Zekes Coffee is a small batch coffee roaster located about 5 miles away from downtown Baltimore. They first started at Baltimore Farmers' Market in November 2005 and opened the first cafe at 4607 Harford Road in February 2010. In September 2017, the cafe relocated to the current spot and Yelp has the correct address (4719 Harford Rd). As of November 2017, Zekes Coffee also have two additional locations outside of this original Baltimore location (one in Pittsburgh and one in Washington DC). Many local cafes (e.g. Blue Moon Cafe and Saturday Morning Cafe, etc) in Baltimore exclusively serves Zekes Coffee. I believe there's a parking lot behind the store building, but I just parked my car about a block away at Cedarhurst St. (the street right behind McDonald's). Comparing to downtown Baltimore, I felt pretty comfortable walking around this neighborhood. The shop is spacious and there are many sandwich options (for breakfast or lunch) to choose from. *** Latte (10 oz $3): No fancy latte art - just a simple cup of latte. The drink was really hot and tasted a bit watery at first, but caffeine started to sink in and the drink started to taste better afterward. *** Will I return if I am in this area? Sure - this is definitely a great spot to study. Zekes' latte wasn't too bad, but I still prefer some of smoother and stronger lattes I have had in Los Angeles (e.g. Jameson Brown Coffee Roasters in Pasadena, CA). read more

i am obsessed with this place. i live in virginia but i have a friend that's a stones throw away from zekes that made the mistake of introducing me to this shop because now it's caused arguments between us when he wants to go elsewhere. the coffee is great, i love the breakfast there, the staff is always so friendly and the service prompt, and the tables and facilities are clean and comfortable and welcoming. i can't speak more highly of this place, give everyone who works there a raise! thank you for making my trips up to baltimore more pleasant each time :) read more

Zeke's is a great place to study and/or work remotely! There's a room in the back with giant tables for big study groups or people needing the tablespace. I find it difficult to find spaces where I can focus, and I found the back room to be free of distraction. However, I did not enjoy the food! I ordered a chai latte, egg and cheese croissant, and a cup of tomato soup. The tomato soup was actually great, but the chai latte was watered down. I also couldn't taste any of the spices in the chai tea, so it was kinda like warm milk. The croissant wasn't very buttery or flavorful. The amount of study space made up for the food, though. I've had a hard time finding a coffee shop in Baltimore with adequate table space, so I was very happy to see that they were able to offer that! read more

The coffee is fine and the place is spacious but I don't like that if you are drinking/eating in, they give you disposable cups. My friend's desserts came on a real plate but our drinks came in plastic or cardboard cups. It seems super wasteful. Why couldn't the drinks come in pint glasses, mugs or 24-oz cups? I don't see any indication they encourage people to bring in their own cups either. In 2019, this seems like a big misstep that would be simple to correct. I had thought they would have fixed it by now but every time I've been it's been disposable cups. I would rather take my business to a place that is more environmentally conscientious. The plastic cups didn't appear to be recyclable and I didn't see a place to compost the paper ones. I would have brought my own but I swear I saw a pint glass on their Facebook page recently and thought they had finally made the switch so I decided I'd give them another shot. You could easily miss it if you're driving too fast, so slow down and roll into Zekes for some coffee, food, and sass. I had my first Zekes at the Saturday farmer's market in Fells Point and it was love at first sip. I started looking forward to Saturdays just so I could wander down there and get my fix. Then I had to return to Portland (I know, I know, we have coffee here, but I say if you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with, and I love, LOVE, Zekes coffee), I brought a couple bags home with me. It is a nice change, I like the bold flavors. This time I walked into Zekes, browsed the numerous varieties, grabbed as many bags as I thought would fit in my suitcase then proceeded to chat and flirt with the adorable blond gal at the register. Ordered a latte to go and sadly took my leave, but not without one more wide open smile and flirty exchange. The place was full of people from everywhere, having a coffee, having a nosh (they've got pretty good nosh), and enjoying life. Just the way it should be. read more

I'm not typically a coffee drinker, but every now and again (aka once or twice per year lol) I have to power through something, and coffee is the only way through. So of course when I realized I needed the extra energy, I immediately checked to see if Zeke's was open. Luckily, it was! (By the way, the hours posted are incorrect as of 6/27/2022. They were open past 6 pm on a Monday.) I ordered a small iced latte with hazelnut syrup and oat milk. I typically don't like the taste of coffee at all -- just really need it to do it's job -- but this one here is delicious! So grateful for this local gem! Great place with a huge variety of drink choices. I'm not a big coffee drinker but their chai tea is my favorite and they don't miss ! They have a great variety of delicious desserts and pastries and they do specials during the week that are worth driving miles for! Discovered this place while in quarantine, made the trek out from Ellicott City since there's no traffic, and it will forever be the only coffee I get - Charm City beans has been my favorite so far. Been 3x since. Their coffee is like no other. Whole roasted beans, favorite smell every morning. When I've gone I get a coffee or iced coffee to go. Last time I didn't realize they closed at 2pm. When I placed my ordered said it would be ready next day. I backed up and someone came out to see if I needed anything, it was 2:15pm. He went to check on my order and delivered it to me. Super impressed with their customer service and quality of coffee. Highly recommend if your in the area or can grab from anywhere that sells their coffee. read more

