Horrible experience. It was full of people at the seats, which is fine. They told us 15-20 minutes of wait. We obliged and began to wait. Within 10-15 the front was full with people who were waiting. We saw people ahead of us being admitted. So I went to check on the timing. The lady said we had to give our name, which we said we were never asked to do. The man who was working there did try and help and improve the experience but one of the woman working there was grotesquely rude and said she hadn't seen us before and there were four people ahead of us. What used to be a hole in the wall, Sushi California has been the go-to spot for sushi. I don't usually order sushi pizza at most restaurants but this place does it so differently it's definitely worth it. And their rolls are very filling! Yes, there is a lot of rice, but the fillings are proportionate, not just a sliver of salmon like most places nowadays. The quality of the fish is great and their miso soup is $1. This place was introduced to me by a former colleague of mine. Popular as they had a line up, upon arrival and continued to have more people show up thta needed to wait outside. It was recommended I order the red dragon and another one, I cannot recall. Both were large portions and I definitely had enough for two meals. This place has always stand out when frequently heading east of St. Clair toward Dufferin, I've been here in the past before and they have since improved their food quality and portion size. The interior dining is very welcoming and isn't like a basic-ikea put together sushi establishments like the ones I frequent. Staff members are very welcoming and easy to work with. If paying by cash, they have a discount rate which makes it pretty enticing to order more. The place is real affordable and items I've ordered is fresh and delicious, kind of wish I've added something else to my list. Excellent portions. That to me is the primary success of this local gem. If you're on a tight budget, or a cheap date looking to impress, this is your home run! The sizeable portions definitely detracts attention from the flavour and texture. I may be overly sensitive to MSG, so my palate was all salted out but luckily my extremities weren't bloated. The seaweed was tough, but my chompers luckily are still in good form. The rice was a tad on the dry side. And above all, go early without reservations you won't wait too long. Come here if you don't mind waiting AN HOUR for your food. ***THIS IS POSTED ON MY FRIENDS BEHALF*** Some of the worst customer service I've ever had. I arrived for dinner as a single person and it wasn't busy as it was quite snowy outside. I was quickly seated and ordered 5 minutes after seating. I ordered two rolls, the shrimp tempura and miso soup. After arriving at 8:15 and placing my order at 8:20, I waited 15 minutes until I saw the table who had been sat down after me get served their food. Up to that point I still had not received anything, not even a water. After flagging a waitress down, I was given an apology. My miso soup arrived with no spoon alongside my water at 8:50. Afterwards, I had to flag down another waitress and ask for my food as I saw they processed multiple takeout orders and other tables. At this point I was frustrated by the wait and asked for a manager and she mumbled something incoherently before giving me another apology. She also had to come back to clarify my order, because she wrote it wrong. After my order finally came at 8:55, I noticed that my order was still wrong and notified the waitress. Halfway through my meal I noticed that the manager did come in, but he ended up chewing out one of their newer trainees within earshot of me. Overall, the food was acceptable. The tako, ika, and hamachi sashimi were all odd. I found the hamachi to be oddly sour, while the tako sashimi was wet for some reason. Some of the rolls fell apart when I picked them up with my chopsticks and I also noticed they weren't evenly cut. The tempura was excessively breaded and ended up flaking off everywhere and was overall quite plain. Food aside, I wouldn't come back here or even recommend it. It seems that they are incapable of managing their staff professionally, hiring competent staff and only value customers who come in groups of 4 or more. Even so, I noticed that the table of 6 beside me made multiple comments on how they had been waiting for a long time for some of their items. More recently, take-out is much quicker than they say it will be. Sushi California has the BEST spicy mayo that I have ever tasted in my LIFE. My mother is a very picky eater and even admitted that their spicy mayo is just amazing. Some of my favourite signature rolls here are the crunch roll, black dragon roll, and red dragon roll. My friends absolutely love this place but for some reason I still haven't been sold yet! I got salmon sushi and I believe it was the spicy crispy roll (I could be wrong). The salmon sushi was cut quite long and thick, so I wasn't a fan of that. I usually enjoy a shorter thinner cut. The other downfall is the spicy mayo, it's super sweet, so i didn't enjoy that with my roll as well. However I know I will somehow end up back here, as my friends love this place so I will definitely give it a go another time! read more

