Service was friendly as soon as we walked in. The place was crowded, almost full when arrived. The dining area is small but didn't feel crowded. Bathrooms are in a hallway through main door, and you must use a key. They are, however, clean and bright. Miso (7/10): Came with our meal. It was plenty salty, but there was no tofu or seaweed in my bowl. Also didn't get a spoon. Not a big deal, but odd to me Green salad (7/10): The salad was tasty jverall, but it was quite small. Fresh iceberg lettuce and ginger dressing was great. I just wish there was more. Green tea (9/10): I legitimately don't know what's different about this tea, but it's some of the best I've ever had. Free refills are the best. Vege dragon roll (7.5/10): Disclaimer, this is mostly because I don't love cucumber, but I shared the roll and didn't want to alter it. It's crazy how much you can taste the lettuce. I really enjoyed the sweet tofu. And can we talk about the sesame? So good. Avocado Sushi is a good spot for casual sushi close to Midtown Toronto, near Bay and Charles Street. It's obviously not a top tier place, but for the money, it's a solid spot. I've been there three times now, and each time has been pretty good. We've gotten the takeout party tray, which is a great deal at only about $45 for 38 pieces. The restaurant is very modern and clean, which makes it feel very welcoming. One issue is that for takeout orders, they take a lot longer than quoted. Often, the sushi is more than 30 minutes late to be ready for take out. I was told that it would be ready in 20-25 minutes, and it took nearly 50 minutes. This isn't a dealbreaker, but just keep this in mind. Try to order early is possible. In terms of food, everything was as expected. The fish was fresh, the rice was good, and there were no major complaints overall. Again, this isn't a Miku or a Jabistro, but it's great mid-level quality sushi. The food here isn't bad by all means, but I found it to be extremely overpriced. I ordered a small sushi platter for pickup thinking that it was $38+ tax. They don't have a website or updated menu online so I guess I was looking at an older version of the menu. When I got there, I was surprised that my total came to about $50 for 5 or 6 pretty basic rolls like California, cucumber avocado, yam rolls, spicy salmon etc. I guess they increased the prices by a couple dollars recently. The place is pretty small and clean but their prices aren't really justified imo. There are so many other sushi places in dt core that are more fairly priced and of similar quality. read more

I live in Yorkville and see this little restaurant every day when I walk home from work, but I've never stopped by until today. A friend and I decided to check it out, and I was very happy with the service we received! The waitress took our order quickly, and the food was brought out within 5 minutes of placing the order. While we were waiting for the food, they even gave us both a bowl of miso soup to enjoy. The soup was perfect texture and not too overpowering. My friend ordered the BBQ Eel Dragon Roll - definitely recommend. It was the perfect balance of crunchy but sweet. I was expected it to be slimy, but it wasn't at all! Perfectly good sushi along the bay-bloor corridor. Avocado moved into the neighbourhood around the same time i did. They get tons of business from the banks and government offices nearby. By downtown standards they offer affordable and healthy lunches. Stack them up against the raw fish emporium near your place and maybe they come up a bit short. Avocado is supposedly known for their veggie sushi rolls. Veggie sushi is a concept that's lost on me. It's basically cold vegetables encircled by cold rice. Not an ounce of satisfying protein to be found. i respect peoples' preferences when it comes to sushi (I'm as likely to order california rolls as i am something more exotic and less cooked), but take away fresh raw fish and I start to wonder why not just brownbag it? Still, a yam tempura roll is pretty good; a fun mix of pickled and fresh and hot and cold and crispy, much improved by a side of spicy mayo. I opt for a dragon roll set. Capable miso soup (if somewhat stingy on the tofu and seaweed floaties), a few bits of iceberg in ginger dressing, a spicy salmon roll and a dragon roll. While the latter is described as 7 pieces it actually arrives as 9-I guess they don't include the butt end of the tempura shrmp that anchor the roll. The rolls are well-executed, although the dragon roll is a big big to get in one bite. The avocado scales slip off most pieces, and a two-bite solution just leaves a pile of filling on my plate. It's all good and fresh though, if not stunning value. Service is pleasant. Tea is refilled quickly. The bill is only brought after much frantic hand-waving. Music, which I rarely pay attention to, is a thing. I suppose they're going for a relaxed and slightly upscale vibe, opting for classical radio. Normally I'd approve, but on this day (not November 11) the selections include the theme from exodus, taps and O Canada. W.T.F. I endorse Avocado Sushi, but if you're a music fan i suggest take-out. read more

