The food is good, while unspectacular. The friendliness and awesomeness of the servers who work her is what gives this place 4 stars. All the servers/staff are awesome. In particular, Janice; who I believe is the daughter of the restaurant owner, and who was our server that day, makes this place worth visiting. To give you an idea of how awesome Janice is, consider that I'm writing this review over a year after stopping in at this restaurant and I STILL remember her name! This is made even more impressive because of the fact that I'm stunningly terrible with names and will literally forget them the second after hearing them. Also, when's the last time you remembered the name of your server or a random stranger over a year after encountering them? Even more impressive, how many servers/strangers remember YOUR NAME a year after encountering you? Janice remembered both mine and my wife's name about a year after eating here for the first time, and she was calling pretty much every other customer by their names as well! Amazing! I can't believe all the years I've lived in West Seattle I missed this place! It truly is a hidden gem. I was seated quickly, my waitress is one of the nicest people ever, my food was brought out within about 7 minutes and it was delicious. I ordered the country fried steak (which I've never had in my life), it came with eggs, spuds with fresh onions and bell peppers, and toast. Most of the locals already know that the original owners have recently retired and a new family has taken over. For those of you who don't know much about this restaurant, Young's has been a White Center staple for breakfast and lunch since the 80's. They have both Chinese and traditional American breakfast/lunch in one location, which undoubtedly contributes to their popularity. Unfortunately, you could only get this delectable combo before 3pm, the original closing time. The good news is that the new owners have recently opened up additional hours from 4-8pm. This is the true reason for my review. During the day the original Young's menu remains. From 4-8pm they have started to offer Thai food. Now, I will be the first to say that I am very picky about Thai food. West Seattle is blessed with Bang Bar and Buddha Ruksa, both amazing Thai places....but a bit of a drive from White Center. They are usually my go to. I decided to try Young's out as it is a mere 5 blocks from me. I was not disappointed! Yes the menu is smaller, but all the tradional favorites are there. Young's is definitely my new Thai spot! We had crispy garlic chicken, pad see ew, pad Thai, Tom kha, and spicy eggplant. All were well done and to go portion sizes were great for sharing family style. I will say that if you like it spicy definitely crank up the stars. 3 stars was not very spicy and the spicy eggplant was minimally spicy. Of course, we only put a 3 star on one dish (the rest were 0 stars) so it might have been forgotten by accident. I'd add pics to this review, but the food was so good there isn't anything left to capture! I'm giving this place 3 stars because their customer service was incredibly awesome. the two girls that served us were so nice! At first i was thinking... chinese restaurant that serves diner food..? that's really weird. its a diner but also your regular chinese restaurant. Me and my brother both ordered omelettes and it came with a side as well. He ordered the(4 eggs) tocuhdown omelette and it was HUGE! i can't remember which omelette i ordered but i only got the 2 eggs one which is like a regular size omelette at most locations. I'd have to say the food wasn't very impressive. Well, at least mine wasn't. My brother ate all of his so im assuming he liked his. I've had better diner food, but i'm rating this place high due to their customer service. I've never been to a place that provided that good of service. read more

