maximize the enjoyment of your food, even if eating lightly. There are plenty of light options and almost everything on the menu is best shared with a group. Try the fixed menu option if you're in a large group, although there was some confusion with our waiter on whether this option even existed (we selected it when reserving a table). In the end, the waiter and chef chose a bunch of items for us and ensured a members of the group with dietary restrictions had enough to eat. It's just OK. This restaurant is an example of a pricier-than-justified restaurant in the financial core. I recently had a business lunch here and I was surprised at the prices for some of items here for what you get. Specifically, I got this sushi box set and it was $35 per person. It came with a full on vegetarian roll with peppers and avocado. I didn't look at the menu too carefully because I was on said business lunch, but it's definitely overpriced for what you get. The sashimi pricing seemed fine though- it was $28 for the O-Toro and $11 for the scallop. I wouldn't come here on my own dollar. read more

B's friend S told us about Ki. There is a restaurant in Vancouver that is also called Ki and according to S, that once upon a time these two restaurants were related and the Ki in Toronto would mention about the Ki in Vancouver. However, the two have very different concepts. Ki in Toronto is a much more fancy restaurant than the Vancouver location. Prices are on the different spectrum. B said this place is a must try. We ordered several dishes to share: - Torched Salmon Roll - Kush pork - Chicken Karaage - Hamachi Jalapeno B got the Sakura Blossom drink. This place doesn't serve super authentic Japanese dishes. It is a fusion restaurant. Every dish here was very delicious. Small portion and pretty pricy (if you ask me) but they do serve quality. Out of all the dishes, I would say the most filling was the Chicken Karaage. Every dish was very flavorful and didn't disappoint. The decor of the restaurant is very nice. Ki is a staple of the downtown core and a favourite for business meetings. We've tried to get last minute reservations here but it was always tricky finding something that isn't a late lunch. They were really good about finding out whether they could accommodate us. We called ahead and left a callback number as they were trying to figure out their lunch schedule. It was finally my turn to hit up Ki with a group of 6. They have complimentary coat check for you as many of the tables aren't conducive to storing jackets. You'll be given a numbered chip to keep track of your jacket. The food menu is Asian fusion with the highlight being Japanese cuisine including sushi and bentos. Definitely would not recommend if you're vegetarian. The food wound up being pretty average but presented very well. We shared a few rolls which were good with nice ingredients and paired with smart sauces. They were also actually bite sized so you didn't have to take multiple bites. I had one of the rice sets which was a crab rice that was topped with raw tuna. It was served with cold soba noodles and pickled vegetables. Honestly, nothing outstanding. I've had better soba noodles at all you can eat places. It's definitely an impressive setting for a meeting or a date but not the pinnacle of Asian dining. read more

Very, very mediocre - in fact, at the price point they offer, it's significantly worse than mediocre. We came here for a corporate lunch, selecting the most expensive option for the fixed menu at approximately $100 per person. In my opinion, it would've been best spent elsewhere. The appetizers started off well enough (except for the excruciatingly long wait - more on that later). The shrimp tempura and fried eggplant were both huge hits - the dipping sauce for the tempura was particularly popular! The cold plates were also up to par. We enjoyed the light, refreshing flavours of the hamachi as well as the delicious textures of the maguro on crispy rice cakes. Then, the food quality went downhill. The nigiri was pretty horrendous - I feel like I've gotten fresher fish from takeout sushi. Everyone looked forward to the lobster roll, only to find that we could not taste the lobster at all as the pickled radish overwhelmed everything, a terrible combination! The California roll was just bland. The torched salmon was not bad, but mostly singular in its flavours. The hot plates came next, and these were unfortunately also rather uninspired in taste despite high quality ingredients being used. The "pièce de résistance" was definitely the "chef's assorted desserts" listed on the menu - a plate of brownies. Not really sure what was assorted about