I stopped by Zekes after purchasing a book nextdoor at Snug Books. I got a breakfast sandwich on a biscuit which was made to order and DELICIOUS. Not all places in Maryland know how to make a good biscuit, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I got a black drip coffee which was good, but not extraordinary. The cashier was very friendly and upbeat. There was a pastry case with some very tempting options. The inside made clear it was a local community favorite. People were catching up with friends and some doing work. read more

We were in the area and stopped by for lunch on Christmas Eve. Apparently Zeke's is well known in Baltimore and I was living under a rock, but I have since been educated. We got the Baltimore sandwich, classic Italian, a couple muffins, a vanilla Italian soda, and a bag for coffee from the wall of coffee choices. They also have a full display of baked goodies too. The seating area is decently sized with 2 rooms of tables for patrons. My boyfriend really liked his Italian sandwich. I swapped the tiger sauce on the Baltimore for mayo since I don't like horseradish and it was tasty. The vanilla Italian soda was super sweet, just the way we like it. I would ask for less ice next time. The muffins were just ok, but forgiven as everything else was delicious. read more

Man with a beard and baseball cap gave my order to someone else (confirmed by another staff member) and when I asked he rudely said "we do things in order here, what don't you understand?" Someone shouldn't coach him to be empathetic to customers not confrontational. Surprisingly great. I didn't know what to expect but once I had a summer job in the area I checked their menu and appreciated the diversity and freshness. Their seating area allows for work from home ppl and those meeting with others. There's an extra room which is away from the larger seating area and a porch with windows open. What a pleasant experience this was. Generally, I'm not a coffee drinker. Never have been so I never go into coffee shops bc I don't have any interest. A friend of. One suggested we stop at Zeke's so she could grab a cup. When we walked up, I noticed how inviting the exterior was. It looked urban and hip. Upon entering, I was thoroughly impressed with the interior. It is a huge space with very high ceilings. Great natural light comes in the enormous windows and the interior lighting is just the right compliment. It's a very clean and inviting space. Also upon entering, there is a massive display board showing all the types of drinks being offered (coffees, teas & chai). As someone that doesn't drink coffee, I have been cautious with going to coffeehouses bc I have no idea what to order. This is all based on going to Starbucks many years ago and hearing, 'venti, grande, foam, 1/2 pump, numerous pumps, latte... etc. I didn't know what ANY of that meant so it was very intimidating and thusly, turned me off completely). This vibrant visual display is EXACTLY what disarmed me. It is a 'how to' when ordering drinks. I was instantly at ease upon ordering. WHEW!!!! TRIPLE WORD SCORE! SELECTIONS: 1) We were greeted by a very nice guy (Todd) that walked me through options and didn't make me feel stupid for asking questions (they do at 'Starbucks'). I opted for an iced chai drink. This came with a tiny schmear of cream cheese (cc), a single layer of lox torn in half and placed on top of one another to look like there was more salmon than there actually was, tomato, raw red onion & capers. The flavors were ALL there and it was good but it was quite honestly one of the skimpiest bagel w/ lox combos I've ever had. It was more dense bagel than lox, cc, and all the fixings. In fact, the cc was so scarce, I asked for a side of cc just to bulk it up but For a schmear, I was charged $1. For a schmear of PLAIN cc? REALLY?!? No need to repeat this purchase. CRIME! 6) Desserts: Raspberry cream brownie had good flavor and the Apple strudel (I think that's what it was called) was stuffed with plenty of apples. Very nice. 7) My friend enjoyed the coffee so much, she bought a couple boxes of k-cups for the Kuerig. My overall take: when I'm on that side of town, Zeke's will definitely be a regular stop. Flat out, the best food you will get at a coffee house AND the best coffee in Baltimore. The review could end here, what else could you want? Allow me a few suggestions. Chef Joe Robinson, one of the hardest working human beings you will meet, has won the Sun's Best Chef in Baltimore twice and he was going up against people with Michelin stars. He makes his own lox, smokes his own meats, roasts his own turket, makes his own hot honey and 1000 Island Dressing. Joe is part animal, part machine. He loves cooking and he deserves respect. My Mother always wants to go "Visit your friend Joe's place" for breakfast, on her birthday. She says he makes the best cream chipped beef she has ever had. (Always check the daily specials, breakfast is an event, the Grilled Rueben comes on house made saurkraut rye and Burger Night is legendary.) Zeke's staff are diligent and, dare I say, compassionate. They know brunch means a lot to some of us. I waited all week and they go out of their way to make it special, even when it gets crowded. Any time you go there, the food and coffee is exceptional, you can buy the best small batch roasted beans in town, they make a bunch of deliciousthings in house, they even have beer. Hands down one of the best places in the city to get some great coffee, and I'd recommend people to stop by here if you're around East Baltimore to grab a cup of coffee rather than Dunkin. Their sandwiches are also quite good, and the servers are so nice and helpful. There's also some areas in and outside of the restaurant to sit down, and it's pretty versatile to hang out and have lunch in. The only downside I'd say is that it can be a bit pricey, but otherwise, I highly recommend Zeke's. read more