I've eaten here several times already, usually for breakfast. This time I ordered lunch; the Loco Moco. It wasn't on the menu but Janis, the waitress, was very accomodating. There isn't a better example of a "mom & pop" or "family-owned" business than Young's. Mom and Dad run the kitchen, while the daughters take care of the rest. Oh, and did I mention that I absolutely love Janice?! When she's not around, it's awfully quiet though... The minute a new customer steps foot in the restaurant, this quick-witted daughter introduces herself and asks their name. If they come back a week or a year later, she will STILL remember their name! Janice has such a killer facial recognition gift. Anywho, I digress... The entire family is extremely hard working. After all, it has been in the same spot of White Center since 1982 for a reason! I think that is due to two reasons: 1) The family dynamic with killer customer service and 2) their greasy spoon, traditional food. There's something for everyone to love on the menu since it's a combination of both classic breakfast items and Chinese food available at all hours they're open. This place feels so homey. The servers seem to recognize customers when they come back even after one visit. I go to Chief Sealth and South Seattle College which are both nearby. My friends and I always go here on our days off. The service is super friendly and calm. It's a really different vibe, but the servers seem more genuine to me. I always order the chicken fried steak. Everywhere I go, I order the chicken fried steak, but Young's definitley has the best one so far. I've also had their waffles. Whenever I come here, I'm actually sooooo hungry. I think some of the basic food items are a little pricy. Like the waffles are kinda expensive, if added as a side, I feel like they should be cheaper, but price isn't a really big factor for me. I don't know what I was expecting to be totally honest, my friends had suggested it and I was a little apprehensive because of the words Chinese and American. However, the high reviews gave me some hope! I want to start out by saying that the service was totally top notch, incredibly friendly, fast paced and fun. Servers are really good at what they do and you can tell that they genuinely enjoy their jobs. Space is big and there are plenty of seats. Onto food, think of greasy diner food but really freaking good (still greasy). I ordered the two pancakes with two eggs and bacon or sausage but since I don't eat pork or beef they let me sub it for hash browns. Eggs were great, I ordered them fried hard and the yolk on one of em was still runny. Hash browns were just how I like them, super crispy and soft on the inside. The pancakes were great, fluffy, a bit of chew. Girlfriend ordered the chicken sandwich and got a fried patty (she had been anticipating a sandwich) not a burger. But she said it was fine. My friends loved their choices (pancakes and waffle- it looked really, really good). Though, I will admit, the amount of grease left on the plate was disheartening. I think my only qualm with this place is the price per person for tea. I didn't know it was 2 bucks each, which is kind of steep. Came in on a Sunday for brunch. The place was busy, but we were seated quickly. The servers were so very nice, and one of the sisters who worked there even took some time to chat with us and welcome for our first time in. I will say they are very nice probably because they know their food times are long. After placing our orders I had so much coffee refills that by the time our food got to us I was legitimately full. It was easily 25 minutes minimum. Had the service been terrible I might have been more upset. The food itself was simple, but good (we only got the American food). Portions were also quite generous. I guess going on a Sunday afternoon isn't the best idea, but I still think they can improve on the wait. read more

Young's is the most charming, delicious, and friendly brunch place in West Seattle. The restaurant itself has a warm and homey environment. I can't decide what's better, their food or their service. Don't get me wrong, their Chicken Fried Steak with Sausage Gravy, Toast, and homemade strawberry jam are my go to's whenever I'm there. But the staff, especially Janice, are so nice and caring. Whenever I'm in, she recognizes me and always asks me how Target's been since I work there. I've been here for breakfast and lunch and it's OK but not great. On the upside there is lots of choice on the lunch menu...including a good selection of Chinese food. I ordered the Mongolian beef. It was kinda tomatoey. Not like the Mongolian beef that everybody else makes. I didn't like it. While there is plenty of choice on the lunch menu I felt like the breakfast menu was kinda skimpy. Just the basics. I'd like to see some huevos or breakfast burritos. And the major reason that I felt like the breakfast menu was limited is that I couldn't possibly order an omelette--I can't stand browned eggs. I think the major reason that this place is so highly rated is that the service is phenomenal. It is run by a family and they work their asses off. They go out of their way to make sure that everyone feels at home and every order is delivered quickly. We're going to keep coming back, because it's quick, local, and the prices are good. read more

I came to Young's for the first time on my way to the airport with my boyfriend. When I stopped in again with him on my next trip to Seattle a month and a half later, Janice enthusiastically greeted us both by first name even though she wasn't our server, came over to ask how my trip was, and inquired how Salt Lake was treating me. She remembered all of this from a quick meal we had over a month earlier. I am blown away at how amazing the service is here. As for the food - anywhere I can order waffles and Chinese food - sign me up. I've yet to try anything I didn't like.