it...nor why such a boring thing would be served at a Japanese restaurant. Need I say more? Service was a disaster, probably the worst I've had for restaurants in the downtown area. Typically, regardless of the food, the service has always been exceptional around this location considering the kind of clientele and the exorbitant gratuities demanded, especially when it's a semi-private event! I guess Ki is not looking for repeat customers in this regard since we seem to have been neglected throughout our time there. Food arrived so, so slowly our clients started checking their watches to make sure they wouldn't miss their meetings at 3:30pm (we started at 12:30pm). We were split into two tables, and one of the tables got their desserts early while the other table did not for some reason. Imagine our surprise when the other table stood up to leave and we hadn't even finished our meal! We had to get the dessert to go, and that took about 15 minutes. Food wise the quality of this place is really good. The flavour profiles are interesting and even things they call spicy aren't ridiculously spicy. The prices are expensive. It reflects the area I think. It's in the financial district where big financial companies & their employees would go after work. The rent in the Brookfield Place must be astronomical. They have to make up for that somehow. Anyway, the decor of the restaurant is timeless. Reds, with wood accents, fabric accents. Washrooms are at the very back of the restaurant, tucked away near the private dining room. The service is top notch. I was here for a company dinner & they knew of my food allergies. The servers were very attentive to me about my allergies. You'll see a variety of people here. Some are very dressed up, some in office wear, and then you also have the people who come here before or after an event at the Scotiabank arena. I saw a guy wearing a t-shirt and blue jeans & a lady in the sharpest, nicest suit. They have a patio outside that would be nice in the warmer months. I have never been out on the patio. I'm not in this area much so I likely wouldn't eat regularly here. But at least I know of a decent restaurant in this area where I like the food. It's definitely a pricier place but my bf and I enjoyed our visit. We dropped by for a late night drink and I got one of their seasonal drinks: Shiso Lemonade and he got Sapporo (on tap). The Shiso Lemonade was definitely pricey but also definitely worth it. It comes in a short glass but with a beautiful purple ice that really caught our attention. Since it was late, it wasn't busy so we were able to sit at the bar and have a conversation without shouting. The atmosphere had a nice ambience to it. I used to love coming here for special dinners and date nights when I was younger. Now that I've got a kid in tow most days, I figured this would be off limits for a while. However, since my kid likes sushi and Japanese food, we gave it a go. We had a pretty nice mom-and-daughter dinner here and our server was very pleasant and kind. She recommended some nice mocktails for the wee one and a couple great drinks for me. The food was great, as usual. However -- and this left a sour taste -- the older lady working the front door (didn't get her name) treated us very poorly when we first came in for our reservation. I completely understand that this isn't a kiddy place, and if my daughter was running amok and being a brat, I could see the staff being annoyed. But she is super well behaved and hadn't even done so much as take off her coat before this woman was looking down her nose at us. Then she kind of wandered off and found some papers to fill out when I asked to be seated. We were in a great mood and I was excited to take my daughter here, so it didn't feel great to be treated like a lesser customer immediately upon arrival. I came to Canada to celebrate my ## birthday (the first time) and stumbled upon the restaurant when I was getting the lay of the land. I went in to have lunch. I was greeted with a smile and shown immediately to my table. The atmosphere was nice, clean, and very calming. In addition, the prices were in line with the food quality; everything tasted so fresh and cooked just right. I decided to eat light because I knew I was going out later to celebrate my birthday (solo). I decided on the Sake-Braised Pork Belly + Green Onion along with the Assorted Seasonal Vegetable Tempura and a glass of champagne to wash it down (so to speak). My hostess, which I'm kicking myself that I did not remember her name, was absolutely wonderful, charming, and genuine. Please notice the last word I said in the statement, "genuine." I felt celebrated and valued