Ah, this brings back high school memories! I love the kim chi and beef roll, but it's sometimes not available because they run out of kim chi. It's been a while since I've been so I'm not sure if they have changed anything on the menu, but I do remember the other foods tasting really good as well. They do have a good selection of vegetarian items, but not a lot in terms of vegan options. Sushi California offers your typical, North American sushi fare; tempura, makis, sushi, sashimi, udons, teriyaki and party trays. When my boyfriend and I first moved to the neighbourhood, I wanted to get some food to go on the cheap. My boyfriend got a chicken terriyaki meal with soup, salad and rice for 7$. I got three different kinds of rolls. I know I got a spicy tuna, and avocado but I can't remember the third one. They were very fresh and tightly rolled. My boyfriend's meal came with the typical terrible japanese iceberg salad and a decent miso. The chicken was well cooked and succulent. I have returned here and the food was excellent. The place is often busy and sometimes filled with police officers. The service is excellent and quick. The only "disappointment" I saw in the restaurant was a client who wanted all you can eat sushi. I honestly had zero to negative expectations for this, but I was very significantly positively surprised. First of all, they have the call button thing that they have in a lot of asian countries to call people if you need something. Secondly, the food was actually very great. The Hamachi and Saba wasn't STELLAR but the Salmon was good and the rolls were good too. Best of all, this place is CHEAP. This is really a place where you can get full off sushi without breaking your bank, and it doesn't taste like supermarket sushi. Would definitely recommend! This is my go to sushi spot with my girlfriend! Our first date in fact! I love this place the sushi is good and quite yummy. The rolls I often get are spicy salmon and california crunch roll. They usually come out delicious! The only downside is the daytime staff is not up to par as their evening/night time staff. Ive been here multiple times during the day and also during the evening. The restaurant is packed on a Friday night! Being one of the only two Japanese restaurants in this area, and the good pricing they offer, I understand the appeal. I normally get the Seafood Udon or the Soft Shell Crab appetizer, which are both great. This time I ordered the Chicken Karage appetizer and Spider Roll (10 pcs), the taste was ok but the rice was too mushy and fell apart easily. Their version of Chicken Karage here is spongy, not crispy at all. The ratio of the coating is a bit more than the meat, the texture feels chewy and dry. The honey-tasting sauce came with dish, but I would prefer the usual spicy mayo. The restaurant is nicely decorated, bright and clean, service is quick, food is decent, portion is good for its price (bento boxes are great deals). The taste isn't bad for what you pay. Their rice isn't sticky enough, rather it is dry (they will crumble as you try to pick up pieces) or it will be too hard (that it takes a little effort to separate the rice into mouthfuls). What was going to be a five star tip saying to order ahead during the holidays for take out, slowly dwindled to a one star review after being subjected to poor and down right rude customer service along with witnessing other who ordered an hour ahead of time being told their order wasn't ready yet. But to pay and wait. As for me I went in and ordered I was told my order would be half an hour so I went and waited at the neighbouring Starbucks and took in the Easter parade. After 30 minutes I returned to get my food(assuming half an hour meant 30 minutes universally), when I asked the girl working the counter if my sushi was ready she rudely said "Ya Ya" waving her hand in my face. She went on to disappear for another half an hour only re-emerging after I advised the customers who placed orders hours ago over the phone to hold off on paying because they where not giving the goods. As for the food its self the spider roll wasn't to my expectation(based on a yelp picture, and the Green roll wasn't what I was given last time. To add to the situation their poor handling of the soy sauce caused a complete mess in the bag.