I did not expect this at all! Tucked away on Bay street, this tiny little restaurant really impressed me tonight. I came here with 3 others and they all ordered bento boxes, while I ordered a combination sushi + salmon dragon roll set. To my disappointment, their meals came with seaweed salad but mine came with a regular romaine lettuce salad so when the waiter saw my facial expression go from excitement to sadness, he generously offered me one on the house! What great service! When my food came, my mouth instantly started to water. The presentation was very well done with bright, fresh colours and the salmon dragon roll pieces were fairly large. I took a bite into the salmon sushi first and WOW. The salmon was buttery and melted in my mouth - I really didn't anticipate that level of quality! The portions of everything, including slices of sashimi and avocado, were overall very generous and I would definitely come back! This place is FABULOUS! When we came on a weekday evening, there were barely any customers. Most of them ordered takeout, which is what I would like to do next time simply because I like to eat at home more. The waiter was really nice- not really attentive, but very nice. We ordered a bunch of rolls and sashimi, which came with miso soup and salad. The miso soup was kind of watered down, but as we all know the main attraction is the fish. The appetizer sashimi had small but incredibly fresh and soft slices. It had tuna, salmon and I think cuttlefish? We waited for quite some time for our rolls, but that's because they put all of our orders onto one plate! Everything looked so pretty and fried to perfection. Just thinking about it makes me hungry again. They gave us candy while we were paying, and the total amount was kind of expensive. However, they have really good combos (e.g. 10 sashimi, 15 rolls, 18 sushi is one combo) for around $30~$40, so I would definitely get that next time! We paid $50 (inc. tax and tips) for 4 dishes. I love it here, and I'll definitely order more food next time! (p.s. people seemed to have a bad experience with the teriyaki here so I didn't try it, and I don't plan on it either. The server was very attentive! She always checked up on us. The food was good but not really worth the price. I got the combo with vegetable udon noodles and veggie rolls ($14), and my gm got the vegetable udon only($8). We found it tasted pretty good, I especially appreciated the chili flakes that came on the side. We also got edamame which was kinda pricy in my opinion ($4). I went with my godmother here to catch up and it's a nice intimate spot, and it wasn't really busy when we were there during dinner time. My godmother says that during lunch they're a bit busier, but it's hit or miss depending on the day so plan accordingly if you're planning on coming during lunch. read more

If you're looking for good customer service and great food ( most importantly fresh), then I highly recommend this place. First off, if you're an avocado lover than this is a perfect place to eat. The name is what drew me to this place. I ordered the avocado salad, avocado yam rolls and sashimi every time I've came. The portions are very good not to small but enough to keep you satisfied and light. Not only the avocado was what kept me going back, but the staff are so genuine and they truly value their customers. After the third day coming straight, Michael (the owner) left his cooking station and came over to introduce himself and say how much he really appreciated that I kept coming back. How could I not? One time he even gave me an avocado just before I left, since than he always greeted me by my name. This sushi place is quite small and has a simple decor when you go inside. The menu had very good Japanese dishes including Yaki udons, sashimi, sushi, tempura, and terriyaki sets. The service was very quick and attentive and the food came out quickly too. I had Combination Set G where I had 7 pieces of nigiri, 10 unique sashimi, and spicy salmon hand roll. I thought the nigiri and sashimi sets were very good and the fish was fresh. The spicy salmon hand roll was not spicy though and it tasted more like a tempura hand roll. The spicy salmon hand roll was also not rolled too tightly so the hand roll fell apart easily. I think the combination set was a little bit pricy but for the quality of fish, it is reasonable. As well, there are not many a la carte sushi places in Toronto and this place is definitely a good choice for it if you're not feeling all you can eat with a relatively reasonable price and menu. I will definitely come again to try other specialty rolls and the yaki udons next time. read more

I have wondered past this place a couple of times on my way home from work as I work at Queen's Park and live near Yonge/Bloor. I think the actual signage keeps people away from this restaurant. As Asahi Sushi near my house was closed, and Wow Sushi wasn't that great last time I was there, we decided to venture over to Bay Street. I can't state how happy I am that we did. There was only one other person inside this restaurant for lunch on a Saturday. Assumed the worst, but got the best. We both ordered combinations with sushi, sashimi and rolls. I can't emphasize enough how delicious the rolls are with some extra seasoning on them. The chef puts some definite love into his work. The fish were extremely fresh, the portion size was good. The salad and soup were good, they asked us if we wanted more. I LOVE THIS PLACE. It is a few dollars more, but this is my new go to spot and I will walk the extra 2 blocks from Asahi to go to this place from now on. If you are in the area and love sushi, definitely check this place out - even worth traveling to - yes I said it and I never say that. Really great place for a quick lunch. You can get a combo of 8 sushi (4 of one and 4 of another) with miso soup and salad for around $10. Very fresh quality, wonderfully made sushi. The fish is delicious and the rolls are all very flavourful. Of course, the miso soup is just regular miso soup but it is still very nice to have. I came here based on the Yelp reviews while visiting the Royal Ontario Museum nearby, and I agree with the majority of reviewers. Initially, the storefront seemed small, and since we came in after a few minutes of opening, it was relatively empty. However, you know it's a tell-tale sign that the food is good here when shortly after, the restaurant is entirely full. The ambiance of the restaurant was nice and clean due to the large windows, and lots of natural lighting. After we ordered our food, we noticed there was a line up of people waiting for seats! Service was great as well. We were greeted by a younger male server who was able to accommodate for our group by rearranging the tables. He also was fast, and easily approachable.