as a customer and human; thank you. The food was out of this world. So much so that I had to box it up and take the rest with me back to the hotel. I told her that if things didn't work out at the other restaurant, I would be back for dinner to finish celebrating my birthday. The next day I knew I was leaving on Saturday to fly back to the states, so I decided to have lunch there again. I had the Grilled Shishito Peppers, Sake-Braised Pork Belly, + Green Onion and took to go the California roll to go along with some more champagne (okay, don't judge me; I was on vacation and still celebrating). Nevertheless, I made it a point to remember my hostess's name this time; Lindsey. After meeting her, I wondered, "where do Ki get these hostesses from" because she, too, was just as genuine and friendly as the one from the previous day. She looked me in the eyes when speaking and addressed me in a congenial way. Unfortunately, we live these days when hospitality and restaurants have taken a big hit regarding quality staff. For those in this industry, my hats go off to you. I'm sure it's been challenging. I came here with a friend on a Saturday night around 6pm. Since my friend was gluten-free she was given a separate menu, which quite honestly was pretty extensive. Although our food was very tasty, I can honestly say that only 2/4 items were absolutely fantastic, while the other two were just ok. We got the following: *Spicy Tuna Makimono *Torched Spicy Salmon Roll *Spicy Maguro + Sake on mini crispy rice cakes ( GF ) Garlic-Fried Rice Grilled Beef Striploin Tataki ( GF through special request ) My favourites were the Spicy Tuna Makimono, the Torched Spicy Salmon Roll & the Spicy Maguro + Sake on mini crispy rice cakes. I was a little disappointed by the Garlic-Fried Rice because it was literally just white rice tossed with toasted garlic cloves. I was really hoping there might've been some veggies in it. The service was AMAZING. Hot Towel at the beginning of our meal, complimentary coat check, great ambiance, customizations to the menu as per our gluten-free requests, & complimentary truffles at the end of our meal. Just finished having a late night bite at Ki Modern Japanese and Bar. We ordered the Malbec and Sapporo as our drinks and ordered some apps to share at the bar. The service was fine - friendly but nothing particularly special or out of the ordinary to write about. We shared the Chicken Karage (6/10) fried chicken that was very heavily breaded and small portions with a weak and lacklustre aioli served alongside it. We also had the fried calamari (8/10) it was a nice appetizer to share - great aoili alongside. For the mains we shared the shrimp appetizer (3/10)- this one really lacked flavour and taste - it was four pieces of tiger shrimp supposed to be dipped in mango habanero - it was not flavourful at all or good. We also had the chicken drumsticks - it was alright not a lot of flavour and again just tasted like someone popped it on a bbq with some light bbq sauce (3/10). Lastly we had the striploin skewer (1/10) the most flavourless and poorly cooked item. No flavour and bland. I've been here once before years ago and not loved the place - but thought I would give it one more chance - it is really not worth the visit and not worth spending your money here! We had a great meal at Ki. Our server was fantastic. She took the time to explain things and offer suggestions. It's expensive but that was expected. The food is fresh and beautiful. I especially liked the sushi bar that has hi back chairs so you can sit at a bar but yet have privacy with your date. Plates are for sharing so it's fun. They have a lunch menu which is basically an all inclusive lunch or else you can order from the alacarte menu. We booked a private room for a friends party and it was a pleasant experience, the event coordinator was on top of her emails and replied very quickly. The waitresses were very nice and accommodating. What turned sour for me is how this business has handle a situation we had at the end. The bill was supposed to be split amongst 11/12 girls. 