A great place to meet friends for a leisurely snack and chat or to grab a cup of joe to go. They have a great selection, make really delicious coffee. My favorite part is that they use real chai tea, and not that pre-made chai sugar powder. This way I can order my favorite drink, a dirty chai, without feeling overloaded on sugar. I also enjoyed 2 rugelach on this visit, one raspberry and one chocolate. I discovered zeke's coffee at 32rd street farmers market. I'm not a person who drink coffee regularly but the line for zeke's coffee is super long so I want to have a try. I got the hot brewed coffee for $3, really good price. The coffee is not too bitter, not too sour at all, it has a little bit sweet taste and their special coffee bean's flavor. Recommend this place to no coffee drinker like me. Definitely a good start! Also recommend this place to coffee drinker, my friend who drink coffee everyday also got a hot brewed coffee and he liked it. read more

I love the coffee from Zeke's, so I was excited to try them out in person. They have a great COVID setup (this was for fall - they may change as weather gets colder) - you cannot go inside, but you walk up to their to-go window to order and pick up. It's under an overhang, so you get some protection in bad weather. There are also tables & chairs in an outdoor seating area if you want to eat while there. I got a specialty coffee drink and a breakfast sandwich. The coffee (which I have had elsewhere) is very good, and they have tons of customization options. One warning: the "peanut butter" flavored syrup, while good, really tastes nothing like peanut butter. I'm not sure where they get their bagels, but they're very doughy, which I really like. I love this place. I've never been here until after Covid-19 to be honest. I was looking for places to get delicious coffee and some yummy food. They have a wonderful website to order the food and drink for curbside pickup. It's so easy and you can pay for it and they'll give you a text when it's ready. You never have to leave your car. The coffee choices are divine. I haven't tasted a coffee I didn't like. I'm partial to the 1/2 and 1/2 Brazil Blend. I also enjoy their egg breakfast sandwich with sausage on a croissant. They do have heavenly chocolate chip cookies that unfortunately is always out of stock. That's the only sad part. Bake more cookies please! It's still a five star place simply based on convenience, deliciousness, and friendly service. read more

I'm giving two stars only because I very much believe in and want to support local businesses. I've been to the Zeke's roastery store since the first year it opened, to the newer café, and purchased beans and brewed at the farmer's markets and stores around town, like the Wine Source. In the early 2000s in Baltimore, there weren't local options for coffee beans despite 90s cafe culture changing the coffee landscape in the US and the availability of great quality, well-roasted beans everywhere coast to coast. In the late 90s, Starbucks and Pete's were beginning to spread like a pox upon the land, but things took longer here in Baltimore. I had worked for a very exacting café in another state that used exquisite beans and careful brew techniques, so I was excited when I moved here and people told me about then new Zeke's. I was pretty disappointed in the beans but loved that they were there and thought, "Give 'em time! You're lucky to have local!" I've bought Zeke's beans many times and I don't think they do a great job of roasting. The beans lack depth and they all slip to the same general, sludgey flavor profile for me. They lack the nuanced coffee notes that you get with skilled roasteries all over the country, and now in the mid-Atlantic with Ceremony, Counter Culture, Rise Up, Mom's, Chesapeake, Black Dog or any roaster that has learned the magic subtleties of the craft. But I've never wanted to leave a bad review because people LOVE Zeke's and why rain on their (local, independent) parade? However...Two weeks ago at the waverly farmer's market I ordered three cups of absolutely undrinkable, bitter, barely coffee flavored water--almost no coffee in there at all-- for $15. And that is the last time I'll have to pour out 3/4 of a cup of Zeke's into a nearby bush after stupidly taking the bait because i needed caffeine and there were no other options. One of my companions was a diehard Zeke's fan. Even they had to admit it was undrinkable and poured theirs into the bushes too. Sorry, all you fans. There is too much truly delicious coffee in the world to pay $17/lb or $5 for ____. read more