Went here for the first time today and what a disappointment. My iced tea was weak, my pumpernickel bagel was supposed to be toasted and with veggie cream cheese, but the cream cheese was barely covering the bagel and my friend even said, "That's a tiny bagel and what's with the cream cheese?". His scone was like a biscuit he said and his Cubano was unremarkable. The staff was decent and the open area in front would be better with ventilation. Two sandwiches sounded too good to pass, so we split The Baltimore and The Classic Italian, and OMG I need to go back and have The Baltimore all to myself. I was heading over to TheCube which is on the same strip and didn't have much time to grab food before my next class (studying at umbc) and gave a new place a try, I walked in and the place was very welcoming and friendly, their menu was easy to read and the food was awesome, I got a grilled chicken sandwich, a mocha iced coffee 24oz (need as much as possible to deal with class) and it was fantastic! The coffee was better priced than Dunkin or Starbucks and was 1000% better, the chicken sandwich was fresh and tasty, and it came with an apple. My husband and I started going to Zeke's when it was in an old, small yellow building on Harford Rd. near the Pep Boys. It was the best coffee and bagels I ever had in my life. Went there for years. When they moved locations, I was no longer living in the city. However, we'd still make a special trip down. Today's visit came with extreme disappointment. I hadn't been in probably a year. But we couldn't believe the change. We both got bagels, which tasted odd, weren't fully toasted and had a thin layer of cream cheese. My coffee was fine. But my husband got a mocha. Half the cup was foam and there was no mocha taste at all. Not sure what happened to Zeke's. Used to be my #1 coffee and bagel place. I'd recommend it to everyone. I've ordered Zeke's Charm City Blend and India Monsoon Malabar beans online and loved them, so I was excited to visit one of their stores in person. I ordered an almond milk latte and it was delicious as expected. I also split the Cuban sandwich with a side of potato salad with a friend. I understand that grocery prices are rising and that might reflect in the price of foods. Zeke's has a (very) small-print sign (in hard-to-read font) at the counter that states the prices on the menu are not updated. I don't have an issue with paying more because of inflation, but I do have an issue of not knowing how much I'm charged until I'm rung up. It's uncomfortable to ask people to take dishes off your order after they've already asked you about cheese/bread selections or other modifications. In my case, I thought my small latte (which was a 6-oz. compared to most other establishments' 8-oz. small) would cost $3.50 plus $0.50 almond milk substitution. I found out that I paid ~$5. I also thought my sandwich would be $13, but it turned out to be $16. My order ended up costing over $20 not including tip for a latte and a sandwich. Since moving to Baltimore, I've had Zeke's coffee a bunch of times (especially at our local farmers markets), but I'd never been to the coffeeshop. But this past weekend, a friend and I decided to explore the Hamilton/Lauraville area, and we stopped in at Zeke's. The coffeeshop is really big! And they have a very extensive coffee menu as well as a great variety of pastries and other food and non-coffee beverages to boot. We tried the poppy seed hamantaschen, which was good (buttery!!!). Zekes is my go to when im teleworking and dont feel like making coffee at home. Its nearby, they have great coffee and the breakfast sandwiches are the perfect early morning go to. They of course roast their own coffee beans and sell them by the pound. I love their beans but honestly the coffee is so much better when I get it from the shop. Update: I have resumed going to Zeke's, but that's now in question again. Recently, I wanted to order a sandwich that comes on a certain type of bread - a type that I hate. I asked the guy behind the counter if I could get a different type of bread instead and, I kid you not, he said the chef was getting pretty serious about not substituting anything. He went back and talked to said chef and, guess what!?! No substitutions. Now hear me out. I sometimes ask for substitutions or removal of something I know I don't like. In the thousands of meals I've had in restaurants of all types, I think this is only the second or third time a chef has refused a request. The other couple of times were at high-end restaurants. At a sandwich shop, though, I find it hard to believe that they even have a chef who has that much control over what is served to patrons, much less a good reason not to substitute the bread. I mean, really? If it's a cost issue, I'll happily pay the 10-cent differential. If this were a complicated dish that was honed over weeks or months, I would probably understand. But it's a sandwich for goodness sake. Throw some things on bread and voilà, a sandwich. Chef not required, either. So yeah, I'm putting Zeke's on punishment again for a little while. Moved to the area right as it was shutting down due to Covid-19 but I still wanted delicious coffee...my search led me here. I've been a few times and have tried different drinks and food and it is always delicious. Always. But let's talk customer service for a second... Yesterday, on our way to pick up the order curbside (which is still so awesome) we got a flat tire. A flat tire in a pandemic is a whole new ballgame. It took our roadside assistance so long to get to us so we called to delay pick up - no problem, they were very accommodating. Well, a few other hiccups happened and it had to be replaced at a dealership and by the time we would get to Zeke's, it would've been closed...so we called again and ask if there was ANYTHING else they could do (understanding that this isn't their problem so I was ready to cut my losses) and the phone person kindly offered to let us roll the order over to the next day. I stopped pass here yesterday for some tea and a pastry. I usually drink their coffee which is amazing but I've converted to a tea drinker. I ordered a medium Earl Grey tea and a lemon pastry. The tea bag was on the little side, but it was fine. I prefer my tea with some half and half, I located a counter on the side of the cafe that had sugar, half and half, milk, and napkins. I couldn't help but notice the trash was filled to capacity and it was filthy. The trash was right next to the counter with the coffee/tea fixings which was rather disgusting. My pastry was good, the lemon filling had the right amount of sweetness and it was a little tart. The pastry wasn't flaky but it was moist. I really wanted a doughnut but they only serve them during the week which is a bummer. I would return if I was in the area but I wouldn't make a special trip just to come here. The pastry and tea were ok, nothing stellar. They specialize in coffee, hence their name. But if you love coffee, Zeke's is the place. Give them a try! read more