6 paid cash and 5 paid debit/credit. The waitress came up to me after stating that she was missing a payment from the debit/credit portion and before I could find out who didn't pay, my friend tried to pay it since she felt awkward, but I fought her for it since I was the host. The next 2 days, we were trying to figure out who didn't pay and thought it was this friend who nobody else in the group had witness her paying and she was the last person to use the debit and credit machine. When we spoke to her she had proof the she did pay. Which means our entire table had fully paid our bill and that it was most likely the waitress had probably dropped a receipt or didn't print out a copy of it. So I end up over paying $150 on our bill. I wrote 2 emails to Noelle who was the person I was in contact with this entire time to plan out this event for my friends birthday. I thanked her for helping me and also explained very nicely what had happened and was hoping she could help me look into the transaction history of payment of that night. The second email was pictures of our receipts. I got no reply. I did not accused them of over charging but if they could kindly look into it since everyone at the table had fully paid, then it's most likely they have overcharged me. If you did it by accident it's ok, just refund my money. But instead you chose to ignore me, that's pretty much robbery. I didn't choose to give you more money, I did it because I thought it wasn't fully paid. If we are missing then at least I know it was our fault. This business has no customer service resolution, if you have a problem, don't bother relying on them, they have bad business practice and don't care if they cheat you. I will never recommend this restaurant to anyone. PS. The portions are so small for what you're getting off of a prefix men. First time I saw yam roll with yam on top...to leave space for asparagus. Creative but didn't taste any better than regular yam rolls, in fact the first ingredient in your mouth would have been greasy yam tempura, followed with plain avocado and asparagus. I don't appreciate this combination. Same issue with the spicy salmon roll, plus the rice was hard. One star to the service, we were served with hot hand towel which was thoughtful. After coming here twice I think this place deserves a review! I came the first time while on a business trip, but the second time I was also in town on business, but flew my fiancée in for the weekend to show her around! This was one of the first places on our list so I'll tell you how it went! Atmosphere/Appearance: I LOVE THIS PLACE. The huge orange-ish, pinkish sign with 2 small little letters are only the beginning of what makes this place so elegant. There's also a beautiful fire-looking piece of art that accompanies the sign to the left of the giant glass doors. By the way the restaurant is inside some sort of mall so there's no private parking lot or anything. Good luck with finding spaces on the street or just walking here from wherever! The inside is GORGEOUS! I'm in love with the high ceilings, dim lighting, snazzy music and wide open spaces. The place is just enormous and looks like it stretches for miles in all directions with so many different sections. All I wanted to know was why wasn't it busier? The pictures I took, were on a FRIDAY NIGHT at like 8:00pm. Where is everybody?! How does this place stay open? Lol. My visits were 28 months apart, so obviously they get business and it looks like they have some peak times, maybe I'm the weird one coming to this place when it's NOT jumpin'. Lol. No matter. Service: Jasmin took excellent care of us. She was witty, funny and very knowledgeable when it came to the different varieties of saké. I appreciated that dearly. Food: The food here is REALLY good. It's like an Asian-fusion style of restaurant where the basis of most of the entrees is Asian-inspired, but then there may be a barbecue twist, southern twist, you name it. I really liked it. So where do I begin? My least favorite thing... the Yuzi-Ichimi Mutsu. It's dusted butterfish, cinnamon, pickled yellow zucchini and a few other things that I can't remember, but I didn't like it. I ate it 'cause I paid for it, but yeah. It was a delicacy that has to be desired, but yeah. The quality was there for sure, but I just didn't like it. Next up was the Kara-Age. It's ginger-fried chicken with yuzu cream. It was very different, but I liked it! It had a hint of sweetness while being crispy and savory. Next up was the Chili Big-Eye Tuna. It was served with bitter melon and a house-made salsa. It was straight... but this place started to feel like those craft-cocktail bars that try too hard to make unique drinks then wind up making them nasty... but moving on, let's see what else this place has got. In the midst of all this I ordered a 12 oz. Gekkeikan warm saké (the cheapest one they offered) and it was delicious. I either don't have the palate to recognize good saké or I like the cheap stuff. Lol. I tried a few things from their Izakaya menu which is like a "happy hour" of sorts. The Beef Sukiyaki Tacos were delicious. They were a bit salty, but savory and very good. Next up were the Baby Pork Ribs which were awesome and the meat was falling right off