A Baltimore institution! I'll be honest: the first time I had their coffee I didn't like it that much. Now, I think it's some of the best coffee out there. Not sure why my taste buds changed, but I can't get enough Zeke's coffee. I go there several times a week for an iced latte (my favorite) or and iced coffee. I also buy their k-cup pods so I can have Zeke's coffee all the time at home. They have about 10 types, my favorite is the Royal blend although they are all good. They also make Italian soda! They have a vast array of pastries, desserts, cakes, and also many sandwich varieties, bagels, and daily/weekly specials. There is always something new. I've never been for weekend breakfast but I appreciate the wide variety of different specials. The pastries are large- usually enough for multiple servings. They have a good cheese danish and a really excellent chocolate-dipped almond hamantaschen. I will say that occasionally pastries from the case have been a bit dry, I guess maybe those weren't fresh. But I still love Zeke's so much I'm staying with the 5 stars. Parking lot behind the store; plenty of street parking in front or on the perpendicular streets. I was so excited to go here! I had 40 mins to pick up a breakfast and head back to get my kids. I lucked out and got good parking and then came into a register with no line! When I left, the line was practically out of the door! Either way, I ordered a lg coffee with room. And an everything bagel with lox and capers. The coffee was filled to the brim and was hotter than any coffee I have ever held in my life! I didn't want to be a dick and pour my coffee in the trash so I patiently (and excruciatingly) sipped the coffeee down to be able to add just a bit of half and half. About that time they called out my order which I picked up and then made my way out of the door through the crowd of people. All was kosher until I dove into my bagel at a red light....NO LOX!!! I was super hot - that was a lot of anticipation for an amazing bagel with lox. What I ended up with was an amazingly cooked bagel and no lox. Oh well. Never fear! Once I got to my destination I called. The woman I spoke to was so pleasant. She found my purchase using the Apple Pay receipt and gave me a refund for the bagel. All was right with the world. My absolute favorite roast is the Hippie Blend, definitely gets me going and I love the rich flavor. I was a huge fan of zeke's coffee and my last couple reviews showed it. However, I'm updating based on last 3 visits - 2 of which are from the newer location on Harford Rd. Pros: Coffee is still very good. Location is convenient but parking can be a little tricky. Some who work there are awesome and super helpful and friendly. Which brings is to the cons... Cons: Some who work there are NOT helpful and a noted couple are a little...uh, old school Baltimore/Hamilton area, unfriendly. I understand we all have bad days but this has been consistent for the last 3 visits with two of the same people so will just do a hard pass for now. I don't need lack of awareness or rudeness with my coffee and while the roulette wheel may give me a wonderful zekes person, I don't feel like taking the chance. read more

I'll say at the outset that I have lived in the neighborhood for several years aMd have been a loyal and frequent customer. Today was not such a great visit. I came in to get something to go with a friend from out of town. she ordered a sesame bagel with cream cheese. When we arrived home, we found that the bagel 1) wasn't sesame and 2) was inedible. I ordered a lox sandwich on a pumpernickel bagel scooped out and toasted. now, this is not an unusual order. asking for the middle of a bagel to be scooped out so you get less bread is not uncommon. I've never been to any bagel place that doesn't know what that means or refuses to do it. I was rudely told, "we don't do that." when I asked why, I was informed, "because the kitchen doesn't do it." consequently, I canceled my order. frankly, I was very surprised as zekes is usually awesome. oh well, I guess. every business can have an off day. read more

I just started going to Zekes Coffee shop,a month ago. The first time the experience was ok only because my coffee wasn't very hot. It could be a just a coffee preference for very hot coffee. The bacon egg and cheese sandwich was Great! 2nd time the sandwich and potatoes was great and we ate in... people there have great personalities. Zeke's offer individual k cups, u can mix a box for $11 there coffee is really good. So I bought a box mixed box to make at home ...I will return. read more

About a 4.5: I came to Zekes Coffee to do some work - Zekes is a family-owned & operated company that has been around since '05. They have 4 locations (2 in Baltimore, 1 in Pittsburgh, and 1 in DC). They offer conventional/signature/decaf/sustainable blends, espresso/cappuccino, latte, Americano, mocha, macchiato, teas, etc., as well as a limited menu that offers breakfast/lunch sandwiches/pastries. I tried their Hot Apple Cider (from their special), a shot of espresso with some foam (oh, yea, nice and very strong), their Hot Chocolate (hot and creamy), and their 'Powerhouse' sandwich (whole grain bread with hummus, meunster cheese, and fresh veggies (alfafa sprouts, cucumbers, etc.) with a bag of chips and a grape Boylan soda. The place itself is cute, very laid-back, and a nice relaxing atmosphere (love the colorful art pieces on the wall) - a good handful of outlets where you can set up to do some work, and plenty of tables where you can sit and enjoy your brew. The staff here are super friendly and awesome, and I love the fact that you can just start a 'tab' so that if you are here for the long-run, you can add to it in terms of the more drinks/food you purchase (instead of whipping out the cash/card each time). One of the guys (Brian) also busts out his guitar and plays some easy-listening songs, which I thought was fantastic :D The staff also makes rounds to clear your empty cups/dishes away :D Definitely a cute place if you're in the area and want to find a cool local spot to support a local business/do some work - many seem to coming in and out to meet some friends, chit chat for a bit, enjoy a cup, or get some drinks to go :D P.S. This is the quintessential fantastic neighborhood cafe whose roasts have become Baltimore's. Now found in farmers markets, restaurants and stores around the city. The cafe is in the fantastic and diverse neighborhood of Hamilton-Lauraville in Northeast Baltimore on Harford Road. It has a neighborhood institution feel in a small shop with an old tin ceiling and a crowd that ranges from mom with kid, ex hippy, hipster, professional, and Morgan State student. They get it too with local ingredients when they can....and local products. Finally don't miss the sandwiches. Great bread... Had a veggie hummus one that was just great. They had run out of tomatoes so I must try it again but great without too. Last, you can buy all their roasts here and the roaster is just a few blocks away. read more