the bone. The Torched Salmon Roll was so good that I wanted to order another one as soon as I took the first bite. I had to use some self-restraint though... I was quite hungry so I turned to the Ki Signature Plates and got the Karashi Miso Free-Range Chicken which comes with sautéed kale-togarashi slaw and orange-ume sauce. It was smaller than expected (like everything), but it was delightful! Fresh, upbeat, unique with a nice charred skin. Very good. The Salmon Papaya Tartar was GREAT! Super fresh with a powerful flavor that was accented by the fruit it was served with. I wanted to check their "wings" out so I ordered the Seven-Spice Chicken Drummettes glazed with Ki barbeque sauce. They were SO SMALL they were laughable. Lol. They were good, but C'MON fam. Anyway... the food here is mostly great. Like I mentioned before, the food is very different, but a good kind of different. Value: All prices in $CAD. Torched Salmon Roll = $15.00 Seven-Spice Chicken Drummettes = $13.00 Baby Pork Ribs = $10.00 Beef Sukiyaki Tacos = $10.00 Salmon Papaya Tartar = $10.00 Karashi Miso Free-Range Chicken = $23.00 12 oz. Geikkekan Saké = $14.00 Ginger Fried Karaage Chicken = $10.00 The first couple of things I mentioned are no longer on the menu so the pricing doesn't exist. But yeah... this place is a bit pricey especially regarding the portion sizes. If you come hungry, come with your big wallet, but this place is a really awesome hangout. If you come between 4:00pm and 6:00pm Monday through Friday you can get 8 specialty items for $10.00 a piece, 4 of them I have listed. In conclusion, I really loved it here! I did and always will. I don't think I'll come here for dinner anymore because of how much I really have to spend to be satisfied, but yeah... that would be the only thing keeping me away, but please... check this place out and see for yourself! read more

Had lunch here today. One of us had Chicken Katsu Set which was fried chicken cut in slices that had been prepared wrong so the batter didn't hold to the chicken. White rice was good but just white rice, Chinese cabbage salad plus lettuce salad. Just a strange combo. Asked for more hosin sauce that came after we'd finished plus asked for 2 more iced teas, got one so we shared. I had Quinoa Bowl which was good but asked for Chix kabob instead of tofu. Got the Tofu anyway. Also on the tray was a sm salad and some type of noodle that was OK but still don't know what it was. Server was Stacy who was pleasant when we sat down but things got busy and I think she was slammed. Won't return. We have guest coming next week and wanted to check it out so we could take them. This place is ok but I agree with some other posts, this isn't an amazing place to eat. To be honest I am not a big Japanese food fan. But I did enjoy surprisingly the sweet potato tempura, the dipping sauce was very nice and it was crispy, so a total surprise for me. I thought the food was maybe going to surprise me after that but it turned it that wasn't the case. The edamame peas were tasteless. Supposed to be 5 spices on then etc, instead bland. We had some beef short rib, thin cuts, cooked alright, cooked with simple sweet soy sauce on them... Really nothing that I would want to eat again. The desserts came and we had matcha cheesecake, chocolate cake and some other cake with banana on top... None were very good, bland... Really not impressive. So to repeat I'm not a huge janaese fan but I wouldn't be goun g back to this restaurant... So many good options in this city.. read more

Excellent choice for pre-theatre/game meal. Sushi and sashimi were so fresh. Had the ora king salmon and oturo --both excellent. Also had striploin kushiyaki --Loved the presentation and the taste! Ki may be more expensive than the average sushi resto but it is far from average! read more

Last time several colleagues and I went there for lunch as it is so close to where we work. We made a reservation so was able to be seated really fast. However the service was so slow that we waited at least 30 minutes to get food. The lunch ended up one hour and half long. It is really not convenient for work lunch unless you are with clients. They have lunch menu which is all inclusive lunch but you can also order from regular menu. The food are mediocre. My colleagues think the tuna steak is in between of raw and cooked (either would likely be better) as they ask you to choose how cooked you want it. The price is not cheap but consider the location it is justifiable. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this place for lunch. However this place has nice patio with bar out in the summer so maybe try that out instead. read more
